Welcome to All-Weather Championships Finals Day
Welcome to Newcastle Racecourse and AllWeather Championships Finals Day. We are delighted that you could join us here to celebrate the end of Season XI, which has proven to be another fantastic competition over the winter
We have over £1,000,000 in prize money available today, the richest day of all-weather racing in Europe. In addition, the All-Weather Vase fixture, worth £395,000 takes place at our sister racecourse Lingfield Park alongside All-Weather racing from Chelmsford City. Good Friday continues to grow as a marquee day for British all-weather racing with bumper fields and competitive racing across the country and exciting runners from both Ireland and France involved.
The thanks of everyone involved in the AllWeather Championships must go to all of the racehorse owners, trainers, jockeys and racing staff who have taken part this season, as well as those who are supporting today's fixtures.
Equally, we must thank our sponsors, who have been excellent supporters of the All-Weather Championships and today's racing in BetUK and BetMGM.
We look forward to crowning this season's Champions this afternoon. Rossa Ryan caps a successful winter with his first All-Weather Champion Jockey title, and £10,000 prize today Godolphin continue their incredible run as Champion Owner, which they have won every year since Season II in 2015 Billy Loughnane
once again takes the All-Weather Champion Apprentice title, whilst also ending the season as runner up in the Champion Jockey table.
The All-Weather Champion Trainer title has gone down to the wire this season. At the time of going to print, reigning and multiple Champion Trainer Mick Appleby leads Tony Carroll by just two wins, 43 to 41 with Charlie Johnston snapping at their heels on 39 With multiple entries across the remaining days of the season, will the title remain with Mick Appleby or will Tony Carroll be celebrating a first Championship?
The ARC £1,000,000 All-Weather Bonus Scheme returned for a second year this season in another close finish. The top of the Horse of the Year table was equally dominated by Charlie Johnston, with Artisan Dancer and Tony Carroll, who has trained both The Craftymaster and Mumayaz to the top end of the placings with the £100,000 top place still to be decided at time of print at Southwell on Thursday evening. Gemma Tutty has enjoyed a tremendous start to the turf season this year, with notable wins at Doncaster's Lincoln meeting, but will also be celebrating Enola Grey's fantastic achievements in the All-Weather Horse of the Year table today.
We would like to wish you all the best of luck this afternoon, and hope that you have a fantastic afternoon's racing here at Gosforth Park.

Veterinary Care
Horse welfare is a priority at Newcastle Racecourse. At every meeting there are two specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle. Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys. The second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

RACING KNOWLEDGE
All-Weather (AWT)
An artificial racing surface. There are six All-Weather racetracks in Britain (Chelmsford, Kempton, Lingfield, Southwell, Wolverhampton and Newcastle) and one in Ireland (Dundalk), and they stage race meetings throughout the year. There are three types of surface; Fibresand, Polytrack and Tapeta.
Apprentice A trainee Flat jockey connected to the stable of a licensed trainer Apprentices have a weight allowance when they ride in races against professional jockeys and can compete for the annual Apprentice title, given to the winner of the most races during the season.
Bar Term used when describing bookmakers’ prices, e.g. ‘16-1 bar’ means that any horse not mentioned in the list is priced at 16-1 or greater
Bit Metal part of the bridle that sits in a horse’s mouth. The reins are then attached to the bit and used by the jockey to control the horse.
Blinkers A form of headgear worn by the horse, consisting of a hood with cups around the eyes. They are used to limit a horse’s vision and reduce distractions, with the aim of making it concentrate.
Cheekpieces Strips of sheepskin that are attached to the side of a horse’s bridle. They partially obscure a horse’s rear vision, with the aim of getting the horse to concentrate on racing.
Clerk of the Course Racecourse official responsible for the overall racecourse management, including the preparation of the racing surface.
Clerk of the Scales Racecourse official whose chief duty is to weigh the riders before and after a race to ensure the proper weight is carried.
Colours Jacket (‘silks’) worn by the jockey to identify a horse. A horse runs in its owner’s colours which are registered with Weatherbys The colours to be worn by each jockey are shown on racecards.
Conditions race A race in which horses are allotted extra weight according to factors including sex, age, whether they are a previous winner etc. This is a better-class race for horses just below Group or Listed level.
Draw A horse’s starting position in the stalls allotted in races on the Flat. Stall numbers are drawn at random by Weatherbys (except in a handful of top races that allow each horse’s connections, having been randomly selected, to choose the stall number for their horse). A horse with a seemingly advantageous draw is said to be “well drawn” Stalls are used for Flat racing only
Filly Female horse four years old or younger
Furlong 220 yards (one eighth of a mile). The numbered posts on British racecourses count the furlongs back from the winning post.
Handicap A race where each horse is allotted a different weight to carry, according to the official handicap ratings determined by the BHA Handicappers. The theory is that all horses run on a fair and equal basisthe ‘perfect’ handicap being one where all the runners finish in a dead-heat.
Mare Female horse aged five years old or above
Middle Distances On the Flat, races beyond a mile and up to 1m6f are the middle distances. A middle-distance horse is one that runs mainly over such distances or is regarded as being suitable for those distances.
Racecard The runners and riders of the day within this raceday programme.
Rating A measure of the ability of a horse on a scale starting at zero and going into three figures. Flat and Jump racing use different scales; the highestrated Flat horse is usually in the 130s and the top-rated jumper in the 180s.
Sprint Races Flat races run over a distance of five or six furlongs.
Tongue-Tie Strip of material tied around a horse’s tongue and lower jaw to keep it from swallowing its tongue, which can clog its air passage. A horse wearing a tongue-tie is denoted on a racecard by a small t next to the horse’s weight (‘t1’ indicates that the horse is wearing a tongue-tie in a race for the first time).
Visor Similar to blinkers, but with a slit in each eye cup to allow some lateral vision. A horse wearing a visor is denoted on a racecard by a small ‘v’ next to the horse’s weight (‘v1’ indicates that the horse is wearing a visor in a race for the first time).
Weighing In/Out Each jockey (wearing their racing kit and carrying their saddle) must stand on official weighing scales before and after the race, so that the Clerk of the Scales can check that the jockey is carrying the correct weight allotted to their horse. If a jockey is above the allotted weight before the race, their horse can still compete but must carry overweight. When the weights carried by the winner and placed horses have been verified after the race, there will be an announcement that they have ‘weighed in’. This confirms the race result and at this point bookmakers will pay out on successful bets.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
WHAT DOES IT MEAN? COLOUR
Grey (Gr) - light to steel
Bay (B) – from light brown through to dark brown with black mane/tail
Chestnut (Ch) – reddish with a mane/tail to match Roan (Ro) – white hairs mixed with another colour
Brown (Br) – darker than a bay with a black mane/tail
Black (Bl) – black and rare White (Wh) – rare with pink skin.
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

TIPS TO PICKING A WINNER
1 Pick up a racecard and study the form.
2 Look at the jockeys and owners details and racing colours.
BEHAVIOUR
3 Scan the horse’s course and distance record.
4 Check the jockey’s and trainer’s track record.
A TRIP TO THE PARADE RING
Behaviour in the paddock is a good guide to how the horse is feeling before the race. Good signs are pricked ears, alert eyes, but also a calm and relaxed walk.
1. QUARTERS
A defined line of muscle running down the buttock indicates the horse is fit and well. A lack of muscle definition may indicate that the horse is not yet at its peak.
2. RIB CAGE
A defined line of muscle behind the rib cage indicates that the horse is fit and well. If the horse istoofatthismayindicatethehorsemayneedarun beforeitreachesitsoptimumlevel.
3. COAT
The horse should have a shiny coat, mane and tail. A coat that is not shiny may show that the horse is not yet at its best
EASY BETTING STEPS
1 Go to the bookmaker kiosk and review the odds
2 State the race number, the number of your chosen horse, the bet type, the amount you want to bet and hand over the cash remembering to only bet what you can afford.
3 You will then be given a ticket with details of your bet which you will need to present when collecting any winnings from any bookmaker.
4 Get a good vantage point to watch the action and cheer your horse home!
BET TYPES
The easiest bet types are “To win” which is betting on your chosen horse to win or “Each way” which is betting on your chosen horse to come first, second or third.
Good luck!

Trainer title looks set to go down to the wire, with Mick Appleby, Tony Carroll and Charlie Johnston all in contention heading into the final day.
Perennial champion Appleby topped the leaderboard for the first time in early February but the excellent form of Carroll and Johnston has prevented the Rutland handler from closing out his eighth title.
Appleby and Johnston have runners at all three meetings of Good Friday, while Carroll is represented at Lingfield Park and Chelmsford.

ARC ALL-WEATHER BONUS HORSE OF THE YEAR
The All-Weather Horse of the Year bonus forms part of a wider £1 million initiative to reward owners, trainers, jockeys and racing staff connected with the most consistent performers at ARC’s four All-Weather racecourses during the winter season.
Horses are awarded points on the following basis: 1st - 5 points, 2nd - 4 points, 3rd - 3 points, 4th - 2 points and 5th - 1 point.
POSITION NAME OF HORSE POINTS 1 Artisan Dancer (FR) 50 2 The Craftymaster (GB) 47 3 Enola Grey (IRE) 46 4 Mumayaz (IRE) 46 5 Pallas Lord (IRE) 45 6 The Caltonian (GB) 44 7 Gustav Graves (GB) 44 8 Intoxicata (FR) 44 9 Likeashadow (IRE) 44 10 Intervention (GB) 42 HORSE OF THE YEAR – UP TO AND INCLUDING 27 MARCH
ARTISAN DANCER
THE CRAFTY MASTER
This Season’s Horse of the Year competition has gone right down to the wire.
Artisan Dancer has shown remarkable consistency, racking up 50 points in 14 starts throughout the All-Weather season. Two victories and seven second-placed efforts helped the 4yo towards a three-point cushion at the top of the table heading into the final week.
It has been an extremely competitive AllWeather season which is reflected in the Horse of The Year standings with just one point separating second place The Craftymaster (47pts) from joint third-placed horses Enola Grey (46pts) and Mumayaz (46pts).
ENOLA GREY
The rejuvenation of The Craftymaster has been one of the stories of this All-Weather season. The 4yo came close to retirement but has enjoyed a remarkable change in fortune since moving to the Tony Carroll yard back in October rising 24lbs in the handicap.

Many of the leading contenders have already met this season, with Photosynthesis earning a shot at a £35,000 bonus after repelling Blue Prince by a head at Lingfield Park’s AWC Trials Day.
Blue Prince is eyeing a £35,000 bonus of his own after mastering Sommelier in the closing stages of Newcastle’s corresponding trials race, a contest that also featured Bazball and G’Day Mate.
Fire Demon, who disappointed behind Photosynthesis earlier in the season, turned the tables on that rival at Kempton Park in February, with Media Shooter taking second.

SOMMELIER continued his theme of race-by-race progress when runner-up behind re-opposing Blue Prince over C&D on New Year’s Day and, 4lb better off with that rival here, he gets the vote to come out on top with the prospect of more to come. Blue Prince comes here in fine form and he’s a serious player along with Kempton-scorer Fire Demon. Daring Legend, an impressive winner over C&D on his penultimate start, also makes each-way appeal.

Shades Of Summer has a shot at a £75,000 bonus thanks to her AWC Trials Day successes at Newcastle and Lingfield Park.
Nine Tenths, who finished second to Shades Of Summer at Newcastle, is 8lb better off at the weights and arrives on the back of a first Listed success at Wolverhampton. Last year’s runner-up Aramis Grey has twice finished second to Shades Of Summer this season and receives a 4lb pull in the weights from their latest meeting at Lingfield Park.
Further down the handicap, Just A Spark and Sibyl Charm have both been in excellent form, each recording three victories since the turn of the year

Race Summary:
COVER UP continued his rapid rise up the ranks and made it 3-3 on all-weather when readily taking a 5f handicap here 5 weeks ago. The handicapper has reacted but he’s unlikely reached his limit on that evidence and he looks a sure-fire player again with the return to 6f holding no fears. Summerghand and Batal Dubai who finished 2-3 at Lingfield 4 weeks ago are others to consider, with Albasheer and Juan Les Pins just another couple to note in a fiendishly-competitive contest.

Storm Catcher, who was beaten a short-head by Penzance at Newcastle, has been kept fresh since scoring at Wolverhampton on his next start and receives a 5lb pull in the weights.
Oh So Grand has been the leading middle-distance filly this season with three consecutive handicap victories, culminating with a powerpacked display in the BetMGM Winter Oaks at Lingfield Park.
Irish challenger Elegant Man looks full of promise after winning two of his three career starts, with multiple G1 winner Rebel’s Romance the only horse to have had his measure so far.
