FINALS DAY F R I DAY 1 5 A P R I L Raceday Programme Season 9, 2022
RRP £4
Welcome to All-Weather Championships Finals Day Welcome to Newcastle Racecourse and All-Weather Championships Finals Day. We are delighted to welcome spectators back to All-Weather Championships Finals Day for the first time since 2019, and to bring the day to Newcastle for the first time. With over £1,000,000 in prize money available, today is the richest day of racing on an all-weather surface in Europe and in Newcastle’s tapeta we have one of the finest all-weather tracks in the world. History was made here in 2019 as Qatar Racing’s Kameko became the first winner of a Group One race on an all-weather surface in the Vertem Futurity Trophy, and today marks another landmark moment for the racecourse and sport in the city of Newcastle. As ever, our thanks go to all of the racehorse owners, trainers, jockeys and racing staff who have taken part in Season 9 of the All-Weather Championships throughout the winter and to those who have supported today’s Finals Day fixture at Newcastle as well as the new All-Weather Championships Vase at Lingfield Park. Particular congratulations must go to our Champion Trainer Michael Appleby, who wins his fifth consecutive title this afternoon, to make it six overall. Jockey David Probert has had a tremendous season and will be named All-Weather Champion Jockey for the first time this afternoon, with Godolphin once again claiming top spot as Champion Owner. Our thanks go to sponsors Betway and Coral, who once again have been excellent supporters of the All-Weather Championships throughout this season. We would like to wish you all the very best of luck this afternoon and hope that you have a fantastic day’s racing here at Gosforth Park.

RACING KNOWLEDGE All-Weather (AWT) An artificial racing surface. There are six All-Weather racetracks in Britain (Chelmsford, Kempton, Lingfield, Southwell, Wolverhampton and Newcastle) and one in Ireland (Dundalk), and they stage race meetings throughout the year. There are three types of surface; Fibresand, Polytrack and Tapeta. Apprentice A trainee Flat jockey connected to the stable of a licensed trainer. Apprentices have a weight allowance when they ride in races against professional jockeys and can compete for the annual Apprentice title, given to the winner of the most races during the season. Bar Term used when describing bookmakers’ prices, e.g. ‘16-1 bar’ means that any horse not mentioned in the list is priced at 16-1 or greater. Bit Metal part of the bridle that sits in a horse’s mouth. The reins are then attached to the bit and used by the jockey to control the horse. Blinkers A form of headgear worn by the horse, consisting of a hood with cups around the eyes. They are used to limit a horse’s vision and reduce distractions, with the aim of making it concentrate. Cheekpieces Strips of sheepskin that are attached to the side of a horse’s bridle. They partially obscure a horse’s rear vision, with the aim of getting the horse to concentrate on racing. Clerk of the Course Racecourse official responsible for the overall racecourse management, including the preparation of the racing surface. Clerk of the Scales Racecourse official whose chief duty is to weigh the riders before and after a race to ensure the proper weight is carried.
Colours Jacket (‘silks’) worn by the jockey to identify a horse. A horse runs in its owner’s colours which are registered with Weatherbys. The colours to be worn by each jockey are shown on racecards. Conditions race A race in which horses are allotted extra weight according to factors including sex, age, whether they are a previous winner etc. This is a betterclass race for horses just below Group or Listed level. Draw A horse’s starting position in the stalls allotted in races on the Flat. Stall numbers are drawn at random by Weatherbys (except in a handful of top races that allow each horse’s connections, having been randomly selected, to choose the stall number for their horse). A horse with a seemingly advantageous draw is said to be “well drawn”. Stalls are used for Flat racing only. Filly Female horse four years old or younger. Furlong 220 yards (one eighth of a mile). The numbered posts on British racecourses count the furlongs back from the winning post. Handicap A race where each horse is allotted a different weight to carry, according to the official handicap ratings determined by the BHA Handicappers. The theory is that all horses run on a fair and equal basis - the ‘perfect’ handicap being one where all the runners finish in a dead-heat. Mare Female horse aged five years old or above. Middle Distances On the Flat, races beyond a mile and up to 1m6f are the middle distances. A middle-distance horse is one that runs mainly over such distances or is regarded as being suitable for those distances.

Racecard The runners and riders of the day within this raceday programme. Rating A measure of the ability of a horse on a scale starting at zero and going into three figures. Flat and Jump racing use different scales; the highest-rated Flat horse is usually in the 130s and the toprated jumper in the 180s. Sprint Races Flat races run over a distance of five or six furlongs. Tongue-Tie Strip of material tied around a horse’s tongue and lower jaw to keep it from swallowing its tongue, which can clog its air passage. A horse wearing a tongue-tie is denoted on a racecard by a small t next to the horse’s weight (‘t1’ indicates that the horse is wearing a tongue-tie in a race for the first time). Visor Similar to blinkers, but with a slit in each eye cup to allow some lateral vision. A horse wearing a visor is denoted on a racecard by a small ‘v’ next to the horse’s weight (‘v1’ indicates that the horse is wearing a visor in a race for the first time). Weighing In/Out Each jockey (wearing their racing kit and carrying their saddle) must stand on official weighing scales before and after the race, so that the Clerk of the Scales can check that the jockey is carrying the correct weight allotted to their horse. If a jockey is above the allotted weight before the race, their horse can still compete but must carry overweight. When the weights carried by the winner and placed horses have been verified after the race, there will be an announcement that they have ‘weighed in’. This confirms the race result and at this point bookmakers will pay out on successful bets.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. WHERE TO BET There are a variety of places to bet at the course; The Tote has selling points throughout the racecourse – easily identified by the Tote Betting or Totepool signs.
The bookmakers are located in front of the grandstand in the ‘Betting Ring’. The bookmakers display their odds for each race and compete to offer the best price to customers. These are fixed price bets and the amount of your winnings will be printed on your betting slip. Search around to get the best price for your selection. MINIMUM STAKES The Tote has a minimum bet of £2. The bookmakers vary but if they have a minimum it will be shown on the boards displaying their odds. If in doubt – just ask.
TIPS TO PICKING A WINNER
1
Pick up a racecard and study the form.
3
Scan the horse’s course and distance record.
2
Look at the jockeys and owners details and racing colours.
4
Check the jockey’s and trainer’s track record.
A TRIP TO THE PARADE RING BEHAVIOUR
Behaviour in the paddock is a good guide to how the horse is feeling before the race. Good signs are pricked ears, alert eyes, but also a calm and relaxed walk.
3 1
1. QUARTERS
2
A defined line of muscle running down the buttock indicates the horse is fit and well. A lack of muscle definition may indicate that the horse is not yet at its peak.
2. RIB CAGE
A defined line of muscle behind the rib cage indicates that the horse is fit and well. If the horse is too fat this may indicate the horse may need a run before it reaches its optimum level.
3. COAT
The horse should have a shiny coat, mane and tail. A coat that is not shiny may show that the horse is not yet at its best.
EASY BETTING STEPS
1
Go to the bookmaker kiosk and review the odds
3
You will then be given a ticket with details of your bet which you will need to present when collecting any winnings from any bookmaker.
2
State the race number, the number of your chosen horse, the bet type, the amount you want to bet and hand over the cash remembering to only bet what you can afford.
4
Get a good vantage point to watch the action and cheer your horse home!

BET TYPES
The easiest bet types are “To win” which is betting on your chosen horse to win or “Each way” which is betting on your chosen horse to come first, second or third. Good luck!

Finding loving, forever homes for retired racing greyhounds
Greyhounds make wonderful pets. When they finish their racing careers, they retire in every sense of the word. They are friendly, gentle, loyal, good natured and they quickly adapt to family life. They don’t need much exercising and will happily spend most of their time dozing by your side. Owning a greyhound is one of lifes great joys. If you are thinking about a new pet, you are welcome to book an appointment to visit our kennels, see the dogs and ask any questions.

Heading into the final day of the season, Intervention, Proclaimer and Whittle Le Woods are all in with a chance of scooping the Winning Most Horse accolade. Intervention (Mick Appleby) and Proclaimer (Julie Camacho) each have five wins for the season, with Intervention leading on account of three seconds compared to zero for Proclaimer. Intervention does not have an engagement on Good Friday whereas Proclaimer runs in the 4.00pm at Lingfield Park. Whittle Le Woods (Mick Appleby) is a win behind the leaders but, perhaps crucially, has four seconds to his name and could leapfrog the others with a victory in the 2.20pm at Lingfield Park.

Fast Raaj (Yann Barberot/Gregory Benoist) captured the G3 Prix Djebel at Deauville in 2021 and the four-year-old made a sparkling comeback in the Prix Anabaa at Chantilly, France, in March, quickening smartly to score by a length and a half.

Space Cowboy (Richard Spencer/Hollie Doyle) followed up an impressive All-Weather success at Wolverhampton with a convincing front-running victory in a six-furlong conditions race at Newcastle in October. START
El Caballo (Karl Burke/Clifford Lee/Sam James) has been one of the leading lights of this season’s All-Weather Championships with three straights wins, including a six-furlong conditions race at Wolverhampton in December and the Listed Coral Spring Cup over seven furlongs at Lingfield Park in March. Kaboo (Karl Burke/Clifford Lee) was all the rage ahead of his debut at Royal Ascot last year and has gone some way to justifying his reputation with two impressive victories, headlined by a conditions race success at Kempton Park in January.

Rainbow Dreamer (Alan King/Hollie Doyle) showed the benefit of that comeback run on his next appearance in an extended two-mile conditions race at Wolverhampton in January, recording his seventh career victory on the All-Weather. Sleeping Lion (Harry & Roger Charlton/David Probert) finished third in a Listed race at Deauville in December and the seven-year-old relished the return to two miles in a conditions race at Kempton Park in February as he beat Roberto Escobarr by just over a length. Earlofthecotswolds (Nigel Twiston-Davies/Liam Keniry) made the frame behind Rainbow Dreamer and Sleeping Lion and the six-time Jumps winner continued the bright start to his Flat career with an impressive sixlength victory in a two-mile conditions race at Kempton Park in March. Pyledriver (William Muir/Martin Dwyer) arrived at Lingfield Park in November on the back of a first G1 success in the Coronation Cup and duly stamped his class on the opposition to take the Listed Betway Churchill Stakes by half a length under a 7lb penalty. Integrant (Henri-Francois Devin/Maxime Guyon) had solid form at G3 level on turf last year and the son of Frankel is now unbeaten in two starts on the All-Weather thanks to a swooping victory in the Listed Prix Lyphard at Deauville, France, in November. Al Zaraqaan (Archie Watson/Danny Tudhope) won all three of his starts on the All-Weather for William Haggas and the former Shadwell runner made the perfect start for new connections in a 10-furlong conditions race at Newcastle in January.
RACE DISTANCE:
1M 2F 42Y PRIZE MONEY:
Alenquer (William Haggas/Cieren Fallon), who was G1-placed on two occasions last year, found 10 furlongs around Lingfield Park no problem as he broke the course record in the G3 Betway Winter Derby in February, with G1 winner Lord North back in second.

Veterinary Care
Horse welfare is a priority at Newcastle Racecourse. At every meeting there are two specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle. Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys. The second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.
