The QIPCO Guineas Festival

FRIDAY 3RD MAY 2024
Official Racecard: £3.50

SPONSORS WELCOME
On behalf of my brothers and fellow directors of QIPCO, I am proud and delighted to welcome you to what promises to be another exceptional QIPCO Guineas Festival at Newmarket.
This world-famous meeting featuring the year’s first two British Classics, the QIPCO 2000 Guineas and the QIPCO 1000 Guineas, has been a part of our sponsorship portfolio since the launch of QIPCO British Champions Series in 2011 The innovative series begins this weekend and runs until QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot in October, incorporating the Flat season’s biggest prizes and festivals and showcasing the preeminent human and equine participants.
Our support for the sport does not end with sponsorship; we want to encourage the next generation of racegoers Last year we launched ‘Club 26’ in conjunction with QIPCO British Champions Series, in order to bring 18 to 26-year-olds closer to the action.
This free-to-join initiative has had an enormously successful first 12 months and has offered discounted tickets to 26 of the best racedays in the calendar, featuring all 35 races in QIPCO British Champions Series as well as members events and behindthe-scenes tours. One has been scheduled nearby this very weekend, with fans invited to visit the historic Dalham Hall Stud. Under 18s are also admitted free through all three days here.
The QIPCO British Champions Series Hall of Fame was launched in 2021, marking the 10th anniversary of our sponsorship. Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Sir Henry Cecil and Frankie Dettori are among the luminaries

to have been inducted so far, along with cherished horses such as Frankel, Sea The Stars and Pebbles.
This year’s newest inductee should need little introduction as Aidan O’Brien is celebrated as among the greatest trainers in history already and has dominated Group 1 races around Europe for more than two decades.
My brothers and I share a deep respect for racing’s history and our own passion has been stoked by the action at the QIPCO Guineas Festival. Not long after the birth of Qatar Racing, we finished second in the 200th running of the QIPCO 1000 Guineas with Just The Judge. Then, four years ago, we were granted an unforgettable success as our beloved colt Kameko became the fastest ever winner of the QIPCO 2000 Guineas
Record-breaking Kameko, victorious at this meeting in 2020, is now among the Qatar Racing stallions at our ownership and breeding operation at Tweenhills in Gloucestershire and his first runners are hitting the track.
While we are hopeful that his sons and daughters will be shining brightly, we wish all connections similar good fortunes throughout 2024 QIPCO British Champions Series and look forward to celebrating another memorable season in this sport that provides us all with so much joy.
HH Sheikh Hamad bin Abdullah Al Thani Chief Executive Officer QIPCO Holding

A warm welcome to the Rowley Mile and the first day of the QIPCO Guineas Festival. We have three fantastic days of racing to look forward to, along with entertainment for all to enjoy off the track.
Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank QIPCO and British Champions Series for their support across the next three days here at Newmarket.
We also thank William Hill and Darley for their generous support across today’s card.
We have a six-race card to look forward to this afternoon, with the feature race, the Group 2 William Hill Jockey Club Stakes, run over 1 mile and 2 furlongs, often a chance to see some of the leading middle-distance horses for the first time in the season. Al Kazeem, Shirocco and Sixties Icon are amongst some of the great horses who have added their name to the roll of honour for this race.
With Aston Martin as the Official Luxury Car Partner of the Jockey Club, there are 2 luxury high-performance cars on show on the Grandstand and Paddock lawn located between the parade ring and the grandstand ‘Make sure you add this to your day and see the Aston Martin DB12 and the all-new Aston Martin DBX – first seen by the public only last month.
Looking ahead, we have two more fantastic days of racing as the QIPCO Guineas Festival continues, with both Classics, the QIPCO 2000 Guineas and QIPCO 1000 Guineas still to come. There are tickets available for both these days either online, or on the gate.
Across the season, we would like to thank the European Breeders Fund for their contributions to prize money and Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai for their continued sponsorship of our Owners and Trainers facility.
I hope that you all have a wonderful time here at Newmarket and wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck.
Warm wishes,
Sophie Able Newmarket Racecourses and International Director

MEETING 04/05/2024

As a leading distributor of horse feed, bedding and supplements in the greater GCC area, I am once again immensely proud to support the Jockey Club at Newmarket Racecourses for the 2024 season. Newmarket is credited as being where thoroughbred racing first started which is why so many from every corner of the world assemble and appreciate The Rowley Mile and The July Course.
As ever, the enthusiasm of Sophie Able and her team at Newmarket translates into a top class service for Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Stable Staff and for that we are deeply grateful.
I would like to wish all those visiting Newmarket throughout the 2024 season, the very best of luck.
Have a wonderful day at the races today.

DRAW for flat racing only, describes a horse’s position in the starting stalls, drawn randomly the day before shortly after the horses are declared to run
EVENS or EVEN MONEY when your stake exactly equals your winningsthus £5 at evens wins a further £5

YANKEE combination bet involving four selections in different races: six doubles, four trebles and one four-horse accumulator - eleven bets
YEARLING horse of either sex from 1 January to 31 December of the year following its birth.

RACE ONE
MAGIC DREAM did everything right bar getting her head in front on debut and, with improvement expected, this half-sister to Group 1 winner Naval Crown should be able to get off the mark at the second attempt. Mallavelly seemed a different proposition on her first start as a three-year-old when second here over 1m last month, and stepping up in trip looks like the correct move A stablemate of the selection, Precious Jewel looks to be the pick of the newcomers, while Sea Just In Time is worth a second look for the in-form William Haggas team.
RACE TWO
Trainer Charlie Appleby has landed this contest for the last two years and he looks to have another ideal candidate in the unbeaten ENDLESS VICTORY, who was made to work hard for his victory over C&D last month The attitude he showed that day should stand him in good stead as he looks to see off Whip Cracker and Caviar Heights, who only had a short-head separating them when second and third respectively in the Feilden Stakes here recently. Sayedaty Sadaty showed up on well on his return in the Burradon Stakes and going up in trip may eke out further improvement.
RACE THREE
A taking winner over 6f at the Craven meeting here last month, DARK THIRTY should have no issues with going back up in trip and a 3lb rise for that success could prove quite lenient Richard Hannon’s admirable sort is narrowly preferred to Thunder Ball, who went well for a long way in the Spring Cup over 1m at Newbury before weakening into fourth late in the piece. Noble Dynasty shaped with promise on his return from a long absence at Meydan, while English Oak is another key player trying this trip for the first time since his debut last May. Completing the shortlist are Final Watch, Saint Lawrence and Zouky.
RACE FOUR
A small but select field of improving three-year-olds possibly headed by INDIAN RUN, who took the Group 3 Acomb Stakes at York last August before coming last in the Dewhurst Stakes, when the soft ground did not help his chances. If he has trained on, then he could prove too good for the likes of Boiling Point and Bold Style, who finished a good second and third respectively over this C&D last month and they will be looking to put their race-fitness to good use as they rise in class.
RACE FIVE
Naqeeb is interesting if a gelding operation brings about some improvement, but he still needs to find more if he wants get the better of CASTLE WAY. Fourth at Meydan on his return in March before scoping badly after the race and given time to recover, he can hopefully recapture his better form, which includes three wins at Newmarket (two on this course). Time Lock is a classy C&D winner, but it is noted he is yet to win on his first start of the season.
RACE SIX
L’Ennemi seems worth a market check on his first start for Julie Camacho, with a mark of 81 looking workable after a good third at Haydock on his final start of 2023 He can go well, but Charlie Appleby has won three of the last seven runnings of this race and has a solid chance again with SILENT AGE. The selection threw away the race at the start at Newcastle but had won his previous two outings and may do better now in handicap company on his turf bow. The hat-trick seeking Rocking Tree may prove best of the rest.

History of Newmarket
Although humankind has raced horses since the dawn of civilisation – racing was an event at the ancient Greek Olympiads, for example – it is only in relatively recent history that it has been staged on an organised basis. In 1740 the government of Sir Robert Walpole, the de facto first Prime Minister of Great Britain, became concerned at the popularity of racing and the level of malpractice in the sport resulting from gambling. As a result, Walpole’s government introduced laws on minimum prize money values and weights to be carried in races The new laws proved ineffectual in its efforts to make racing less popular but it did have an impact on a group of racing enthusiasts who, fearing further government interference, came together in the coffee houses of London to form their own regulatory body for racing And so, in 1750 The Jockey Club emerged. Despite its name, The Jockey Club was not made up of jockeys but more members of high society – it was an 18th Century tradition that members of trades and professions were referred to by a description of their occupation – so what Mr Justice Hangem was to the judiciary, those connected to the racing would be known as Mr Jockie (the old spelling of Jockey) followed by surname. For example, an early member of The Jockey Club was Captain Richard Vernon – known in horseracing circles as “Mr Jockie Vernon”. The early activities of The Jockey Club were centred on the Star & Garter tavern on London’s Pall Mall, before it established its first formal London headquarters in Old Bond Street
While The Jockey Club was formally established and headquartered in London, Newmarket had emerged as the pre-eminent venue for horseracing in Great Britain under the dynasty of the House of Stuart. In 1752 The Jockey Club leased a plot of land and built a coffee house in the Suffolk town, a building which still exists today and has been beautifully restored and maintained as part of The Jockey Club Rooms on Newmarket High Street The Jockey Club’s presence in Newmarket was strengthened by the activities of one of its 19th Century members, Lord George Bentinck
It was Bentinck who provided the funds which enabled The Jockey Club to purchase the freehold of the land where The Jockey Club Rooms now stand. As the owner as a large expanse ofNewmarketHeath,Bentinckturnedacresofscrublandovertograssandpurchasedterritory adjacent to it to establish the gallops which still exist to this day. The link between the town of Newmarket and The Jockey Club remains as strong as ever to this day. The historic Jockey Club Rooms, which were rebuilt and expanded in the 20th Century, house one of the finest collections of equestrian art to be found anywhere in the world and serve as accommodation for visiting members of The Jockey Club as well as being available to members of the public on a commercial basis The Jockey Club also operates the two racecourses in Newmarket –the Rowley Mile and the July Course - operates and maintains the gallops in the town under the banner of Jockey Club Estates and also runs The National Stud, a renowned and highlyregarded centre of breeding excellence.
The connection between Newmarket and the horse is one of great antiquity. Queen Boadicea of the Iceni founded a Royal stud at Exning in the years following the death of Jesus Christ. Refusing to surrender to the Romans in 60AD Queen Boadicea took her own life by poisoning, leaving behind a legacy of a section of heathland south of Exning. That heathland contained six miles of earthwork fortifications which in time became to be referred to as the Devil’s Dyke It was more than 1,000 years after the death of Queen Boadicea that Sir Richard d’Argentine developed a “New Market” on land just south of Exning he had acquitted from the marriage dowry of his bride Cassandr d’I’Isle. The “New Market” developed into the town of Newmarket, which saw its population increase substantially in 1227 as people settled there to escape the plague. In the 17th Century Newmarket became a favourite destination of King James I and he moved the Royal court to the town for a time and built a palace. It was James’s courtiers who first raced horses on Newmarket Heath, with the first match race recorded as having taken place on March 8th 1622 Newmarket was further developed by James’s son Charles I who erected the first Grandstand on Newmarket Heath and by his grandson Charles II On his restoration to the throne in 1660, Charles II built a new palace in Newmarket which included a secret passage to the home of his mistress Nell Gwynn. The “Merry Monarch” was a proficient rider and won the first running of the Town Plate – a unique contest for amateur riders which exists to this day – on October 14th 1671.

SPOTLIGHT ON KAMEKO AND TWEENHILLS STUD

KAMEKO THE
FASTEST QIPCO 2000 GUINEAS WINNER
The 2020 running of the QIPCO 2000 Guineas may have been staged behind closed doors due to the ongoing restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic but that did not prevent a highly memorable renewal on the track with a new race-record time being set.
A field of 15 went to the post for the 212th staging of the mile Classic with the market headed at 5-6 by the Godolphin-owned Pinatubo, who had been unbeaten in six runs as a juvenile culminating with victory in the Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes on the Rowley Mile. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 QIPCO 2000 Guineas was held a month later than normal on June 6th and all runners were making their seasonal debut.
Among Pinatubo’s 15 rivals was a colt called Kameko, an American-bred son of Kitten’s Joy who had been purchased by David Redvers for Qatar Racing at Keeneland in 2018. Sent into training with Andrew Balding at Kingsclere, Kameko made an instant impact on the racecourse when successful in a maiden at Sandown Park in July 2019. After two narrow defeats back at Sandown Park in the Group Two Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket, Kameko ended 2019 in perfect style when successful in the Group One Futurity Trophy Stakes, which that year was run on Tapeta at Newcastle following the abandonment of Doncaster due to waterlogging.
Partnered in the QIPCO 2000 Guineas by Oisin Murphy, as he was throughout his career, Kameko travelled strongly throughout. He began to make a forward move a quarter of a mile from home and stayed on strongly to take the lead inside the final furlong. He went on to win by a neck from Wichita with Pinatubo another length away in third. The winning time of 1m 34.72s was the fastest in 2000 Guineas history. Andrew Balding commented afterwards: “The biggest regret of dad’s career was not winning the Guineas, it’s good to have it on the CV “It’s a massive thrill. We’ve been looking forward to the race for a long time but the Guineas is the Guineas whenever it is run. I’m thrilled for Oisin, the Qatar Racing team and everyone at Kingsclere.” Kameko went on to race a further five times, including finishing fourth in the Derby at Epsom Downs and making a successful return to Newmarket in the Group Two Joel Stakes. He currently stands as a stallion at Tweenhills Farm & Stud in Gloucestershire with his first two-year-olds on the track this season.
A DAY IN THE LIFE WITH Alicia Plaistow
Barn Supervisor at Tweenhills Stud
How long have you been at Tweenhills and what’s your role?
I have been at Tweenhills for six years, and I am in charge of the mares and foals.
What does a normal day look like for you?
At the start of the day, I come in and check that all the foals are OK and go through and give any medications that are needed We then turn out all the mares and foals into either the all-weather turnouts or into the paddocks for the day. The vet round takes place and any that are needed to, are seen to. Sometimes we have the farrier, so each day is different to the next
How many foals do you have at the moment?
We have foaled nearly 70 and have 9 left to foal We’ve had a busy season, but the end is in sight!
What’syourfavouritepartofthejob?
I love looking after the babies, it’s the best part of the job. I love seeing the foals grow and they are changing all the time.
Who’s your favourite foal this year?
Theres too many to choose from! But if I had to pick one it would be Wrens Breath, a relatively new foal and only a week old!
Tell me about Kameko’s foals…
They are always quite sassy, cheeky, and forward going They are always up to mischief He’s passed on the white faces, the looks and they’re strong foals. He stamps them well.
Kameko’s first two-year-olds run this year, are there any you’re excited about to see first time?
Ripple Effect was always a favourite, and a yard favourite She has a lovely flashy filly and hopefully she does something good this year
One to watch out for?
Out Of The Stars was a filly out of Out Of The Flames, trained by Archie Watson I remember her well as a foal She went into training, won, and has since come back here to become a broodmare and have a foal of her own.

An ultra-competitive handicap which can go the way of ENGLISH OAK, who did well under the circumstances given his position moretowardsthe centre ofthetrackwhen finishing runner-up at Ascot over 6f on his final 3-y-o start and looks just the type to progress again this season. Thunder Ball is shaping up well this term, so he may emerge as the main danger, with Noble Dynasty and course-regular Final Watch another couple to look out for, as well.

LOOKING AHEAD TO THE QIPCO 1000 GUINEAS ON SUNDAY
Trainer Karl Burke admits an English Classic victory would be “lovely to have on your CV” and heads to Newmarket this weekend with his best chances yet in the first two Classics of the season.
In the QIPCO 1000 Guineas, Burke’s principal hope is Fallen Angel, the current Favourite with William Hill, the official betting partner of the QIPCO Guineas Festival
The three-year-old Too Darn Hot filly, who was homebred by owner Steve Parkin, won three of her four outings in 2023, capped by victory in the Group One Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh in Ireland. Her preparation for the QIPCO 1000 Guineas included a racecourse gallop at Newmarket on April 17th
Burke, who trains from the historic Spigot Lodge at Middleham in North Yorkshire, said: “Fallen Angel is in great shape.
“She needed the gallop at the Craven Meeting but came out of it really well and took a big step forward. She did a nice piece of work on Friday and will have a little blowout tomorrow and that will about be her ready to go, with just a couple of canters for the rest of the week I am very happy with her
“The gallop brought her on fitness-wise and just sharpened her mind They have been going up and down the same gallops at Middleham all winter and it is great to get them away to concentrate the mind We took her down overnight, so it was the whole raceday scenario for her.
“She ran four times last season, including travelling to Ireland. She travels well, but a gallop helps to put on their raceday head and definitely helps to bring them forward.
“From the end of last season, the plan was always to go straight to the Guineas I was keen to run in the Fillies’ Mile at the end of last season but Steve (Parkin) was pretty adamant not to and as it turned out, with that race run on pretty heavy ground, it was the right decision
“The mile holds no qualms for her and she should improve for it If you watch all her races, she is doing her best work at the end and doesn’t do much when she hits the front. She takes everything in her stride and that is why she probably gets a bit lazy at home.
“I think the opposition has got us to beat, I really do. The formbook says they have – I know Ballydoyle will give plenty of excuses for Ylang Ylang’s defeat in the Moyglare but she has got 9 or 10 lengths to make up on us and on a line through Darnation and the third from the Fillies’ Mile (See The Fire), we should have the beating of her. Dance Sequence got beat the other day and that form doesn’t look strong enough to win a Guineas
“On all known form, I think we deserve to be favourite.”
On Saturday, Burke saddles what could prove to be the dark horse of the race in the QIPCO 2000 Guineas with Night Raider. The Dark Angel colt has won both his starts in impressive fashion on the all-weather at Southwell in December and March.
Burke said: “He’s a lovely animal and whatever he does on Saturday, he is going to keep on improving as he has a lot of scope I am sure he is a Group One horse in the making.
“It could be a case of whether Saturday comes too soon but he has a lot of potential and a lot of ability I don’t think I’ve seen a horse work better in the 23 years we’ve been up here on the Polytrack at Middleham
“He has a lot of things against him – it will be his first run on turf and his first proper gallop on turf was only at the Craven Meeting He came out of that really well and we did it to give him the experience
“He has a high cruising speed and can quicken off it as well Clifford Lee rode him for the first time in a long time today as his regular work rider Rhona Pindar is on holiday. Cliff said he is like driving a car with 10 gears – every time you move on him, he goes forward.
“Danny (Tudhope) who rides him on Saturday loves him and I wouldn’t mind betting there will be nothing travelling better a furlong and a half out.
“He has a lot to prove but has a lot of ability and am looking forward to seeing him run. There are a few horses in there with bigger reputations and hopefully we can burst a few balloons.”
The last year has been a difficult one for the 60-year-old Burke, having undergone treatment for bowel cancer
He said: “Once the chemotherapy finished and I got back working around Christmas time, it has taken my mind off things like hospital visits and further check-ups that I have to have over the next couple of years.
“There are always plenty of things to think about in this job! The operation was fairly straightforward and I even attended a couple of yearling sales but once the chemotherapy started I was in the office and out for 1 or 2 lots but I got tired pretty quickly as anybody who has had it will know Doing plenty of planning in my head kept me occupied.
“I probably wouldn’t want to do this job now without my family They all have the pieces of the business they look after. Going back 10, 15, 20 years Elaine (wife) and myself were trying to do everything, so Kelly and Lucy (daughters) have taken a lot of weight and workload off of us.
“We now have a couple of grandkids on the way. Kelly is due to give birth on May 7th so maybe it will come this weekend, and Lucy is due in August.”

The World’s Greatest Flat Race

HISTORY OF THE WILLIAM HILL JOCKEY CLUB STAKES
The Jockey Club Stakes was first staged in 1894 and up until 1963 was staged over 10 furlongs in the autumn Initially, it was open to three-year-olds and upwards but from 1963 onwards it has been restricted to older horses. It was also in 1963 that the contest was moved to be run at the Guineas Festival and increased in distance to a mile and a half.
Isinglass, who the previous year had won the Triple Crown, won the first running in 1894 and in its early history the contest was frequently won by Classic winners with Persimmon (1896), Flying Fox (1899), Sceptre (1897), Rock Sand (1904) and St Amant (1905) all featuring on the roll of honour.
The last Derby winner to also be successful in The Jockey Club Stakes was St Paddy (1961) and since the changes to the contest in 1963 it tends now to be contested by improving older horses. Phardante is the only multiple winner, recording back-to-back triumphs in 1986 and 1987
The late Lester Piggott is the most successful jockey of all-time in The Jockey Club Stakes with seven victories courtesy of Holmbush (1950), Nucleus (1955), Court Prince (1959), St Paddy (1961), Knockroe (1972), Relay Race (1974) and Ardross (1982) Among current riders, Ryan Moore and Frankie Dettori lead the way with three victories apiece.
Alec Taylor, Jr saddled a record nine winners of The Jockey Club Stakes with Love Wisely (1897), Sceptre (1903), Sancy (1907), Lemberg (1910), Trois Temps (1914), Prince Chimay (1918), Lady Juror (1922), Inkerman (1923) and Book Law (1927)
Sir Michael Stoute is the most successful current trainer with eight wins – Electric (1981), Rock Hopper (1991), Zinaad (1993), Time Allowed (1997), Blueprint (2000), Gamut (2004), Gospel Choir (2014) and Exosphere (2016)

THE WILLIAM HILL JOCKEY CLUB STAKES
RACE DESCRIPTION: For four-year-olds and above, this one and a half mile contest is a Group 2 and will attract some of the highest-quality middle distance horses around this season Unlike in a handicap when a horse’s official rating reflects the weight that they must carry, in a Group 2 all runners carry the same weight regardless of any previous form. In this case colts and geldings carry 9st 1lb and fillies 8st 12lb although any runner which has already won a Group 1 or 2 race will be issued with a 3lb penalty.

Harry Charlton has his team in fine form so the suggestion is TIME LOCK who is 2-2 over C&D, including a Group 3 last autumn. With doubts about Astro King’s stamina it could be that the chief threat comes from Godolphin’s Castle Way.

IMPORTANT NOTICES
RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Newmarket Racecourses employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
