SUNDAY 5TH MAY 2024
Official Racecard: £3.50
On behalf of my brothers and fellow directors of QIPCO, I am proud and delighted to welcome you to what promises to be another exceptional QIPCO Guineas Festival at Newmarket.
This world-famous meeting featuring the year’s first two British Classics, the QIPCO 2000 Guineas and the QIPCO 1000 Guineas, has been a part of our sponsorship portfolio since the launch of QIPCO British Champions Series in 2011 The innovative series begins this weekend and runs until QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot in October, incorporating the Flat season’s biggest prizes and festivals and showcasing the preeminent human and equine participants.
Our support for the sport does not end with sponsorship; we want to encourage the next generation of racegoers Last year we launched ‘Club 26’ in conjunction with QIPCO British Champions Series, in order to bring 18 to 26-year-olds closer to the action.
This free-to-join initiative has had an enormously successful first 12 months and has offered discounted tickets to 26 of the best racedays in the calendar, featuring all 35 races in QIPCO British Champions Series as well as members events and behindthe-scenes tours. One has been scheduled nearby this very weekend, with fans invited to visit the historic Dalham Hall Stud. Under 18s are also admitted free through all three days here.
The QIPCO British Champions Series Hall of Fame was launched in 2021, marking the 10th anniversary of our sponsorship. Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Sir Henry Cecil and Frankie Dettori are among the luminaries
to have been inducted so far, along with cherished horses such as Frankel, Sea The Stars and Pebbles.
This year’s newest inductee should need little introduction as Aidan O’Brien is celebrated as among the greatest trainers in history already and has dominated Group 1 races around Europe for more than two decades.
My brothers and I share a deep respect for racing’s history and our own passion has been stoked by the action at the QIPCO Guineas Festival. Not long after the birth of Qatar Racing, we finished second in the 200th running of the QIPCO 1000 Guineas with Just The Judge. Then, four years ago, we were granted an unforgettable success as our beloved colt Kameko became the fastest ever winner of the QIPCO 2000 Guineas
Record-breaking Kameko, victorious at this meeting in 2020, is now among the Qatar Racing stallions at our ownership and breeding operation at Tweenhills in Gloucestershire and his first runners are hitting the track.
While we are hopeful that his sons and daughters will be shining brightly, we wish all connections similar good fortunes throughout 2024 QIPCO British Champions Series and look forward to celebrating another memorable season in this sport that provides us all with so much joy.
HH Sheikh Hamad bin Abdullah Al Thani Chief Executive Officer QIPCO HoldingA warm welcome to Newmarket Racecourse and to QIPCO 1000 Guineas Day, the final day of the three-day QIPCO Guineas Festival, and a chance to see some of the leading three-year-old fillies in action.
Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank both QIPCO and British Champions Series for their support across the three days of the QIPCO Guineas Festival here at the Rowley Mile. We are also extremely grateful to William Hill, Tattersalls for their generous sponsorship across today’s card. We again look forward to partnering with World Pool and the Hong Kong Jockey Club for the addition of the 1000 Guineas for the first time today.
There are two races this afternoon supported by Tattersalls as part of the new High Value Developmental Race Series which runs across 2024. The races offer enhanced prize money to horses embarking on the early stages of their careers, aiming to support the domestic breeding industry and encourage the purchase and racing of young talent in Britain. The feature race today is the QIPCO 1000 Guineas, the first of the Classics for three-yearold fillies. Since the race’s inception, some of the true greats of flat racing have made their way onto the roll of honour, including Pretty Polly, Sun Chariot and Oh So Sharp, whilst more recently Love is one of the leading names to have taken the honours.
Head down to the Garden enclosure to enjoy the British Champion Series fan zone, which includes a bouncy castle, inflatable helter skelter and a jockey Master Class ahead of racing. On the Boulevard Lawn, Keith Deller and Russ Bray will be providing a chance to test your darts skills throughout the afternoon. Have a go on our F1 simulator, or take your chances at human table football!
Make sure to stick around after racing, with Chris Stark taking to the stage for a fun upbeat DJ set down at the Hyperion Lawn.
Across the season, we would like to thank the European Breeders Fund for their contributions to prize money and Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai for their continued sponsorship of our Owners and Trainers facility.
I hope that you all have a wonderful time here at Newmarket and wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck.
Warm wishes,

As a leading distributor of horse feed, bedding and supplements in the greater GCC area, I am once again immensely proud to support the Jockey Club at Newmarket Racecourses for the 2024 season. Newmarket is credited as being where thoroughbred racing first started which is why so many from every corner of the world assemble and appreciate The Rowley Mile and The July Course.
As ever, the enthusiasm of Sophie Able and her team at Newmarket translates into a top class service for Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Stable Staff and for that we are deeply grateful.
I would like to wish all those visiting Newmarket throughout the 2024 season, the very best of luck.
Have a wonderful day at the races today.
Never beaten by SP
Tote or Starting Price? We’ll pay whichever is better on win bets.
With six of the eight a winner last time out, this looks better than average and although Galileo filly Winter Snowfall is bred to be special, she will need to improve from her Chelmsford maiden win to get the better of KALPANA First and second in her two all-weather starts, she stepped up a gear to win a handicap here by 10 lengths and more than warrants a crack at this better contest. Lunar Eclipse holds an Oaks entry and may hold Friendly Soul in the race for third
Stay Alert is officially the best horse in this line-up, but she hasn’t won since September 2022 and is passed over on her first start of the season. Running Lion heads the early betting after her eighth in the Group 1 Champion Fillies and Mares last October but her best win so far was in Listed class, and a chance is taken on SILVER LADY Lightly raced with just five starts, she won the Group 2 Cape Verdi at Meydan in January and looks all set for a successful season.
HMS President won this last year for Alan King and is capable of another decent showing, despite carrying an extra 8lb on this occasion. New London has every chance in handicap company after coming home fourth and third at Meydan in Group 3 contests, but asking him to give 10lb to INTINSO looks a big ask A winner at Wolverhampton in March and a running-on third at Kempton since, this trip may bring plenty of improvement from the lightly-raced four-year-old

Charlie Appleby and Godolphin throw three darts at this contest and although Lucky Gift and Ballet Show both have excellent pedigrees, it is MOUNTAIN BREEZE, a close relative of three-time Group 1 winner Pinatubo, who captures the imagination as the main suggestion here. We have yet to see the best of Appleby’s current crop of juveniles but this regally-bred trio suggests the ball is about to gather strong momentum Mademoiselle and River Seine are a couple of others to monitor in the betting.
There was plenty of encouragement to be taken from THE ACTOR’s never-nearer second on debut over C&D last month and that experience should stand him in good stead going forward Richard Hannon’s colt makes most appeal of those who have raced, although a big performance from newcomer Symbol Of Honour wouldn’t surprise The Havana Grey colt is a half-brother to the Group 1-placed Dragon Symbol and market support could prove significant Al Qudra is also noted.
Cynosure opened his account a shade cosily on his reappearance in a novice at Lingfield last month His current rating of 85 shouldn’t prevent another bold bid, but there is a sneaking suspicion that BLACK RUN could be the better handicapped of the two. The son of Nathaniel shaped better than the beaten distance suggests on his sixth-placed finish in a Group 3 at Longchamp in April and he might have too much class for these rivals Sea The Thunder and Mai Dubai also warrant closer examination
The William Hill Pretty Polly Stakes takes place over 10 furlongs and commemorates the outstanding Pretty Polly, a winner of 22 of her 44 starts including the Fillies’ Triple Crown in 1904.
A Listed contest for three-year-old fillies, the William Hill Pretty Polly Stakes primarily serves as a trial for the Oaks at Epsom Downs. Since the Newmarket contest was established in 1961, four fillies have completed the double.
The first of these was Queen Elizabeth II’s Dunfermline in 1977 The great filly, who was trained by Dick Hern and ridden by Willie Carson, went on to prove herself among the very best of her generation with a second Classic success in the St Leger at Doncaster later in the season.
Next up was the outstanding Ouija Board, the 2004 heroine. Lord Derby’s homebred daughter of Cape Cross, trained in Newmarket by Ed Dunlop, would go on to win seven Group One contests over the course of her career, with her Oaks success followed by top-level victories across the globe including in the USA and Hong Kong If that was not enough, at stud Ouija Board went on to produce the 2014 Derby winner Australia.
The two most recent fillies to complete the Pretty Polly-Oaks double came in back-to-back years – Talent (2013) and Taghrooda (2014)
RACE DESCRIPTION: This one mile, two furlong contest for three-year-old fillies is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Initially, the weights are set at 9st for each runner before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed or Group 3 success. Horses that have already won at Group 1 or 2 level are not permitted to enter.
British Stallion Studs have contributed nearly £2MILLION to Flat and National Hunt prize money during 2024 via the British EBF.

A relatively new addition to the Pattern race programme, the Dahlia Stakes was established in 1997 as a Listed contest. It was upgraded to Group Three status in 2004 and was further boosted to Group Two level in 2015.
ThecontestcommemoratesthegreatracemareDahlia,whowasatruepioneerofinternational racing in the 1970s.
Trained in France for the majority of her career by Maurice Zilber for American owner Nelson Bunker Hunt, Dahlia was the first female racehorse in history to earn over $1 million in prize money. Her victories spanned the globe, with her most high-profile wins in Britain coming in Ascot’s King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 1973 and 1974
Run over a mile and a furlong for females aged four and above, the Dahlia Stakes has been won by some outstanding performers in its short history and true to Dahlia’s legacy, several winners have gone on to prove themselves on the international stage
Izzi Top (2012) went to register Group One victories in Ireland and France while Dank (2013) subsequently proved herself against the best in North America with victories in the Beverly D Stakes and Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf.
French raider Esoterique (2014) also went on to prove herself at the highest level, with two subsequent Group One wins in France before she returned to Newmarket to win the Group One Sun Chariot Stakes in 2015
Lady Bowthorpe (2021) subsequently landed the Group One Nassau Stakes at Glorious Goodwood while a year later Dreamloper (2022) showed she was among the very best milers of her generation with Group One wins in France in the Prix d’Ispahan and Prix du Moulin
RACE DESCRIPTION: Run over a mile and one furlong, this contest for fillies who are four-year-olds and older is a Group 2 contest and will attract some of the best around this season. Unlike in a handicap when a horse’s official rating reflects the weight that they must carry, in a Group 2 all runners carry the same weight regardless of any previous form. In this case, 9st is the mark, although any runner which has already won a Group 2 race will be issued with a 3lb penalty and any winner of a Group 1 contest is given a 5lb penalty to shoulder
for fouryrs old and upwards fillies and mares Total prize fund £125000 Owners Prize Money 1st £55700, 2nd £22863, 3rd £11438, 4th £5713, 5th £2863, 6th £1425. (PenaltyValue £70887.50)

The QIPCO 1000 Guineas is the fillies’ equivalent of the QIPCO 2000 Guineas, both of which are run over the historic Rowley Mile at Newmarket As with the 2000 Guineas, the Classic is so named because the original prize fund was 1,000 Guineas
The youngest of the British Classics, the 1000 Guineas was first staged in 1814 and won by Charlotte, ridden by Bill Clift and owned by Christopher Wilson, the same combination responsible for Wizard, the initial victor of the 2000 Guineas
Like the QIPCO 2000 Guineas, the QIPCO 1000 Guineas is part of the QIPCO British Champions Series and has a total prize fund of £500,000 in 2024
Four fillies have completed the 1000 Guineas-2000 Guineas double. The last was Sceptre in 1902, who was also successful in the Oaks and St Leger. The other fillies to win both Newmarket Classics are Crucifix (1840), Formosa (1868) and Pilgrimage (1878).
In 1825, the Duke of Grafton’s Tontine was the sole participant in the 1000 Guineas. At the other end of the spectrum, the largest field was 29 in 1926, when Pillion was successful at 25-1. The maximum field size allowed now is 25.
Homecoming Queen recorded the greatest winning margin since 1900 when scoring by nine lengths in 2012 under Ryan Moore. During the same period, six winners have scraped home by a short-head, namely Atmah (1911), Fair Isle (1930), Highclere (1974), Nocturnal Spree (1975), Oh So Sharp (1985) and Las Meninas (1994). Jacqueline Quest was a nose in front of Special Duty in the 2010 renewal only for the places to be reversed in the stewards’ room.
The longest-priced 1000 Guineas winner is Billesdon Brook, returned at 66-1 in 2018. The shortest-priced was Crucifix, whose odds were 1-10 when taking the 1840 renewal.
A total of 81 of the 210 runnings have been won by either the favourite or a joint-favourite – a strike rate of 38.5 per cent Sent off at 11-10, Minding in 2016 was the most recent winning favourite
A total of 49 fillies have won both the 1000 Guineas and Oaks at Epsom Downs. Neva was the first in 1817 and Love the latest in 2020.
One of the true heroines of the 1000 Guineas was Tagalie, successful in 1912 and the only winner to go on and land the Derby.
Sceptre, successful in the 1902 1000 Guineas, remains the only winner of four British Classics outright, having also succeeded in the 2000 Guineas, Oaks and St Leger She also finished fourth in the only other British Classic, the Derby.
Hannah captured the 1000 Guineas in 1871 and was one of the most outstanding fillies of her era. She progressed to claim the fillies’ Triple Crown - the 1000 Guineas, the Oaks and St Leger.
Another six fillies have also managed this feat –Apology (1874), La Fleche (1892), Pretty Polly (1904), Sun Chariot (1942), Meld (1985) and Oh So Sharp (1985)
A total of 14 winners since 1900 have been trained in Ireland - Rhodora (1908, trained by James Allen), Pourparler (1964 Paddy Prendergast), Glad Rags (1966 Vincent O’Brien), Nocturnal Spree (1975 Stuart Murless), Las Meninas (1994 Tommy Stack), Virginia Waters (2005 Aidan O’Brien), Finsceal Beo (2007 Jim Bolger), Homecoming Queen (2012 Aidan O’Brien), Legatissimo (2015 David Wachman), Minding (2016 Aidan O’Brien), Winter (2017 Aidan O’Brien), Hermosa (2019 Aidan O’Brien), Love (2020 Aidan O’Brien) and Mother Earth (2021 Aidan O’Brien)
There have been 17 French-trained winners since 1900 -1929 Taj Mah (trained by Juan Torterolo), Kandy (1932 Frank Carter), Mesa (1935 Albert Swann), Imprudence (1947 Jacques Lieux),Camaree(1950AlexandreLieux),RoseRoyale(1957AlecHead),BellaPaola(1958Francois Mathet), Never Too Late (1960 Etienne Pollet), Hula Dancer (1963 Etienne Pollet), Flying Water (1976 Angel Penna), Ma Biche (1983 Criquette Head), Miesque (1987 Francois Boutin), Ravinella (1988 Criquette Head), Hatoof (1992 Criquette Head), Natagora (2008 Pascal Bary), Special Duty (2010 Criquette Head-Maarek) and Miss France (2014, Andre Fabre).
Robert Robson with nine winners – Corinne (1818), Catgut (1819), Rowena (1820), Zeal (1821), Whizgig (1822), Zinc (1823), Tontine (1825), Problem (1826) and Arab (1827)
Among current trainers, Aidan O’Brien is the most successful with seven winners - Virginia Waters (2005), Homecoming Queen (2012), Minding (2016), Winter (2017), Hermosa (2019), Love (2020) and Mother Earth (2021).
MOST SUCCESSFUL JOCKEY
George Fordham with seven winners - Mayonaise (1859), Nemesis (1861), Siberia (1865), Formosa (1868), Scottish Queen (1869), Thebais (1881), Hauteur (1883)
Frankie Dettori and Ryan Moore lead the way among current jockeys with four wins each. Dettori scored aboard Cape Verdi (1998), Kazzia (2002), Blue Bunting (2011) and Mother Earth (2021)
Moore was successful on Homecoming Queen (2012), Legatissimo (2015), Minding (2016) and Love (2020)
RECORD TIME
Ghanaati set a new record time for the 1000 Guineas in 2009, recording 1m 34.22s which was 0.72s faster than Finsceal Beo’s 1m 34.94s in 2007.
ROYAL WINNERS
Queen Elizabeth II owned the 1974 heroine Highclere while her father, King George VI, saw both Hypernicum (1946) and Sun Chariot (1942) carry his colours to victory King George V was victorious with Scuttle in 1928 and, way back in 1896, Thais triumphed for the Prince of Wales (later to become King Edward VII).
RACE DESCRIPTION: The first fillies’ Classic of the season, this one mile race for three-year-olds is also a Group 1 contest; the highest level of racing Group 1 races attract the very best horses from Britain and Ireland, occasionally from as far away as France, Australia, South Africa or the USA due to the prestige of these historic contests. Victory in a Classic race is the ultimate pinnacle for owners, trainers and jockeys and those fillies that are capable of racing competitively at this level often go on to have lucrative careers as broodmares later on.

PLAY SMARTER
It was hard not be taken by the way FALLEN ANGEL picked up again when joined in the closing stages of the Moyglare and, with 1m likely to suit on that evidence, she can improve again and provide the increasingly-powerful Karl Burke stable with a first British Classic success. French-raider Ramatuelle is second choice ahead of Dance Sequence, who should relish the step up to 1m, and Fillies’ Mile winner Ylang Ylang.

PLAY SMARTER
The newcomers are likely to dominate so the market should prove informative. Charlie Appleby saddles 3 well-bred newcomers with MOUNTAIN BREEZE the standout being a close relation to connections’ top-class 2-y-o Pinatubo Karl Burke won this 2 years ago with subsequent Royal Ascot winner Dramatised so the same connections’ River Seine is another likely type.

Stewards Note:
HOT FUSS: Following its run on 7/4/2024 it was reported that the horse was denied a clear run 2f out.
LOVE WARRIOR: Following its run on 13/4/2024 it was reported that the horse felt unbalanced throughout.
Probable S.P’s: 11-4 Cynosure (IRE), 9-2 Mai Dubai (IRE), 6-1 Black Run (FR), 13-2 Sea The Thunder (GB), 7-1 Hot Fuss (IRE), 9-1 Sun God (GB), 11-1 Love Warrior (IRE)
CYNOSURE is yet to run a bad race and his pedigree points to improvement now upped in trip, so he gets the nod over Mai Dubai, who should also make a better 3yo. Sea The Thunder and Black Run also have potential, so it could be a competitive event for the numbers.

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Newmarket Racecourses employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
