Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

Runswick Days won The Santander In Memory of Robert Forster Handicap Steeple Chase at Sedgefield on Tuesday 11th November 2014.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Raceday preview from Weatherbys

A field of 14 have been declared for racethreeonthecard, theJumpers ToFollowHandicapHurdle, a 0-110 contest, in which Prince Imperial heads the weights for trainer Milton Harris.Amaidenafterfivestartsover hurdles, he was a useful stayer on the Flat and given that he was able to win a Nottingham handicap off 93ayearago,heshouldbecapable of winning a hurdle race off 107.

Stepping back up in distance should suit Prince Imperial.

Donald McCain’s Jipekaa Machin is also rated 107, but receives a 2lbs age allowance and made a winning British debut at this track last November. He struggled in four subsequent starts, but remains lightly-raced.

Formerly trained by Mags Mullins in Ireland, Sean Og ran reasonably well at Kelso last month, when bumping into a potentially useful rivalintheshapeofIdemandought toappreciaterevertingtohandicap company. Yet to get his head in front, itwillbeinterestingtoseeifhe can take another step forward on just his third start for Dianne Sayer, who has saddled more winners at thistrackthananyother.

Sam England’s mare Spot On Soph and the Brian Ellison-trained Brian’sJethave been in consistent form of late, whilst Theirshegoes remains lightly-raced and actually ran behind Giovinco – the horse who features on the front cover of Jumpers To Follow 2023-2024 – at Carlisle in March. Sandy Thomson’s mare only faded on the run to the final flight at Newcastle in May and likelyhasplentymoretoofferinthis sortofcompany.

Micky Hammond’s Balkotic and PhilipKirby’sZwickyareanotherpair of course winners, but the former is better over much further and the latter might even find today’s test a little on the sharp side, having stayed on well to win over 2m5f here in late-January. In fairness, he knuckled down well to beat Basford (won three times since and now rated 115) and if this is strongly-run, itcouldsuithisstyleofracing.

Liberty Flame makes his debut for the Stuart Coltherd stable and is probably one to note in the market, whilst Aire Valley Lad ought to appreciate the better ground than he was running on for most of last season. Sue Smith’s horses often needtherunatthistimeoftheyear, however.
