Clarendon House will be popular in the Listed BetUK Hever Sprint Stakes (2.45) after shattering the 5f track record here in December.
He certainly commands respect, but that time was clocked in a strong tailwind and this is much tougher with Clive Cox’s classy All-Weather performer DILIGENT HARRY among his rivals.
The six-year-old, who has the distinction of winning two Finals Day titles, looked in great shape when dominating the Listed Kachy Stakes at Lingfield Park earlier this month. He drops back to the minimum distance here but the presence of several confirmed trailblazers could just set this up for him.
Globetrotting star LORD NORTH is difficult to oppose in the Group 3 BetUK Winter Derby (3.20). John and Thady Gosden’s multiple Group 1 winner bids to take the winter’s most prestigious race for the second year in a row. Clear top rated off a mark of 120, the son of Dubawi should not be inconvenienced by a different track, surface and distance in his preparation for a tilt at an unprecedented fourth consecutive Dubai Turf next month.
Despite his magnificent CV, the equine multi-millionaire competes without a penalty and can successfully overcome an 11-month absence from the track in the hands of stable jockey Robert Havlin.
Among Lord North’s leading challengers is Godolphin’s Military Order, who is entitled to sharpen up for his defeat in the Winter Derby Trial over course and distance but still has something to prove on the terms.
Listed Quebec Stakes winner Tyrrhenian Sea was no match for Lord North in last year’s renewal but Roger Varian’s likeable grey hasn’t progressed enough to suggest he can turn the tables.
Adding more intrigue to this stellar renewal is Eydon, who hasn’t been seen in action since finishing fourth in the 2022 Qipco 2000 Guineas and makes his debut for Andrew Balding. Not only does he have to overcome a near two-year absence but must also prove his stamina now stepping up in trip.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances)
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

It’s a proud day for Southwell Racecourse as we stage the winter Flat season’s most prestigious race, the £100,000 BetUK Winter Derby, for the first time.
The Group 3 showpiece, which will be run over an extra furlong due to the configuration of the track, has been won by some classy horses since Philip Mitchell’s Running Stag took the inaugural race under top jockey Ray Cochrane.
Held at Lingfield Park since its inception in 1998, the Winter Derby was still a conditions race when the son of Cozzene beat Refuse To Lose en route to a successful career in The States where he won two Grade 2’s and took his career earnings past £1 million
The following year the race was awarded Listed status when Peter Harris’s Supreme Sound obliged for Gary Bardwell, while Frankie Dettori, who has become the winning most jockey, took back-to-back renewals in 2003 and 2004 on David Loder’s Parasol and fellow Italian Luigi Camici’s Caluki.
It was another top jockey, Jamie Spencer, who became the first winner of the Winter Derby upon it being awarded Group 3 status in 2006. He scored on Sylvester Kirk’s Sri Diamond before the race began to attract even higher quality performers.
Tranquil Tiger made history in 2010 when he became the highest rated winner of the race at that stage off 112. The son of Selkirk justified favouritism under Tom Queally to give the late Sir Henry Cecil his only success in it
In 2014, the Winter Derby became the jewel in the crown of the inaugural AllWeather Championships as Robin Hood’s Bay gave owner Alan Pickering, trainer Ed Vaughan and a young Luke Morris the glory.
Godolphin claimed their only victory in the race in 2015 when Adam Kirby scored on Tryster for Charlie Appleby before following up a year later on Marco Botti’s popular Middle-Distance star Grendisar
John Gosden is the most successful trainer in its history. He’s won the race four times in the last five years with Wissahickon, Dubai Warrior, Forest Of Dean and, of course, Lord North Two of those successes were executed by Dettori but it was stable stalwart Robert Havlin who secured Lord North’s success 12 months ago off a record-high mark of 118.
The Winter Derby will be complemented by the Listed Hever Sprint Stakes, which also switches from Lingfield where it was first run in 2003
The five-furlong dash has strong links with Southwell’s resident trainer Scott Dixon, whose father Paul’s No Time won it 20 years ago for that man Dettori. In 2022, Scott trained One Night Stand to victory in the hands of Hollie Doyle, who also won the race in 2019 on Gorgeous Noora for Archie Watson.

SUMMARY
The one who appeals most is BARENBOIM, who did well to finish as close as he did at Lingfield last time given that he was done no favours by the steady gallop, This is likely to be a truly-run affair and the 6-y-o is 4lb below his last winning mark. Valsad went close at Newcastle recently and should be in the mix once more, while the unexposed Cello, the progressive Brunello Breeze, Artisan Dancer and Rhythmic Intent are others to consider in a very competitive contest

RACE SUMMARY
The vote goes to EAGLE DAY, who lost little caste in defeat when third off this mark over 9.5f at Wolverhampton recently and this drop back in trip looks a good move. Plastic Paddy has been knocking on the door of late and is second choice ahead of Star Zinc, who hit the target at Newcastle last weekend, and the hat-trick seeking Cusack
