THE BOULTON GROUP
SATURDAY 18 MARCH Official raceday programme | £3 .5
Welcome to The Boulton Group Midlands Grand National Raceday and a particularly huge welcome to our sponsors. 2023 is the 2nd year that The Boulton Group have sponsored Uttoxeter Racecourse’s premier Raceday and I would like to thank Carl Boulton and his team for their continued support
We have an impressive £287,000 of prizemoney up for grabs today across our 8 race card with the big race offering a £150,000 purse.
This year’s big race looks a competitive renewal, with Stan Sheppard riding ‘Iwilldoit’ heading the weights, which comes here in great form after winning the premier handicap at Warwick in January beating ‘Mr Incredible’ who has since gone on to finish third in the Kim Muir on Thursday at Cheltenham. Paul Nicholls runs the 2020 winner ‘Truckers Lodge’ and the 2021 winner ‘Time to Get Up’ reappears for Jonjo O’Neill. Both aiming to be the first horse to win this race twice!
We have some great entertainment planned for our racegoers today. ‘Back Chat Brass’ will be roaming the crowds prior to racing, and you can head over to the Rugby Marquee in the Centre Course where we will have live music from Irish band ‘Radio Murphy’ You can also enjoy the screening of the scheduled Six Nations matches on a giant screen within the marquee.
A huge congratulations go to Duncan and Katrina Goodfellow who are with us today celebrating their 15th wedding anniversary Everyone here at the track hopes you have a memorable day and thank you for choosing to celebrate it with us.
I do hope you enjoy your day, but can I ask that you are respectful to your fellow racegoers and our magnificent staff that have worked tirelessly over the past few weeks to ensure that we all have a fun, safe and enjoyable day.
Good luck!

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
ëëëëë Selected to win the race
ëëëëê Good chance of being placed
ëëëêê By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
ëëêêê Unlikely to win but not totally without hope
ëêêêê Can be given little or no chance
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances) The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

RACE SUMMARY
MYLESFROMWICKLOW was no match for a good prospect on his hurdling debut at Ffos Las, but he still beat the rest convincingly and this looks a good opportunity for him to go one better Blue Fin is improving with each run and is entitled to be competitive under a penalty, especially as he wasn’t beaten far by the promising Howlingmadmurdock at Catterick on his penultimate start. Butch and Can You Call also merit respect.

THE DAY OF ALL DAYS SINCE 1969
The race of all races the Boulton Group Midlands Grand National is back for another year and our showpiece event promises to be yet another moment to remember.
With a total pot of £287,000 on offer across the race card – an impressive £150,000 of which will be up for grabs in the feature race alone.
The race is run over four miles and two furlongs, making it the second longest race in the National Hunt calendar after the Aintree Grand National.
In 1969, winner Happy Spring was coming to the end of a fine career of which had seen him be one of only six horses ever to have beaten the legendary Arkle. Happy Spring and jockey Ken White galloped into the record books by becoming the first ever winner of the Midlands Grand National.
In the decades since, the winner’s circle has never welcomed the same horse twice with 49 different winners taking first prize. And there have been some distinguished victors along the way.
In 1975, Rag Trade, under the guidance of John Burke won the event and a year later put off Red Rum’s third victory in the Grand National by winning at Aintree.
In 1986 The Thinker stormed to victory and just over 12 months on joined racing’s elite by winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Just over a decade later in 1997, Seven Towers dashed hopes of racegoers celebrating a local victory as he defeated Lord Gyllene.
The second-placed horse was owned by Staffordshire businessman and self-made millionaire Sir Stanley Clarke and his wife Lady Hilda. Whilst the boss of St. Modwen Properties narrowly failed to taste victory at his local course of Uttoxeter in the Midlands Grand National, his New Zealand bred gelding gave Sir Stanley his racing high point by winning the Aintree Grand National three weeks later.
The victory of Lord Gyllene at Aintree is remembered as much for the circumstances surrounding the bomb threats and re-staging of the Grand National on the following Monday, as for his win itself
Then in 2010, racing royalty in the shape of legendary jockey AP McCoy and trainer Jonjo O’Neill enjoyed success with Synchronised. Once again, the horse showed success in the Midlands Grand National is a stamp of class as it went on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup two years later.
Between 2011 and 2014, trainer David Pipe, broke records winning the race four years in a row with Minella Four Star, Master Overseer, Big Occasion and Goulanes. Whilst in 2016 Fergal O’Brien’s much-loved Chase The Spud stormed to success in the final furlong.
2020 winner Trucker's Lodge and 2021 winner Time To Get Up are both declared to run this year, will either of them manage to win for a second time?

RACE SUMMARY
IWILLDOIT returned in some style when adding Warwick’s Classic Chase to his 2021 Welsh National success and this most progressive sort can defy an 8lb hike in the weights to make it 5-6 over fences. Guetapan Collonges (second choice) and French Paradoxe both arrive on the up too so could emerge as the chief threats if their stamina holds out, while former winners of this event Truckers Lodge and Time To Get Up could outrun their odds too now they have fallen in the weights.

RACE SUMMARY
The vote goes to KEY COMMANDER, who has acquitted himself well both starts for new connections and a similarly aggressive ride to that which he was given when third over 24.5f at Carlisle could pay dividends back down in trip here. Granted a clean round of jumping, Not Sure may well reverse January C&D placings with Tip Top Mountain on 6lb better terms and he is feared most. Marco Island was disappointing on his chase debut but is worth another chance given the strength of his hurdles form.
