KALAHARI KING (FR)

It may be unusual for a horse who never ran at Uttoxeter to have a race named in his honour, but KALAHARI KING has a close association as his owners are local and keen supporters of the Racecourse and their company, PEKTRON Ltd, sponsor again today in addition to being long-standing Box Holders

KALAHARI KING ran in the red and white quartered colours of his owner Julie Morgan and took his connections on the journey of a lifetime, becoming a regular sight at major festivals for over 5 years racing on English turf after his earlier days in France He made an immediate impact on the Jumps scene, running in 49 races, winning 12 and was placed in 14 He had career earnings of over £430,000

In his first season he won at Musselburgh before making the first of his 5 visits to the Cheltenham Festival, where he finished 4th in the Grade 1 Supreme Novices' Hurdle. He was placed in the Scottish Champion Hurdle and later won easily at the Punchestown Festival.

The following year he won three Novice Chase’s en route to Cheltenham for a tilt at the Arkle, where he finished second in a photo-finish. Later, at Aintree, he won the Grade 1 Maghull Novices' Chase in decisive style. He made three further trips to Cheltenham, finishing 3rd in the Queen Mother Champion Chase and the following year finishing 2nd in the Ryanair Chase.

He was retired in 2012, with his official handicap mark of 163, just below his career high of 166. He was a horse of a lifetime of Neil and Julie Morgan but after 12 happy years in retirement they were sad to say goodbye to him when he passed away this Spring

This year’s Kalahari King Chase is particularly poignant as it is the first running since his regular jockey, Graham Lee, (pictured on him above) suffered a career ending fall at Newcastle The Graham Lee Fundraising Ball takes place at York on Saturday 9th November

This s race is well-positioned as jump racing heads into its core season, despite a dryer than usual Autumn, and has featured in the development of some good Steeple Chasers in Le Prezien, Top Notch, Charbel, River Wylde and Hell's Kitchen. The 2024 running attracted a select but top quality entry however, many trainers are looking for slower ground LOOKAWAY – 2nd in both the Callow and Greatwood hurdle races – and PERSONAL AMBITION – winner of Kelso’s Premier Hurdle in March – should still deliver a fascinating contest in today’s ‘match’ race.

We thank PEKTRON for their support of the race from which a future star may develop.

There wasn’t a massive amount between LOOKAWAY and Personal Ambition as hurdlers and both possess the physique to excel over the larger obstacles this term. The former won his point and was notably slick over timber, which tilts the scales his way.

The market should reveal plenty but it’s hard to ignore the claims of STAR WALKING who followed up her Irish points success with a stylish winning bumper debut at Fakenham and can now follow suit going hurdling. Fellow newcomer Railway Bell also comes here on the back of a bumper victory and is feared most, although fellow debutantes Kenmya, Reel Rosie and Jessie Jump Jet need factoring in too.

Race preview from Weatherbys

It is an absolute pleasure to be sponsoringthePaulFergusonJumpers ToFollowHandicapHurdle at Uttoxeter this afternoon, a Class 4 event staged overtwo-and-a-halfmiles.

Improving seven-year-old Hawaii Du Mestivel is likely to be popular for the in-form Neil Mulholland yard as he chases the hattrick here. The No Risk At All gelding shed his maiden tag in emphatic style at Ffos Las in August before backing that up with another comfortable success at Bangor last time under a penalty. He won that with plenty in hand and this unexposed typeshouldgoonimproving, forallthis requiresmoreupafurther14lbsforthat latestsuccess.

Top-weight Icare Allen was a Grade 3 winner as a juvenile.

The James Owen stable continues in red-hot form and Honneur d’Ajonc arrives here on the back of a victory at Fontwell – his first over the smaller obstaclessince2022.Hehasbeenraised 6lbforthateffortbuthaswonpreviously frommarksinthe120sandlookedright back to form last time. The step up in trip should pose no issue and he is a major player with ground conditions in

his favour. The reopposing Norley was wellbehindthatrivalatFontwellbutwas returning from almost a year layoff, so shouldstripfitterforthatouting.

Top-weight Icare Allen was a Grade 3 winner as a juvenile when with Willie Mullins and pitches up here from an ever-sliding mark. The six-year-old has shown little since switching to Jonjo & A J O’Neill but is dangerous to rule out from a tempting mark of just 117. Kay Tara Tara makes her stable debut for Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero here on the back of a break. The six-yearold mare won on both bumper and hurdlesdebut, soclearlygoeswellwhen fresh. Chankaya is another making their stable debut, having moved to Tim Vaughan. The seven-year-old was impressive when winning at Taunton when last seen but that was back in February, and he could need the run here.

The Five-year-old maiden Call To Duty remains a maiden but Emma Lavelle’s gelding holds potential now handicappingfromanopeningmarkof 106,whilstHorsesomeharryalsomakes his handicap debut up in trip following three lowkey runs in the Spring. Nigel Twiston-Davies’ Tommie Gun was a faller on chase debut last month and this maiden hurdle winner reverts back tothesmallerobstaclesfromareduced markof110.
