E VE N I N G RAC I N G M O N 16 M AY Official Raceday Programme & Form Guide | £3
WELCOME Dear All,
Welcome to the second Monday evening meeting of the month at Royal Windsor Racecourse. For the second week running we have a classy Listed event as the centrepiece of the racing; on this occasion the Weatherbys Bloodstock Pro Stakes over six furlongs. Last year’s winner Dream of Dreams, trained by Sir Michael Stoute and ridden by Ryan Moore, was retired only last week, but there’s another high-class entry in his absence, with Tabdeed (Hollie Doyle) and Run To Freedom (David Probert) among the likely favourites. We also stage the second qualifier in the Fitzdares Windsor Sprint series, which eventually leads to a valuable final in August. Hollie Doyle was an early booking for Majeski Man, who looks sure to run well, but several in-form speedsters should result in an exciting finish with plenty of them involved in the final furlong. We continue to race every Monday evening in May, with Gin and Acoustic Race Night on 30 May an early highlight of our summer programme. This is the perfect excuse to combine delicious food and refreshing gin cocktails from our specialist bars. Additionally, live music on the lawn from local bands will add to the lively atmosphere and banish those Monday blues! We can offer arrival at the racecourse by river boat from Windsor Town Centre or a “Let the Celebration Be-gin” ticket combining admission and a gin cocktail. There are also special meal deals available, including your own table in the panoramic 1866 Restaurant and the brand-new Barbeque Experience near the parade ring. Full information for future dates can be found on our website windsor-racecourse.co.uk but in the meantime I hope you have a most enjoyable evening at our scenic racecourse on the banks of the River Thames.
Best Wishes, Liam Johnson Executive Director

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
ABBREVIATIONS BF - Beaten Favourite C - Course winner D - Distance winner CD - Course & Distance winner
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent orm under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE SUMMARY Last years’ leading UK Arabian trainer and jockey looked to have a strong chance to continue in the same vein this term with AWTAAR, who should make her experience tell, dropped in grade. Was only beaten half a length on her sole attempt at this trip on good, but if the going eased, it may play to the strengths of Rebal Athbah on his UK debut. However it’s hard to assess the value of that overseas win and the stable will have bigger targets in mind for later. Soft ground wouldn’t suit Zayin Zyperion or Bin Al Reeh either, and this looks a more competitive affair than the one Bin Al Reeh lost his maiden in last season.

WINNERS OF THE LEISURE STAKES
Switched from Lingfield to Windsor in 2001, the Listed Leisure Stakes has been won by some high-class sprinters in recent years, with Bated Breath successful as a four-year-old in 2011. Beaten a nose in the Sprint Cup at Haydock less than four months later, he returned to Merseyside to land the Group 2 Temple Stakes the following May. More recently, this race has twice produced a dual-winner. The Tin Man was first successful in 2016, on his first start at four, and would return two years later to regain his crown. In the interim, he had won a brace of Group 1s at Ascot – the 2016 Qipco British Champion Stakes and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at the 2017 Royal meeting – and would land a third-and-final top-level prize, when successful in the 2018 Sprint Cup at Haydock. James Fanshawe’s son of Equiano – himself a high-class sprinter for former trainer Barry Hills – didn’t win again, but finished third in the 2019 renewal of this race, when the baton was handed to the Sir Michael Stoutetrained Dream Of Dreams. A son of the strapping Dream Ahead – who, coincidentally, beat the aforementioned Bated Breath by just ½-a-length in the 2011 renewal of the Darley July Cup – he was trained by Kevin Ryan during his two-yearold and (part of) his three-year-old seasons, winning just once from seven starts. Moved South to join Stoute’s Freemason Lodge, he struck twice – latterly in Listed company – during the second half of that three-year-old campaign. Having endured a rather frustrating season at four – when he failed to win in eight starts, but did finish second or third on four occasions – it was as a five-year-old that he really began to flourish. Having won a conditions event at Chelmsford on his reappearance, he won his first Leisure Stakes under Ryan Moore, beating Glorious Journey
by a length, with The Tin Man a further length away in third. Beaten just a head in the Diamond Jubliee at Royal Ascot on his very next start, he failed to win again at five, but following a gelding operation, was again only narrowly denied in the 2020 Diamond Jubilee (beaten a head on this occasion), before winning Newbury’s Group 2 Hungerford Stakes over seven furlongs and landing that elusive first Group 1, when staying-on strongly to win Haydock’s Sprint Cup. He returned to Windsor last May to land a second renewal of this race (the 2020 renewal was lost, due to the Covid-19 outbreak), beating just two rivals and justifying cramped odds. That again put him spot-on for the Royal meeting, where – at the third time of asking and, perhaps crucially, on his favoured soft ground – he finally landed the Diamond Jubilee. Lame after that victory, we didn’t get to see Dream Of Dreams in action again last season and only last week, his retirement was announced, after the eight-year-old had failed to recover from an old ankle injury. Whilst he won’t be back at Windsor in a bid to complete the hat-trick, his career should very much be remembered fondly and this race played a huge part in that illustrious career. Dream Of Dreams made his racecourse debut for Prostock Ltd, before being purchased privately by leading owner Saeed Suhail, whose distinctive blue and yellow silks were carried to victory in the 2003 Derby by Kris Kin.
ROPEY GUEST Eight horses go to post for this year’s Leisure Stakes and although the last four-year-old winner of the race was The Tin Man back in 2016, this race often goes the way of an improving young sprinter, with seven horses of that age group successful since 2006. Run To Freedom is one of a quartet of four-year-olds to take their chance this year and Henry Candy’s Muhaarar colt made an encouraging return to action in last month’s Group 3 Abernant Stakes at Newmarket. Slowly away, he kept on really well in the closing stages and having progressed in handicaps at three – in races over both 6f and 7f – he looks more than capable of making his presence felt at Listed level. Candy is adept at handling a high-class sprinter – with the likes of Kyllachy, Airwave and Limato springing to mind – and he took this race 2012 with Markab. Chocoya finished fourth in the Boadicea Stakes last October and didn’t thoroughly see out the 7f trip on her reappearance at Lingfield. She was caught on the wide outside on that occasion, but with that recent run under her belt, Hugo Palmer’s filly can be expected to step forward. She won twice during September of last year and is another who is proven on a relatively sound surface. James Ferguson’s Dark Angel gelding First Folio is another who was caught wide on reappearance, but did travel noticeably well down the centre of the track at Newmarket’s Guineas’ fixture. The grey eventually finished fifth behind Blackrod, a horse who he had beaten when winning a 6f handicap at York on good-to-firm ground last June. That was a handicap victory off a mark of 90, but after just a dozen runs, he is another who remains open to plenty of improvement. Ropey Guest drops in trip, having raced just once over 6f since October 2020, although he appreciates a little ease underfoot, whilst the Hollie Doyle-ridden Tabdeed makes his second appearance for Archie Watson. He faded at Kempton
last month, looking as though he would improve for the outing from a fitness perspective. His last victory came in the 2020 Group 3 Hackwood Stakes at Newbury and if able to reproduce that kind of form, the seven-year-old would warrant utmost respect. The other seven-year-old in the field is Atlanta’s Boy, who wears his customary hood. Another who is having his second start of the campaign, David Menuisier’s son of Paco Boy won a brace of Goodwood handicaps last season and reappeared at the same track last month. Only eighth of 10 on that occasion, he will appreciate stepping back up in distance, but is another, who – on official ratings – needs to take a step forward. A positive is the likely ground, with last year’s two victories being recorded on good-to-firm. Mo Celita made giant strides for Adrian Nicholls last year, winning her first five starts for the North Yorkshire-based trainer. A quick-fire hat-trick in selling contests was followed by a brace of Haydock handicap wins and after a couple of reversals, the daughter of Camacho won a Listed contest in France. Five of those six wins came over this 6f trip, but perhaps more crucially, five of them also came on ground described as good-to-soft or worse. The Karl Burke-trained Lord of The Lodge completes the line-up and the fiveyear-old has been busy throughout the winter, both domestically (all-weather) and over in Meydan, where he contested the Group 3 Nad al Sheba Turf Sprint. He shaped quite well on his return to the UK, when fourth at Newcastle, and since dropping back to 6f he has performed consistently well. Twice a winner of this trip, on good-tofirm ground as a two-year-old, he certainly isn’t without a chance and represents an inform yard, with Burke fresh from saddling a treble at York on Friday.
