WELCOME

Following last Monday’s first qualifier in the 2024 Fitzdares Sprint Series, it’s already time for the second, this time over the minimum distance of five furlongs, with all roads leading to the hotly contested final in August However, this is far from being a one-race programme!

Preceding the Fitzdares race is another sprint, a slightly longer one at six furlongs, but equally competitive, with a number of old favourites in the line-up. Offering a first prize of nearly £10,000 to the winner, we can expect plenty of the runners to be in contention on the run to the winning line

On a quality programme, there are also two valuable maidens (one restricted to fillies), both with more than £20,000 to the winner. With a number of top stables represented, some potentially high-class runners are likely be involved, and we look forward to following their progress for the rest of the season.

Next weekend we switch to Saturday for an evening fixture which we are calling the Summer Opening Party, with BBC Radio 2 DJ Vernon Kay providing the music after racing. The action on the track starts at 5.35pm, with gates opening two hours earlier, and you can secure your place, along with many attractive catering options, at www.windsor-racecourse.co.uk

As we head into June, we will again remind you that Royal Windsor is indeed the Home of Monday Night Racing, with a variety of themes featuring live music: ‘80s Racenight (3 June); Irish Night (10 June); Summer Garden Party (17 June) and the inaugural Royal After Party (24 June). By then the summer of 2024 will be in full swing

Booking information for all future meetings is available online, and we hope you will be able to return soon for another visit In the meantime, we invite you to enjoy an outstanding evening of racing and, with enough luck on your side, the horses that you have chosen should reach the winning post ahead of all the others!

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

D - Distance winner

CD - Course & Distance winner

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

LONGEST TRAVELLER: FREDS MATE trained by C Johnston, Middleham, 238 miles.

This looks a fair 3-y-o handicap for the grade but it’s still hard to escape the claims of CAPRELO, who was much improved when successful at Kempton a month ago and his revised mark looks lenient. Lucentio landed a C&D handicap a fortnight ago so commands respect, with Malinka a likely improver tackling a more suitable trip

This looks pretty trappy and the suggestion is MANY A STAR, who was in good order prior to a below-par effort at Goodwood last time and the return to better ground and slight ease in class are positive factors where he is concerned TheThames Boatman has yet to strike on turf but he is likely to put that right before long judged on 2023 exploits and he arrives here on the back of a creditable effort at Chelmsford. He is second choice ahead of Amazonian Dream and Big R.

WEIGHTWATCHER: ESTEHWADH won off a handicap mark of 60, his rating is now down 10lb to 50.

LONGEST TRAVELLER: MUJID trained by J Tickle, Tiverton, 151 miles.

Oisin Murphy has a very healthy strike-rate for the Hughie Morrison stable so a chance is taken on CURTIZ bouncing back to form having returned to the mark he defied on AW in January. Recent Brighton scorer The Conqueror is next on the list ahead of the returning Caramay.
