Veterinary Care

Horse welfare is a priority at Wolverhampton. At every meeting there are two specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle. Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys. The second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

Star Ratings Explained

Each horse is given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race HHHHI Good chance of being placed HHHII By no means without a chance

HHIII At least one or two hold stronger claims HIIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope IIIII Can be given little or no chance

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE SUMMARY A case can be made for a few of these but the most persuasive one is for HOT DIGGITY DOG who arrives on the back of an excellent second here and is weighted to go one better now. Dusky Prince didn’t enjoy the rub of the green at Newcastle last time so is feared most, with Fair And Square appealing as the pick of the remainder for place purposes. 1-2-3: 1.HOT DIGGITY DOG (IRE) 2.DUSKY PRINCE (IRE) 3.FAIR AND SQUARE KEY colours

BASE NOTE did the job well when making a winning handicap debut at Lingfield and, with neither this step up in trip nor the 7lb rise he incurred unlikely to pose too much of a problem, further success awaits here. Ask Peter was beaten 5 lengths by the selection at Lingfield and a bigger threat is likely to be posed by Last Ammo, who has below par at Southwell last time but is in good hands. 1-2-3: 1.BASE NOTE 2.LAST AMMO (IRE) 3.ASK PETER (FR) KEY colours

Weights, Pedigrees, Trainers’ Names, Descriptions, Performances and Values of races have been added for the convenience of the Public, but are subject to alteration. All horses must parade in the Parade Ring except by permission of the Stewards, but in all cases must pass through the Ring on the way to the Post.

VETERINARY CARE Horse welfare is a priority at Wolverhampton. 27

Most of these are out of form, but MILLION REASONS is the glaring exception on the back of his victories over 6f at Lingfield and Newcastle.
