Star Ratings Explained
Each horse is given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race HHHHI Good chance of being placed HHHII By no means without a chance
HHIII At least one or two hold stronger claims HIIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope IIIII Can be given little or no chance
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

ENGLISH SPIRIT remains a maiden following a dozen attempts, but he was arguably unlucky not to have put that right at Lingfield last week and the 4-y-o is taken to gain a deserved first success off the same mark here. Next on the list is Pope Gregory, who landed a C&D selling handicap last month prior to going close in an amateur riders’ event at Salisbury. Pink Jazz is interesting on debut for new yard off a lowly mark and his stablemate Power On also enters calculations.

LONGEST TRAVELLER: SMART BOYO trained by Mrs P Kirby, Richmond, 154 miles. RACE SUMMARY
Though TULANE was below par in the Kempton handicap won by Smart Boyo last time, he will have every chance if able to reproduce the form of his breakthrough success there in January. Richard Phillips’ charge had Frame Rate back in third on that occasion, yet meets that rival on better terms here. Frame Rate should give another good account all the same, but Ghostly is feared most having returned to form when going close here 10 days ago.

EL BELLO has been raised 8lb for his Newcastle success in March, but he did the job in good style that day and further progress is a distinct possibility. Marco Botti’s charge is taken to complete the hat-trick, perhaps at the chief expense of Galileo Glass, who was just touched off at Windsor last month and there were excuses at Ripon subsequently. Handicap-debutante Quick Change and Giewont are others to consider.

ASRAABB wasn’t given a hard time when fifth on debut at Lingfield last month and she is likely to prove a different proposition here with that experience to draw upon. The Dark Angel filly gets the nod ahead of Tango Tonight, who stepped up on her 2-y-o form when chasing home a promising type over this C&D on her recent reappearance. Newcomer Fine Balance is a likely type and she needs close attention in the betting. 1-2-3: 1.ASRAABB (IRE) 2.TANGO TONIGHT 3.FINE BALANCE (IRE) KEY colours

GREAT BRITISH BONUS SCHEME The Great British Bonus (GBB) offers multiple bonuses of up to £20,000 per eligible race for British-bred fillies and mares.
VETERINARY CARE Horse welfare is a priority at Wolverhampton. At every meeting there are two specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle. Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys. The second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

LONGEST TRAVELLER: ANOTHER ANGEL trained by A Brittain, Warthill, 138 miles. RACE SUMMARY Preference is for STARTER FOR TEN, who doesn’t appear to have been dealt a bad hand having gone up 5lb for this Kempton success when last seen in December. Steelriver is tempting given that he has slipped to a very handy mark, but he needs to bounce back and bigger threats may be posed by Bomb Squad and Martineo. 1-2-3: 1.STARTER FOR TEN 2.BOMB SQUAD (IRE) 3.MARTINEO KEY colours
