KEY Owner Breeding Breeder Jockey Trainer Sponsor Star Ratings Explained

Each horse is given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed

By no means without a chance

HHIII At least one or two hold stronger claims HIIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope IIIII Can be given little or no chance

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating

From a handicapping standpoint SICARIO is very interesting indeed on debut for Michael Appleby, who is a past master when it comes to getting the best out of recruits from other yards. The 7-y-o was runner-up over hurdles on his final start for Mark McNiff in Ireland and is now 15lb below the mark off which he gained his most recent success on the Flat Eddie The Beagle and True Romance rate the main dangers

A mere reproduction of that effort would make this colt hard to beat. In the hope that the fitting of cheekpieces have the desired effect, HACHERT gets the nod The 5-y-o went close twice off higher marks than this during the spring and he wasn’t seen to best effect when tried in a visor at Southwell last time. Crystal Dawn is feared most on the back of her recent Chelmsford success, for which a 3lb rise looks fair, and Adatorio is also feared having slipped to an attractive mark.

At every meeting there are two specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all the horses in action One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys. The second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy.
