John Burke John Burke became in 1976 just the fifth jockey in history to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Grand National in the same year, on Royal Frolic and Rag Trade respectively. Burke was born in 1953. A natural horseman, he started to ride in point-to-points and as an amateur rider under rules with so much success that in 1974 he turned professional. Almost immediately he became stable jockey to the champion trainer Fred Rimell. The first of John’s 196 winners was Some Man at Ludlow in 1973, and followed it up with some outstanding rides, including a victory on Andy Pandy in the Whitbread Gold Cup in 1976. In 1977, Burke was also lucky enough to partner the great Rimell hurdler Comedy of Errors to win the first of two consecutive National Spirit Hurdles at Fontwell. The following year he won the Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival on Connaught Ranger. In the film Champions (1983), the story of Aldaniti and Bob Champion’s heroic victory in the National, Burke rode Aldaniti in the jumping scenes. He retired in 1985. Here at Worcester, we are delighted to hold this annual race in his name on behalf of his Family and Friends, and look forward to continuing the annual celebration of the life of a great jump jockey for many more years with the John Burke Memorial Handicap Steeple Chase.

RACE STATS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): Fergal O’Brien (25 wins from 138 runners, 18%) runs CORAL TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): Fergal O’Brien (5 wins from 26 runners, 19%) runs CORAL WEIGHTWATCHER: ISAAC WONDER won off a handicap mark of 119, his rating is now down 9lb to 110. LONGEST TRAVELLER: DOLLY DANCER trained by M Barnes, Brampton, 203 miles. RACE SUMMARY DE BARLEY BASKET is very much an improving chaser and Ben Pauling’s nine-year-old is fancied to notch his fifth win in 7 starts over fences. He faces a formidable rival in the shape of 4-timer seeking Lord Bryan and he poses the biggest threat, with Dolly Dancer also capable of filling a place. 1-2-3: 1.DE BARLEY BASKET (IRE) 2.LORD BRYAN (IRE) 3.DOLLY DANCER (IRE) KEY colours

HORSE WELFARE It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected whilst a diagnosis of the injury is made by one of the three veterinary surgeons deployed around the course. The screens are designed to afford privacy during this diagnosis. Please do not always assume the worse, and at all times the horse’s welfare is our paramount concern.

11-8

Paddy Brennan Milton Harris, Warminster bresbet ltd

TIMEFORM VIEWRemains 3lb above last winning mark and while he hasn’t disgraced himself in three starts since returning from a break in April, there’s an air of vulnerability about him. Tried in blinkers last time and cheekpieces back on here. TFRHHIII BHA93

GOLD LEADER (GB) (25) 0/4P-521 D

B m Gold Well - Present Leader Miss Sarah A. Dawson Jeremy MacTaggart

11-6

Lilly Pinchin (3) D. J. Jeffreys, Hinton-On-The-Green Nationwide Vehicle Contracts Ltd

TIMEFORM VIEW Left previous form behind when bolting up at Uttoxeter (23.3f, good to soft) last month. 9lb rise means that another personal best is needed, but she may well be equal to the task. TFRHHHHH BHA91

Jonathan Burke David Dennis, Banbury DD Racing Ltd

TIMEFORM VIEW Showed ability on the second of his three qualifying runs, but little impact switched to handicaps the last twice and it’s best to look elsewhere. TFRHIIII BHA91

Brian Hughes Charlie Longsdon, Chipping Norton Merribelle Stable Llc

TIMEFORM VIEWPoint winner who has hit the crossbar a couple of times in this sphere. No show in a couple of runs over fences since returning from a seven-month break, but returns to hurdles on an attractive mark and sports a first-time tongue strap. TFRHHIII BHA91

James Davies Nikki Evans, Abergavenny Hgv Drivers UK, Radnor Hills

TIMEFORM VIEW Showed some ability in a pair of Irish maiden hurdles for Miss Elizabeth Doyle in March 2021. However, her two efforts for this yard (12 months apart) have not been overly inspiring. TFRHIIII BHA91

Tom O’Brien Clare Ellam, Market Drayton

TIMEFORM VIEWLooked limited in Ireland, but positive start for new yard when runner-up at Uttoxeter (23.3f) last month. Still in the mix when exiting at the third-last over the same C&D (race won by Gold Leader) since and she’s an each-way player. TFRHHHII BHA90

B g Thewayyouare (USA) - Labrusca Mr Greenfingers Syndicate Barronstown Stud and Cobra

10 11-4

Adam Wedge L J Morgan, Waltham On The Wolds

TIMEFORM VIEW Capitalised on a much reduced mark when seeing off 17 rivals at Exeter in a first-time visor in April. Clear of the rest when runner-up at Sedgefield (27f, good) next time and he merits respect on debut for new yard. TFRHHHII BHA89

B g Helmet (AUS) - Secret Flame Mr Keith Jones Val & Angela Leeson

11-4

Lewis Stones (5) Michael Mullineaux, Tarporley Tote

TIMEFORM VIEWPosted best effort for some time when taking a six-runner Southwell handicap (24.3f) in May. Put in another good shift when runner-up over the same C&D a fortnight ago and likely to be on the premises once again. TFRHHHII BHA89

B g Oscar (IRE) - Montys Miss (IRE) Jokulhlaup Syndicate J. Mangan

10 11-4

Page Fuller Andy Irvine, East Grinstead Global Herbs Ltd

TIMEFORM VIEW Seemingly benefited from the return to hurdles with usual headgear omitted when third of eight over this C&D last time. Down another 2lb and he will be a danger to all if able to build on that effort. TFRHHHII BHA89

Mr Toby Wynne (7) Oliver Greenall & Josh Guerrie, Malpas Swansway, Smartplanner

TIMEFORM VIEWImproved when opening her account at Southwell (20.4f) in April and probably would’ve won again at Ludlow next time but for hanging. Looked booked for third when falling at the last back at Southwell last time and she merits respect. TFRHHHHI BHA82

TIMEFORM VIEW Hurdles winner at Wetherby in January 2020, but more miss than hit since, both in this sphere and over fences, and she’s opposable. TFRHIIII BHA80
