This a lot harder but still the one to beat. TFRHHHHI BHA135 Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

Local trainer John Spearing saddles Pillar Of Steel, who finished 1¼ lengths behind Bannister (4th July) and is now 3lbs better off at the weights. Twice a winner over course-and-distance, he was only narrowly denied here on his penultimate start and is likely to put up another bold show. The weights are headed by recent Summer Hurdle winner Pisgah Pike, who is now 6lbs higher than when successful in the Market Rasen feature. He battled on tenaciously to land that Class 2 contest and has twice won over fences at this track. He is the class angle of the race Hurricane Ali, who finished eighth in the Summer Hurdle, and the evergreen 11-year-old Glimpse Of Gold complete the sextet.

Weatherbys are proud to sponsor the two most valuable races on today’s seven-race card, with the opening contest a 2m7f novices’ chase the first in a series to be run under the Jumpers To Follow banner. The 16th edition of the publication will be out in three weeks’ time and with the exception of a much needed recent holiday, I have been buried away in my office putting it together for the past few months. Therefore, I’m delighted to be on course this afternoon to hand out the prize, on what will be my first visit to a racecourse since Aintree on 10th June I must admit, it is slightly disappointing that only two horses take their chance, with The Vollan taking on Imperial Knight. The former is very experienced, having had no fewer than 36 starts under Rules. Laura Morgan’s eight-year-old has won three of his nine starts over fences and arrives here on a hat-trick, following handicap wins at Southwell. He is a strong stayer and acts well on good ground. Despite being two years older, this is just the second chase start for Imperial Knight, who was a wide-margin winner of a novices’ hurdle at this track last September. On official BHA Ratings, the weights favour Ben Pauling’s runner, provided he takes to the larger obstacles on this second attempt (unseated his rider on debut at Chepstow in December 2019). Later on the card, six go to post for the Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Handicap Hurdle, a race which was won last year by the Tom Georgetrained Champagne City. George is represented this time by courseand-distance winner Bannister The five-year-old showed a fine attitude to win here early last month and went close off a 5lbs higher mark just 33 days ago He remains at the right end of the handicap to continue his progression.

WEATHERBYS RACE PREVIEWS

Elsewhere on the card, Letterston Lady could make the most of the weight she receives from her rivals in the mares’ bumper Peter Bowen’s filly twice ran well in defeat during the spring, showing more than enough to suggest that she can win a race of this nature. The penalised Carrigeen Kampala sets the standard, but carries a 7lbs penalty for her Newton Abbot success

As always, enjoy the racing and good luck, Paul Ferguson

It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected whilst a diagnosis of the injury is made by one of the three veterinary surgeons deployed around the course. The screens are designed to afford privacy during this diagnosis. Please do not always assume the worse, and at all times the horse’s welfare is our paramount concern.
