Season Finale Day has arrived!

We have yet another jam-packed race card for you all to enjoy this Thursday afternoon, following a total of 86 horses declared. As a result of this, we now run 8 races on good to soft ground, with the Maiden Hurdle dividing

The Season Finale is a fixture which evokes many different feelings. Whilst many are sad that the seasons fun has come to an end, we are also grateful for the memories which have come from what has been a fantastic Summer of jump racing.

As the curtain comes down here at Worcester Racecourse, I would like to wish everybody a very relaxed and enjoyable afternoon and I personally would also like to thank, not only the team for all their hard work and efforts, but also you as loyal customers, supporting this course.

The thundering of hooves, the roar of the crowd, the electric atmosphere will certainly be missed. But not for long as we are back racing on Monday 8th May. Our full fixture list for 2023 is out now, so get planning for what is going to be a very exciting year Visit our website for full details (www.worcester-racecourse.co.uk).

Together with the 2 long-standing memorial races, we also have the presentation of the Frequent Runner Championship so do make your way down to the parade ring and winners enclosure to catch a view of the fabulous trophies and see which trainer takes the 2022 Championship!

Our sponsors mean a lot to Worcester Racecourse so I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you all who are here today for your generous support. We do hope your day is filled with fun on this thrilling season finale.

Finally, congratulations to all winning owners, trainers, jockeys and horses during this 2022 for all your incredible achievements and we hope we can see you all back on the start line soon.

At 1.35pm this afternoon Worcester Racecourse recognises the trainingachievementsofFredandMercyRimell.Fredwascrowned Champion National Hunt Trainer on five occasions spanning 25 years from his first title in 1951 to his fifth in 1976.

Amongst his many highlights as a trainer were his four winners of the GrandNational,namelyRagTradein1976,GayTripin1970,NicolausSilver in 1961 and E S B in 1956 who benefited from Devon Loch’s inexplicable collapse on the run-in. Moreover, an unprecedented fifth success looked likely when Andy Pandy led the field a merry dance in Red Rum’s historic third win in 1977, only for him to become another victim of Becher’s Brook on the second circuit when clear of the field. Andy Pandy was to bounce back at Sandown Park a few weeks later giving Fred his only success in the Whitbread Gold Cup.

Winners at the Cheltenham Festival were commonplace for Fred and two victories in the Gold Cup with Woodland Venture in 1967 and Royal Frolic nine years later confirmed his place amongst the greats of National Hunt trainers. As well as the Gold Cup, the other two major races at the Festival have also headed his way with Comedy Of Errors winning the Champion Hurdle in 1973 and then regaining his title two years later and Another Dolly who was awarded the Champion Chase in 1980. Another major training feat was to saddle three winners of the fiercely competitive Triumph Hurdle between 1969 and 1978.

In wasn’t just with staying chasers that Fred could weave his magic as his Mackeson Gold Cup record proves, having prepared the winner on four occasions. Remarkably those victories followed in consecutive years form 1968 to 1971 with Gay Trip taking home the prize on two of those occasions inbetween his Grand National victory in 1970. Indeed it was Gay Trip’s Aintree success that started off a plethora of two-and-a half mile chasers attempting to win the Grand National and as not one of them has succeeded in the following 29 years, it puts into perspective that training feat.

Gaye Brief was another Championship winner for the Rimell team when Fred’s wife, Mercy, who took over her husband’s licence following his passing prepared him to power away with the 1983 Champion Hurdle.

Fittingly the quality of the winners adorning the Roll of Honour for the Fred Rimell Memorial Chase is worthy of the great trainer’s name. Recent winners of this race include the 1999 Queen Mother Champion Chase winner, Call Equiname, the 1993 King George VI Chase winner, Barton Bank, the 1998 Tripleprint Gold Cup winner, Northern Starlight and the Grade I Feltham Novices’ Chase winner of 1994, See More Indians.
