A very warm welcome to Worcester Racecourse this Tuesday Afternoon.

We are set, once again for a very good day of Summer Jumps Racing with a total of £46,100 prize money up to win across all races. Good luck to all runners and riders this afternoon.

Although the heatwave was very nice to have around, we are pleased to have a break in the weather with cooler temperatures. Our hardworking grounds team will certainly welcome the rain! The work which goes into getting this track back to such a great standard you see today is enormous and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the team; particularly during these heatwaves and busy months, for your top efforts. I am sure you will agree, they continue to do a tremendous job.

A very special welcome to our long serving sponsors and supporters of Worcester Racecourse today, Vickers Bet, PJ Nicholls, FBC Mamby Bowdler, Anja Potze and Richard Newland Racing. We also welcome back Paul Ferguson who writes a fantastic and well-established book each year some of you may know already. ‘Jumpers To Follow’ is a great pre-season read so grab a copy for the 2023/2024 season once it is published on Monday 18th September. It is available at www.weatherbysshop.co.uk

Sponsorship is a great way to promote your business or even celebrate a special occasion, whilst getting up close to the horses. There is a large range of benefits to sponsoring so if you are looking to make your day with us extra memorable, then please drop us an email at info@ worcester-racecourse.co.uk where we can provide you with more details.

Although this may seem very early to some, we have just over 3 months to go until Christmas. Here at Worcester Racecourse we are holding 4 shared Christmas parties, which are all nearly sold out. If you are looking to book somewhere to celebrate, take a look within this racecard for more details, but please do get booking quick to ensure you are not disappointed.

Our next feature day is at the end of this month, Friday 29th September which is our Fixed Brush Series Final fixture where all the top horses of the series come and race to take the £70,000 prize. We still have tables in our restaurant and hospitality available, so if you wish to make your day extra special, please call the office on 01905 25364.

Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Raceday preview from Weatherbys

The second race on today’s card is the first Weatherbys-sponsored contest of the seasontousetheJumpersToFollowhandle andwiththe17theditionsettobepublished onMonday, itisgoodtoseeacompetitive, seven-strongfieldassemble.

The weights are headed by Vinnie The Hoddie for this 0-110 novices’ handicap chase and Gail Haywood’s seven-year-old has been dropped another 3lbs, following a lengthy defeat at Bangor-on-Dee last month. Going back up in trip should help, but the nine-year-old doesn’t look the sameforceaswhenreachingamarkof130, somethreeyearsago.

Peter Bowen has enjoyed a good summer andIronHeart–ownedbyonesonMickey and ridden by another, Sean – makes his debut for the stable this afternoon. This is also his first start over fences, having won a selling hurdle in game fashion for David Pipe, on his last start under National Hunt rules.

Mix Of Clover and Glajou are the two course winners in the line-up and the former is very much of interest, following an encouraging return to fences at Stratford recently. Quicker ground and the longer trip should suit, plus he remains relatively unexposed as a chaser, having had just the six starts over fences.

CollegeOakhails from the in-form yard of JamieSnowden, withtheLambournhandler having saddled four winners from his last six runners, including a double at Stratford on Saturday. He was already beaten when hampered two out at this track on 1st August, but that was a hurdle race and his firststartin344days,sotherunmightwell havebeenneeded.

The eight-year-old is 0-3 over fences, but isfully18lbslowerthanwhenfirstrunningin achase(October2021)andhewasagood groundwinner–offa6lbshighermarkthan today’sofficialratingof100–overhurdlesat Stratfordlastsummer.Giventheformofhis stable, he should not be underestimated, with that recent run likely to have brought himforward.

Bari Breeze and Shot Tower complete the septet, with the former representing Milton Harris and Harry Cobden. The Wiltshirebased trainer has provided the jockey with seven of his 38 winners so far this season and this son of Shirocco is another who boastsachasingrecordof0-3.

Tactically versatile, it will be interesting to see how he is ridden this afternoon – with this being the first time that Cobden has riddenhim–whilsthisjumpingwillneedto improve.

JoePonting’sShotTowerisanothermaiden over fences, but split a couple of useful performers at Newton Abbot earlier in the month, whenflashinghomedespiteracing fromalongwayoutofthehandicap.

Formerly trained by Paul Nicholls, Glajou shouldappreciatethisslightlysharpertest. He won over 2m½f at this track last August – on what was just his third start for Neil Mulholland–andisanotherwholikesgood ground.

If that form were taken literally, he would have a huge chance here, but his earlier form was much below that level, so it remains to be seen as to whether he can reproduceit.
