Together with glamour, atmosphere, excitement and plenty of celebration, Worcester Racecourse is back with a Bang!

I am delighted, after 7 months of being out of action from racing and after 6 full floods in the meantime, to welcome each and everyone of you here today, back to Worcester Racecourse.

With Ladies Day our biggest meeting of the year, a real showcase event and a massive social occasion, as well as a sporting one; what better fixture to open our gates on!

From us all at Worcester Racecourse, we would firstly like to thank you all for your patience. After now 5 fixtures being abandoned due to the flooding; it has been a real challenge for the team to get this racecourse back up to race fit. We hope you can all appreciate the hard work which has gone into this racecourse, both on the track and off-track.

We are hugely proud to be opening our new weighing room and parade ring which is a spectacular building and really enhances this city racecourse. Please do go and take a walk up and around the parade ring where you can really appreciate the work which has gone into it.

A very warm welcome back to our feature sponsor of today, FBC Manby Bowdler We thank you enormously for the continued support you provide us and wish you a great day. More details of what FBC Manby Bowdler can offer can be found within the race card.

Back with us today are St Richard’s Hospice, who have attended this fixture for over 20 years. We wish you all a very enjoyable day with us; full of fun and celebration. In aid of a fantastic charity, they will be carrying out a bucket collection so if you can spare any change, please do drop some in.

As always, we will be running the Style Awards Best Dressed Competition. For a chance to be in the running for the £500 prize, look out for our spotters who will invite you to the flower wall for a picture and a chance to enter the competition. The competition will close just before the 2nd race.

After racing, head over to the Centre Course for some great live music from tribute band Planet ABBA to finish the day off dancing to some well known songs.

On the track we have 7 exciting races, of which we wish all our runners, riders, owners and trainers the very best of luck today. Our grounds team have been working flat out to get the track in a great position for this highlight of our calendar year; with some very long days on track repair from the extensive floods; it does not go unappreciated and we thank all for the support from across the group.

We, as a team here at Worcester wish you the best raceday experience today and most of all, we thank you for supporting us. We do hope you will join us again at the home of Summer Jumping throughout our 2024 Season now the gates are fully back open. Please visit our website and social for more details of what is happening here on course!

Have a great day with us and good luck!

We hope to see you again for our next raceday on Thursday 13th June.

Horse & Jockey Welfare at Worcester

Nothing matters more to us when racing than the safety and welfare of both horse and rider Central to that is the track itself and our groundstaff do everything in their power to provide an optimum racing surface. On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage. Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse. The locations and vehicle movements of these skilled specialists during racing are designed to provide a rapid response to any incident across the site. We also have a high-specification horse ambulance in attendance at every fixture to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital.

It is our standard practice to erect screens around any horse or jockey requiring attention on the course as this provides privacy and a safe, calm environment in which to accurately diagnose and treat the patient as necessary

Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse. We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy, please visit our website www.worcester-racecourse.co.uk.

Safety

In the interests of public safety all visitors to the Racecourse should follow directions of the Safety Stewards on the Stands and the Race Day Staff throughout the Racecourse. Please do not leave bags or your possessions unattended at any time as this could cause a security alert. It is an offence to be drunk at a sporting event and for this reason people clearly under the influence of alcohol will be asked to leave the racecourse. Racegoers are requested to be particularly aware of their personal safety in all areas where they come into close contact with the horses, such as the parade ring and the horse walks.

Seating/Viewing

Racegoers are requested not to stand in the marked gangways on the Grandstand Steppings as this will compromise safety

Vehicles On The Course

Please note that several vehicles containing the doctors, vets and officials will be travelling around the Centre Course area during each race. For this reason and in the interests of safety, visitors in the Centre Course enclosure are requested to remain within the defined enclosure.

Wireless Transmitting

Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

HOW TO READ YOUR RACECARD You must be 18 or over to place a bet You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

We Are Back With a Bang!

As anyone who lives or works alongside the River Severn knows, there’s a cost that comes with all that natural beauty, writes Michael Thomas, general manager at Worcester Racecourse in his first column for the Worcester News.

In a sense, you become conditioned to the challenges of flooding and accept it as routine. Our turf down on the racecourse has also become conditioned to river water. When submerged, it can last much longer than ordinary grass. But even by Worcester standards, the past few months have been exceptionally difficult. We have had six, fullon, break-the-banks floods, in as many months.

In the end, all that water and disruption has proven too much for our track and we lost the first three racing fixtures of the season.

The meetings for May 7 and May 13 were switched to Hereford and more recently we have reluctantly had to move the planned May 24 fixture to Hereford as well.

To give an idea of the problems, it has only been in the past five weeks or so that we’ve been able to get a tractor onto the surface to be able to start work. But just like the grass has adapted and become resilient, so have the ground staff and other people who work at the racecourse.

They may get a little disheartened at times, but they soon move on and meet those challenges. So, I am delighted to say that we are throwing the gates open and welcoming everyone back for our first meeting of the season

Traditionally, Ladies Day has always been our biggest meeting of the year, a real showcase event, a magnificent social occasion as well as a sporting one.

Visitors will also notice one or two big changes to the place. The biggest will be the opening of the new weighing room, a project that has not been without its challenges due to the flooding. It’s state of the art, a brand spanking new facility that has replaced one of the oldest weighing rooms in the country.

We have more space for the jockeys, designated space for female jockeys (which didn’t exist before), all the technical bells and whistles, plus a balcony overlooking the river.

It will be in use for the first time today, with the official red ribbon opening later in June. Racegoers will also see we’ve moved the parade ring to a different location, which has opened up a lovely new lawn space directly next door – a beautiful area of 700 square metres. It means people can come along, sit on the lawn in our garden furniture, and watch a great day’s racing. So, racing is coming back to Worcester – and we’re coming back with a bang.

BRANDT’s exploits over hurdles were mixed but he was shaping encouragingly (looked sure to be placed) when unseating 2 out on chase debut at Uttoxeter 2 weeks ago and he could just be worth chancing to build on that effort given his low-mileage profile in this sphere. Royal Sam remains with unfinished business as a chaser and he’s feared, along with chase-debutant Gieves and Chemical Warfare.

CLARENDON HOUSE arrives at the top of his game and his strong-travelling style is suited to this speedy track so he is taken to build on last year’s third here. The handily-weighted Silky Wilkie was runner-up in this 12 months ago and could emerge as the main danger, although a host of others can also have a say in a typically competitive Dash, notably Looking For Lynda, The Bell Conductor, Dream Composer and Live In The Moment

Aidan O’Brien might hold the key to this race yet again. While LOS ANGELES was no striking winner of the Leopardstown Derby Trial on his fast-ground reappearance he was nicely on top at the line and looks sure to benefit from the step up to 1 1/2m. He won’t be inconvenienced should there be any ease in the going having won a Group 1 on soft at 2 and looks a solid alternative to stablemate City of Troy, who looked outstanding at 2 but bombed out in the 2000 Guineas.
