Worcester Racecard - Thursday 25th July

Page 1

Today, we officially open the new weighing room!

A very warm welcome to each and everyone here today, of which will be a very memorable day. This afternoon is the official grand opening of the weighing room, which is now the newest among racecourses in the UK, featuring state-of-the-art facilities.

We have some very prominent attendees here with us today, one of which is Don Weaver; who is our longest serving member of Worcester Racecourse and has been given the honour of cutting the ribbon. Please make your way down to the weighing room for 1pm, where this will take place, before the start of racing.

On the track today, after yet another huge amount of entries, we have 7 races with large numbers. With 89 declared horses to run, it is going to be a fantastic afternoon of racing. Today, we also have 10 female jockeys with us too which is great to see. Arena Racing Company have recently collaborated with Women in Racing, of which we fully support here as the majority of our team both in the office and grounds team are women.

We have an array of sponsors here with us today, of which we would like to thank each and everyone of you for your continued support A warm welcome to the Berkely Care Group, who are taking a race sponsorship for the first time. From all the team here at Worcester Racecourse, we hope you all have a very enjoyable day with us. Race sponsorship is a fantastic way to promote your business, or for a great celebration. If you are interested in this, please do get in touch with our office at info@worcester-racecourse.co.uk

Today we also have the start of our “Schools out for the Summer” Picnic enclosure, within the centre course. This package allows you to bring your own food and drink picnic, together with up to 5 passengers and will continue throughout the summer holidays here. All details can be found on our website at www.worcester-racecourse.co.uk.

After today, we have a small break from racing and will return on Monday 19th August, where we have 2 fixtures in one week. Hope to see you then!

WORCESTER RACECOURSE is part of Arena Racing Company which includes; Bath, Brighton, Chepstow, Doncaster, Ffos Las, Fontwell Park, Great Yarmouth, Hereford, Lingfield Park, Newcastle, Royal Windsor, Sedgefield, Southwell, Uttoxeter and Wolverhampton racecourses.

Horse & Jockey Welfare at Worcester

Nothing matters more to us when racing than the safety and welfare of both horse and rider Central to that is the track itself and our groundstaff do everything in their power to provide an optimum racing surface. On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage. Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse. The locations and vehicle movements of these skilled specialists during racing are designed to provide a rapid response to any incident across the site. We also have a high-specification horse ambulance in attendance at every fixture to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital.

It is our standard practice to erect screens around any horse or jockey requiring attention on the course as this provides privacy and a safe, calm environment in which to accurately diagnose and treat the patient as necessary

Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse. We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy, please visit our website www.worcester-racecourse.co.uk.

Safety

In the interests of public safety all visitors to the Racecourse should follow directions of the Safety Stewards on the Stands and the Race Day Staff throughout the Racecourse. It is an offence to be drunk at a sporting event and for this reason people clearly under the influence of alcohol will be asked to leave the racecourse. Racegoers are requested to be particularly aware of their personal safety in all areas where they come into close contact with the horses, such as the parade ring and the horse walks.

Seating/Viewing

Racegoers are requested not to stand in the marked gangways on the Grandstand Steppings as this will compromise safety

Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

GETAWAY VIC looked an uncomplicated ride when powering away to make a winning Rules debut here a month ago, and while a penalty makes life harder, he may well be up to the challenge. Loki’s Mischief was 2 3/4 lengths behind the selection that day and is entitled to finish closer this time, with Targa Blue perhaps the pick of the newcomers 1-2-3:
