Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: ★★★★★ Selected to win the race. ★★★★✩ Good chance of being placed. ★★★✩✩ By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims ★★✩✩✩ Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. ★✩✩✩✩ Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CONTINGENCY FEE had a very productive 2021, scoring 5 times, and might have been found a good opportunity to get the current campaign off to a winning start if he’s ready to go after a 4-month break. A market move for the lightly-raced Mitigated Risk on his first outing for the John Butler yard would make him a possible threat.

Racegoers are advised that bookmakers are not obliged to pay until the ‘Weighed in’ is announced, nor to remain on the course more than 5 minutes after that announcement.

FIFTH RACE 3.13 ONE MILE ABOUT TWO FURLONGS (10F ABT 23YDS) FOR FOUR YRS OLD AND UPWARDS

THE QUINNBET ACCA BONUS HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 5) Total race value £7100 x Owners Prize Money. 1st £2774, 2nd £1386, 3rd £694, 4th £346, 5th £240. (Penalty Value £3510) Weights raised 1lb and paragraphs 27 to 31 of the Weights and Handicapping Code complied with where applicable. SS

RACE STATS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): M Botti (6 wins from 87 runners, 7%) runs BLUENOSE BELLE TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): D M Loughnane (1 win from 12 runners, 8%) runs STARFIGHTER WEIGHTWATCHER: PLEDGE OF HONOUR won off a handicap mark of 75, his rating is now down 11lb to 64. LONGEST TRAVELLER: STARFIGHTER trained by D M Loughnane, Kidderminster, 204 miles. RACE SUMMARY

Having taken a step back in the right direction when fourth of 16 on return at Windsor, HOTSPUR HARRY is by far the most solid candidate of the quintet due to go to post. Given that Pledge of Honour was seven lengths adrift of the selection at Windsor and is just 2lb better off here, and Alpha King’s profile is unconvincing, Starfighter and Bluenose Belle rate the main dangers. 1-2-3: 1.HOTSPUR HARRY (IRE) 2.STARFIGHTER 3.BLUENOSE BELLE (USA) KEY colours

The vote goes to BAKE, who was progressive prior to misfiring on his final start of last season at Haydock where conditions were probably against him. Back on better ground and with William Buick in the hot-seat, the 4-y-o is taken to get back on track. Goddess of Fire’s C&D reappearance success served as a reminder that she is dangerous when allowed a soft lead and John Ryan’s charge should give another good account. Magnetised is best of the remaining trio.

It’s fair to say that AJRAD possesses his share of quirks, but the fitting of a hood could prove beneficial and he is appealing on the back of an encouraging reappearance third on the all-weather at Lingfield.
