RACE STATS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): C Wall (27 wins from 135 runners, 20%) runs THE THUNDERER. TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): M Bell (3 wins from 26 runners, 12%) runs TRUE COURAGE. LONGEST TRAVELLER: FRANCO GRASSO trained by P Chapple-Hyam, TRUE COURAGE trained by M Bell, ENGRAVE trained by J Feilden, THE THUNDERER trained by C Wall, BAKERSBOY trained by P McEntee, all Newmarket, 66 miles. RACE SUMMARY
TRUE COURAGE has returned to form on his last 2 starts and can get back to winning ways having been competing at a higher grade since his last success. The last time he ran at this level he was completing a hat-trick at this course (14f) almost a year ago, so he can go one better than on his latest run. C&D winner Franco Grasso is feared most, ahead of The Thunderer who could have more to offer at this trip.

MIGHTY MIND got back on track when runner-up at Lingfield earlier this month and can open his account this time around. PRINCEVILLE is a likely type on paper and can make a successful debut for his leading connections. His brother Yalta was a smart 2-y-o, winning on his first start before going on to land a Group 3 later in the year, so Princeville is taken to also get off the mark on his racecourse bow. Alif Power sets the standard and can give the selection most to think about, ahead of the choicely-bred newcomer Lord Uhtred.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE THREE
The Great British Bonus (GBB) offers multiple bonuses of up to £20,000 per eligible race for British-bred fillies and mares.
THE WEATHERBYS BLOODSTOCK PRO HANDICAP STAKES Just the four go to post for race four on today’s card, the Weatherbys Bloodstock Pro Handicap and the weights are headed – for this 0-85 class 4 event – by the Jamie Osborne-trained Notions. The son of Lope de Vega steps up to a mile for the first time and he has yet to rediscover the form which saw him surge home (had been held in a pocket) to win at Goodwood on his first start at three. That form hasn’t worked out at all, however, although on a more positive note, the stable are in good form and he is bred to get the trip. Conservative is another who won on reappearance – in a novice event at Southwell – and he has since hit the frame in handicaps at Wolverhampton and Newbury, and is stepping back up in trip, having been running over seven furlongs on his past two starts. Quicker ground might increase his chance and he drops in grade, with that Newbury contest being a 0-90 class 3. The Churchill gelding made virtually all when winning at Southwell and given that there doesn’t appear to be a lot of pace on, it might be advisable to attempt similar tactics this afternoon. He could easily be allowed an uncontested lead, which would make him dangerous. This is the first start on turf for the Charlie Appleby-trained Western Writer who is yet another who won first time up this season. That appeared to be a fairly decent maiden on paper beforehand and he came wide and late to win over seven furlongs. He again finished strongly when runner-up in a handicap over this trip at Kempton only eight days ago and is due to go up 3lbs for future races. First-time cheek-pieces are applied – presumably in the hope that it will help him maintain his position through the first half of the race – and the very able Harry Davies takes off a valuable 5lbs. If the race doesn’t come too quickly for him on the back of his latest start, the Godolphin-owned son of Shamardal looks sure to go well. Sir Michael Stoute’s Ikhtiraaq completes the small field, on what will be just his second start for the trainer. Sold as part of the Shadwell dispersal in October (cost 220,000gns), the Invincible Spirit colt shaped like he would improve the run at Newmarket’s Craven meeting. He didn’t enjoy the clearest of runs on what was his first start at a mile and faded inside the final furlong. He beat the 98-rated Akhu Najla on his final start for Owen Burrows, whilst the third has also won since and is now rated 87. Strictly on that form alone he looks potentially well-handicapped and the Newmarket form has worked out well, with the second (twice), third and fourth all having won subsequently. From a mark of 79, he is another who looks more than capable of winning a handicap such as this, although – at the time of writing – Stoute had gone a short while without a winner. In fairness, he has had several hit the frame, so it isn’t as though they are all running poorly.

RACE STATS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): Sir M Stoute (13 wins from 72 runners, 18%) runs IKHTIRAAQ. TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): C Appleby (9 wins from 38 runners, 24%) runs WESTERN WRITER. LONGEST TRAVELLER: CONSERVATIVE trained by M Meade, Manton, 201 miles. RACE SUMMARY
WESTERN WRITER looked unlucky not to follow up his Chelmsford maiden success on his handicap debut at Kempton last week, having conceded first run to the winner, so he’s taken to make amends now fitted with first-time cheekpieces. Conservative will prove suited by a return to 1m and is feared most with a good value claimer taking over in the saddle. 1-2-3: 1.WESTERN WRITER (IRE) 2.CONSERVATIVE (IRE) 3.IKHTIRAAQ (IRE) KEY colours
