Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: ★★★★★ Selected to win the race. ★★★★✩ Good chance of being placed. ★★★✩✩ By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims ★★✩✩✩ Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. ★✩✩✩✩ Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

LONGEST TRAVELLER: DAZZLING DAN trained by Olly Williams, Market Rasen, 122 miles. RACE SUMMARY

It’s pretty hard to escape the profile of KODIAC SIGN given he displayed progressive form in his qualifying runs and represents a yard with very few peers with similar types. PRINCEVILLE will have derived a lot from his opening second in a 6f course novice a fortnight ago, and with the drop to 5f probably wise at his stage of his career given how free he was, he will take some stopping. GREAT BRITISH BONUS SCHEME

WELFARE OF HORSE & JOCKEY It is policy at this racecourse for screens to be erected in circumstances where we have any horse, or jockey in a condition whereby treatment is being administered and a degree of privacy is deemed appropriate. The use of screens does not therefore automatically infer that a fatality has occurred.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

Low-grade stuff. STAR OF ST LOUIS snapped a string of runner-up efforts to get off the mark over C&D last week, and now dropped into classified company here, Denis Quinn’s charge looks to have stronger credentials than most. RACE STATS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): H Spiller (9 wins from 73 runners, 12%) runs BOADICEA BELLE TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): G Boughey (4 wins from 34 runners, 12%) runs SPANGLED MAC LONGEST TRAVELLER: NOYA trained by H & R Charlton, Beckhampton, 209 miles. RACE SUMMARY

SPANGLED MAC escapes a penalty for last week’s Kempton success, and while he seemingly needed every yard of the 7f trip to get on top that day, he’s clearly not short of speed given that he made a winning debut over 5.7f at Bath in May. George Boughey’s charge should prove a tough nut to crack back on turf. There’s not much to choose between his two rivals, Noya and Boadicea Belle, with the former just about shading it as the main danger.
