A tricky opening contest to solve but preference is for LELABAD. A consistent performer for this yard, he again wasn’t beaten far sporting a first-time visor when fourth over C&D last month and a repeat effort may well be enough to see him open his account. Alafdhal, Split Elevens and Hi Ho Silver are just a handful of potential dangers. 9-13 (7)

HER MAJESTY

Having first sat on a horse at the age of three, the young Princess Elizabeth was an accomplished horsewoman long before owning racehorses, with her first winner Monaveen coming in partnership with her mother at Fontwell Park in October 1949.

She was champion owner in 1954 and again in 1957, when Oaks winner Carrozza provided her with a first Classic success. Further Classic glory followed with Pall Mall in the 1958 2,000 Guineas, before Highclere took the fillies’ equivalent in 1974.

Her Majesty The Queen was at the forefront of British racing for over 70 years, during which time she was champion owner on the Flat on two occasions and won four of the five Classics.

The only Classic to elude the Queen was the Derby Aureole was runner-up in 1953 and Carlton House finished third in 2011.

After ascending the throne following the death of her father King George VI in February 1952, The Queen inherited the royal studs and quickly became one of the dominant owner-breeders of the period.

The Queen’s love of horseracing made her a regular visitor to Doncaster in the early years of her reign. In her coronation year of 1953, she was accompanied to the St Leger meeting by Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill.

She also enjoyed notable success at the track with Height Of Fashion in the 1981 May Hill Stakes. The daughter of Highclere was later sold to the late Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum for £1.2million and went on to produce 2,000 Guineas and Derby winner Nashwan and four-time G1 scorer

The Queen was a patron of both The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association. She also received two of the most prestigious awards in racing, the Cartier Millennium Award of Merit in 2000 and the Sir Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust Award in 2002.

In the BBC documentary, The Queen’s Racehorses: A Personal View, made in 1974, she said: “My philosophy about racing is simple. I enjoy breeding a horse that is faster than other people’s. And to me, that is a gamble from a long way back. I enjoy going racing but I suppose, basically, I love horses, and the thoroughbred epitomises a really good horse to me.”

MoreNayef.recently,

Star filly Dunfermline completed a Classic double in the Silver Jubilee year of 1977. Following a battling success in the Oaks, the royal filly stunned Alleged in the St Leger at Doncaster, a victory that ensured she was Europe’s champion threeyear-old filly that year.

The Queen’s Gold Cup winner Estimate landed the 2014 Doncaster Cup, while King’s Lynn was her final winner of the track, taking the Listed Wentworth Stakes in November 2021.

The Queen’s involvement in the horse world stretched far beyond racing. As well as thoroughbreds, she bred Highland ponies, Cleveland Bays, polo ponies and sports horses – including Doublet, who carried her daughter Princess Anne to victory in the 1971 European Eventing Championships.

The BHA they have taken part in asufficient number of the Handicappers assessment of each horse’sability. The principal purpose of the ratings is determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent formunder its optimum conditions. Ahorse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb morethanahorse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecardfor handicap races arethe ratings that wereused to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race wereconfirmed. Any subsequently published change to arating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
