OFFICIAL RACECARD | £4.00 FRIDAY JUNE 14TH MID SUMMER RACEDAY

A very warm welcome to York Racecourse for our mid-summer raceday (hopefully Mother Nature will read this card and respond) with a fascinating racecard offering a prize fund of £200,000 with the Seat Unique Stakes as the £70,000 feature race.

Seat Unique are a valued partner, powering the hospitality elements of our website yorkracecourse.co.uk, so we are delighted to see them return to York. There are some familiar names amongst the field, with ten previous winners over the distance heading to post, expect to see the strong performers return for a tilt at the 65th John Smith’s Cup on Saturday 13 July, get your ante post bet on today at the on-course William Hill shops.

The excitement continues in the Winner’s Enclosure after our second race, as the successful horse in a unique contest in York’s calendar - the CGE Yorkshire Rous Seller – comes under the hammer of Bernard Condren, our Goffs UK auctioneer. Enjoy the spectacle but be mindful that a poorly timed scratch of the nose could see you returning home with a new four-legged friend!

We are proud to be working with the British European Breeders’ Fund in staging the 3pm race, a valuable contest for fillies over six furlongs, as both York Racecourse and the British EBF are committed advocates of Racing with Pride York Racecourse is determined to ensure racing on the Knavesmire is welcoming and inclusive for all – racegoers, visitors and colleagues alike. Our senior management team have committed to the industry Diversity and Inclusion Strategy, and we have undertaken Diversity and Inclusion training modules and have sought to ensure all departments and areas are as diverse, inclusive and welcoming as possible We are actively working within racing, alongside the Diversity in Racing Steering Group to ensure that racing’s diverse workforce can be confident, comfortable and be part of a fully inclusive community. We welcome DiRSG members to York this afternoon who will use the Edwardian Weighing Room as a base for the day.

A recent addition to our calendar, is the valuable £30,000 Novice Fillies race at 3.35pm; the investment by Juddmonte into this series of races is most welcome, to help develop the future stars.

Today’s six-figure prize money and the course improvements can only be achieved through your support and that of our sponsors. Many thanks for your attendance and to Seat Unique, Juddmonte, Andy Thornton Hospitality Furniture, CGE Yorkshire, the European Breeders Fund, and Irish Thoroughbred Marketing (if it is a Friday on the Knavesmire then our friends from The Curragh are in town) for their generous support. Talking of our sponsors do visit the Champagne Pavilion to sit on some of our Andy Thornton furniture!

It is approaching twenty years since the Knavesmire played temporary host to the Royal meeting, with the sporting connection still common, so do look out for York winners next week at Royal Ascot, you can see where any of today’s contestants might feature by the following the symbol next to their names in this racecard.

The team have been busy preparing for the return of a summer crowd, the Roberto Pavilion with its fast-serve bar and fish & chip shop is Phase One of the Southern End Development (see p36) with the rest on track for delivery by the Sky Bet Ebor Festival. We look forward to the opening of the Churchill Tyres lawn and canopy, Reg Bond Gates, improved Theakston Bar, William Hill betting shop and toilets.

I hope that you are able to come racing at York again soon, perhaps even tomorrow to Macmillan Charity Raceday, just by so doing you will help raise money for this incredible cause Alternatively, you can support a jockey in the Ride of Their Lives or join in the online auction, which is already live, by following the link from our website, more details on p14, or perhaps try a raffle ticket as it might be your best chance of a winner!

For now, I wish you an enjoyable and successful day.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.

The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.

FAQS

Is there accessible and blue badge parking?

Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?

Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection.. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.

Can I bring a wheelchair?

Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted.

Can I bring somebody to help?

Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.

Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?

Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.

What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?

Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.

Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?

Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.

Wheelchair height betting?

Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.

Can I bring my assistance dog?

Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome.

There was one more thing?

Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.

Examples of viewing platforms both around the Parade Ring and trackside

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Racing Post Standard Times

is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90-rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race.

Non-runner

Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration.

Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

A WINTER’S TALE:

WHAT IS NEW AT YORK THIS SEASON?

A LOT OF WORK HAS GONE INTO THE SOUTHERN END DEVELOPMENT (SEE P36-37), HOWEVER THE RACECOURSE TEAMS HAVE BEEN BUSY ELSEWHERE…..

WINE & CHEESE BAR

EDWARDIAN WEIGHING ROOM

Since 2015, this one-time hub of the racing operation has been a popular destination for racegoers who want to combine a little nostalgia with their drinks. This winter, a Wine & Cheese Bar has been added. Speaking about the new treats, the head of our food operation, Kevin Pinnington said: “People were always telling me how much they liked the old wine & cheese cellar, then doing our stock take, I realised we had some really lovely wines that were effectively bin-ends because we didn’t have enough bottles to offer them on the main wine list. So, this new bar is a bit of a “back to the future” as it’s a way to let County Stand badgeholders try them by the glass, combined with some traditional favourites. Add in a selection of carefully chosen Yorkshire cheeses plus some cold meats and we hope people will enjoy it.”

KNAVESMIRE

STAND

The high class action on the track is clearly seen from the steppings and boxes of this stand, however the PA system was showing its age. A major investment should mean that the commentators can now better add to the drama and let you know what price your winning bets were returned at As with any new technology, it might take a few meetings to settle in, so please help us by sharing your experience with the team on the ground.

24 24

ALCOVES BAR

GIMCRACK STAND

Another County Stand area, that once discovered is much loved, has benefited from a winter refurbishment. Lighter and brighter, check out the extended range of Tanqueray gins, offered with premium Schweppes tonics.

MULTIPLE BARS

The new Bar in the Roberto Pavilion should speed up drinks service in that area but we’ve also added even more fast tills, there are nearly 250 around the site. Not to mention thirty new under the bar fridges.

OUT OF SIGHT:

Every winter a whole host of “out of sight work” is completed. The investment in these infrastructure projects keeps the racecourse functioning on the busy days This year the pumps in the Ebor Stand were replaced and drainage works undertaken outside the Gimcrack Stand.

About a mile from the track is the working home of Head Gardener, Zak Rafferty A regular winner of Yorkshire in Bloom Awards, the Victorian Greenhouse has benefited from major refurbishment.

About Seven Furlongs (1,400 metres)

See page 76 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 7f

Race Type:

Rating: 66-85

Prize Money: £20,000

Age: 4+

Stalls: Farside

We open with a testing handicap, remember the independent assessor who is the handicapper has given differing weights to these participants with the intention of creating an equally matched contest. Open only to horses aged four-years-old and over and intended for those whose mark is between 66-85 The spotlight falls on the jockeys as this race is limited to apprentice riders. There is a sliding scale as measured by winners; a partnership receives a 7lb benefit if the apprentice has ten of fewer previous winning rides, as would be the case for Shay Farmer aboard Tolstoy. At the other end of the spectrum, Riot gets no respite having one of the most successful apprentice riders on his back, Mark Winn.

Maybe visit the Parade Ring to assess the nerves before placing your bet.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

In what looks a wide-open affair, HECTIC can get his supporters off to a flyer He was last seen finishing third in a warm handicap over 7f at Doncaster earlier this month and, off an unchanged mark, another bold bid from this habitual prominent racer is expected. Cori Glory scored comfortably on her reappearance over 7f at Catterick last month and she can emerge as the main danger upped 6lb Yaaser and Riot are a couple of others who merit respect.

THE PLAN IS ON TRACK

Southern End Development

Regular visitors to the Knavesmire will have seen the ongoing investment in the facilities for horses, participants and racegoers at York. This commitment to improve the experience of racing at York continues with the focus being the area that lies to the south of the Knavesmire Stand and behind the Bustardthorpe Stand.

As you can see a multi-million pound project to improve this area for Grandstand & Paddock racegoers is already well underway

The Roberto Pavilion is open for this meeting, providing a fast - serve bar, a fish & chip shop and a cocktail/Pimms bar Plus, tote & William Hill outlets.

By the time of the Sky Bet Ebor Festival in August, the Churchill Tyres Lawn and Canopy will be a great spot to relax and enjoy the food outlets and improved Theakston Bar that will flank it. A state of the art William Hill betting shop will reopen, with a new block of toilets.

In keeping with the Green Knavesmire 300 commitment, a host of sustainability features have been embedded; a living roof, rainwater harvesting and solar panels being examples. That is why there are a few changes to the Southern End today. If you are looking for a pint of Ebor IPA, you can now find it on the Dayjur Bar on the mezzanine floor of the Knavesmire Stand.

Architect impressions of the planned improvements 36 36

THE HIGHLIGHTS ARE:

• Refurbishing the structure of the 1913 Bustardthorpe Stand viewing steppings, open for use today.

• A new, single storey, fast serve Roberto Pavilion that includes a fast- serve bar, a fish & chip shop as well as a Pimms/Cocktail bar. Open for use today.

• Replacing and extending the existing single-storey extension to the rear of the Bustardthorpe Stand creating a new, bigger Theakston Bar and William Hill betting shop.

• Creating two new racegoer lawns with an overarching canopy similar to that covering the John Carr Terrace.

• Additional toilet, catering and betting facilities.

• Improved arrival experience, including feature gates that remember owner-breeder, Reg Bond and improved accessibility.

The CGE Yorkshire Rous Selling Stakes

Six Furlongs (1,200 metres)

See page 76 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 6f

Race Type: Selling

Prize Money: £25,000

Age: 2

Stalls: Centre

A race limited to 2yo horses so in their first season, meaning level weights for runners of the same sex, save for Whinchurch who has to carry 3lbs extra after success at Southwell in April. Also, notice how Lucky Lottery is one of six runners to carry less, as there is an allowance given to the fillies in the race to recognise their relative strength against the boys, at this stage in their career

This selling stakes aims to showcase horses which are for sale; imagine a car dealer having a race of all the motors available on the forecourt. Immediately after the race the winner is offered for sale by an auction. Bidding is conducted by Bernard Condren of Goffs UK and is to start at the minimum price of £15,000 and any other horse in the race can be claimed for £30,000 If the horse has won particularly well then you may see the original owner trying to buy it back, hopefully for less than the prize money it has just collected!

Blame the press for your betting by seeking advice from the board by the Winner’s Enclosure.

MRBLUESKY shaped with more promise than the bare result suggests when finishing fifth on his debut over 5f at Redcar last month, becoming outpaced before running on well when the penny dropped. Now stepping up in trip for the in-form Richard Fahey team, he gets the vote to score. I Love Dad made a pleasing start when finishing third over 5f at Goodwood last Sunday and he is respected with improvement forthcoming, while last-time-out winner Isla Bella completes the shortlist.

HOW MIGHT YOU SOLVE A BIG SPRINT HANDICAP?

BRITISH EBF SUPPORTING RACING WITH PRIDE FILLIES’ HANDICAP

1) FORM

Here at York it often pays to side with horses in form but it is also important that they look like they still have a bit of improvement left. There are a few who come here without having the best of recent records and so might be best ignored today including Lady Pink Rose, Conservationist and Born To Rock

2) THE DRAW

This afternoon’s British EBF Supporting Racing With Pride Fillies’ Handicap looks a tricky betting proposition for novice racegoers with thirteen closely matched runners set to go to post. Is it best to plump for a lucky number, an interesting name or a set of jockey silks you like the look of? Whilst all of these strategies may throw up the odd winner, a safer and more prudent approach would be to apply some straightforward methodology. Narrowing down the field of thirteen declared runners is easier than you think if you follow a few simple guidelines, to hopefully identify the winner of this and the other handicaps. Before we start, it is important to understand what a handicap is. Once a horse has raced three times they are given an official rating (often referred to as a handicap mark) by the British Horseracing Authority. This provides a numerical guide to each horse’s level of ability. Ratings usually start at around 40 for a modest performer with the mighty Frankel finishing his career in the 140s. The ranking operates the opposite way around from a golf handicap, so each time a horse runs this rating is adjusted either upwards for a good performance or down for a weaker effort, so that it reflects the horses most recent form.

Each of these rating points are meant to reflect 1lb in weight, so looking at today’s race, Al Simmo is rated 90 is considered 1lb “better” than Midream who is rated 89. If these horses were to race carrying the same weight theoretically Another Investment should win every time as he is the better horse. Races which were too predictable wouldn’t make good viewing and therefore the handicap is designed to set a level playing field. So in this example Al Simmo carries 1lb more than Midream, which should in theory see them cross the line together and that rule applies to all of the fourteen runners – but, despite dead heats being a possibility, you won’t ever see all seventeen runners cross the line together so how to separate them in advance?

Horses which won or ran well last time will attract the interest of the handicapper and a rise of 6 or 7lb can often follow. Sometimes this can prove a step too far as horses then struggle to concede weight to lower rated rivals. Eventually as the horse continues to run without winning their rating will come back down to a winnable mark and the whole cycle begins again. The art is working out which category your horse falls into. Don’t forget to ensure you keep an eye and an ear out for non-runners, there will be announcements over the PA system and the screens around the course will be updated with non-runner information, as they have to be in it to win it!

Where a horse is drawn in the stalls can be an important factor, particularly in a sprint and is perhaps one of the most debated topics in racing. Some punters swear that being drawn close to a rail is an advantage as it keeps a horse focused on running straight. However here at York, in recent seasons those drawn down the centre of the track have often held the upper hand, the counter logic being that their jockey can keep an eye on the competition on both flanks. Perhaps Katey Kontent can use this to her advantage.

3) DISTANCE

Having a runner who has already shown their liking for a particular trip can be invaluable. Al Simmo, Midream and Star Of Lady M are a selection of those that have won over today’s distance.

4) GROUND

If you thought the debates over draw were intense then try talking about the impact of ground to a racing anorak. In simple terms, different horses run better on different types of surface, just like some human athletes might prefer cross country to the track. So make sure to check the weather and the ground description. The current going could suit the likes of Jumbeau, Apeeling or Katey Kontent.

5) YORK RECORD

“Horses for courses” is not a popular phrase by accident, just like football teams have a lucky ground. This race doesn’t have any runners that have won here at York before which means one of them will get off the mark today.

6) CONCLUSION

Following these simple rules has helped to narrow down the shortlist. Going on a hunch that ‘good’ will be the description, the Ed Walker-trained Midream might well build on her strong start to life on the track given her neutral draw.

Racing With Pride was established in 2020 as British racing’s official LGBT+ network, offering a community for people to find support and friendship, as well as influence social change and promote a diverse and inclusive industry.

Pride Month provides an opportunity for people to come together to celebrate how far LGBT+ rights have come whilst recognising there’s still work to be done. It is also about visibly demonstrating acceptance and inclusion, while raising awareness of issues affecting the LGBT+ community. We are delighted to partner with York Racecourse and the European Breeders’ Fund once again in recognition of this important celebration.

Members from our network and the wider LGBT+ community, together with allies, will be on-course today networking and enjoying the afternoon’s racing. For anyone looking to find out more, the Edwardian Weighing Room is the nominated place to find a welcoming face.

Anyone can support Racing With Pride’s ongoing work to show that British horseracing is a sport for everyone. Whether you’re a member of the LGBT+ community or an ally who wants to show their support, we’d love to hear from you.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

JUMBEAU was sporting first-time cheekpieces (retained) when getting the better of a useful sort over 5f at Windsor last month and, upped 4lb, she could be a force to be reckoned with in sprint handicaps this season. Katey Kontent came with a wet sail to lead in the dying strides over 6f at Windsor latest and another bold bid can be expected. Punters seeking an unexposed sprinter will surely look to Midream, who makes her handicap debut on the back of a solid third in Listed company.

Fillies’ Restricted Novice Stakes

Five Furlongs (1,000 metres)

See page 76 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 5f

Race

Age: 2f

Stalls: Centre

In that quest for a competitive race this one is limited to 2-year-old fillies running over 5 furlongs, the shortest distance in British racing. It is a valuable prize for such thoroughbreds and is part of an initiative, backed by Juddmonte, to identify the stars of the future.

All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock.

If any had previous success it would add weight at varying amounts depending on the grade of the race won; however, all are still seeking that elusive first “W”.

Now the fun bit, to add a layer of competition (or for some complexity) a runner’s weight can be lowered (an allowance) based on having been bought comparatively cheaply at a recognised auction, so the market was deemed as an assessment of their quality and hence potential. The most expensive being categorised as Band A, the next group as Band B and so on. If you must know, the Band As went for above £50,000 descending in roughly £20,000 bands thereafter Any horse in from a lower Band racing in opposition to one from a higher band benefit from an allowance, so Havana Gila carries a lower weight because a “better” horse such as Baileys Jubilation races against her Extend the logic the filly, I Got Soul, is from a yet lower Band, so has a further reduction in the lead carried.

All a bit much? Then go for the alternative “P” for “pin” rather than “pedigree”.

Although RIVER SEINE disappointed when sent off as favourite at Carlisle last time out, she finished ahead of the reopposing Baileys Jubilation in a warm Newmarket novice on her debut. The Soldier’s Call filly has shown great speed on her two starts so far and this flat track will play to her strengths. The latter, who finished a creditable fifth in the Marygate last month, is an obvious threat. Sunshine Soul was second to a potentially useful type at Nottingham on debut and must also enter calculations.

Prize Money: £70,000

Back to a handicap, this time for horses rated up to 105 (putting a ceiling on the handicap mark further ensures competitive action and a chance for a different pool of horses). The distance of one and a quarter miles means that the runners start on the back straight of the Knavesmire

So, pit your wits against the handicapper – if you need some help look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, see how Reach is one with the double consonant seal of previous success over course and distance.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

REACH made a pleasing return to action when filling the frame over C&D last month. A progressive sort during her five-year-old campaign, the Sea The Stars mare can build on that reappearance run before perhaps attempting to double up in the John Smith’s Cup next month. Penzance came up just short when looking to complete a five-timer at Newcastle in March but further progress isn’t out of the question, while others to note include Oviedo, Scampi and Arthur’s Realm.

YORK TO ASCOT LINKED IN HISTORY

AND QUALITY

Approaching twenty years since its visit, but the links between York and the Royal Meeting continue to be strong. Here, we look at a few highlights…

SPRINTING

History shows us: Battaash as the star of the modern era, with his final win at York coming in the Coolmore Nunthorpe in 2020 having already landed the fastest contest in Berkshire. While 2015 Group 1 Platinum Jubilee Stakes winner, Twilight Son, took victory in the Charity Sprint here in the same year Just last year, Bradsell took the then G1 Kings Stand Stakes, having won his first race on the Knavesmire. Serial York heroine, Highfield Princess, followed him close home

The week ahead: Newly minted as the G1 King Charles III, the opening day sprint is the target for Big Evs, successful in the Listed Westow Stakes here last month. Another York winner, Regional, will be hoping to give local handler Ed Bethell another day to remember.

Lake Forest, who took the G2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack last year, is among a host of now three-year-olds with York form who look set for the G1 Commonwealth Cup.

JUVENILES

History shows us: Some of the best two-year-olds are sent to York and the victory of Bradsell in the 2022 EBF Restricted Novice Stakes, before Archie Watson’s colt landed the Group 1 One Kings Stand Stakes, makes the point. The week ahead: In 2022, Karl Burke took the Steve Parkin-owned Dramatised to Berkshire to win the Queen Mary In 2024 he hopes that Andesite in the same colours will back up her Novice Stakes victory at York.

STAYERS

History shows us: We might never see a stayer like the great Stradivarius, who claimed six races on the Knavesmire, to go with his three Gold Cups at Royal Ascot. The week ahead: A winner of the Sky Bet Melrose; Coltrane is going in search of this year’s Gold Cup

Potentially joined by not just one but two former winners of the Sky Bet Ebor itself in Trawlerman (2022) & Absurde (2023) Stradivarius

MIDDLE DISTANCE

History shows us: In 2023, the signposts were rather reversed with two Pattern Race scorers in Berkshire heading up to York to land Group One prizes in August. Mostahdaf claimed the impressive Prince of Wales’s Stakes and Juddmonte International double, whilst Warm Heart progressed from the Ribblesdale to take the Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks.

Continuous

The week ahead: Aidan O’Brien has a terrific record at both venues, with Continuous in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes part of a strong party, the colt landed the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur in his Classic season.

After a strong run in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante, the Godolphin trained Ancient Wisdom has to have an interest in the “Ascot Derby” the G2 King Edward V11 Stakes.

PICK ME AN OUTSIDER

A horse stepping up to Group One company can provide betting market value Consider Devoted Queen who won in Listed company for Charlie Appleby over the Dante Festival, she heads up to the G1 Coronation Stakes.

THE HANDICAPS

History shows us: Picking handicap winners is never easy however the Knavesmire can be an indicator.

The week ahead: Ten times champion trainer on the Knavesmire , Richard Fahey, sends Strike Red to the Wokingham. If you were here to see him take the 2022 version of the Coral Sprint Trophy, then consider the Ascot price. A feature handicap winner at the Dante Festival, Botanical, flies the flag in the Wolferton.

THE OTHER WAY AROUND

A strong cast list but as a leading man, the mighty Frankel won the Queen Anne two months before his career-defining triumph in the Juddmonte International. In 2022, we saw Mostadhaf follow up a win at the Royal Meeting so notebooks and iPads at the ready

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 1m 2f

Race Type: Handicap

Rating: 61-80

Prize Money: £20,000

Age: 4+

Stalls: Inside Rail

To finish off with a handicap race. It is often termed “the get out stakes” and to freshen the available pool, it is open to those who are aged four-years-old and over, it is also over one and a quarter miles.

“Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and in this contest the upper rating of 80 means that though these ones are still quality performers, they won’t have their spotlight stolen by a real superstar. Highest rated so highest weight this time is Artic Mountain.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

The unexposed ARCTIC MOUNTAIN is 6lb well-in under a 5lb penalty for scoring at Lingfield six days ago and, should the relatively quick turnaround be no issue, he’s taken to repeat the dose Pol Roger completed a double at Ayr last month and there might be more to come over this trip. That said, there ought to be plenty of pace on offer which could help a closer such as Shifter, who attempts to land a hat-trick following last month’s Redcar triumph.
