OFFICIAL RACECARD | £4.00 SATURDAY JUNE 15TH FEATURING Churchill Tyres Supporting Macmillan Sprint 53rd Macmillan Charity Raceday

A very warm welcome to York for what looks set to be a great day of sporting action in support of a wonderful charity. We are delighted to be hosting Britain’s biggest charity raceday and Macmillan’s biggest single fundraiser, for the 53rd time.

Over £10m has now been raised over the previous 52 racedays due to the tremendous backing of racegoers, sponsors, charity riders, supporters and the hard work and generosity of so many people, past and present. We thank you all, everyone can take a huge pride in helping people whose lives are affected by cancer. We send our utmost appreciation and thanks to all at Macmillan Cancer Support who dedicate themselves to helping patients and their families cope with this terrible disease

So much is done by so many, however the twelve riders in the Macmillan Ride of Their Lives do merit a special mention, their commitment to fitness, horsemanship and fundraising has been truly impressive - they have already banked over £180,000 and you can add to it by visiting our website to follow a link to their JustGiving pages.

The Churchill Tyres Supporting Macmillan Sprint is the latest example of a business to back this great day. Indeed, they are doubly vested as one of the favourites, Pocklington, carries the colours made famous by the founder of the business, the late Reg Bond. One of Britain’s richest sprint handicaps for three-year-olds, it offers prize money of £100,000.

The roll of honour in this race over six furlongs includes top sprinters such as Cadeaux Genereux, Sheikh Albadou and Twilight Son. It may be that some of today’s field return for our flagship sprint contest, the Group One Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe on Friday 23 August. Always a fascinating contest, it pits Group One winning riders like Ryan Moore and Hayley Turner against upcoming apprentices such as Joe Leavy or Mia Nicholls, each will be hoping their mounts can outpace 18 declared rivals.

With prize money of £70,000 on offer, the black type contest of the afternoon is the Listed Sky Bet Race to the Ebor Grand Cup; which has drawn a quality field. The winner earns a guaranteed berth in the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor on Saturday 24 August, see p44 to find out how. The prestige and the promise of the race has drawn five stayers from Newmarket plus a Lambourn contender

The Queen Mother’s Cup is one of the UK’s richest contest for Female Amateur Jockeys. The jockeys themselves do not take any monetary reward so instead they receive their weight in fabulous Lanson champagne; do watch out for this special weighing-in ceremony in the Winner’s Enclosure. What an afternoon it could be for the Nicholls family, were sisters Mia and Olive (who rides Thundering in our opener) to be toasting joint success by 4 o’clock.

The late Reg Griffin was the driving force behind this charity day for some thirty-eight years and it is a privilege for York to stage the Reg Griffin Appreciation EBF Stallions Maiden Stakes in his honour This looks a particularly high-quality juvenile renewal and the field look sure to compete at a high grade in the months ahead.

The continuing support of the Basil Samuel Charitable Trust, the Ice Company, Fordy Marshall land & Property Consultants as well as that of Churchill Tyres and Sky Bet is hugely appreciated

It is approaching twenty years since the Knavesmire played temporary host to the Royal Meeting, with the sporting connection still common, so do look out for York winners next week at Royal Ascot, you can see where any of today’s contestants might feature by the following the symbol next to their names in this racecard.

The team have been busy preparing for the return of a summer crowd, the Roberto Pavilion with its fast-serve bar and fish&chip shop is Phase One of the Southern End Development (see p50) with the rest on track for delivery by the Sky Bet Ebor Festival. We look forward to the opening of the Churchill Tyres lawn and canopy, Reg Bond Gates, improved Theakston Bar, William Hill betting shop and toilets.

There is the chance to bid for one of the fantastic lots in the Macmillan auction (see p32) or to buy a raffle ticket (see p30), or to guess the number of Yorkie puddings in the horsebox. Do raise a cheer for both our intrepid riders who can relax by 12.35pm as well as for our brave sky divers, who nervously await their rescheduled Macmillan Jump of Their Lives.

Thank you for your support and your generosity this afternoon. I hope you have an enjoyable and successful day.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

A WINTER’S TALE:

WHAT IS NEW AT YORK THIS SEASON?

A LOT OF WORK HAS GONE INTO THE SOUTHERN END DEVELOPMENT (SEE P50-51), HOWEVER THE RACECOURSE TEAMS HAVE BEEN BUSY ELSEWHERE…..

WINE & CHEESE BAR

EDWARDIAN WEIGHING ROOM

Since 2015, this one-time hub of the racing operation has been a popular destination for racegoers who want to combine a little nostalgia with their drinks. This winter, a Wine & Cheese Bar has been added. Speaking about the new treats, the head of our food operation, Kevin Pinnington said: “People were always telling me how much they liked the old wine & cheese cellar, then doing our stock take, I realised we had some really lovely wines that were effectively bin-ends because we didn’t have enough bottles to offer them on the main wine list. So, this new bar is a bit of a “back to the future” as it’s a way to let County Stand badgeholders try them by the glass, combined with some traditional favourites. Add in a selection of carefully chosen Yorkshire cheeses plus some cold meats and we hope people will enjoy it.”

KNAVESMIRE

STAND

The high class action on the track is clearly seen from the steppings and boxes of this stand, however the PA system was showing its age. A major investment should mean that the commentators can now better add to the drama and let you know what price your winning bets were returned at As with any new technology, it might take a few meetings to settle in, so please help us by sharing your experience with the team on the ground.

14

ALCOVES BAR

GIMCRACK STAND

Another County Stand area, that once discovered is much loved, has benefited from a winter refurbishment. Lighter and brighter, check out the extended range of Tanqueray gins, offered with premium Schweppes tonics.

MULTIPLE BARS

The new Bar in the Roberto Pavilion should speed up drinks service in that area but we’ve also added even more fast tills, there are nearly 250 around the site. Not to mention thirty new under the bar fridges.

OUT OF SIGHT:

Every winter a whole host of “out of sight work” is completed. The investment in these infrastructure projects keeps the racecourse functioning on the busy days This year the pumps in the Ebor Stand were replaced and drainage works undertaken outside the Gimcrack Stand.

About a mile from the track is the working home of Head Gardener, Zak Rafferty A regular winner of Yorkshire in Bloom Awards, the Victorian Greenhouse has benefited from major refurbishment.

ESSENTIAL RACING PHRASES FOR THE BEGINNER

Whether you are a regular supporter or joining for the first time, welcome to the 2024 Macmillan Charity Raceday.

Thank you so much for joining us at our annual Macmillan Charity Raceday at York Racecourse, I sincerely hope you have a wonderful time enjoying the world class racing and of course, the fabulous Ride of Their Lives. We are incredibly honoured that through the generosity of everyone who has been associated with this event, we have now raised over a staggering £10 million through our partnership with York Racecourse, 90% of which has gone to Macmillan Cancer Support, enabling Macmillan to be there for people living with cancer in Yorkshire. The remaining 10% goes to several other local charities such as York Against Cancer, St Leonard’s Hospice, Racing Welfare and the Injured Jockeys Fund. That fantastic achievement has only been possible because of the continued support of everyone at York Racecourse, the Racecourse Committee, William Derby, and the countless racegoers who have been such avid supporters of Macmillan. I would like to personally thank each

and every one of you who joined us today, by being here you are making a significant difference to people living with cancer We appreciate every donation or bid on our amazing auction, thank you for supporting Macmillan so generously

There are over 216,000 people living with cancer in Yorkshire and the Humber We estimate this will rise to more than 308,000 by 2030, and one in two of us can expect to receive a cancer diagnosis during our lifetime. Your support really has never been more important.

I very much look forward to joining you for this year’s event and I’d like to offer my thanks for your continued support so we can do whatever it takes to give people the support they need.

Thank you,

RACE DESCRIPTION

The first race today is an opportunity for riding enthusiasts to enjoy the Ride Of Their Lives. This group of jockeys represents many walks of life with many linked to a cancer story. All the riders have got themselves fit and are raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. Start your day by cheering them on; you can have a bet, though the absence of jockey form should moderate your stake.

1 The Dancing Poet

Ch g Poet’s Voice - Caldy Dancer (IRE) (Soviet Star(USA))

Owner: Spring Cottage Syndicate

Trainer: Brian Ellison

8 11-7

Jockey: Karl Avison

Form: 37-815

Breeder: Rabbah Bloodstock Limited

I was inspired to ride in the race for a second time following my recovery from prostate cancer last year. I wanted to raise money to help people living with cancer. The training has been hard, but the team at Jack Berry House have helped with my fitness, and the team at Brian Ellison’s yard has been very supportive. I have been overwhelmed by the incredible level of support from friends, colleagues and local businesses, and I am proud to have smashed my fundraising target of £25,000, with the fundraising finale Yorkshire Gin Night still to go on 28th June.

Ch g Night Of Thunder (IRE) - Mon Bijou (IRE) (Green Desert (USA))

Owner: James Ferguson

Trainer: James Ferguson

6 11-7

Jockey: Hermione Drummond Moray

Form: 4087/

Breeder: Albert Conneally

It is a sad reality that cancer touches our lives in one way or another and I was inspired to sign up for this challenge so that I could make a positive difference and support this life-changing cause.

Although I have ridden my whole life, I had never sat on a racehorse, but decided to take up the challenge because this is such a good cause and I truly believe we can help others battling this awful disease. Since signing up for this challenge, I lost my father, and although not to cancer, the Macmillan nurses were still able to support him during the final days of his life and they have also been an enormous support to my mother since. I will be forever grateful to these nurses for their constant care and compassion they showed to not only my father, but my whole family.

3 Gone in Sixty

7 11-7

Jockey: Pippa Harvey Form: 257-53

Breeder: Jeremy Gompertz

Macmillan are an amazing charity that help people in so many different ways , I wanted to do what I could to help raise funds. I sadly lost my Grandpop Richard Mattson and my aunt Andrea Bishop to cancer. When my father was diagnosed it gave me even more drive to do what I could to support Macmillan Cancer Support. It has been really hard work but I have enjoyed the challenge and don’t really want it to end. It has been an honour and a pleasure to be given this opportunity and to exceed my fundraising goals is a real bonus.

On the 16th June 2016, at only 55 years old, I lost my beloved father to pancreatic cancer. He volunteered for trial treatment soon after his diagnosis, in the hope he could help others have a better chance of recovery in the future. Despite its failures to restore his health, I have always been so proud of him for this and hope that by taking part in this years Macmillan race I can also help others receive the care and support provided by Macmillan Cancer Support. Racing at York Racecourse is also particularly special, as in 2023, we also lost my granny to cancer. She was an avid supporter of racing and lived in York her entire life. I race in their memory and hope to have their strength and courage behind me the whole way.

I am riding in the race in memory of my Dad, Les, who sadly lost a short battle to cancer in 2016. He was an avid horse racing fan! Taking part has given me the opportunity to say ‘Thank you’ to Macmillan for the amazing work they do by raising as much money as I can. The experience has been beyond what I could have imagined, and I am extremely grateful to Tim, his family and all of his team, my sponsors and to everyone who has taken part in the fundraising events over the last few months.

Macmillan Cancer Support is an amazing charity which helps so many people affected by cancer. I am humbled to be a part of this race, so I can raise money for Macmillan My Grandma passed away from bowel cancer and my mother-in-law fortunately survived breast cancer, but knowing Macmillan is available to help people navigate through a cancer diagnosis is a huge comfort and support. I am proud to contribute to their voluntary efforts and what better way than to have such an amazing experience, riding at York racecourse!

A number of close friends have been hit with cancer recently, and I sadly lost my grandfather, Mike, to a brain tumor. This ride is for them. Since childhood, I’ve enjoyed days at York Racecourse, never dreaming that one day, I’d be racing here myself. Now, the charity race has given me this incredible opportunity to step into the racing world with Ben Haslam Racing, learning to ride racehorses, all while championing an amazing cause. This journey has been both challenging and exhilarating, and I couldn’t have done it without the unwavering support of my friends, family, and sponsors. Thank you all for your incredible generosity and encouragement!

Macmillan Cancer Support has been such a fantastic support to my family and friends over the last few years. This was the perfect opportunity to try to give something back to an incredible charity that has been there for us in our darkest days Cancer reminds us how fragile life is and that we must ‘seize the day’. What a challenge this is to do just that whilst raising as much money as possible for a charity that has helped so many.

York is my family’s local course and is one of the most prestigious courses in the country I have always loved attending multiple annual meetings. The Macmillan race is something I have aspired to participate in for numerous years, not only because I will be riding on ‘home turf’, but has combined fundraising for a charity that has helped so many undertaking cancer treatment. We all, sadly, have close affiliations with those undergoing current treatment, have lost loved ones to the dreadful disease and are realistic that at some point it will affect friends, family or colleagues going forward. I lost my aunt to pancreatic cancer in 2016 and Macmillan were an incredible support to her until the bitter end. The race is a chance to give something back as a thank you and achieve a personal goal in her memory.

Trainer: Jedd O’Keeffe

I lost my Dad when I was 13, my Mum 1.5yrs ago, my later Dad 8 years ago & recently my father-in-law; all through an association with Cancer. The advice & more importantly the empathy we all received from Macmillan was absolute, so I’m doing this for Reg, Lilly, Ron & Tom plus my Grandad who all followed racing with such zest. I know they’ll be riding the last 2 furlongs with me, shouting & waving their arms about madly in Heaven.

The first race is a competitive handicap for female amateur riders. Such races are designed for close competition, so the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights.

The best on past performances will be the highest rated horse, being Andaleep here and so will carry most weight.

This is the richest race in the land for these amateur jockeys, however as such they can’t share the cash, so instead the winner will receive her weight in Lanson champagne

Benefitting from a 15lb weight-for-age allowance, STAR JASMINE is a serious contender on these terms and is suggested as the first one to consider in a highly competitive renewal of this prestigious contest. Piecederesistance, an excellent second over C&D off 1lb lower on his seasonal debut last month, also rates a key player. Arrange, fourth in that race, appeals for a place, while Lord Melbourne, Whimsy and Andaleep are also shortlisted.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable day to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.

The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.

FAQS

Is there accessible and blue badge parking?

Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses? Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection.. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.

Can I bring a wheelchair?

Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted.

Can I bring somebody to help?

Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.

Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?

Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.

What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?

Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.

Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?

Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.

Wheelchair height betting?

Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.

Can I bring my assistance dog?

Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome.

There was one more thing?

Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.

Examples of viewing platforms both around the Parade Ring and trackside

TOP TRAINER AT YORK AWARD

The Championship will be determined by the number of winners recorded and in the event of a tie, placed efforts will prove the deciding factor. The winner will receive the coveted Charles Clinkard Trophy and a smart pair of shoes plus £2,500 for the stable to share and a Christmas Party here at York in December.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Prize Money: £30,000

Age: 3+

Stalls: Farside

Again, a handicap, this time seeking equal competition by being amongst horses aged three and above. While the last race was for good horses rated up to 90, this race is for those a rated up to 95 Those closer to the top will carry more weight; In this instance it’s Bear Force One and that carries the heaviest burden. So, pit your wits against the handicapper – if you need some help look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, look how Yanifer is one that carries both consonants.

LAST YEAR’S RACE

Winner: WILD LION

Trainer: Saeed bin Suroor

There was an intriguing battle between Wild Lion and Gweedore but it was the former who came out on top by half-a-length.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

WOVEN is a highly consistent type for a race of this nature and, perhaps more crucially, he is also a previous C&D winner back over this trip for the first time this season. There are dangers aplenty, with the likes of Yanifer, New Image and Our Havana all capable of being on the premises. However, the class-dropping Aalto is feared most and can go well from a potentially lenient mark if dropping back from a mile isn’t an issue

This season sees the latest staging of the famous race as part of a an extensive partnership with Leeds-based Sky Bet.

York Racecourse and its longstanding partner are committed to both cherishing and yet developing the track’s most famous race.

Today sees the next instalment of a series entitled the “Race To The Ebor” which includes four high-class staying contests, including an Irish race held at The Curragh. The four races nominated for the “Race To The Ebor” are:

Sky Bet Melrose Handicap (3YO only)

York - 1m 6f

Saturday 26 August 2023

Sky Bet Jorvik Handicap (4YO+)

York - 1m 4f

Wednesday 15 May 2024

Sky Bet Stakes (Handicap, 4YO+)

The Curragh - 1m 6f

Wednesday 5 June 2024

Sky Bet Ebor (Handicap 4YO+)

York - 1m 6f

Saturday 24 August 2024

Sky Bet Grand Cup (Listed, 4YO+)

York - 1m 6f

Saturday 15 June 2024

The winners of the four races above will be guaranteed a start position in the Sky Bet Ebor of 2024 provided they are entered and confirmed in the normal way. In a further boost to connections, if these horses run in the Sky Bet Ebor 2024 and fail to finish in the top eight places, they will have their entry fee to the race (worth £5,000) refunded, the top eight receive £5,000 or more in prize money.

In the event that any of the “Race To The Ebor” winners were set to carry the lowest weight in the Sky Bet Ebor, that horse’s weight would be raised to the equivalent of the lowest-weighted horse that was set to run through the established entry process.

To complement this initiative York Racecourse invested in Britain’s largest set of starting stalls, able to accommodate 22 runners, an increase of two participants on the 2018 configuration. After his success in the Sky Bet Melrose last August, we know that Middle Earth already has a “golden ticket”. The next to have secured a spot in the Ebor is Crystal Delight, the winner of the Sky Bet Jorvik Handicap. Most recently, Jessica Harrington is hoping to follow up the Curragh victory from Saturn. One final bay awaits....

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Relentless Voyager is back at this level after a comfortable success in handicap company at Epsom on Derby day and another bold showing is highly likely if he takes the additional two furlongs in his stride However, Klondike and REAL DREAM both have the more proven stamina and while each holds previous course experience, the latter has actually won over the trip and can kick on after a solid runner-up effort at Newmarket, where Relentless Voyager was third.

THE PLAN IS ON TRACK

Southern End Development

Regular visitors to the Knavesmire will have seen the ongoing investment in the facilities for horses, participants and racegoers at York. This commitment to improve the experience of racing at York continues with the focus being the area that lies to the south of the Knavesmire Stand and behind the Bustardthorpe Stand.

As you can see a multi-million pound project to improve this area for Grandstand & Paddock racegoers is already well underway

The Roberto Pavilion is open for this meeting, providing a fast - serve bar, a fish & chip shop and a cocktail/Pimms bar Plus, tote & William Hill outlets.

By the time of the Sky Bet Ebor Festival in August, the Churchill Tyres Lawn and Canopy will be a great spot to relax and enjoy the food outlets and improved Theakston Bar that will flank it. A state of the art William Hill betting shop will reopen, with a new block of toilets.

In keeping with the Green Knavesmire 300 commitment, a host of sustainability features have been embedded; a living roof, rainwater harvesting and solar panels being examples. That is why there are a few changes to the Southern End today. If you are looking for a pint of Ebor IPA, you can now find it on the Dayjur Bar on the mezzanine floor of the Knavesmire Stand.

Architect impressions of the planned improvements 50

THE HIGHLIGHTS ARE:

• Refurbishing the structure of the 1913 Bustardthorpe Stand viewing steppings, open for use today.

• A new, single storey, fast serve Roberto Pavilion that includes a fast- serve bar, a fish & chip shop as well as a Pimms/Cocktail bar. Open for use today.

• Replacing and extending the existing single-storey extension to the rear of the Bustardthorpe Stand creating a new, bigger Theakston Bar and William Hill betting shop.

• Creating two new racegoer lawns with an overarching canopy similar to that covering the John Carr Terrace.

• Additional toilet, catering and betting facilities.

• Improved arrival experience, including feature gates that remember owner-breeder, Reg Bond and improved accessibility.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Woodhay Wonder completed a four-timer at her beloved Newmarket last month and must be respected raised a further 5lb in the ratings, but Richard Fahey has his string in fine fettle and ZIGGY’S CONDOR is preferred. The son of Havana Grey was reeled in late on over 7f here last time and a drop in trip is sure to suit on that evidence. Elmonjed finished behind the selection in sixth that day, but the fact he was sent off 6/4 favourite would suggest he is one to keep on side

Reg Griffin (1929-2008)

Founder and organiser of Charity Day 1971-2008

Born in Liverpool on Valentine’s Day in 1929, the son of a railway guard, Reg left school seemingly destined for a career as a surveyor. However, having been captivated by walking the Grand National course aged just five, racing was always his first love and, after National Service, he began to convert dreams into reality.

Griffin joined Phil Bull at Timeform in 1957, following spells as secretary/assistant to Jack Fawcus at Middleham and Arthur Budgett at Whatcombe. Ten years later, he became managing director and, thirty-two years on from that, chairman, a position he retained until formally retiring in November, 2007.

In 1970, Noel Nettleship, then Doncaster racecourse manager, forwarded a letter to Phil Bull from a Mrs Irene Hunt, regional organiser for the National Society for Cancer Relief. Mrs Hunt, based in Sheffield, was aware that a charity race meeting had been organised at Ascot and was hoping someone might do the same in the North. Bull passed the letter to Reg- and, as the old saying goes, what followed became history.

Reg agreed to help, provided no one interfered. Having persuaded the Jockey Club to grant a fixture to a commercial firm for the first time (at Doncaster in ‘71), he then secured sponsorship totalling £60,000 for a sevenrace card. At the time, this was the richest one-day meeting ever staged in Britain and the first at which every event was broadcast live on national radio. It also received extensive television coverage on ITV, so today the wheel comes full circle.

watching

Come the day, the Queen, making her first appearance at Town Moor for fifteen years, watched her colt Charlton, named in honour of the World Cup winning football brothers, Bobby and Jack, land the featured William Hill Gold Trophy.

The following year, the Jockey Club refused to help, telling Reg that he must find an existing programme. Thanks to the late Charles Halifax (father of the current Earl, Ernie), the meeting was moved to a Saturday at York in mid-June, where it has remained ever since.

Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II made her first showing 5

Due to a whole host of loyal supporters, many of whom are present today, the race day, which has so far raised over £7.5 million, continues. Today's 8th race, run since 2011 in Reg's honour, was actually won in 2010 by a horse named after him - the name, Sir Reginald, what else!

Age: 2

Stalls: Centre

This race is run over six furlongs, which is one of the shortest distances for thoroughbreds, so these horses will probably end up running over a mile next year when they are three-year-olds.

All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock.

Down to your choice of the two “ps”, pedigree or pin.

U Sure Do, touched off at odds of 125/1 on his Haydock debut, appeals as a leading contender with improvement on the cards, but SHAMAL WIND gets the vote. Related to a host of smart individuals, most notably dual Group 1 scorer Dream Of Dreams, Hugo Palmer’s newcomer looks the type to do well this season and it would come as no surprise were he to make an immediate impact. Karl Burke is doubly represented with Tiger Mask and Cracking Man, who both merit respect.

YORK TO ASCOT LINKED IN HISTORY

AND QUALITY

Approaching twenty years since its visit, but the links between York and the Royal Meeting continue to be strong. Here, we look at a few highlights…

SPRINTING

History shows us: Battaash as the star of the modern era, with his final win at York coming in the Coolmore Nunthorpe in 2020 having already landed the fastest contest in Berkshire. While 2015 Group 1 Platinum Jubilee Stakes winner, Twilight Son, took victory in the Charity Sprint here in the same year Just last year, Bradsell took the then G1 Kings Stand Stakes, having won his first race on the Knavesmire. Serial York heroine, Highfield Princess, followed him close home

The week ahead: Newly minted as the G1 King Charles III, the opening day sprint is the target for Big Evs, successful in the Listed Westow Stakes here last month. Another York winner, Regional, will be hoping to give local handler Ed Bethell another day to remember.

Lake Forest, who took the G2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack last year, is among a host of now three-year-olds with York form who look set for the G1 Commonwealth Cup.

JUVENILES

History shows us: Some of the best two-year-olds are sent to York and the victory of Bradsell in the 2022 EBF Restricted Novice Stakes, before Archie Watson’s colt landed the Group 1 One Kings Stand Stakes, makes the point. The week ahead: In 2022, Karl Burke took the Steve Parkin-owned Dramatised to Berkshire to win the Queen Mary In 2024 he returns with a juvenile colt, as Andesite in the same colours, targets the Coventry Stakes, after his Novice Stakes victory at York.

STAYERS

History shows us: We might never see a stayer like the great Stradivarius, who claimed six races on the Knavesmire, to go with his three Gold Cups at Royal Ascot. The week ahead: A winner of the Sky Bet Melrose; Coltrane is going in search of this year’s Gold Cup

Potentially joined by not just one but two former winners of the Sky Bet Ebor itself in Trawlerman (2022) & Absurde (2023) Stradivarius

Big Evs
62

MIDDLE DISTANCE

History shows us: In 2023, the signposts were rather reversed with two Pattern Race scorers in Berkshire heading up to York to land Group One prizes in August. Mostahdaf claimed the impressive Prince of Wales’s Stakes and Juddmonte International double, whilst Warm Heart progressed from the Ribblesdale to take the Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks.

Continuous

The week ahead: Aidan O’Brien has a terrific record at both venues, with Continuous in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes part of a strong party, the colt landed the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur in his Classic season.

After a strong run in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante, the Godolphin trained Ancient Wisdom has to have an interest in the “Ascot Derby” the G2 King Edward V11 Stakes.

PICK ME AN OUTSIDER

A horse stepping up to Group One company can provide betting market value Consider Devoted Queen who won in Listed company for Charlie Appleby over the Dante Festival, she heads up to the G1 Coronation Stakes.

THE HANDICAPS

History shows us: Picking handicap winners is never easy however the Knavesmire can be an indicator.

The week ahead: Ten times champion trainer on the Knavesmire , Richard Fahey, sends Strike Red to the Wokingham. If you were here to see him take the 2022 version of the Coral Sprint Trophy, then consider the Ascot price. A feature handicap winner at the Dante Festival, Botanical, flies the flag in the Wolferton.

THE OTHER WAY AROUND

A strong cast list but as a leading man, the mighty Frankel won the Queen Anne two months before his career-defining triumph in the Juddmonte International. In 2023, we saw Mostadhaf follow up a win at the Royal Meeting so notebooks and iPads at the ready

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): R Fahey (14 wins from 55 runners, 25%) runs CISCO DISCO and NO NAY NICKI

Weightwatcher: BARLEY won off a handicap mark of 86, his rating is now down 11lb to 75.

Fancy That: T Easterby won this race in 2018 and 2019 The stable runs BARLEY and POET’S DAWN today. Longest Traveller: MOSTAWAA trained by H Main, Wantage, 195 miles.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 13th June

KNAVESMIRE TIP

A typically competitive big-field handicap sees a chance taken on HALE END, who won more cosily than the one-length winning margin may suggest over 1m at Thirsk and a repeat of that effort could see him defy a 4lb rise in the ratings. His stable companion Boy Douglas (second) reopposes after confirming the form when scoring subsequently over 1m at Ayr earlier this month and he appears likely to challenge once more. John Chard Vc is also of interest

RACE FACTS & STATISTICS

THE TALE OF THE CLOCK

Racing Post Standard Time: 1m 10s

Course Record: 1m 8.23s by Mince (09-Sep-12)

All times are based where possible on the corresponding race over the last seven years

Leading course trainer (19-24): R Fahey (30 wins from 452 runners, 7%) runs INTERNATIONAL GIRL, ROCK OPERA and THE RIDLER

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): R Fahey (14 wins from 55 runners, 25%)

ROCK OPERA and THE RIDLER

Fancy That: D O’Meara won this race in 2014 and 2015. The stable runs MUSCIKA today. Longest Traveller: TIRIAC trained by J Channon, West Ilsley, 199 miles.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 13th June

KNAVESMIRE TIP

MUSCIKA was only beaten three-quarters of a length into third at Wolverhampton on his latest appearance and this consistent veteran can stake another bold claim off the same mark. Lucky Man is feared most off an unaltered rating after his second at Thirsk on his seasonal reappearance, while Holkham Bay isn’t easily ruled out and is fancied to turn the tables on his hat-trick seeking C&D conqueror Tiriac on 1lb better terms.
