A Tribute to Forry When we lost Forrest J. Ackerman in late 2008, we lost one of our own. Often cited as being the “Father of Sci-Fi,” (although some might dispute this, most agree), Mr. Ackerman was, of course, best known as editor of the original Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine. Many a young vampire or vampiress cut their teeth to the often-corny prose of FJA. To young kids growing up across America, the striking covers and the big monster photos inside made a perfect complement to Ackerman’s witty descriptions, captions. It was very obvious that here was a man who truly enjoyed the genre. FJA made it sound like he had put together that monthly issue of FM just for you. He connected one-on-one with so many readers. Over time, he collected literally tons of science fiction and monster-related items, original props, stills, posters, books, magazines you name it, he had it. Many a fan and collector was given an audience at FJA’s “Ackermansion” to view, or perhaps purchase a prized collectible. Nobody left unimpressed. And more than one account of a visit upheld the legend of the unassuming character that Mr. Ackerman truly was. Can you imagine a total stranger showing up at your door to see your prized movie poster collection and allowing them to have ‘run of the house’
I am a collector, NOT a dealer. I will pay TOP DOLLAR for your posters.
PLEASE CALL ME!
Here’s the June, 1961 issue of ‘Famous Monsters of Filmland’ that first haunted Dr. V. He saw the tremendous Basil Gogo image of the Werewolf staring right at him... and knew the only way to avoid the ‘Curse’ was to buy the mag. He never looked back!
Yet, that was Forry. In this issue, we present our own small tribute to a man many of us grew up reading. Several of our mainstay MCW’ers (Paul Parla, Deborah Painter, Nathalie Yafet and of course, Dr. V, have assembled their own memories of FJA. I hope you’ll enjoy their heartfelt tributes.

ay Harryhausen is regarded as one of cinema’s premier visual effects artists. Specializing in stop motion animation, Ray was first inspired by the classic King Kong in 1933 to begin his own experiments with the process. He went on to create many fantastic creatures and effects for modern fantasy and science fiction classics, and the first portion of his remarkable feature film career is covered in this volume: Mighty Joe Young (1949), The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms (1953), It Came From Beneath the Sea (1955), The Animal World (1956), Earth vs. the Flying Saucers (1956), 20 Million Miles to Earth (1957), and The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958). Compiled and written over the past ten years with Ray Harryhausen’s full cooperation, Volume 2 of this definitive career biography includes exclusive interviews with Ray and his colleagues, including producer Charles H. Schneer, director Nathan Juran, actors Kerwin Mathews, Paul Christian, Paula Raymond and Kathryn Grant, renowned science fiction author Ray Bradbury, author and archivist Forrest J Ackerman, cinematographer Wilkie Cooper, producer Hal Chester, screenwriter Bernard Gordon, stunt choreographer Enzo Musumeci-Greco, film historian Leslie Halliwell, author Henry Slesar, and many more.
Ray Harryhausen – Master of the Majicks Vol. 2 features: • 1000+ images from numerous private collections, including hundreds of rare photographs (many never before published) • Advertising art from different countries • Film Reviews, Story Synopses, comprehensive Cast and Crew credits • Glossary of technical terms • Trivia & obscure facts and figures • Foreword by Academy Award® nominated visual effects artist Jim Danforth (The 7 Faces of Dr. Lao, When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth and others) • 370 pages, hardcover with dust jacket Ray Harryhausen (to author Mike Hankin): “My God! This is better than our book! You can see in every page the love and care you have put into this book. It really is superb!” Leonard Maltin says: “One of the most elaborate publishing ventures of 2008 was Ray Harryhausen Master of the Majicks Vol. 2 by Mike Hankin. I often receive review copies of books but I was happy to shell out my own hard-earned dollars for this labor of love, a meticulous survey of Ray’s life and career.”

THE TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN’ BACK..... THE TOP 10 OLD DEPRESSION FILMS FOR THE NEW DEPRESSION by Paul Brenner • FilmCritic.com As Barack Obama steps in and tries to rescue the country from itself, practically every pundit worth his salt is equating Obama with Franklin Roosevelt, who took over the reins of government at the height of the Depression in the 1930s and ultimately turned the country around (although it took World War II to really set things straight). But things are different now in our New Depression era – there are no breadlines because the bakeries have closed and no soup kitchens because the soup costs too much to make. There are similarities, however: The movies of the mid-1930s for example. Watching them during these troubling times gives you great insight -- not to the Depression era of the 1930s but to the Depression era of 2009. Here’s our list of the best movies of 2009... made in the ‘30s:
1. Gabriel Over the White House (La Cava, 1933) One of the biggest hits of 1933 but relegated to the bowels of obscurity today, Gregory La Cava’s totalitarian fantasy is just the thing for Barack Obama to look at to give him some cutting edge ideas on the most effective ways to run a country in the grip of a new Depression. Walter Huston plays a political hack elected as President (sound familiar?) who could care less about rampant unemployment, housing foreclosures, mass starvation, and political corruption until a car accident renders him senseless and comatose. In this vegetative state, Huston is visited by the angel Gabriel and comes out of his coma infused with a messianic zeal to right the wrongs of the body politic. So when he asks Congress for a $4 billion stimulus package (money was worth more back then) “to stimulate buying power” and is refused, Huston dissolves Congress, declares martial law, and sets up a benevolent fascist dictatorship to do the work that needs to be done. If Obama sees this film and acts upon it, 2009 should be a very interesting year. 2. Duck Soup (McCarey, 1933) Since the government of the United States looks like it is being run by the Marx brothers, you may as well get to the source, the anarchic and subversive
Marx brothers’ political romp Duck Soup. A few years ago at a Senate hearing investigating the Iraq War, a Senator commented on the Bush administration’s disregard for the facts by actually quoting Chico in Duck Soup: “Who ya gonna believe? Me or your own eyes?” Here, Groucho plays a corrupt political hack running the government of Freedonia into the ground. When things get bad, he suckers the nation into his way of thinking by toting out patriotism. Grab a gun and end the economic downturn. Sound familiar? Freedom fries, anyone?
3. American Madness (Capra, 1932) Frank Capra’s first Capra-esque ode to miraculous optimism is, like all Capra films, mostly about the pessimism inherent in us all. Walter Huston plays populist bank president Thomas Dickson, a man who believes in micro-credit, lending money to people who need it in a 1930s version of the Grameen Bank. But when Dickson’s fat cat board of directors get wind of a bank loss, they try to wrest control of the operation from Dickson, and all hell breaks loose, culminating in Dickson’s beloved depositors going into riot mode to withdraw their funds. Dickson’s defense of his business practices to the venal bank CEOs and his cry for the banks to stop hoarding money could have been transcribed from a contemporary Senate committee hearing... only in today’s climate there is no Dickson to speak on the behalf of the poor depositors who have lost their credit and their dignity.
4. Dinner at Eight (Cukor, 1933) George Cukor directed this film version of the George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber comedy at the height of the Depression in 1933, the whole shebang shot in Hollywood while at the same
time a special session of Congress in Washington was hammering out the New Deal relief legislation. Status seeker Millicent Jordan (Billie Burke) is throwing a dinner party for a collection of rich hoi polloi (Marie Dressler, Wallace Berry, Jean Harlow, Lionel Barrymore, John Barrymore) but, like a group of AIG executives, they are all a bunch of crooks and phonies. Give MGM credit for fashioning an all-star film of wit and high comedy about bankruptcy, ill health, economic ruin, and suicide.
5. Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (Capra, 1936) It took Frank Capra to have a nervous breakdown in order to hatch this tale of pure American schmaltz concerning Longfellow Deeds (Gary Cooper), a greeting card writer from the small town of Mandrake Falls, who inherits $20 million and, at the behest of a group of nefarious lawyers and businessmen, heads to The Big City, where he is mocked and humiliated and, after an unemployed man breaks into his mansion and threatens his life, decides to give away his fortune to the poor rather than provide a bailout to big business interests. As he explains, “It like I’m out there in a big boat and I see one fellow in a rowboat who’s tired of rowing and wants a free ride, and another fellow who’s drowning. Who would you expect me to rescue? Mr Cedar -- who’s just tired of rowing and wants a free ride? Or those men out there who are drowning? Any ten year old child will give you an answer to that.” Of course, Deeds is then locked up in the mental ward and dubbed screwy. 6. The Gold Diggers of 1933 (LeRoy and Berkeley, 1933) Producer Ned Sparks tries to convince actress Aline MacMahon to get on board his ramshackle Broadway musical production by telling her about the theme of the show: “The gay side, the hard-boiled side, the cynical and funny side of the Depression. I’ll make ‘em laugh at you starving to death, honey. It’ll be funniest thing you ever did.” Busby Berkeley’s lunatic and bitter phantasmagoria could certainly be interpolated to the massive closures of Broadway shows
at the start of 2009 and the collapse of arts funding for theaters nationwide. Berkeley ends his bubbly tribute to economic collapse with the startling “Remember My Forgotten Man” production number, featuring army veterans without jobs, suicidal wives, and bread lines -- with the only person managing to hold a job being the local whore (Joan Blondell). Even the opening number “We’re in the Money” ends abruptly with a sheriff busting into the dance and foreclosing on the production.
7. The Grapes of Wrath (Ford, 1939) Dust bowl foreclosures, starving families, desperate people searching for their do-re-mi. 2009 ain’t the Dust Bowl times, thank God, but who knows what the future holds: For one thing, California is no longer the Garden of Eden. Although John Ford’s film came out at the end of the Depression era, the values still hold up in today’s era of tanking real estate prices. Muley Graves’ unrequited desire to shoot somebody when told to vacate his home by a finance company stooge is probably being played out today in the locked doorways of Las Vegas condos and Florida real estate developments. The ghost of Tom Joad lives on. 8. Heroes For Sale (Wellman, 1933) Bleak cynicism is writ large in William Wellman’s dark Depression nightmare. Richard Barthemess in Tom Holmes, a war hero whose heroism is stolen from him by a pal who takes all the credit. Tom ends up in a hospital where he becomes addicted to morphine, racking up a $200 a day habit. He is sent to a drug farm to dry out, gets a job in a laundry, is arrested for inciting a riot, and ends up a bum on a freight train. When Tom gets hold of money, he

wants to share it with the poor workers and is slapped down for his troubles and most of the people he runs across stab him in the back. Tom’s innocence becomes repellent -- especially when he comes across a reformed Communist. “You used to hate the capitalists,” Tom remarks. “That was before I made money” is the retort. All you folks at Walter Reed take heed.

9. Hallelujah I’m a Bum (Milestone, 1933) Lewis Milestone directed this subversive Rodgers and Hart musical, written by the cynical pen of Ben Hecht and delivered in rhyming dialogue. This Communist allegory concerns an army of homeless people who happily live off the fruits of nature in Central Park post-capitalism with the philosophy of “don’t worry, be happy.” Al Jolson plays a roving bum who is the mayor of the homeless and silent film comedy star Harry Langdon is a rabid Trotskyite garbage man. You can’t get more incendiary than an Eisensteinian montage of poverty set to the tune of “America” or a pre-Godard tracking shot of bank customers inside a gigantic bank edifice of the empyrean realm. You happy hoboes sing, “Hallelujah, I’m a Bum” again.
10. Modern Times (Chaplin, 1936) Chaplin goes nuts on an assembly line, grapples for food to keep from starving, can’t hold a job, and gets arrested for being a Communist ring leader. The best time he has is when he’s in jail and is disappointed when he has to leave. He takes up with a street urchin (Paulette Goddard), and they create an ersatz nuclear family in a shotgun shack. The way things are going we should all look forward to this. But we should also look forward to the hope Chaplin offers. With despair all around, we need each other more than ever. When Chaplin walks into the sunrise at the end of Modern Times, for the first time in the closing scene that ends most of his films, he is no longer alone at the fade out. Now he has someone with him.
Marilyn Stars in Bonhams & Buttefields December Auction Fans and collectors of entertainment memorabilia vied for desirable film, rock and television treasures Sunday (21 December 2008) in Los Angeles, spending more than $635,000 at Bonhams & Butterfields’ Sunset Blvd. salesroom for Marilyn Monroe collectibles, classic animation art, props and costumes. Marilyn Monroe’s US Department of Defense I.D. card, issued in 1954 and bearing her black & white image, her signature as Norma Jean DiMaggio, as well as her fingerprints on a laminated government card, took top billing during the sale, bringing $57,000. A desirable collectible to any fan, it detailed her personal stats - height: 5’5 ½”; weight: 118lbs; hair: blonde; eyes: blue and birth: 1June26. The card was estimated at $3/5,000. According to Margaret Barrett, Bonhams & Butterfields’ Director of Entertainment Memorabilia sales, “This ID card turned out to be a very desirable item and Bonhams & Butterfields is thrilled that we were able to offer such a special piece to our valued Marilyn Monroe collectors.” Another exciting lot was an unfinished handwritten letter from Monroe, written around 1964 to DiMaggio, which fuels speculation among Monroe scholars that she may have had intentions to reconcile with the baseball great. The letter sold for three times its estimate, bringing $36,000. Other Monroe lots attracting strong bids within the crowded salesroom and from bidders participating via telephone included black & white photos -- some never before seen, some studio publicity photos, and others featuring 1950s-60s wardrobe and make-up photos. An enormous collection of black & white stills from early television, from 194959, which featured as many as 1,300 glossy vintage prints of Desi and Lucy, George and Gracie, the Marx Brothers, Elvis Presley and Jack Benny, among many others, sold for $12,000. Phil Silver’s Emmy Award®,
presented in 1956 for “Best Series - Half Hour or Less,” sold for $6,000. A desirable collection of original material from the Hollywood celebrity haunt The Brown Derby was offered on the auctioneer’s menu Sunday - top lots included a 1920s wooden wall decoration in the form of a derby hat (sold for $1,300), a Brown Derby brass wall sconce (sold for $2,040) and an original red brick laid during the building of the Wilshire Blvd location in 1926. The brick bears a brass plaque and was retrieved during the 1980 destruction of the site; estimated at $50/75, it sold for $780. A three-foot tall circa 1950s carved maple Brown Derby mirror brought $6,600. Vintage film posters, lobby cards and production stills found buyers, as did two costume pieces from Gone With the Wind. A Vivien Leigh fitted blouse brought $9,000 and the same price was paid for a Cammie King costume from the 1939 classic. King portrayed the character Bonnie Blue Butler, Scarlett’s daughter. A Touchstone Pictures prop of the Mayor’s hearse from the spooky and spectacular 1993 hit Nightmare Before Christmas sold for $30,000. The 14-inch high and 33-inch long wooden hearse is decorated with rubber textured curtains and a black cat hood ornament. The auction closed with familiar and desirable animation art - with highlights including favorite Disney films. A celluloid depicting the beloved dwarfs of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, 1937, doubled its estimate to sell for $7,200. A group of drawings detailing Geppetto’s workshop in 1940’s Pinocchio brought $10,800 while a Walt Disneysigned celluloid depicting Jiminy Cricket introducing himself to the puppet brought to life by the Blue Fairy sold for $15,600. Several lots comprising cels and drawings from 1940’s Fantasia sold strong: six Fantasia preliminary thumbnails brought $6,000; a pencil on paper storyboard brought more than five times its estimate, selling for $5,100; and a set of eight thumbnail sketches from the ‘Night on Bald Mountain’ sequence sold for $6,600. A pair of 1950s pen and ink Peanuts comic strips sold above estimate. An early example of the popular Charles Shultz characters was dated October 1954, signed by Shultz and depicting Charlie Brown and Lucy (sold for $19,200). From March of 1959, a four-panel strip depicts Linus challenging his sister Lucy to a boxing match. The lot sold after Bonhams’ bidders sparred, at the final bell, the lot brought $24,000 (est. $7/9,000). Entertainment Memorabilia and Animation Art are offered twice each year by Bonhams & Butterfields. The illustrated auction catalog from this sale will remain online at www.bonhams.com/us. For more information on the specialty dept., please visit: www.bonhams.com/entertainment.
on Saturday, January 24, at the Academy’s Fourth Floor Gallery in Beverly Hills. Admission is free. The exhibition will illuminate Fairbanks’s multifaceted life as a movie star, studio founder, philanthropist and civic leader through film clips, movie posters, props, costumes, original documents and stunning photographic imagery. The exhibition spans from his earliest days in silent films through his transition into talkies, delves into his famous marriage to Mary Pickford and spotlights his friendships with such fellow Hollywood legends as Charlie Chaplin. In the 1920s, Fairbanks’s success in such films as “The Mask of Zorro,” “The Thief of Bagdad,” “The Black Pirate” and “Douglas Fairbanks as The Gaucho” sealed his action-hero status around the world. In addition to being regarded as one of silent Hollywood’s greatest stars, Fairbanks also was one of its most respected citizens. He served as the Academy’s first president, was a founder of United Artists, and along with his wife Mary Pickford, was the first to be immortalized in the Grauman’s Chinese Theater footprint ceremony. Fairbanks’s enormous popularity and far-reaching success cemented his status as the first “King of Hollywood.” “Douglas Fairbanks: The First King of Hollywood” has been organized in conjunction with the publication of the Academy’s new book Douglas Fairbanks. Authored by Jeffrey Vance with Tony Maietta, with Robert Cushman as photographic editor, the book examines Fairbanks’s art and ventures behind his public persona, showcasing more than 200 photographs, some unseen for more than 75 years. Douglas Fairbanks is available for purchase wherever books are sold. The exhibition is presented in association with the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, whose collection includes a number of the artifacts that will be on display. “Douglas Fairbanks: The First King of Hollywood” will be open to the public through Sunday, April 19, in the Academy’s Fourth Floor Gallery, located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and weekends, noon to 6 p.m. Admission is free.

FORREST J ACKERMAN,
Famous Collector of Friends by Deborah Painter It was very difficult for me to read the New York Times obituary section on December 6, because it had a photo of someone I love very much and spent many a happy day with, Forrest J Ackerman, posed with some of the original science fiction movie and TV props he owned at one time. The obituary told that he died on December 4, 2008. It was a good obituary, probably the best one that I have seen on Forry to date, and pretty accurate. One thing which was stated, however, is not accurate except in the most cold and technical sense. It stated that he had no surviving relatives. It is true that he and his wife Wendy, who passed in 1990, had no offspring. But it is not true that he had no kin. All of us who were close friends were his kindred spirits, brothers, sisters, and sons and daughters. All of us who collect a movie poster from a Christopher Lee Dracula film or read a science fiction book about daring interstellar adventure or who see a science fiction movie about Time Travel, or who marvel over Vincent Price
as he gleefully attempts to slice another enemy from his “to-kill list” in The Pit and the Pendulum, or who are inspired to sculpt or to draw a movie monster or to direct a film or pen a book about some fine person or thing from the classic horror film world, or dream of the way the future is envisioned in a television show, or get a film star’s autograph, all of us are his kinfolk and kindred spirits. Forry Ackerman often said he picked the right pair of maternal grandparents. Born in 1916 in Los Angeles, he enjoyed being spoiled by grandparents George Wyman, architect of the Bradbury Building back in 1893, and his wife Belle. Munching on his Abba-zabas, little Forry went to plenty of movies with them. He sat enthralled by One Glorious Day starring Will Rogers and Lon Chaney Senior’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame. After 1926 Forry and his mom, dad and brother Alden moved to San Francisco. FJA decided in 1934 to move back to the movie capital of the world and stay with the grandparents while trying to obtain some sort of job
as a secretary or general assistant to a star. He loved to hang around the movie studios and he met his favorite star Marlene Dietrich. Forry eventually got a job with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. One of his tasks was to guard the Oscars back stage before they were handed out to the recipients. He recalled that it was 1939, the year the Academy Award for Best Effects went to The Rains Came. Forry was one of the founders of the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society, which was then a small group of teenagers and adults who read and wrote science fiction. When young he befriended a certain teenager named Ray Harryhausen, and you know how HE turned out! During his World War II career as a Sergeant in the Army, stationed at Fort MacArthur, Forry realized some acclaim for editing and writing for the wartime newspaper, The Bulletin/Alert. Out of two thousand military publications, it was annually judged second most popular while he was at the editorial helm. His connections with science
fiction writers would help him in his real career… being a literary agent. The Ackerman Science Fiction Agency agented short stories and novels and sold motion picture rights. If you ever saw the 1953 Hammer science fiction production Four Sided Triangle, keep in mind that this film, as well as This Island Earth, became realities because FJA acted as the agent for their original authors. He represented authors selling scripts to episodes of TV’s Science Fiction Theater and Four Star Theater. Mr. Ackerman got Ray Bradbury started and helped him along the way when he was young and broke and trying to support a family on his earnings as a writer. “Forry would buy books from my personal library. He didn’t want em’.” Bradbury said when honoring Forry at his 80th birthday party in 1996. “He bought them because I was broke. Later, when I had made it as a writer, I bought some of them back!” By 1958 Mr. Ackerman was also beginning to get very busy with editing Famous Monsters of Filmland for Warren

Publishing Company. Forry was required by his editor, James Warren, to write outside his area of interest for Warren’s Screen Thrills Illustrated and Wildest Westerns. Through his writing, agenting work and interviewing industry folk for Famous Monsters, Forry befriended practically everyone in the field of horror and science fiction film. Many of the producers invited him to do cameos in their films! Some of the artifacts Forrest J had in his personal museum were: the Pteranodon that attempted to fly off with Fay Wray in King Kong (RKO, 1933), a publicity poster for a 1920s film that never saw the light of day, Raymond Griffith’s fantasy film Get Off the Earth, a Cylon from the original Battlestar Galactica television series (Universal Television, 1978), the beaver hat and the false vampire teeth Lon Chaney, Senior wore in MGM’s 1927 film London After Midnight, and the ring worn by Boris Karloff in The Mummy (Universal, 1932). There was not one, but three Ackermansions. The first was on Sherbourne Drive in Los Angeles, the second was the largest and most famous, on Glendower Avenue, and the third was the small bungalow on Russell, not far from the Glendower Avenue address. I have framed on my wall a piece of paper FJA sent me. It has a sample of ghastly green shag carpet affixed to a list of famous people who had walked on it in the Glendower Avenue Ackermansion before he got some new carpeting. The list is so long that it would take up this entire article! Suffice to say that his friends include not only director Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings), but director John Landis (Weird Science, Beverly Hills Cop III), actress and dancer Carla Laemmle (the 1931 Dracula and the 1925 The Phantom of the Opera) and scripter George Clayton Johnson (1960’s Twilight Zone), among hundreds of luminaries. When just a tyke Forrest J wrote a letter to Carl Laemmle, President of Universal Pictures Corporation, asking for any unused film props or posters he may have available. After receiving 62 of these same kinds of letters, Laemmle wrote a memo to his secretary with the instruction, “Give this kid anything he wants”. All his life, Forry wrote. In addition to his first autobiographical effort, Amazing Forries, Mr. Monster’s Movie Gold, a dozen other books, and a plethora of short stories and anthologies, he also penned articles for Famous Monsters, regular columns for Nebula Science Fiction back in the 1950s and recent genre film magazines such as Scarlet Street, Scarlet the Film Magazine, Cult Movies and Argentina’s La Cosa: Cine Fantastico. He and his wife Wendayne translated the German Perry Rhodan science fiction series into English for Ace Books for many years. She translated the works of Karl Herbert Scheer, Walter Ernsting and Kurt Mahr. FJA spoke German, Italian, French, Spanish and Esperanto. That’s an invented language that many visionaries of the 1930s hoped would catch on as a language for world use. Forry invented the character “Vampirella”, a glamorous girl from the planet Drakulon where the rivers flow with blood instead of water.
Ray Harryhausen’s ‘Earth vs. the Flying Saucers’ models (left) and the model of the Golden Gate Bridge party dismantled by the giant octopus in ‘It Came From Beneath the Sea’ (right) were displayed for decades in Son of Ackermansion. (Photo Michael Ramsey)
Vampirella is still in vogue, with her own comic line. In 1996 Showtime aired the movie Vampirella, produced by Concorde-New Horizons and starring Talisa Soto. Forry even acted in the film as a dancer in a club and a teenaged boy named “Forry Ackerman” (David B. Katz) meets Vampirella soon after she arrives on Earth to fight the evil Vlad (Roger Daltrey) who has fled justice on Drakulon to hide out here. Bet you didn’t know that there was a teenaged character named Forry Ackerman in a movie! (The character does not look a bit like the real Forry at the age of 18, because the real Forry was much taller and more handsome.) FJA was the sort who would try new things. If someone asked him if he wanted to be in a movie, he said “Glad to do it”. If someone wanted him to do a foreword to a book on horror films, he was ready. And throughout all this he was eager to encourage others in the pursuits of their artistic goals. Forry didn’t just help a young Ray Bradbury. In 1979 an unknown kid by the name of Deborah Painter sent her first professional piece on dinosaur films to Famous Monsters of Filmland. Forry accepted it and assigned a dozen more articles from 1980 to 1997, and acted as a mentor every step of the way. I’m now a successful author and as a way to attempt to partly repay him I have been writing about Forry a lot these past ten years. He’s always a fascinating subject! not to get drunk, smoke or become part of the drug scene. He also offered an alternative: get interested in movies, movie history and science fiction. And do you know what? Forry was celebrated for it. He became the subject of many a film like The Sci Fi Boys and folks young and old would flock to his side at conventions and thank him for being there for them as the author of so many wonderful books and the editor of so many wonderful magazines. We need more people like Forrest J Ackerman…. millions more.

If you wish to see a list of some of his cameos and small roles, as well as his awards and other accomplishments, a fraction of them are cited at the end of this article. Forry contracted with L. A. Mayor Tom Bradley back in the 1980s to have a museum funded by the city for the bulk of his collection. This did not come to pass. FJA auctioned off some of the excess overflow in a Guernsey’s auction in the early 1990s. He had to sell his home, the “Ackermansion” on Glendower Avenue in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles in 2002 when mounting medical bills necessitated it, and he had to part with some of his collection, and unfortunately rather hurriedly. Mr. Ackerman moved to a smaller home a few blocks away and called it the Ackerminimansion. But just a couple of years after the sale of the Glendower Avenue home, life improved and he was able to endow the American Cinematheque on Hollywood Boulevard (the lovely old Grauman’s Egyptian Theatre) with money toward its operation and named some of the seats in honor of Ray Bradbury and even King Kong! In 2006 he spoke about the history of science fiction and his involvement in it, in the documentary Finding the Future (Anomalous Entertainment, LLC) “Mr. Sci Fi” enjoyed showing people around his Ackermansions and the Ackerminimansion. He enjoyed teaching them and seeing them enjoying themselves. No matter that the museum in his house got smaller over time as pieces went to the Science Fiction Museum at 5th Avenue in Seattle, Washington, or to other collectors, or to storage. He was home most Saturday afternoons to share his knowledge and experience. We were content to sit in clusters along side Forry’s chair and listen to all of his accounts of this star or that author, of this trip to visit Mary Shelley’s grave or that journey to Paris, France to see a museum where they had the beautiful costume used in the silent film L’Atlantide (Thalman et Cie, 1921) Everyone knows people who do things to “fit in” with the crowd even if what the crowd wants is against their better judgment. Forry urged his readers and fans

Relocating to California in 1983 was a special time for my wife Donna and I. Once our priorities were all set, we picked up the slack again and began feeding our ‘collection’ of science fictionhorror and fantasy posters, photos, autographs and monster magazines. Originally from New Jersey, I began my collection in 1971 at memorable places that housed memorable faces like, The Memory Shop (NYC) and Mark Ricci, Stephan Sally (NYC), Jerry Ohlinger ’s (NYC), Keir ’s Celebrity Photos (NYC), Movie Star News (NYC), Cinemabilia (NYC), among others. When it came to collecting monster mags, I would go to Prince Back Issues (NYC) and one of my favorite places and memories, The Passiac Book Store in Passaic, New Jersey and of course, to an old pal right in town, Alan Levine. From 1971 through 1976, I’d high tail it down to Miami (to chase the girls) and of course visit with Bruco Enterprises... walls oforiginal photos at 35 cents each (inflation was setting in!) and I mustnot forget my mail order ‘collecting’ with Luanne and Cleophus at Movie Poster Service in Oklahoma. When it came down solely to Famous Monsters Of Filmland, well, the memories get very special as my father and I would call theWarren Publishing Company in NYC on a weekday to ask if they were going to be open on Saturday. This was the late ‘60s – 1966 through 1969 – the man there would let us in, his name was Donato. Another woman (Ann-?) would get my requested issues as I waited at the counter looking at the Don Post masks and dreaming of one day, visiting with Forrest Ackerman in California. I remember the very smell of the place; that wonderful and irresistable fragrance of old paper, just like the Passiac Book store –heavenly. Fast fowarding to 1977... I flew out to California and visited the Ackermansion and finally met THE MAN....I was in 7th heaven..all that beautiful clutter was simply amazing!

A Tribute To FORREST J ACKERMAN The ‘REAL’ Expert by Paul Parla It was a world of difference from the Passiac Book Store or The Memory Shop where Mark Ricci would often call out to me, ‘Times up Paul..your spending too much time in the Sci-Fi drawers!’...but somehow it was all connected I was in the Ackermansion. Forrest, at that time, still had quality condition issues of Famous Monsters and Spacemen which I happily upgraded to near mint conditions. I convinced Forrest to sell me an absolute mint #1 FM he had on his desk; he was reluctant but did for $125. He was always so obliging and good natured. I never saw him mean
tempered, even when you could see he was tired of entertaining all his guests. he’d have us up into the living room to chat many times, and then down into the caverns and beyond into the underground room called, Bogey Land to have a look around. I purchased many original photos and a fair number of posters and FM back issues from Forrest in 1977 and in 1981 when I revisited the Ackermansion two years prior to moving to California. Forrest had the patience of a saint and I often wondered how he did it. He would always do his best to find time to

One early Saturday morning I called him asking if I could come by (I live just ‘over the hill’ from Griffith Park) to autograph #1 through #25 of Famous Monsters and my issues of Spacemen. He said, ‘Sure!’ I quickly went through Griffith Park, a right turn on Los Feliz Blvd and as I was passing Commonwealth, there was actress Julie Adams with her dogs –.this was around 1990. Always keeping a file of photos in my car, I asked the obvious, and Miss Adams said it was OK to go up to her house and wait; when she returned, she autographed my ‘Black Lagoon’ photos which later on, Ben Chapman also graced with his signature. I arrived a bit late at Forry’s but that was no problem; laid back Forry took my issues one by one and very neatly and slowly, autographed all 25 issues and my Spacemen. He placed each issue on his lap and beautifully autographed them. Forrest truly was and is the inspiration in so many ways for us all, fans, writers and historians, growing up and

collecting ‘back in the day’. He’s given the genre of classic sci-fi-horror and fantasy much deserved respect. It seems that anybody who is successful also has a legion of detractors, for whatever reason. Unfortunately, there is a clique of ‘experts’ who have been saying foul lies about everybody under the Sun, .including Forrest Ackerman. Not only are they lies, but the very core of these remarks come from a deep seeded jealousy and apparent psychosis; the more trash these haters spew, the more obvious it becomes. They seem bitter and can’t have much of a solid foothold in reality, that is quite evident. They have become foolishly, too full of themselves. Forrest Ackerman is indeed the Godfather of Sci-Fi and if there are any others out there who don’t think so or who have become too big for their breeches (outgrown their diapers) then they have been spending too much time on Metaluna..

There was a taxi stand in Oconomowoc which was just a little hole in the corner place which sold questionable magazines. In fact, the nuns at my Catholic grade school had declared both the taxi stand and the nearby bus station to be ‘occasions of sin’ because of these very magazines. Walking past the taxi stand one day, I saw Harryhausen’s Ymir from Twenty Million Miles to Earth leering out at me. I just had to have it but I couldn’t go in there so the man had to hand it out to me. It cost thirty-five cents which wasn’t easy to accumulate when your allowance was less than a dollar a week and some of it had to go in the collection basket. Like every other kid who found Fasmous Monsters, I memorized that issue immediately and started worrying about being able to afford the next one. Forry Ackerman, one of the kindest people on earth, dedicated an issue to me and even my family was impressed. My monster collection expanded and grew to include more monster magazines, the Aurora monster models, paperback books, stacks of newspaper clippings and eventually movie paper. All of this would have been more or less normal for a boy, but I was a girl so my behavior was considered a bit odd. My mother used to tell visitors, “Don’t go in my daughter’s room!” People used to wonder how I could sleep with a row of plastic monsters looking down on me and one sheets from The Comedy of Terrors, and The Raven (not the 1935 version) hanging on my closet doors.

How To Collect A Monster...
Forry We’ve Known and Loved by Freddie Poe (aka Dr. Vollin, MD) Ackermansion Photos by Alan Light
Forrest J Ackerman working at his desk.
January 1st 2009: It has taken me quite sometime to finally sit down and write this edition of H2CAM. Forrest J. Ackerman passed into Valhalla on December 4th 2008 at 11:58 p.m. Pacific time at the blessed age of 92. The affectionately known “Uncle Forry” had just celebrated his 92 birthday on November 24th 2008, despite being gravely ill. He had defied death so many times in the recent past, that everyone thought he would do the impossible again. But it was not to be this time around, the Grim Reaper claimed another victim. Someone we have all known and loved. If my memory serves me well, Longfellow wrote “Into each man’s life a little rain must fall..” such is the case of Forrest J. Ackerman. While this sad occasion has brought tears to my eyes, I thought about how much sunshine and happiness that Forry has brought into my life. For others that knew him on a more intimate level, those emotions must be magnified tenfold. Though I have heard some people say, “What is the big to-do over Forry? He was just another man with faults like any other.” Well to that I have to say, that almost everyone who collects horror movie posters today, does so because of Forry Ackerman, cut and dry. Not only is he responsible for poster collecting but he has been a major influence on nearly every Hollywood director of horror and sci-fi films in the last 30 or 40 years. And to him having faults? Let God be judge, the frailty of man. In our hobby this man deserves homage and I
will do so with the utmost respect. Those who do not believe that Forry was our “founding father” can turn to another page. I remember the first time I saw an issue of Famous Monsters on the newsstand like it was yesterday. It was at Henry’s Front Street News in my hometown of Worcester Massachusetts (aka Wormtown). It was issue number #12 ( June1961) featuring a Basil Gogos rendition of Oliver Reed as the lycanthrope in Hammer’s Curse of the Werewolf. When I first started reading Famous Monsters, the name Forrest J. Ackerman meant little to me. But as the years rolled past, Forry grew on me. I looked forward to seeing his name scattered all over the pages of F.M. I started to understand what an editor’s/ writer’s function was. I knew since I was very young, that I wanted to be like Forry. If it wasn’t for Forry and Famous Monsters, I wouldn’t be doing this column today (7 years this February) nor would I have been an English/Theater Arts major in college. Anything I ever accomplished in the arts was born from Forry, Famous Monsters and monster movies. I finally got a chance to meet Forry in person, when he announced the first Famous Monsters Convention in 1974 at the Commodore Hotel in New York City. I had just turned 16 and didn’t have a car, but luckily my local Famous Monster back issue dealer Bill Sweeny (God rest his soul) was kind enough to take me there, at his own expense. I got to meet Forry and shake his hand but can you imagine the throngs of fans at this first time ever convention? I was just one of thousands of adoring fans that wanted to meet the man behind the monsters. Meeting Forry in person was the catalyst behind my collecting. 1974 was the year that I started collecting movie memorabilia, instead of just looking at it on the pages of Famous Monsters. I wanted to own the actual stills just like Forry did. I always thought I was pretty alone in the hobby, especially in my hometown, but I was wrong. There was another Forry/FM fanatic in my area. His name was Al Astrella. Al eventually left Worcester to move out to the west coast, in hopes of meeting Forry and developing a friendship, in which he succeeded. Al rekindled his relationship with me after reading one of my articles in Scary Monsters magazine, in which I talked about my old horror haunts here in Wormtown. When Al read this, he said to himself “I remember this guy! He used to go to Ephraim’s Book Store and buy Famous Monster mags. We used to trade stuff!” I then informed Al about my column in MCW , which he immediately subscribed to and we have been in touch ever since. Al has also been my Forry middleman. Anytime I wanted info from Forry, Al was quick to oblige, including Forry’s last contribution to an article ever, my 'Top-Ten Sci-Fi Lobby Cards' piece, here on the pages of MCW. Al also provided me, over the years, with many great, signed Forry artifacts from the famed “Ackermansion.”

In many ways the House of Poe collection is a small tribute to Forry and the “Ackermansion.” While I will never have the collection Forry had, I will keep plugging away, forever trying to better my collection in honor of a man who filled my life with pleasures and treasures. If I have one regret, it was not being able to show Forry my “Franken-Forry” tattoo that graces my left forearm. Forry was scheduled to be at the 2007 Monster Bash, unfortunately he fell ill and was unable to attend. I never got yo meet him a second time. Ah, lost opportunities. Forry we’ve known and loved, you will live forever in the House of Poe. R.I.P With great admiration, Dr.Vollin M.D. Here are some words from fans, MCW readers, etc. James Warren: Publisher Famous Monsters: “This will be one funeral I never wanted to go to. I always thought he would outlive me. I thought he would outlive everyone. And in a way he will. They’re going to remember his name long after we’re gone. A lot of people are saying he was a good man. He was not a good man. He was a great man. His friends adored him. His fans couldn’t get enough of him.People he never met idolized him. His enemies hated him because he was a better man than they were. During those golden years I was his publisher my emotions toward him ran from: Irritation To amazement, To admiration, To fondness, To affection,

Gregg McCalmont, Massapequa, NY The first issue of Famous Monsters Of Filmland magazine I saw was #87 in 1971 in a drugstore in Commack Long Island NY. I was 11 yrs old. I was awe struck! It had the She Creature on the cover and was incredibly lurid with its bright orange cover. As an obsessed monster kid, I couldn’t believe my eyes! I had to have it. The cover price was 50 cents , which was a lot back then, but my mother let me get it. Of course I read it from cover to cover , until it fell apart. I cut out my favorite pics from the mag and hung them in my room. Dr Phibes was one of them. I ordered a lot of back issues, and had a subscription for a few years. Famous Monsters is one of my fondest childhood memories. I always thought of Forry Ackerman as the ultimate monster fan. I enjoyed his corny puns, and was always envious of his huge collection of horror and sci-fi memorabilia. When I was in my late ‘20s, I set out to find the sharpest copies of FM I could find and tried to get every issue. This led to my horror and sci-fi poster and lobby card collecting as well which I really enjoy to this day. Im sorry I never met Forry but I have been told he was gentle, sweet and a very generous man. I was sad to hear of his passing and will always be in debt to him for all of the joy he brought to me and countless other monster kids. Dan Hollis, New Jersey
Every square inch of the Ackermansion contained horror and sci-fi collectibles. This photo by Al Astrella shows just a small group of Forry’s incredible lobby card collection.
To love. True Love. I was dazzled by his enthusiasm. Humbled by his abilities. Captivated by his style. He was so good at what he did. He was warm. He was funny. He was precious. That’s why it’s so terribly hard to say goodbye. In all the years I knew him I never once heard him raise his voice in anger. He always spoke - and sang in a quiet voice. He spoke softly. He spoke low. He would always speak low. Like the song: “Time is so old, But life is brief. Forry was gold, And time - a thief. We’re late, It’s getting late, The curtain descends, Everything ends Too soon, Too soon ...” Now he’s with the great Talents he loved. Al Jolson. Marlene Dietrich. Sammy Davis. To them we say: “Welcome him. Enjoy him.” We did..For ninety-two years. Forrest J Ackerman, it’s time to get into that space ship and fly. Fly right over the Horizon. Just like you used to. And while you’re up there, look down and see the million lights shining on Planet Earth. Each one is a young reader you influenced. Each one is a part of the Legacy you gave to us. So long, Forry. Have a good trip. Have a great trip. I’ll see you later. –Jim.
the R2D2’s and the original Metropolis figure, encased in glass. I felt like I had a golden ticket and Mr.Wonka was giving me the red carpet treatment. Charlene and I spent close to “3 hours” walking around his museum/ home, soaking it all in: books, posters, pictures, props, drawings, paintings, photos...I mean, it was endless. I had my camcorder and filmed the entire time. I must have said on tape (after watching it later) “Oh my gosh” 100 times. We traveled each floor a couple of times and would pass Forry as he sat at his desk reading fan mail and taking care of this and that. I just kept telling him how amazing everything was and how amazing he is. He even accompanied us back outside and to his cellar to see a permanent “horror” scene he had set up with music and all. He did some playful acting for us, as though he were fighting a mythical beast in that cellar...”Back, back you horrid creature”, he yelled into the cellar as he whisked a broom in that direction...clearing way for us to ENTER IF WE DARE...WE DARED. The cherry on top of this incredible day was his inviting us to lunch with him at one of his favorite eateries. His assistant at the time drove. Forry sat in the front passenger side and we were in the back of his large, red car. I was filming him in the car on the way there and he had such a good sense of humor. I’m proud to say I picked up the tab at lunch. Least I could do for his kindness. Closing out this trip down memory lane for me was something really great that happened just prior to our heading to lunch. I had mentioned earlier in the day to Forry that my all-time favorite horror actor was in fact, Boris Karloff. Charlene said that to her, it had to be the multi-talented Vincent Price. Well, there we were in one of the many rooms filled with memorabilia galore. We were looking at some original face cast’s of Tony Randall’s Dr.Lao characters and then encased in glass, an actual Willis O’Brien brontosaurus model I want to say from 1925’s “The Lost World” when suddenly, we heard Forry calling”Young Lady. young lady......” Well, I looked at Charlene and said “He must be calling you!” So we headed back down the hall, towards Forry’s office. When we greeted him, he looked at Charlene and said “I have someone that would like to talk to you...it’s Vincent” and handed her the phone. Yep, he dialed his neighbor (of a few blocks away) and friend, Vincent Price, just to have him say hello -- to us! After my wife did her best Ralph Kramden impersonation ‘Humana Humana Humana’ and made light conversation, she handed the phone to me. I spoke to Vincent for probably three minutes. He asked me if we were having a pleasant trip, what we did so far...it was as though he and I were actual, long-time friends. I mean, he was so down to earth...and with that amazing voice
I wanted to share with you my reflection on someone who was such a genuinely, nice human being to countless people in his life time, yours truly included... Forrest J.Ackerman. Back in May of 1991, my girlfriend at the time (and lovely wife now) Charlene and I spent just under 2 weeks visiting California for the first time, something we always wanted to do! We visited all of the important places one would expect to visit if they only had 12 days to tour the Los Angeles area. Included in our stay were some magical visits with folks like Noel Blanc, Sody Clampett, Jerry Beck and a tour of Hanna Barbera studios. However, on one of our special days (I recall it being a Tuesday) I had arranged for us to stop by Forry J.’s ‘Ackermansion’ to meet the man himself. My best pal, Jeff O’Boyle, made it a point of telling us before our trip that we had to seek Forry out. Well, I did just that, calling him up out of the blue from our hotel in Los Angeles...and then a few days later, there we were on that fateful day heading up to his home in the Hollywood Hills! Now this was a pilgrimage many fortunate people had made over the years and needless to say, I was giddy. We got there around 10am. We rang his doorbell and heard him on an intercom system. We introduced ourselves and he asked us to head over to the black gate on the right which looked like it was right out of a Munster’s episode and even said “Karloffornia” on it. The gate opened and we headed down a path, made a left onto his back patio and in front of us was a giant Nautilus prop from the original 20,000 Leagues...as well as a large, original cardboard cutout of “Superman vs. the Mole Men”. Well Forry came out to greet us and it was like we knew him our whole lives. He was just real down to earth, a regular guy...with a great sense of humor and mischief. Forry invited us in and we chatted for maybe 15-20 minutes or so. He was proud to show us the ring he always wore given to him by Bela Lugosi. Then he said “why don’t you kids tour the house, go have fun!” I mean, my God, we just met the man and he’s basically giving us free reign to parade around his four floors of magic! I couldn’t believe it! I recall seeing a large size Gremlin right away, one of Forrest and Alan Light in the basement of the Ackermansion.

of his, WOW! I told him that my first memory of him was watching him when I was younger on a show called “The Hilarious House of Frightenstein”. You may recall him reading macabre poems to the viewers on that show. What was so cool is that Vincent told me that he totally forgot doing it and that he was real glad I reminded him of it. It was something he said he did up in Canada for a very short period time. All told, Charlene and I will never forget our wonderful day spent with a peach of a man, Forrest J. Ackerman and our chance conversation with Vincent Price. God Bless Forry-the actor, agent, writer, editor, collector, creator, historian, humanitarian and friend to all. I mean really folks –the man coined the term “sci-fi” and started the 1st fanzine. BTW, I have it on good authority that he’s been cast in a film up there in heaven along side all of Hollywood’s great horror actors, many of whom were his personal friends- ANDthat it’s a pretty big part! Lastly, here’s a link to a phone message Forry left me a year after our trip to C.A. (in 1992). I had told him I could make him some video tapes with rare Vincent Price material that I had--for him to keep on account that Vincent had just passed on. I hope you enjoy hearing Forry’s voice one more time...AND thanks for letting me babble on. www.timetravelispossible.com/MyFavoriteThings.html (Once at the page, scroll down to the bottom right and click on the picture of Forry and I to hear the clip.) Here’s Forry’s own words on his demise. IN CONTEMPLATION OF MY INEVITABLE DEMISE Mothers Day 2003 At my age, 86 going on 87, it is crystal clear to me that I am nearer the end of my life than the beginning and the thought passes my mind more frequently than it used to before I nearly died twice in 2002 that I’m a mortal man. Bob Bloch paved the way for the following ruminations with his remarkable revelatory article in the October 1994 issue of the now defunct prestigious slick paper science fiction oriented periodical, Omni. He stated bluntly: I’m going to die. Soon.—Thus absolving me of Harlan Ellison’s bitter accusation, “Bob was a very private person and he and his wife Elly resented your blabbing about his impending death at the World Science Fiction Convention.” Charles Brown reported that I broke the bad news “in unctuous tones.” Gay Haldeman congratulated me on my “gracious handling of the sad news.” So much for my exoneration. Bloch said: “I think anyone who isn’t afraid of dying is crazy.” So in Bob’s estimation I’m crazy. I wouldn’t be afraid of going to sleep one night, having no dreams and never waking up to know I was dead. On his death bed, Al Jolson breathed “I’m going!” I hope kind fate allows me long enough when I feel the end is near to record on tape “Science Fiction”, to die with my lifetime passion on my lips, then close my eyes and wait for my last breath. Let me turn back the clock a moment and explain something that most of you probably aren’t aware of. When I was a helpless child, unable to protect myself, my well-meaning parents subjected me to 7 different Sunday Schools before I finally rebelled. When I reached the age of reason, at 15 I had an epiphany and became a born again secular humanist before we had an euphemistic term for atheist. I realized in intellectual clarity that “God” only existed in the immature beliefs of inculcated humans, that all religions were unworthy, unnecessary crutches, remnants from supernatural times. Time for childhood’s end. Two Star Gods Fought With ax and mace.
A spark flew into The womb of space. Space nurtured it And gave it birth. Now men fight on planet Earth. --Alan Moss Peace on Earth. We sing it. We’ve paid a million priests To bring it. After 2000 years Of Psalms We’ve got as far as atom bombs. Touched by the Holocaust, Wendy’s two brothers and sister-in-law gave up on God because He either gave up on them and millions like them or else He wasn’t the benevolent, all-loving, all-powerful Deity that priests and rabbis portrayed him to be. He either turned a blind eye and deaf ear to the suffering and extermination of impotent innocents or He didn’t exist. Same for a Czech friend, whose entire family was slaughtered by Nazis before her very eyes, then she was abducted and forced to be a sex slave for 6 years for Hitler’s henchmen. She bears the numbered tattoo of a concentration camp prisoner in case there are any Doubting Thomases that such things existed. I’m convinced the colossal Cosmos couldn’t care less about the little specks of life on Earth called human beings. Nothing has ever occurred in the ensuing 14 lustrums (7 decades, 70 years) to contravene my conviction. Here’s the scenario. Quoting Bloch (I never knew this but suspected it) “The brain is technically alive for 3 or 4 minutes.” By prearrangement, a significant other will kiss my cooling lips and whisper in my ear, “Mi amas vin Kvari’—“I love you, Forry.” I will feel my eyelids being closed, I will hear a sobbing mixture of voices, “He’s gone”, We’ve lost him”, “How can we live without him?”, “Dear Forry, rest in peace”, “I’ll never forget you”, etc. It will be frustrating not to make a movement, utter a sound, but I know this is what I expected. When my brain ceases to function and my consciousness evanesces, I will never know there was an individual named Forry Ackerman who loved science fiction with all his heart and nonexistent soul, that he read it, wrote it, collected it, agented it, joined clubs, received awards, attended more World Science Fiction Conventions than anyone else. He will never know he learned Esperanto, traveled all over the globe, welcomed over 50,000 fans into his home. He will never know he was an inhabitant of a planet variously known as Earth, Erde, Terre, Tero and other names in a multitude of languages. He will universe out there with billions of bonfires in the skies called stars. Nothing will he know. And what comes afterward among the living? MR. SCIENCE FICTION DIES headline in Locus, various Appreciations. Mundane newspapers give him attention somewhat less than Heinlein’s. Like Wendayne before him, a couple of weekends devoted to friends gathering and reminiscing about him. As time goes by, fans will occasionally visit his crypt and place red carnations in the vases there. He’ll appreciate it while he’s alive but will be unable to see or smell them. He’ll suggest photos be taken and sent to Joe Moe at Forry’s last address, and if his “Guardian Angel” receives enough of them he will print a page and distribute it to whoever may be interested.Forry’s inert body will gradually molder away until nothing is left but bones once clothed with his flesh. Barring an earthquake, bomb or some unforeseen catastrophe , his remains will remain in his coffin beside his wife. A thousand years from now no one will know or care who Forrest Ackerman was. Maybe one day in the far distant future the very cement surrounding the crypts will crumble and his bones will join those
of the dinosaurs before him. But more immediately. He can imagine some annual award in his memory. Inclusion in a panoply of postage stamps (probably 50c First Class by then) in a sheet of commemoratives remembering important individuals in the development of Science Fiction: Isaac Asimov, James Blish, Hannes Bok, Ray Bradbury, Charles Brown, Edgar Rice Burroughs, John Campbell Jr., Arthur C. Clarke, Groff Conklin, Ray Cummings, Gerry de la Ree, Phillip K. Dick, Harlan Ellison, Virgil Finlay, Hugo Gernsback, H.L. Gold, Martin Greenberg, Robert Heinlein, David H. Paul, Julius Schwart, Mary Shelley, Steven Spielberg, Olaf Stapledon, Harry Warner Jr., Stanley Weinbum, H.G. Wells, Donald Wollheim, S. Fowler Wright, Jules Verne and who have I overlooked? Shame on me. Descriptions on the back of each stamp by John L. Coker III. A statue of me may be erected in the museum of the Science Fiction Experience, or better yet an animatronic robot in my form like the one of Abraham Lincoln in Disneyland. A play or movie may be made about me (think of all the roles for Gernsback, Wells, Heinlein, et al, and the challenge for two actors to portray Ellison and Ferry in reel life as mean-spirited toward me as they were in real life. Well, that’s about as far as my ego-orientated imagination can take me. Soon ring down the imaginary curtain and all aboard for Final Blackout. Sorry I won’t be seeing you Bob Bloch, Hugo Gernsback, Sam Moskowitz, Boris Karloff, war-lost brother Alden, Wendy and scores more in Never Never Land, but you won’t miss me. My maternal grandfather died with a beatific smile on his face as though he were seeing angels or loved ones. Maybe I’ll get lucky and imagine my mother calling, as she did when I was a child, “Forry boy, come and take your nap.” My blest wishes for anyone who may care to have the – F.J.A. R.I.P. FORRY, –DrV, Jan 2009
Dr. V is a walking tattoo testament to sci-fi and horror greats, including this image of Forry on his arm.

EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT YOU CAN’T GET ANY “DEALS” ON MOVIE POSTERS ANYMORE! But in fact, “everybody” is wrong when it comes to our auctions! It IS true in many other so-called “$1, No Reserve” auctions, you quickly learn that there is fine print that puts a MASSIVE minimum $9 buyers premium on all purchases, so that “$1, No Reserve” poster ends up costing you TEN DOLLARS! But in OUR auctions (at www.eMoviePoster.com), we have NO buyers premiums at all, so a $1 poster is REALLY a $1 poster! And we have the cold hard statistics to back up what we say. In 2008, we auctioned 59,689 items. Of those: 2,470 sold for $1 or less 3,543 sold for $2 or less 5,757 sold for $3 or less 8,096 sold for $4 or less 10,008 sold for $5 or less 12,393 sold for $6 or less 14,516 sold for $7 or less 16,063 sold for $8 or less 17,829 sold for $9 or less 18,201 sold for $9.99 or less We know that in those auctions with the $9 buyers premiums, they did not sell even a single item for under $10, because even if an item could sell for just $1 in their auctions, the $9 buyers premium would bring it to $10. In these uncertain economic times, doesn’t it make sense to spend your money where it goes the absolute furthest? We auction everything with a $1 opening bid and no reserves, and we only charge the actual cost of shipping (often less, when a buyer buys multiple items). We regularly give lots of great bonuses, often more valuable than the items required to qualify for them! Every week, we auction 1,000 to 2,000 items in our Tuesday and Thursday auctions combined, and it is virtually a certainty that some fair percentage of them will sell for “bargain” prices, and there may be some absolute “steals”! Remember that, unlike the majority of “hobbies”, where the money you spend on your hobby is gone forever, the money you spend buying movie paper will almost certainly be recovered the day you ever sell your collection (and many, many collectors have made lots of money on their collection over time, because unlike stocks, vintage movie paper continually rises over time!). Remember that, for just under 20 years, eMoviePoster.com has sold more movie posters than anyone else in the entire world!
