1. Bison are the largest mammal in North America. 2. Bison can run faster than horses. 3. Bison can run at speeds approaching 35 miles per hour and can jump over 6 feet. 4. Both male and female bison grow horns. 5. Bison can “plow snow” with their heads. 6. Baby bison are an orange-red color until they are a few months old. 7. Bison calves are nicknamed “red dogs” for their orange-red coats. 8. Bison calves weigh up to 70 pounds at birth. 9. Bison are herbivores, meaning they eat plants. 10. Cows (females) and bulls (males) usually live in small, separate groups for most of the year. 11. Young calves stay with their mothers. 12. Bison communicate through grunts and bellows. 13. American bison are considered a “near threatened” species. 14. Yellowstone National Park is the only place in the United State where bison have lived since prehistoric times. 15. When a bison’s tail stands straight up, this is a sign that the bison is angry and may be ready to charge.
