Letters Where did all the trees go?
What happened to the new trees that were supposed to replace the ones destroyed in the Marina? I see a lot of bushes, but bushes aren’t trees. On Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica and Washington Boulevard in Mar Vista they have the same kinds of mediums dividing the streets, but they have bushes and trees. With rents here in the Marina going up to $2,500 or more for a small onebedroom condo, you would think that the county could give us trees instead of just bushes. Russ Colby Marina del Rey
remedy applied. As it stands now, cars cannot proceed forward through the intersection due to the congestion flowing out of full parking lots. This year, traffic has been backed up all the way east of Costco. Pedestrians cross in “no crossing” areas and against flashing no walk signs. Cyclists and skateboarders are not obeying traffic laws and are often going in the opposite direction of traffic flow. It has become commonplace
that no vehicle is able to proceed through a green light, or even make a right or left turn due to pedestrians walking at will illegally. Emergency vehicles and residents with emergency needs may not be able to get through in time. Los Angeles City Councilman Mike Bonin’s office should take a look at this situation. Drum circle isn’t what it used to be
Re: “Bad vibrations,” feature story, April 17 Even though the drum circle has long been a part of the Venice Beach culture, there has always been a ban on percussion instruments and amplified music along Venice beach from the shore to the alley known as Speedway. Many law enforcement officers and drummers do not know
of this ordinance or of its enforcement history and other local unenforced and ignored ordinances. I recorded and photographed the drum circle when it had a few excellent amateur and professional hand drummers performing selected African, Central American and Cuban rhythms. Today it is different. The contemporary drum circle participants play a repetitious consistent rhythm without notations, rests or pausing and (Continued on next page)

It is as though there is a release of stress within the individuals and the group, as if they were a jungle tribe preparing to attack a neighboring tribe. It’s also reminiscent of when grammar school children were given drums and instruments to play randomly at will. It’s unfortunate that some of the local residents and visitors at Venice Beach have had to endure this unsophisticated free-for-all commotion. R. Mann Venice
FROM THE WEB:
Re: “Residents, activists push back against Mariners Village reboot,” news I appreciate the article about the Design Control Board Meeting Wednesday, March 26. I was one of the speakers at that meeting, a resident of Mariners Village. Your article has a very blaring omission: it never said that the DCB turned down the design presented by the lease holders/ developers of the complex. They plan to remove every tree in the complex and too many other changes to mention … but suffice to say, everything that makes this community so unique, beautiful and “back to nature”… nowhere else like it anywhere. You also failed to write about the presentation by John Nahhas, which showed all of the proposed development yet to come to our community. I would think The Argonaut as a community paper would be publicizing the development and its side effects; i.e., traffic (already almost impossible), accelerating rents, displacement of longtime residents, etc. Please keep your constituents in mind, not just your advertisers (real estate developers). Catherine Weinberger We already encroach on wildlife enough as it is in this area. Baby herons in their nest by the pool here, ducks crossing your path. The plan to take out trees for more shops and parking lots reminds me of the Joni Mitchell lyric (“They paved paradise to put up a parking lot”). And I can’t believe anyone would think we need more shops in the area. As for the planned boat slips to be added (narrowing the channel in front of Mariners Village): in summer, the main channel can already get crowded with various size crafts, coming and going,
as well as paddle boarders, kayakers, sea lions and dolphins going out to open sea and back. The narrowing of the channel is an unnecessarily dangerous proposition. Tracy As important as trees and birds are, journalist Joe failed to mention the detrimental effect on the hundreds of longterm residents that have made Mariners Village their homes. I am a land use consultant representing residents at Bar Harbor, who are being forced out of their homes so that the property can also be demolished and replaced by luxury apartments that only the wealthy will be able to afford. As I stated at the Design Control Board meeting, Los Angeles County has a conflict of interest ordinance that prohibits the Design Control Board and the Regional Planning Commission from deciding on permits on properties that are owned by the County of Los Angeles. Both the land where Bar Harbor and Mariners Village are located is owned by the County of Los Angeles, and it is a violation of the law for the County Department of Regional Planning to decide on luxury housing projects that will generate tens of millions of dollars in revenue for the County of Los Angeles. Further, every item on last week’s Design Control Board agenda pertained to properties owned by the County of Los Angeles, and they therefore had no right to hear any of the cases! I am very concerned as to why the county conflict of interest laws are allegedly regularly being violated, why Supervisor Knabe isn’t very concerned about it, and most important, why journalist Joe failed to mention it in his story. Robert Cherno Do “We the Residents” at Mariners Village rock? I have clicked my ruby slippers up Captain’s Row for the last 28 years because there’s no place like home at Mariners Village. The majestic great blue herons obviously agree. MV is on county “owned” land; that means the people’s land. And “the people” really are the caretakers. Elected officials are not “the boss,” Mr. Knabe. Don’t pay any attention to that man behind the curtain. Patti Balian, Mariners Village resident
Tonight @ 7 PM*! The Annenberg Foundation’s Mockery of Nature in the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve
The Annenberg Foundation has released preliminary drawings of their vision for the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve that reflect a lack of understanding of what an ecological reserve is for, and how children can best learn about the value of biodiversity. These images are a blow to the hundreds of volunteers who worked so hard to spare this land from development and make the ecological reserve a reality.
The Ballona Wetlands Land Trust, as a guest of the Sierra Club Airport Marina Group, will review the Annenberg Foundation’s recently released design drawings for a proposed 46,000 sq ft companion animal / “urban ecology” center, explain why so many conservation groups have spoken out against the proposal, and counter Annenberg’s deceptive PR spin with factual documentation. *April 24 - Refreshments and networking start at 6:30 PM – Presentation starts at 7 PM

Designing Up
By Joe Piasecki If anything defines Venice architecture, it’s that creativity is contagious. Like nowhere else in Southern California, homeowners color outside the lines of traditional design to fashion dwellings that reflect individual lifestyles and tastes. But rather than clash, these various styles somehow mesh together into a cohesive landscape. Take the Superba Avenue home of architect Doug Pierson and designer Youn Hee Choi (featured on the cover) — a 1,500-square-foot structure defined by sloping trapezoidal roof lines and walls of white metal and hardwood that floats above 600 square feet of ground tucked behind a 1950s stucco bungalow. Two doors down stands an early 1900s wooden carriage house
that had once operated on Venice Boulevard, markedly different in design from the palette of high concept contemporary and more conventional homes in the immediate neighborhood. “The nice thing about Venice is that as long as people take care — in expression and sense of place — the design of the house tends to fit in. So you can have an historic carriage house right next to a contemporary house, and it makes perfect sense,” said Pierson. “It’s much more of a vibe than a physical description [that defines Venice architecture].” While it’s true that Los Angeles city codes dictate the size but not the architectural style of homes, what makes Venice special is that homeowners tend to be more willing to use that freedom, said architect Ron Radziner, a partner in the firm
PAGE 8 THE ARGONAUT April 24, 2014
Marmol Radziner. “Ultimately it’s the people who live in Venice, influenced by eclectic and interesting architecture, that give us the ability to visualize how homes can be unique statements,” Radziner said. The Pierson-Choi residence, completed in 2012, is one of 30 homes on display May 3 during the 21st annual Venice Garden & Home Tour, an event benefitting the local Neighborhood Youth Association. This tour focuses on pedestrianfriendly neighborhoods east of Abbot Kinney Boulevard and near the Venice boardwalk that feature updated Craftsman homes and beach cottages, a barn-like structure of glass and corrugated steel formerly owned by Eric Clapton, a nautically themed art deco home and a A rear view of the Pierson-Choi home on Superba Avenue steel-beam loft with a second (see cover for front view)

“This is the land of the laissez-faire [design] doctrine: Leave people alone and they will find their own reality.” — Jay Griffith, landscape designer
story lap pool, organizer Barbara Baumann said. The event traces its roots to garden party fundraisers held by prolific Venice landscape designer Jay Griffith, whose varied work also appears on the tour. “This is the land of the laissezfaire [design] doctrine: Leave people alone and they will find their own reality. Bungalows next to stark modernism, Italianate, Greco-Roman … it’s just wildly all over the place, and that’s part of the Venice spirit. It is a breeding ground for divergence, and always has been,” Griffith said. Griffith, who has designed hundreds of outdoor spaces in Venice since 1972, said spatial relationships within each property’s unique footprint guide his design approach. A home’s architectural style, he said, is irrelevant. “You can plant a garden or you can plant a landscape. A landscape is a naturalistic study.
It’s not dependent on flowers. It’s not pretty,” Griffith said. “I’m looking to plant big principal plants like hedges, trees and vines — gestures that will carry the day over decades. Griffith said that with nearly every project he plants at least one street-visible tree and often plants similar trees on neighboring properties to encourage a sense of cohesiveness. Pierson, cofounder of the Inglewood-based architecture firm (FER) Studio, said decades of Griffith’s plantings have had a cumulative effect on Venice’s neighborhood identity, which he believes is driven by heightened attention to the often narrow spaces between homes. Radziner, who has had multiple homes featured in past Venice Garden & Home Tours, said the homes he designs are very much a response to what’s going on outside them. “For all of the projects we do in Venice, we try to maximize
outdoor space and play up the indoor-outdoor quality between home and garden. Because lot sizes are tight and small, the more you can blur that line the better. If you can stand inside your kitchen but also feel like you’re outside, that’s a success,” Radziner said. Architect Glen Irani, who designed his family home and studio on the Venice canals, said carefully designed homes in Venice put a high importance on outdoor space and natural light despite small, constrained lots. “It’s like a Rubik’s Cube, how you make all these things fit and still have that openness,” said Irani, whose home appeared on past Venice Garden & Home Tours. “Unlike the East Coast and a lot of other parts of the world, where tradition drives design and culture and style are prescribed as an evolution of what happened historically, Venice embodies California’s free-spirited personality.” Radziner and Irani trace the origins of Venice’s liberal take on home design back to the 1950s and ‘60s bohemians who inherited what was once a neglected part of the city and reshaped its character through an emphasis on the arts. The economic and social diversity of those times and the creative seeds planted prior to the widespread gentrification of Venice in the late 1990s still appear relevant today. “To me, the better work takes on some of the basic things about Venice. Materials tend to be a bit rougher and there’s a mix of materials — things that, if done properly, age well,” Radziner said. (Continued on next page)

Among Radziner’s favorite houses is architect Frank Gehry’s Spiller Duplex on Horizon Avenue. “With its corrugated metal and

Schools double down on language immersion
Students must change schools to make room for growing Mandarin and Spanish programs “I know that they are upset because they love their school, but I can only do what the district directs me to do,” said Broadway Principal Susan Wang, who came to the school with the advent of the Mandarin immersion program. Of the 298 students currently enrolled in the Mandarin immersion program, 285 live outside of Broadway Elementary School’s geographic attendance boundaries and attend the school through district permits, according to statistics provided by LAUSD. Traditional students number 107, 47 of whom live outside of the attendance boundaries. There are 39 students in the nascent Spanish immersion program, 23 of them attending by permit. In August, traditional students in grades two through five will transfer to Westminster Avenue Elementary School in Venice, about half a mile away. Mandarin immersion students will remain at Broadway through the 2014-15 school year but, but the following school year its kindergarten through secondgrade students will transfer to Mark Twain Middle School in Mar Vista. Third, fourth and fifth graders head to Mark Twain in 2015-16. On April 15, the LAUSD board voted to spend $25 million in school bond money to construct
new classrooms, offices and a cafeteria for the Mandarin immersion program at Mark Twain. Following the announcement of these changes, a group of traditional-curriculum parents rallied in front of Broadway Elementary for two days. “I don’t think it’s fair for them to kick us out of our own school,” said Rocio Hernandez, who attended Broadway as a girl and has a son attending the fifth grade there. LAUSD board member Steve Zimmer, whose district includes Venice and Mar Vista, said he recognized how painful it would be for some of the families to relocate. “No one can pretend that this is a positive for students who are caught in the middle of this very tough situation,” Zimmer said. “We’re to do everything that we can to make sure that those families get all the help that they need from this district.” But the Mandarin immersion program’s move to Mark Twain is also another brick in the foundation of a language immersion pipeline that Zimmer is trying to build in Venice and Mar Vista. Despite tensions, he believes all the ingredients for a successful language initiative are in place. “We have the opportunity to capitalize on the diversity of these communities and make

By Gary Walker In the three years since Broadway Elementary School in Venice welcomed a Mandarin language immersion program, parents of traditional-curriculum students have found themselves at odds with the newcomers over limited classroom space and fear of being displaced from the campus. Mandarin-immersion parents, many of whom live miles away, have argued they need full run of Broadway’s 20 classrooms for the rapidly growing program to prosper. Parents of traditional students have accused those families of trying to push their students out of the way. A recent decision by Los Angeles Unified School District officials settled the argument in an unexpected way: both groups will eventually have to leave the school. Through a gradual process beginning this fall, a Spanishlanguage immersion curriculum launched at Broadway last year will eventually become the school’s sole instructional program. The relocations are a directive from LAUSD Supt. John Deasy and have rankled many on both sides of the issue, with members of each group accusing district officials of misleading them into thinking they wouldn’t have to leave the school.
Parents of traditional-curriculum students protest in February at Broadway Elementary School
the commitment — as a school community, as a Los Angeles community — and say your child can come through our Venice system and be multilingual and multicultural at a level that, upon graduation from Venice High School, they would have a choice to study wherever they wanted,” Zimmer said. “We have simply the best dual immersion program in LAUSD and I’m sure one of the best in the state,” Zimmer continued. “It has weathered the storm of budget cuts, of pedagogical changes, and it is battle-tested.” Lillian Yee, whose son is in the Mandarin immersion program at Broadway, said that relocating the program to Mark Twain Middle School may ultimately benefit its students.
“We could then become a feeder school to Mark Twain,” said Yee, a liaison between the program’s parent council and the school district. Yee, whose child commutes to school from Porter Ranch in the San Fernando Valley, said the program certainly needs room to grow but was disheartened to learn that traditional-curriculum children would be moving out first. “After all, they were here first, but we do need a larger space [next year],” said Yee. “In many ways, I would have preferred that we moved to Mark Twain first instead of the community school leaving, but that’s not what the district wanted.” ª gary@argonautnews.com
Audit questions airport’s LAPD spending
LAX cannot fully account for nearly $8 million in payments that may have violated federal law By Gary Walker Los Angeles World Airports, the agency that oversees LAX, is unable to provide documentation for nearly $8 million in payments to the Los Angeles Police Dept. over the past five years — a possible violation of federal law if federal funds were used for those payments, according to a U.S. Dept. of Transportation audit released April 11. Federal law prohibits airports from paying federal funds to cities except for services that relate directly to operation of the airport. The Federal Aviation Administration, an arm of the U.S. Dept. of Transportation, annually provides LAX with millions of dollars — including $45 million in fiscal year 2012 — that airport officials are required to spend on airport capital
improvements and operating costs. Airport officials are now required to recover any funds that were spent on unauthorized police services and upgrade airport financial tracking systems by Sept. 30 to certify that LAPD officers are being paid only for necessary airport services, according to the FAA. “Any off-airport [police] costs will be deducted from [federal grant] payments,” Ian Gregor FAA spokesman wrote in an email response to questions about the audit. “The FAA takes seriously its responsibility to ensure that airport sponsors receiving federal funds follow the FAA’s revenue use policy. The policy requires any airport revenue to remain with the airport and to be used for
the safe and efficient operation of the airport and to make the airport as economically self-sustaining as possible,” Gregor continued. “Whenever the FAA learns of an alleged violation of the revenue diversion policy, the agency takes the necessary steps to investigate and work with the airport sponsor to remedy any violations.” LAX officials referred questions to a statement posted online. “Los Angeles World Airports takes the Federal Aviation Administration policy concerning the use of airport revenue very seriously. We have embraced the audit and fully cooperated with the Department of Transportation Office of the Inspector General throughout this process,” it reads. “The report is currently under review by management and counsel. As always, we continue
to work to better serve the public.” Los Angeles Airport Peace Officers Association President Marshall McClain said the findings of the audit did not surprise him. McClain, who has often been at odds with the administration of LAWA Executive Director Gina Marie Lindsey, said airport officers could be doing the same work that LAPD officers used at the airport are doing, with the exception of the bomb squad. “This is a practice [diverting federal funds to LAPD for services], that needs to stop,” he said. According to the Dept. of Transportation, three members of Congress contacted the agency in 2011 and 2012 with concerns about federal funds being spent on
city police officers. The agency did not identify those Congress members. The FAA spokesman said the agency began its own investigation of LAX police spending prior to the audit, looking into potential issues that included overtime spending, billing errors, LAPD officers working outside the airport on airport-paid time and LAPD administrative costs being billed to the airport. According to the audit, LAX officials reported no spending on legal services to the FAA in 2009 but internal financial data documented $4.6 million in legal spending that year. Airport officials blamed “issues with data integrity in 2009,” according to the audit. ª gary@argonautnews.com

Jones sworn in as Beaches and Harbors head
Gary Jones
After eight months as acting director of the Los Angeles County Dept. of Beaches and Harbors, Gary Jones was officially sworn in as the department’s top executive on April 17 by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. The department oversees the county’s governance of Marina del Rey. Jones began working at the Dept. of Beaches and Harbors in 2009 and previously served as deputy director
of its the asset management and planning divisions. Jones’ responsibilities included managing the portfolio of long-term ground leases in Marina del Rey that generate $42 million in revenue each year. He also oversaw the $11-million dredging effort to remove nearly 800,000 cubic yards of sediment from the Marina del Rey harbor channel. Jones was named interim director in 2012, when former director Santos Kreimann was appointed chief assessor after County Assessor John Noguez took administrative leave after being accused of taking bribes in exchange for lowering the tax rates of wealthy property owners. “My goal is to maintain and, wherever possible, improve on the excellent track record of a department whose dedicated employees work hard to maintain the county’s stunning beaches and the beautiful harbor and its public landside amenities in Marina del Rey,” Jones said.

Baryshnikov returns to The Broad Stage

•This Week• In ‘Man in a Case,’ the dancer-turned-actor speaks volumes about love through Chekhov’s uptight characters By Shanee Edwards

his year’s Winter Olympics in Sochi closed with a ceremony that celebrated some of Russia’s greatest writers, including the timeless Anton Chekhov. This week, celebrated Russian dancer and choreographer Mikhail Baryshnikov is bringing two of Chekhov’s short stories to life on The Broad Stage in Santa Monica for the world premiere of his latest show, “Man in a Case.” For this performance, Baryshnikov takes to the stage as an actor, collaborating with Annie B. Parson and Paul Lazar of Big Dance Theater. “It has been amazing to watch him transition to theater,” Dale Franzen, artistic director of The Broad Stage, said about getting to know what Baryshnikov is like onstage without his ballet shoes. “‘Man in a Case’ is a tightly observed work about love and loss that is so beautiful, and so haunting. [The play] re-imagines Chekhov’s short stories, bringing in contemporary elements to
heighten our sense of yearning, but never strays too far from the author’s 19th-century Russia.” The performance piece combines dialogue and movement with many surprising video elements, such as footage from a surveillance camera, cast interviews and an instructional hunting video. So how do all these disparate elements in this experimental piece shed new light on two century-old tales of love and loss? “I think an original story about love, or unrequited love for that matter, has less to do with gaining a new perspective on our attempts to truly connect with another person, and more to do with the intricately woven details of two lives colliding against each other,” Franzen said. “Man in a Case” centers on an uptight man who, trying to woo a spirited young lady, must confront his own shortcomings. “About Love,” the other
short story incorporated into the show, tells the story of a man who regrets failing to express his love to a married woman. Given his stellar dance history, it’s no surprise that Baryshnikov — known to his intimates as “Misha” — has been said to inhabit his characters with a rare physical, kinetic energy that adds layers to his performance on stage and on screen. “What is interesting about Misha in this work, and what I love about how he challenges himself as an artist, is that he plays these characters who are so tightly confined, either by society or their own emotional limitation, that they can never truly love. How that translates physically to his characters: with short, controlled movement and dialogue — and this is a man who can move — lends to so much emotional texture when they do, occasionally, break free of themselves,” Franzen said. Baryshnikov, who was first exposed to
Chekhov and “Man in a Case” while growing up in Latvia under Soviet rule, starred in the theatrical production “In Paris” two years ago at The Broad. While best known for his stunning ballet career and as artistic director of the American Ballet Theatre, Baryshnikov was introduced to younger audiences as Carrie’s love interest, Aleksander Petrovsky, on HBO’s “Sex and the City.” Now 66, does Misha still have what it takes to make women swoon? “An intelligent, inquisitive man who still dances? How can he not be sexy!” ª Franzen said. “Man in a Case” opens at 7:30 p.m. tonight at The Broad Stage and continues through May 10 at the Santa Monica College Performing Arts Center, 1310 11th St., Santa Monica. The show runs 75 minutes without intermission. Tickets are $87 to $137. For future performance dates and ticket prices, call (310) 4343200 or visit thebroadstage.com. Peas & Carrots
1260 15th St., No. 105, Santa Monica (310) 458-3300 Peasandcarrotssm.com I like dealing with people who are excited and engaged by what they do for a living. This is of course true in the culinary world, but not only there. I am fortunate to know a mechanic who regards a mistuned carburetor as a personal affront and a bookkeeper who takes any anomaly in a balance sheet as a challenge to her skills. Such people are treasures, and I give them my business whenever possible. There’s a new enthusiast on my list, a cheerful restaurateur named Marc who runs an endearingly odd bistro on a Santa Monica side street. Peas & Carrots is adjacent to the UCLA Medical complex, and given the name and location one might expect a menu that is largely vegetarian and bland. Instead, chef-owner Marc has indulged his interest in the culinary wild side — this is probably the only casual place in miles where you can get a kangaroo burger, rabbit sausages or a wild boar slider. You wouldn’t know this from a glance at the menu, which has an ordinary list of hot dogs, burgers, sandwiches and breakfast items. The only hints are the references to “exotic proteins,” which refer to an ever-changing lineup of culinary oddities. On the night we were there this included burgers made from wild boar, elk, lamb, camel, kangaroo and duck. There were 16 different exotic sausages available, plus skewers of sweetbreads, chicken hearts, wild boar belly and wild boar bacon. Unsurprisingly, it took a while to figure out what to have. Our party of three ordered a variety of items with Marc’s help. He asked about our favorite flavors and made recommendations, then ushered us to the pleasant outdoor patio with glasses of wine, beer and cider. About 15 minutes later, the table was filled with food plus a plate with five different sauces to try. We had a camel burger, an elk burger, wild boar bacon and red deer sliders, and pheasant and duck sausages, plus sides of carrot salad, pasta salad with grilled vegetables, potato salad, cucumber salad and fried

zucchini. It was a smorgasbord as we mixed, matched and traded bites around the table. The camel was a dense, rich meat with a strong game flavor — it’s not going to replace beef or pork any time soon, but it was interesting to try. It was best with the Dijon mustard or garlic sauces, bold flavors that enhanced the funky, earthy aspects. The elk was milder; the lean meat was served rare because it turns tough and dry when cooked even to medium. I’d eat venison and elk more often if I could find them, because they’re a healthy and tasty alternative to more common meats. Marc was pouring a relatively neutral Zinfandel that day, a grape that goes well with natural meaty flavors. It was a safe choice, but it would have been a challenge for any sommelier to exactly complement the bounty of exotic flavors we had assembled. If you’re a wine lover who wants to bring something to pair with a camel burger or elk, you are allowed to bring your best guess — corkage is $10 per bottle. The wild boar bacon had an excellent flavor, but the low-fat meat was on the tough side — it had been sliced thick and was chewy rather than crisp. I asked Marc about this and he agreed that it is easier to eat when sliced thinner and fried, but he said something of the essential and unique flavor is lost if you do. As for the sausages, the duck with apple and brandy was something I could eat every day — imagine the chicken and apple sausages that have become popular breakfast items, but with a richer meat flavor and the sweetness balanced with just a dash of pepper. The pheasant
sausage with cognac was also successful but more delicate, and had I tried it before the more robust items I might’ve been more impressed. My only complaint was that everything was served on standard soft rolls. I would have happily paid a little extra for a pretzel bun, slice of baguette, or whole wheat roll that would have been better suited to the meats. As for the sides, the carrot salad was exceptional. Instead of the usual mayonnaise-based dressing, this was simple shredded carrot with raisins, a dash of citrus and spices. The other salads and the zucchini were all homemade and wholesome but not attention grabbers. As we finished our meal, Marc came out with slices of three different cheesecakes: mango, espresso and berry, all on graham cracker crusts. I’m not usually a fan of cheesecake, but I was very partial to the espresso and also liked the other two. They had a lighter texture, and the mango cheesecake was among the best my wife had ever tried. Our meal for three with wine and beer ran $81, and considering that most of the meal was unusual and expensive items, that was quite reasonable. Peas & Carrots is an interesting anomaly, a place where a very friendly fellow welcomes those with adventurous tastes, but has other options for those whose tastes are literally a bit less wild.ª Peas & Carrots is open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. “I now place my personal will upon the altar. Your will, not my will, father.”
Sunday Services at 1:00 pm Saturday: Timothy B. Johnson Art Opening When Timothy B. Johnson was an art instructor at Bowling Green University in Ohio 25 years ago, imagination drove his paintings “because the landscape is so boring,” he said. Then a relationship with a French woman led him to live in France and Italy, where “art history is in your face, 24/7.” Johnson, who now divides his time between studios in Cannes and his native Texas, is displaying 30 recent paintings this weekend in Venice, including some created just a few days ago while visiting Calistoga wine country as part of a national art tour. peopled with odd characters, Johnson’s oil on canvas and wood scenes enjoy a loose, whimsical touch. Recently coming out of nine-year marriage, 58-year-old Johnson said that emotional journey has made his latest art a little less playful. But from the loose and lively studies of crabs, roosters and fishing boats he created earlier this month in the Florida Keys, that’s hardly noticeable. Johnson and Venice artist Catherine Martini, his sometimes painting partner and protégée, share gallery space from 6 to 9 p.m. at 1320 Main Studios, 1320 Main St., Venice. Marcelo Lehninger conducts New West Symphony in a world premiere of Russell Steinberg’s “Cosmic Dust” on Sunday in Santa Monica
The aural astronaut Russell Steinberg’s ‘Cosmic Dust’ is New West Symphony’s first commissioned piece under leader Marcelo Lehninger By Michael Aushenker The New West Symphony gets intergalactic when composer Russell Steinberg sprinkles his “Cosmic Dust” on Sunday afternoon’s program at Santa Monica High School’s Barnum Hall. “Cosmic Dust,” Steinberg’s 12-minute “abstract story,” is broken up into four parts: “Magic Sky,” “Shooting Stars,” “Interstellar Dust” and “Nova” (“The idea of the new,” Steinberg said), accompanied by dynamic Hubble telescope images. Steinberg’s piece arrives this weekend as the first-ever piece commissioned by New West Symphony under its new musical leader, Marcelo Lehninger. “Cosmic Dust” prefaces a program also featuring Chopin (Concerto No. 2 in F Minor for Piano & Orchestra, Opus 21) and Beethoven (Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Opus 67). “Cosmic Dust,” said Lehninger, “reflects my mission, as well as the symphony’s, to focus the repertory not just on standard works but on education and new music. We try to do a little of everything: war horses as well as new music.” Founded in 1995, New West Symphony features professional classical musicians holding concerts at three venues in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties: Oxnard Performing Arts Center, Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza and Barnum Hall. Under Lehninger’s leadership, the symphony presents six Masterpiece Series concerts
annually and also operates as a nonprofit with outreach to elementary school students. “It was appropriate to have Russell as the composer,” conductor Lehninger said this week after returning from the East Coast, where he substituted for the Boston Symphony. “He is not only our pre-concert lecturer and already has a following with our symphony patrons, but he regularly works with a youth orchestra.” Steinberg was previously commissioned by the Daniel Pearl Foundation’s Judea Pearl, father of the journalist slain by terrorists in 2002, to create 2011’s “Stories From My Favorite Planet,” a symphonic tribute to Daniel Pearl set to images inspired by his articles. In creating “Cosmic Dust,” Steinberg enjoyed carte blanche, but that’s not always the case with commissions. For a piece created for Rabbi Harold Schulweis, the influential spiritual leader of Encino’s Valley Beth Shalom synagogue, “I never asked him specifically his favorite music. When I learned it was George Gershwin, I realized why I had not hit the mark,” Steinberg said, chuckling. However, Schulweis’ Yom Kippur service would have a hand in inspiring his latest piece’s thematic thrust. “I heard him give this amazing talk that we’re all made of dust. We’re stardust. When we look at the sky, we’re actually looking at ourselves, at our origins,” Steinberg said. “It’s not a programmatic
piece, but one that tries to express the sky with the music and sounds,” Lehninger said. “It’s a pretty cool thing.” In 1999, Steinberg founded Los Angeles Youth Orchestra, drawing students from more than 60 L.A.-area schools to perform at downtown L.A.'s Colburn School. On Friday and Saturday, New West Symphony musicians play side by side with the Conejo Valley Youth Orchestra. Steinberg modestly describes “Cosmic Dust” as “just the appetizer” for a main course of Chopin and Beethoven. While he did not create his work with an eye toward how the Chopin piece would follow it — he initially toyed with the idea of creating “slow, undulating music, then took a 180-degree different direction” — Steinberg did compose with Lehninger in mind. “He has a tremendous drama,” Steinberg said of the symphony’s young leader. “I actually imagined how he can build momentum and create calm in places.” After Santa Monica, “Cosmic Dust” floats on to Baltimore and New Jersey. “I hope people hear something that’s a little different and excites their imagination,” Steinberg said. ª Hear “Cosmic Dust” at 4 p.m. Sunday at Santa Monica High School’s Barnum Hall, 601 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica. Kids play in the pool at the Annenberg Community Beach House, which this weekend celebrates its fifth anniversary as a public recreation and cultural programming destination
Party poolside all weekend The Annenberg Community Beach House throws itself an activity-filled fifth anniversary fiesta By Michael Aushenker It’s a five-year anniversary so big it will take a whole weekend to celebrate properly. The Annenberg Community Beach House, which opened in 2009, is throwing open its doors for two full days of festivities that include ballroom dancing, synchronized swimmers, live music, architecture lectures, yoga, kid-friendly beach games, a screening of a silent film staring original occupant Marion Davies, paddleboard lessons, a kiteflying workshop, a beach picnic and, of course, an open swim. “We created these activities as a way to introduce people to the Beach House for the first time or have [regulars] experience the Beach House in another way,” Annenberg Community Beach House Manager Nan Friedman said. The beach house and swimming pool are the vestiges of what was once a five-acre estate established by newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst for, Davies his mistress. The original site included a 100-room mansion that saw decadent parties featuring guests such as Charlie Chaplin and Marlene Dietrich, according to the Annenberg Foundation’s website. A developer who bought the property in 1946 razed the mansion but saved the guest house, pool and cabanas while building the Hotel Oceanside. The state acquired the property by 1959 and leased the site to the Sand and Sea Club until 1989, when the city of Santa Monica purchased it. Following damage from the 1994 Northridge Earthquake, the city’s plans to repurpose the site for public use were in flux until 2004, when philanthropist Wallis Annenberg provided a $27.5 million grant to refurbish and reopen the site. Over the past five years, the beach house has staged a variety of arts and culture activities. The city’s “Beach=Culture” series “transforms the Beach House into a place where you can see a local choreographer working out a new dance, listen to a quirky accordionist experiment with electronics and voice, get a sense of the process that a
film composer goes through to score a scene, view a collection of sculpture, painting and photography brought together by a local curator, or experience a Pulitzer Prize winner read from their work,” beach house curator Isa Naomi Okuyama, the city’s cultural affairs supervisor, said. “The Beach House gives back to the community in a very real way,” Okuyama said. “As the nation’s only public beach club, it brings together all sorts of different communities for a shared experience at the Santa Monica Beach.” Beyond the party, Friedman said the Beach House will continue to “look at some new ways we can engage the public” and add to current popular programming such as summer picnics and bird walks. “We want to continue to be a great destination year-round, where people can come to have wonderful experiences and make memories,” Friedman said. ª Anniversary celebration activities happen from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at the Annenberg Community Beach House, 415 Pacific Coast Hwy., Santa Monica. than I am,” she said. “Most of the animals don’t have predators on the ice. If you’re curious, you’ll be surrounded by all kinds of animals.” After years of visiting the desolate destination, L’Heureux, who is also an accomplished painter and recently displayed work at Bergamot Station, still harbors in her voice an enthusiasm for her trips. “It changes my art every year in that I went down originally as a painter to see white on white,” she said. “I wanted to do color field paintings and really look at the color white.” She chalks up her love for Antarctica to discovering something new each time — this year in Cape Adare, elusive baby Adelie penguins. “I finally saw an Adelie chick!” she said of this year’s trip. “They’re only a chick for like two weeks! If you blink and come back one or two weeks later, you’re in a very different Antarctica.” L’Heureux said the greatest hazard of heading to Antarctica for her photography is the inclement weather’s affect on her equipment. “At 38 below, regardless, it’s not going to work so well,” she said. That includes smartphones. However, “I’ve never taken a picture with an iPhone,” she said. ª The opening reception for “Eco Runway for Earth Day” takes place from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at G2 Gallery, 1503 Abbot Kinney Blvd., Venice. By Michael Aushenker Ten years ago, 60% of the Antarctic’s yelloweyed penguins had contracted a disease that many thought would render the birds extinct. The species remains endangered but manages to persist, and Venice photographer J.J. L’Heureux is displaying artistic proof at G2 Gallery. The Venice art gallery, founded in support of ecological awareness and causes, launches its Eco Runway for Earth Day group exhibit on Tuesday, featuring work by L’Heureux and 37 other artists. In addition to her close-up of a yellow-eyed penguin, L’Heureux is also showing images of a Galapagos land iguana and the grey-headed albatross, other animals that were once pushed to the brink. “They’ve been successfully saved [in recent years],” L’Heureux, who in February visited Cape Adare on her 13th annual trip to Antarctica, said of the rare animals she has captured on film. Fifteen years ago, L’Heureux was living in San Francisco when the 1989 Oakland earthquake struck. “I lost my studio. I was red-tagged,” she said. With no particular place to go, she headed to Venice to attend a friend’s birthday party. “I came down here and I never left!” she said. Aside from some elephant seals during mating season, which L’Heureux said one does not want to get in-between, all of her run-ins with the native animals of the Antarctic have been wonderfully non-eventful. “I’ve had albatross walk up and brush my cheek. When I’m sitting down, they’re taller

PET CORNER
Great Pets Looking for a Home CHLOE, a German shorthaired pointer mix, was pulled from the shelter with her litter mates when they were red-listed. Her litter mates have been adopted, but she’s waiting for a family and forever home. She’s very playful and would make the perfect family dog. RILEY, a Bombay mix probably about eight years old, was rescued from a horrific hoarding situation. He’s over the trauma now and pining for someone to love. He adores people, but is not so good with other cats. He’d love a home with someone who is at home a lot. If you are interested in fostering or adopting, please call Voice for the Animals at 310-392-5153 ext. 3 or email adoption@vftafoundation.org
