Let’s curb smoking at Venice Beach
An open letter to L.A. City Councilman Mike Bonin: It has been well over a year since I requested that you take action to protect your constituents from the ill effects of illegal smoking on the Venice boardwalk. The state has defined secondhand tobacco smoke as an “airborne toxic substance” and it is illegal to smoke on and west of the boardwalk, yet you have done absolutely nothing to protect your constituents from this well-established health hazard. I recently walked round-trip from Navy Street to Windward Avenue and was hit in the face with tobacco smoke 32 times. I saw a dozen others smoking but avoided their effluent by holding my breath or changing course to remain upwind of them. Most of the smokers were vendors, many were vagrants, and some were visitors who don’t know it is illegal because there are no signs so stating. There are now graphic signs on the boardwalk’s cement advising “No Bicycles,” but nothing to advise “No Smoking.” I saw no police presence during my few hours on the

boardwalk yesterday, and I saw no enforcement of the law prohibiting smoking. The fact that “No Bicycles” signs were painted on the cement proves that “No Smoking” signs could also have been painted there. By this email I hope to accomplish two goals: 1) Significantly curtail smoking on and west of the boardwalk; and 2) Make it known that you are a “no action” representative who will stand by while your constituents suffer the injury of illegal smoking. I don’t expect anything more from you than your usual “we’re looking into it,” and I am writing only to let you know that I am dissatisfied with your representation and that I intend to pursue this matter politically through proper channels. Seeking clarity on an unclear law
It has come to my attention during neighborhood council meetings that our meetings have become more formal and, as a result, more restrictive. I also occasionally hear or read what I perceive to be inaccurate statements about the Brown Act. When it comes to matters of law, we need to be able to distinguish what is right and proper from what is illegal. A real problem emerges when a majority of City Council members conspired with each other to loot their city. Those members are now facing sentencing for, as former L.A. County District Attorney Steve Cooley called it, “corruption on steroids.” I am writing to The Argonaut about this because I have a copy of a letter dated Aug. 27, 2012, in which the writer makes this statement in regard to a query sent by a neighborhood council board member: “…You asked if a board member may send correspondence to a majority of members of a committee even if that board member is not on the committee. The answer is no because this is a prohibited serial communication.” According to my Internet search, the term "serial communication" is used in the communication industry to refer to the process of sending data, one bit at a time, sequentially, over a communication channel or computer bus. How that can become prohibited when most of us daily use email and other digital devices confuses me. Examination of the law, however, reveals that the
Brown Act, in CA Govt. Code §54592.2(b)(1) names a majority of members who may not use a series of communications. Furthermore, in §54952.2(c)(1), the Brown Act specifically excludes contacts made by one member of a legislative body as long as the communication does not refer to another member. So what I see in the letter I quote is a restriction that is not clear. “Serial communication” and “a series of communications” do not mean the same thing to all readers. A board member, in particular, does not relinquish the right to communicate to avoid possibility of “serial communication.” No harm is done when “a” or “one” member communicates. The Brown Act harm arises when a majority of a legislative body decides to conceal meetings, as in the city of Bell where all five city council members concealed their decisions from the public. But depriving a lawfully elected official of the right or duty to inform other officials is not just sloppy writing, it is not just. As a matter of fact, I certainly would be greatly disappointed to know that an elected official was withholding information vital to the community. At a time in Los Angeles when many neighborhood councils are holding elections, it is important for those who have the duty to inform us to understand their duty to make the law clear and unambiguous. Candidate should turn right
In Natural Awakenings Magazine, self-help guru and lecturer Marianne Williamson claimed that we have the power to redeem our world. As a Democrat-turned-Independent, she is running for Congress. Not content with changing the world one soul at a time, she believes that she can heal Congress’ soul with a big hug of liberalprogressive bipartisanship. Her latest mailer, however, highlights endorsements from leading Democrats: former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, retired Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich, Minnesota Congressman Keith Ellison, and former “Desperate Housewife” Eva Longoria. Granholm was replaced by Republican Rick Snyder, who brought a limited government — low-tax, lower-spending — to Michigan and lowered unioninfluenced political culture, engineering a roaring recovery.

That’s real progress. Kucinich is now a Fox News contributor who suggested that Obama should be impeached, should he use military force in Syria without congressional approval. Kucinich is more limited government than progressive, to say the least. Congressman Ellison claimed that Obamacare-related job losses are a good thing because “Americans work too much anyway. Most Americans are not working at all or losing hours because of Obamacare. How is that progress? As for actress Eva Longoria: is Williamson’s campaign remotely serious? In the same mailer, Williamson attacks “expanding corporate influence in politics. Doesn’t corporate influence expose more people to her books and lectures, too? She then compares her independent status to Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, a self-described socialist. If anyone wants to call socialism progress, consider the bankrupted nations of Europe, fraught with tax fraud, government unionism and welfare-state profligacy. Williamson also wants to “disrupt the political system and “renew our dedication to democracy. The Constitution instituted a republic, frustrating popular democracy as well as special-interest elitism. The Tea Party movement is disrupting business as usual in Washington. To redeem Washington, D.C., Williamson should have run as a conservative. Arthur Christopher Schaper Torrance
Put that moocher Bundy out of business
It’s perversely ironic for rancher Cliven Bundy to excoriate poor people for collecting government subsidies while ripping off the federal government for $1 million in grazing fees. But even if he were to pay up, Bundy and his fellow ranchers would still be living on government welfare. Livestock grazing is subsidized by federal agencies on 270 million acres of public land in 11 western states to the tune of nearly $300 million annually. Monthly grazing fees per cow and calf on private rangeland average $11.90, but corresponding fees on federal lands are set at a paltry $1.35. Even so, grazing subsidies are dwarfed by other government subsidies and the medical, environmental and other external costs imposed on society by animal agriculture. These extra costs have been estimated at $414 billion annually, or $3,600 per household. Each of us can make our $3,600 annual contribution to the common good by replacing animal products in our diet with the rich variety of grain-, nut- and soybased meat and dairy alternatives in our neighborhood supermarket. LMU forum grapples with the NSA
Panel led by congresswoman explores tug-of-war between privacy and security Photo by Veronica Puleo
The ACLU’s Gabe Rottman and author Julia Angwin speak during the forum at LMU
By Gary Walker Rep. Maxine Waters (DLos Angeles) and a panel of constitutional law experts engaged in spirited debate with students last Thursday during a Loyola Marymount University forum weighing the need for domestic electronic surveillance against citizens’ rights to privacy. The panel, moderated by
Waters, represented a diversity of viewpoints on the ethics and effectiveness of National Security Administration spying at home and abroad. Julia Angwin, a reporter for the news website ProPublica who led a team reporting on NSA wiretapping for The Wall Street Journal, said government surveillance has become an
important, and so is having the kind of public accountability and transparency that we all want in every other part of our government,” Eastman said. “You cannot run a war and have it be played out simultaneously across the pages of our nation’s newspapers. So somewhere we’re going to have to reconcile these two significant competing interests — our national security and the interests in the government not having too much information on us,” Eastman said. During the audience Q-and-A portion of the forum, LAX Coastal Chamber of Commerce spokeswoman Rachel Horning asked a succinct question: “Edward Snowden: whistle blower or traitor?” “If we assume that the programs [that Snowden leaked] lost effectiveness, than he is a traitor,” Eastman responded. Angwin countered that there is no evidence that any of the programs that Snowden disclosed had been rendered less effective. Waters, who last year backed
legislation to limit the NSA’s ability to collect electronic data on American citizens, asked panelists whether information unrelated to national security that is obtained through government wiretapping might nonetheless be used against the surveillance target. American Civil Liberties Union attorney and legislative policy advisor Gabe Rottman responded that the use of information obtained unintentionally was a complicated issue. “When you have these types of programs, the inadvertent misuse of this kind of information is almost as dangerous as the adverted, malicious use of information,” Rottman said. “It could be exploited and used for political gain, and that’s why we understand that the twin evils that we need to be concerned about are secrecy and discretion. That’s why we need transparency and oversight by neutral arbiters to ensure that our investigative tools are being employed ª effectively.” gary@argonautnews.com
and information about the driver and the cause of the crash was not available. Officers with the Los Angeles Police Dept.’s West Traffic Bureau also responded, but “since no one was transported [to the hospital], no report was taken,” traffic investigator Lee
Willmon said. LAPD officers only file collision reports when an incident involves an injury, city property is damaged, or a driver flees the scene or appears to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. “We were very lucky, because
there was glass everywhere,” said Winter, 44. “My friend didn’t even move, but it did scare me.” The restaurant closed after the crash but reopened on Monday, an employee said. ª — Gary Walker

unfocused pursuit that unjustly entangles Americans who are not suspected of criminal activity. “To me, as a citizen, that feels less fair than targeted surveillance directed at a known bad guy,” said Angwin, who recently published the book “Dragnet Nation.” “I think we need more information to evaluate these dragnets … but I do feel that dragnets inherently feel unfair. Indiscriminate surveillance — ubiquitous surveillance of me when I’m not a suspect — would not have happened previous to this technological era.” John Eastman, founding director of the Claremont Institute’s Center for Constitutional Jurisprudence, countered that the threat of terrorists operating in the shadows requires such vigilance. “We are in a war and we don’t have divisions of troops or ships and planes that we can point to. The most significant front in this war is the information front. And if that’s true, then collecting that information is critically

Car slams into Marina del Rey Baja Fresh A handful of diners taking a late lunch on Saturday at the Baja Fresh in Marina Marketplace were startled but not hurt when a late model Mercedes slammed into the building, sending shards of glass into the restaurant. “I thought it was a gunshot. Tony Palermo (center, holding a large bottle of champagne) gathered members of the Marina del Rey business community in front of his restaurant on Monday to toast the end of Admiralty Way construction
Admiralty Way roadwork comes to an end Local businesses impacted by traffic gridlock celebrate with a champagne toast on Marina del Rey’s main thoroughfare By Joe Piasecki and Gary Walker Marina del Rey’s long traffic nightmare appears to be over. To celebrate the completion of a county roadway improvement project that snarled traffic on Admiralty Way for seven months, Marina del Rey business leaders gathered in the center of the harbor’s main traffic artery on Monday for a brief champagne toast. “We want to send a message to the community that you can come down here and it doesn’t take a half-hour to get from one end of the street to the other anymore,” said Tony P’s Dockside Grill owner Tony Palermo, who organized the gathering in front of his restaurant. Palermo was joined by staff from other Admiralty Way businesses such as Café Del Rey, The Warehouse restaurant, Jamaica Bay Inn, the Hilton Garden Inn and the Ritz-Carlton
Marina del Rey as well as members of the LAX Coastal Chamber of Commerce, the Marina del Rey Convention & Visitors Bureau, L.A. County Dept. of Beaches and Harbors spokeswoman Carol Baker, firefighters with L.A. County Fire Station No. 110 (next door to Tony P’s) and Marina del Rey Sheriff’s Station Capt. Reggie Gautt. “From an emergency-response standpoint, we’re really glad to have the roadways clear and free,” Gautt said. “The improvements were much needed, but we’re happy to have everything back to business as usual,” LAX Coastal Chamber of Commerce President Christina Davis said. “We’re absolutely thrilled the roadwork is finally done and that everybody can move freely through Marina del Rey and support all these local businesses with ease.” Closures and construction along all 1.8 miles of Admiralty Way from Fiji Way to Via Marina
began last year after the L.A. County Board of Supervisors approved a series of harbor infrastructure upgrades in late 2012. Improvements along Admiralty Way included median reconfiguration and landscape replacement work, street light relocation, turn pocket modifications and new traffic signals, signage and pavement. The project also created two left turn lanes from southbound on Admiralty onto Mindanao Way. The project began with the removal of ficus trees that were planted in Marina del Rey more than 40 years ago and developed wide root systems that lifted and cracked pavement along Admiralty Way. The L.A. County Dept. of Public Works has already begun planting varieties of native trees in roadway medians to replace the ficus. A total of 82 trees will be planted to replace 55 that were removed last year, Public Works spokesman Bob Spencer said.
“It’s significant that the ficus trees were ripping up the curbs and the sidewalks. They were obviously a safety hazard for pedestrians and people who were cycling,” Baker said. “I know that the [new] trees are small, but they’re going to grow and thrive and they’ll be much better in the long run.” Cheryl Burnett, spokeswoman for Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe, said officials are planning further changes to Marina del Rey’s public trees. “In the interest of having planning and coordination, we’re looking at having a palate of trees for the whole marina to replace the ficus trees,” Burnett said. “We want visitors and neighbors to expect it.” Future Public Works plans for the marina include a waterline replacement project along Via Marina and Fiji Way that is slated to begin later this year. Officials say upgrades are needed to meet residential water service
and fire-protection demands. “We will continue to do our high-level of outreach with the Marina Lessees Assn., the Marina Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Design Control Board and Marina del Rey residents on what projects are going on and how they are coming along,” said Spencer. Palermo said some inconveniences to residents and businesses might have been avoided during the Admiralty Way project had tree removals and street repairs been accomplished in block-byblock phases instead of one long project. “People would call me and say, ‘I love you man, but I don’t have half an hour to get there and half an hour to get back.’ We were down about 12%. It was a long 200 days,” Palermo said. “In the future we would like the business community to be involved before construction. But like they say, it’s over. We’re here, come see us ª again.”

A darker side of movie magic Christina Lee Storm and Scott Leberecht question the future of digital moviemaking in L.A. with a film chronicling the bankruptcy of a Westside special effects house on the eve of Oscar glory By Michael Aushenker The success of the $600-million global blockbuster “Life of Pi” hinged on dazzling visual effects epitomized by Richard Parker, the nearly 100% computeranimated but hyper realistic Bengal tiger stranded in a rowboat in the middle of the Indian Ocean. But on Feb. 11, 2013 — two weeks before winning an Academy Award for that work — the venerable special effects house Rhythm & Hues filed for bankruptcy and abruptly terminated 256 employees. The crash and burn of an industry leader that had once employed 700 people in a threebuilding campus near Playa Vista rippled through the visual effects community, which expressed anger and frustration with demonstrations on social media and outside the Oscar ceremony. “Life of Pi,” which had gone on hiatus mid-production, was accused of contributing to R&H’s bankruptcy. Ang Lee, who had publicly censured the visual effects industry for being too expensive, didn’t mention R&H while accepting the award for best director for “Life of Pi.” Adding insult to injury, when R&H Visual Effects Supervisor Bill
Westenhofer tried to bring up the industry’s troubles in his Oscar acceptance speech, the orchestra drowned him out with John Williams’ ominous “Jaws” theme. During its heyday in the late 1990s, R&H had ruled alongside Industrial Light and Magic and Digital Domain Media Group as one of the visual effects industry’s “Big Three.” At a time when more movies than ever rely on complicated visual effects, how could R&H have been so unceremoniously dethroned? In short, Hollywood’s visual effects houses have succumbed to two long-brewing undercurrents. One is “the fixed bid,” in which the visual effects house, instead of the studio, winds up incurring costs on additional work and payroll expenditures caused by unexpected studio delays in production and significant overhauls to scripts midstream. “We can weather one project being delayed, but so many projects were delayed so close to one another. You can shuffle, but if everything is delayed, you’re in trouble,” R&H founder Keith Goldfarb said. The other issue involves lucrative subsidies that Photo courtesy of Scott Leberecht

encourage studios to outsource visual effects work to other states or countries. State Sen. Ted Lieu, who represents Westside communities, helped a film and television production tax credit bill make its way into law despite state budget troubles during the recession. As chair of the California Legislature’s Joint Committee on the Arts, Lieu is working to increase tax credits by $100 million “because clearly it has not been enough to stop runaway production,” he said. But Dan Lay, a veteran special effects supervisor who formed the trade group Association of Digital Artists, Professionals and Technicians (ADAPT), doesn’t believe tax credits are the answer. The subsidies race is a fool’s game of one-upmanship, he said, in which “even if California offers more, sooner or later someone will offer even more. There’s no long-term solution and there’s no end for this.” Moreover, said Lay, “Why does this film industry want taxpayers to bail them out even though the studios are doing fine?” “We think the whole paradigm is broken, but what can we do about it?” Goldfarb said. “We’re not fond of being the poster child.” ‘Life After Pi’ On Feb. 25 of this year, a 30-minute documentary on the rise and fall of Rhythm &

Hues was uploaded to YouTube. Produced by former R&H manager of digital production Christina Lee Storm and directed by longtime and current R&H art director Scott Leberecht, “Life After Pi” provides an easy-todigest overview of the collision of fixed bids and subsidies that led to R&H’s bankruptcy. The film juxtaposes emotional interviews with company founders, including Goldfarb, against footage of employees before and after the layoffs. “You get the wind taken out from under you,” Lee Storm said. “You’re hoping you’re doing really great, solid work. [But that success] didn’t attract more work [to R&H]. It’s really sad.” According to industry trade
publications, R&H filed for Chapter 11 with $27.5 million in assets and $33.8 million in liabilities. In the run up to the end, Legendary Pictures, 20th Century Fox Studios and Universal Studios loaned R&H about $20 million to keep payroll going long enough for the effects house to wrap production on films in progress. Soon after the bankruptcy, Santa Monica-based 34x118 Holdings — a subsidiary of Prana, a computer-animation and visual-effects company based in Los Angeles — beat out rivals Prime Focus and the Chinese company Brave Vision to purchase R&H. Current spokespeople for Rhythm & Hues, which
ArgonautNews.com Instead of leaving R&H and taking the vacation payout, Capizzi accepted what he called “a sideways promotion.” Shortly after losing his job, Capizzi lead a class action lawsuit on behalf of laid-off employees. In September, “We came up with a settlement of $3,000 to $4,000 [per employee],” Capizzi said, with some employees, depending on their seniority, getting more. Checks were cut in January. Despite the lawsuit, Capizzi emphasizes his high regard for namesake founder John Hughes. Capizzi said Hughes managed to set aside millions in reserve to guarantee staff payroll despite the loss of huge annual research and development tax credits in 2009. “John Hughes protected that so everyone would get something,” said Capizzi, who received an additional $11,725 through that set-aside. “To his credit, I’m still living off that.” ‘So it doesn’t happen again’ Caprizzi’s admiration for Hughes and the days of Rhythm & Hues past is also common throughout the interviews in “Life After Pi.” Founded in 1987 by Hughes, Goldfarb and four others, R&H quickly ascended as a leading progenitor of visual effects for movies, television and commercials, animating everything from the talking pig in “Babe” to those ubiquitous Coca-Cola polar bear spots. The company relocated in 1995 from a small building in Hollywood to much bigger, Playa Vista-adjacent digs on Jandy Place (just south of Jefferson Boulevard), where it remained for 15 years. “The building in Playa Vista had a central corridor along with

reportedly employs 300 people at offices in India, Vancouver and El Segundo, declined to have company leadership speak on the record for this story. By the time R&H was taken over, even its top competitors were in dire shape. Digital Domain co-founder James Cameron had left the company years before it was acquired by a Chinese company in late 2012, and financial troubles at George Lucas’ Industrial Light and Magic were curtailed when Disney bought out Lucasfilm for $4 billion. Digital Domain is now headquartered in Vancouver and ILM in London. Computer graphics supervisor Tom Capizzi, 55, was among the 256 laid off at Rhythm & Hues. Today, he remains unemployed. As early as 2012 —while R&H worked to establish an effects house for “Life of Pi” in Taiwan — Capizzi could see dark clouds swirling on the horizon, only this time it wasn’t a studio assignment on his computer monitor. A former lead digital artist at Rhythm & Hues, Capizzi had worked with the company since 1996 on many high-profile jobs: “X-Men 2,” “Daredevil,” “Stuart Little,” “Hunger Games.” But when R&H started missing payroll, “I noticed something was dramatically wrong,” he said. Capizzi contemplated jumping to Disney, where an exciting offer awaited to oversee “WreckIt Ralph.” Thanks to R&H’s “extremely generous vacation plan,” the visual effects veteran had racked up plenty of unused paid vacation. “I could have taken a whole year off,” he said. But as a divorced dad with children to support, “I was just working through one show onto another.”

a big stairwell so you’d run into people there,” fostering better communication on projects, Goldfarb said. R&H was such an informal and personable company, Goldfarb said it was only after being pressed by a reporter that he learned his actual title — vice president in charge of software. “They really fostered an environment to celebrate the artist,” Lee Storm said of her higher-ups, who rewarded employees with catered lunches and company barbecues. In 2010, R&H moved to a facility in El Segundo that foreshadowed a change in company culture, Goldfarb said. “What bothered me was the building itself — six floors with a small footprint. Employees are very reticent to move from one floor to another,” Goldfarb said. “The perks went away because we were bigger. You don’t Video still from “Life After Pi”

have any room to have lunch together.” Lee Storm, who joined the company in 2008, held on a bit longer than Capizzi but soon resigned and moved on. Goldfarb survived the February 2013 layoffs, but two months later his contract was not renewed. Hughes was also let go from the company he founded. “The documentary does a pretty good job,” Goldfarb said. “It’s very hard to express in words what it was like walking through the hallway, people alone in their office where they once had coworkers. Morale had sunk.” What Goldfarb will miss most, he said, is “the people, of course.” The makers of “Life After Pi” say their documentary “was never intended to reflect badly on the new owners or the new operators of the company. The intent was, let’s freeze this moment so we don’t forget it. So it doesn’t happen again,” Leberecht said. Many R&H workers who lost their jobs to the bankruptcy have vilified “Life of Pi” director Lee for his apparent apathy toward the industry’s plight, but Goldfarb said it is unfair to single out Lee. “It could have been any project. When [Lee] spoke it was absolutely the norm to think of visual effects as post-production and to think of post-production as not part of production.” Former R&H staffers have listed several films with production delays that set the company back, including “The Seventh Son,” the “Percy Jackson” sequel and “Marmaduke.”
Playing with a stacked deck What happened to R&H essentially happened to California’s entire visual effects industry. “It was the perfect storm of underbidding subsidies, the fixed bid and outsourcing,” said Scott Squires, a 20-year ILM visual effects supervisor whose experience runs the gamut from “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” to “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.” With so many movies dependent on effects today, Squires sees the studio-effects house relationship as “directly inverse — basically every movie coming out has visual effects, even independent movies,” he said. Compounding the demand for effects-driven films has been the rapid rise of the foreign box office, a once-afterthought market that now routinely overshadows domestic revenue. Every visual effects job starts with the fixed bid — the visual effects house’s initial budget estimate. “[The studios] take that number and shop it around to try to get even lower and lower,” Capizzi said. “Their attitude is, ‘If you don’t do it, we’ll take it elsewhere.’” When projects stall, initial budgets fall apart. “‘Life of Pi’ was delayed. It goes on hiatus for four months, then we pick it up again,” Lee Storm recalled. “Continuity, quality is interrupted. There is a specific group of people who can do, for example, water. They got placed on other films.” Making matters even more difficult, studios often greenlight (Continued on next page)

Charlie Chaplin debuts his Tramp persona in 1914’s “Kid Auto Races at Venice”
By Michael Aushenker Get a glimpse of what Venice looked like 100 years ago at Saturday’s Charlie Chaplin Centennial in Santa Monica, where a program of silent film shorts includes “Kid Auto Races at Venice,” the Chaplin short that introduced his Little Tramp persona. Other classics on the evening’s bill include Chaplin in “The Immigrant” (1917), Harold Lloyd in “Never Weaken” (1921), a restored and hand-colorized version of George Melies’ 1902 fantasy film “A Trip to the Moon” and the 1922 Buster Keaton short “Cops” — each accompanied by acclaimed organist Christoph Bull on his 1921 Wurlitzer theater pipe organ. Growing up in Mannheim, Germany, Bull started playing piano at age 5, organ by age 8, and classical pipe organs at church by age 12. He trained with a piano teacher who taught
him to improvise as well as play repertoire — skills that come in handy manning the Wurlitzer during silent-movie screenings. It was during an event at UCLA’s Royce Hall that Bull first accompanied silent movies with the organ, making his scoring debut with Keaton’s “The General.” Before a public screening, Bull absorbs a movie at least five times. “When I first watch it, I don’t do it with playing,” said the Elysian Valley resident. “I get familiar with the movie then write down ideas.” The final performance is “usually a mixture of implementing preconceived themes and reacting in the moment. There’s some planning so I don’t have to go on completely naked,” Bull said. No two organists usually accompany a movie the same way.
“To a certain extent, it’s interpreting and paraphrasing the movie,” Bull said. “Honestly, I’m going to express my version of the movie. Others may do something funny while I may play something sad.” Ultimately, he said, “The whole trick is that it must enhance the movie, but it should not distract.” With so many comedies on the bill, Bull’s soundtrack is sure to be competing with lots of laughs.ª The Charlie Chaplin Centennial, which also promises screenings of silent cartoons and appearances by surprise special guests, benefits the Santa Monica High School band program. Screenings start at 7 p.m. Saturday at Barnum Hall, Santa Monica High School, 601 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica. Tickets are $10 or $5 for students and seniors. Real estate developers spend a lot of time thinking about “curb appeal” — how to make a property look welcoming at first glance. Actress/Co-Star of Touched by an Angel, The Bible & Son of God!
D
owney was cast in “Touched By an Angel,” a 1994 CBS pilot as Monica, an apprentice angel just promoted to caseworker, with Tess (the Rev. Dr. Della Reese Lett) as her advisor. The show was one of the few network series to openly affirm the existence of a deity, and to speak of God “having a plan” for the characters whose lives Downey’s angel affected. Her lilting, yet not overbearing, Irish accent helped give the series a charming edge. Rev. Dr. Della Reese Lett is the founder of UP Church.

“This dazzling three-story custom, waterfront home was designed by acclaimed architect Stephen Ehrlich and is located on the coveted southwest corner of Grand and Howland canals, “ says agent Susan Stark. “With its sleek and glassy style, this home features three bedrooms, two and one-half baths, plus a loft/office/den. The home is designed for both indoor and outdoor living with walls of sliding doors opening to the garden, fire pit and canals. The living room features soaring ceilings and a dramatic, wood-burning fireplace. The ‘cooks’ kitchen contains a sophisticated center island and an open dining area with patio access. The Playa Vista Community Yard Sale features dozens of vendors at Concert Park
By Michael Aushenker If there ever was a weekend made for yard-sale bargain hunting, this is it. Back-to-back community yard sales in Playa Vista and Venice, along with the opening of Playa Vista’s recurring summer-long night market, are a platform for neighborhood bonding that combines free entertainment with hot deals on cool stuff. Thanks to the organizing efforts of Jennifer Kingshott, Playa Vista residents come together on the first Saturday in May and November each year for a community yard sale. This Saturday marks the fourth year the Playa Vista Community Yard Sale takes place at Concert Park and coincides with the nearby Playa Vista Farmers Market. “It’s like Mayberry,” Kingshott said of her idyllic neighborhood. “It’s a close-knit community. Everyone kind of knows each other.” On Sunday, more than 50 Venice homes will participate in the second annual Venice Neighborhood Yard Sale, organized by local real estate agent Laurie Woolner. Participating homes are located in the area east of Lincoln Boulevard, west of Walgrove Avenue, north of Zanja Street and south of Rose Avenue. Directional signs will be posted throughout the neighborhood, but the easiest option is to pick up a vendor map at 2136 Walnut Ave. Woolner said she hopes the event will bring neighbors closer together. “I do it as part of my community to give back,” she said. Woolner will stage a similar event in Mar Vista on May 18. The Venice and Playa Vista events offer all the usual items you’d expect to find at a yard sale — clothes, furniture, tools, collectibles, toys, appliances and even electronics. Kingshott stresses that her community bazaar also offers some amazing “new ‘used’ stuff.” Returning to the Playa Vista sale this year is the popular Hello Kitty guy. “He works for Sanrio so he has all new Hello Kitty stuff,” Kingshott said. “Last year, he took in two grand. He cleaned up.” A resident of Playa Vista since the masterplanned community’s 2003 launch, Kingshott approached the homeowners association four years ago to start the yard sale, and the first
event attracted 55 vendors in 2010. This year, with the help of fellow Playa Vista resident Patti Londre, Kingshott presents her biggest event yet. Kingshott already had 57 vendor booths filled earlier this week, and most participants tend to sign up last-minute, she said. Further sweetening the deal: Goodwill of Southern California donates $50 to Playa Vista Elementary School for each bin it fills with donations at the Playa Vista Community Yard Sale. Last year’s spring event yielded 36 bins, or $1,800. There’s also live music and a balloon-maker and face-painter to entertain the kids, and Kingshott said the concurrent farmers market adds to the fun. “The farmers market has come leaps and bounds [since its early days],” she said. “Now you have a nice variety of food and crafts, homemade soaps, candles, clothing and jewelry.” But don’t let all that shopping tire you out, because the Playa Vista Night Market returns for its second summer season on Wednesday, in the same location as the Saturday farmers market. In addition to fresh produce, the night market offers an array of live musical entertainment, a Dancercise class led by Olympian Althea Moses and a variety of ready-to-eat food, including pizzas from Urban Oven, barbecue by Marvin and Matt’s Bake-Shack, the homemade flavors of Big Cup Soup, pastries, coffee and more. ª The Playa Vista Community Yard Sale happens from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Concert Park, south of Jefferson Boulevard on Concert Park Drive. For information or to reserve a space, call (310) 245-2822 or email outdoorgirl9@ ca.rr.com. To participate in Sunday’s Venice Neighborhood Yard Sale, also happening from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., or the Mar Vista Neighborhood Yard Sale on May 18, contact Woolner at (310) 699-0980; laurie@woolnergroup.com. The Playa Vista Farmers Market happens from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays and the Playa Vista Night Market takes place from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays at 6400 S. Seabluff Drive at the end of Pacific Promenade in the parking lot past Yummy supermarket. playavistafm.com. michael@argonautnews.com

While a few disgruntled artists did rant publicly against the Art Walk, that wasn’t ARTBLOCK’s raison d’etre. “Really, it’s been a long time coming to have an intergenerational art event created by independent artists,” Letelier said. Many studios on the route feature several artists. For example, Letelier’s studio also features seven others. Letelier and partner Mary Fama have collaborated on various projects, including a Dogtown

Avenue, where attendees can climb aboard for some eye and brain candy. ARTBLOCK circulates around “an area that is historically a source of art and imagination that fuels the imagination of people. It’s wonderful for artists to harness that myth in a way that’s positive,” Letelier said. “Since we are on the edges on Los Angeles, many people in the arts don’t have a sense of how an
artist community can fit inside a grander civic [plan].” Organizers say this confederation of Venice artists has been endorsed by numerous cultural and civic organizations, including the office of City Councilman Mike Bonin, Venice Neighborhood Council, Social and Public Art Resource Center and Mural Conservancy of Los Angeles. According to Letelier, some have mischaracterized ARTBLOCK as a reaction to several veteran artists being shut out of last May’s Venice Family

This weekend’s event highlights a mobile tribute to late poet and Venice fixture Wanda Coleman, whose portrait on Indiana Court and 6th Avenue Letelier and Fama have just finished up with the help of youngsters from Youth Build and Venice Community Housing Corporation. “People of all ages make the whole constituency stronger,” Letelier said. Some of the pieces on display are interactive. Accompanying the Coleman piece near
Letelier’s studio are installation boxes: one with Coleman poems and another with blank pages for attendees to write down their own poems. Coleman, Letelier said, “was a champion of the arts who felt that public space was really important. It was really great how she always turned out for public art.” Letelier relishes the spirit behind ARTBLOCK. “At every single one of our meetings, we’re really discovering what great fun it is to have a community of peers in which all of us are coming together to plan an event and have only ourselves to answer to,” he said. “How powerful it is to have mutual support from other artists [who usually work in isolation].” Another ARTBLOCK open studio is planned for October, with smaller events in the coming months. ª ARTBLOCK happens between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday. MEET SOME OF OUR PAST GRAND PRIZE WINNERS Gwendolyn Lawrence of Los Angeles Our 2011 CaDreamRaffle winner! “I did not believe the gentleman when he called to tell me I won the Grand Prize!” Gwendolyn and her husband are retired and were able to make life for their relatives a little better. “It felt good being able to make a difference helping others – paying it forward!” With her cash prize winnings, Gwendolyn was happy to be able to make a difference in a family member’s life, with some of her cash winnings she helped her sister pay off a car loan and medical bills.
Devin Griffin of Redondo Beach Our 2008 CaDreamRaffle winner!
“The Raffle winning affected our family in many ways.” The first thing we did was start college accounts for our two boys, all their cousins, the neighbor kids and my buddy Sergio’s kids (he told me about the raffle). We were also able to financially help family members that were having some rough financial times... remember 2008? We also stepped up our already planned vacation to Belize to a little nicer accommodations (What a great vacation!!!!) And.... of course we paid down some pretty hefty bills that were hanging over us at the time!
Debbie & David Kim of Torrance Our 2006 CaDreamRaffle winner! “When I first received the news of my winning, I didn't believe it, I thought it was a telemarketer, so I hung up. Then when the second call came, I remembered my ticket purchase and was so shocked that my knees became weak and I had to sit down! After I came to my senses, I called my husband at his work and told him the news and he hung up on me because he thought I was joking!”
