L etters City Planners, Not Fires, Killed the Piers Re: “Life and Death of the Venice Piers,” Venice Stories, May 5 The Venice Stories photo montage depicting the life and death of Venice’s amusement piers gives the false impression that the piers are gone because they burned down. Each earlier pier that burned from 1911 to 1924 was rebuilt after it burned. When Venice was annexed by the city of Los Angeles in 1925, city officials stopped the construction of an amusement pier at what was then Leona Street and vowed that Venice’s piers would be soon demolished. Legally they had to wait for the leases to expire. The three block-wide Venice Amusement Pier at Windward Avenue was ordered closed in April 1946 and the movable rides were sold. It bankrupted the Kinney Company. The picture shown for 1947 is during demolition, not a burned out pier. In the case of Pacific Ocean Park, which was part in Venice but mostly in Santa Monica, the city of Santa Monica forced them into bankruptcy over back
taxes in September 1967. The attractions were auctioned the following year. Santa Monica, which was redeveloping nearby Ocean Park, didn’t want an amusement pier nearby and made it difficult to get to the pier’s parking lot. Homeless people moved into the abandoned park and the first major fire occurred in 1970. By 1974, when the pier was finally demolished, there had been as many as 50 arson fires. When I published my book “Venice California – Coney Island of the Pacific” in 2005, I purposely didn’t include the many fire pictures of Pacific Ocean Park because most people look at the book’s 367 photos from the back toward the front and would have concluded the piers were gone because they burned down. Since stores in Venice don’t want to sell the self-published book, the fact that Venice was one of the largest amusement resorts in the nation is a wellkept secret. If people don’t know the piers existed, they won’t wonder why they can’t be rebuilt. Jeffrey Stanton, Venice
Use City Property for Housing I appreciate the work L.A. Councilman Mike Bonin is doing to help the homeless not only in his own district but in the whole of the city of Los Angeles. He deserves credit for standing tall on this issue. As a resident of Venice I would stand behind using city-owned lots to build more housing. Sheila Goldberg, Venice

Public Enemy No. 1: The AR-15 Unless people demand common-sense restrictions on these especially dangerous guns, the killing will continue. Photos by Maria Martin
Lone wolf maniacs have used the military-style assault rifle to commit mass shootings in Orlando, San Bernardino, Sandy Hook, Santa Monica and at LAX. Dec. 14, 2012: A man armed with an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle kills 20 children and six adults in a shooting spree at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. June 7, 2013: A man armed with an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle kills five people and injures four others in a shooting spree at Santa Monica College. Nov. 1, 2013: A man armed with a rifle similar to an AR-15 kills a TSA agent and shoots several others in Terminal 3 of Los Angeles International Airport. Dec. 12, 2015: A man and wife use two AR-15s to kill 14 people and wound 22 others in a San Bernardino office building. June 12, 2016: A man armed with an AR-15 type rifle kills 49 people and wounds 53 others at a gay club in Orlando, the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. That same day, Santa Monica police find three assault rifles, high-capacity magazines and ammunition in the vehicle of a 20-year-old man who claimed to be on his way to the L.A. Pride Festival in West Hollywood. There have been roughly 1,000 mass shootings in the U.S. in the 900 days since Sandy Hook, including two in our own backyard. Regardless of the killers’ motives, the mass shootings that hit hardest and closest to home involved one or two people inflicting maximum carnage with AR-15 or a similar military-style assault rifle. The excessive firepower of the AR-15 exceeds any reasonable requirements for self-protection or sport. The proliferation of this weapon and others like it presents a clear and present danger to the public — especially to young people, as was the case in Sandy Hook, Santa Monica and Orlando. California already has restrictions on the sale of military assault weapons. But in Florida and other parts of the country — including Indiana, where the man arrested on Sunday in Santa Monica came from — it’s much easier to purchase and wield an assault rifle than it is to get a driver’s license or to vote. Two weeks before the shooting in Orlando, President Obama lamented after a taping of PBS News Hour in Indiana that the federal government lacks legal authority to keep guns out of the hands of suspected terrorists. “I just came from a meeting today in the Situation Room in which I got people
Locals gathered Monday for a candlelight vigil to mourn the Orlando shooting victims who we know have been on ISIL websites, living here in the United States, U.S. citizens, and we’re allowed to put them on the no-fly list when it comes to airlines, but because of the National Rifle Association I cannot prohibit those people from buying a gun,” Obama said. That very same week, the Orlando shooter — who had previously been under federal investigation as a possible domestic terrorist — bought himself a high capacity killing machine. If that doesn’t make you angry, it should. On Monday night, dozens gathered underneath the Venice Sign at Windward and Pacific avenues for a candlelight vigil in solidarity with the victims of the Orlando shooting. Some of them had gathered there two weeks earlier to launch the inaugural Venice Pride celebration.
Candlelight vigils like this one typically invoke silence to honor the dead. But for some of those who gathered in Venice, the event was about speaking up — both for gay rights and stricter gun laws. “When it happened I wanted to do something so that I didn’t go to sleep or feel lullabied by the constant news of these [mass shooting] stories,” said Venice resident Michael Brunt, one of the event’s organizers. “When you’re afraid to hold the hand of the person you love in public and you finally find a place where you can hold that hand in peace, that is ultimately the definition of sanctuary. And so they got us at our home [by targeting a gay club]. And I’m here to stand proudly and to tell them that we’re not afraid to gather,” said Allan Jones, 29, a Venice resident.
“If you don’t go out and be who you are and be with the one that you love, it’s like if you stay indoors then they’ve won. It’s like you’ve already died,” said Mar Vista resident Eden Trevino. “Tonight, it’s like we’ve got to fight for change. We need better gun control laws,” said Kyle King, a Culver City resident. “I actually think today that a moment of silence is not the most respectful way to respond. I think the most respectful way to respond to what happened yesterday is loudly and angrily,” said L.A. City Councilman Mike Bonin. We agree. This is no time to be quiet. As we saw after the Sandy Hook massacre, unless people speak up nothing will change. Now it’s your turn. Write to letters@ argonautnews.com. June 16, 2016 THE ARGONAUT PAGE 7

Judge Dismisses Murder Charges Against Cadillac Hotel Owner Surveillance video and witness credibility issues did not support claims that Sris Sinnathamby ordered Venice boardwalk killing By Gary Walker A judge has dismissed the murder charges against Cadillac Hotel owner Sris Sinnathamby, who had been accused of ordering the Aug. 30 shooting death of a Venice Boardwalk musician during a confrontation with a group of homeless men outside his hotel. On June 8, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Elden Fox granted a defense motion that argued there wasn’t enough evidence against Sinnathamby to take him to trial on charges of murder and attempted murder. Sinnathamby is “absolutely ecstatic,” said Alan Jackson, his attorney. “We knew from the very beginning
“To use the judge’s words, in order to hold Mr. Sinnathamby to answer, he would have to believe the prosecution’s witnesses that claimed to hear the statement ‘Shoot that n*****.’ The court stated, ‘I simply don’t believe them,’” Jackson wrote in an email statement to The Argonaut. Prosecutors are unlikely to file new charges against Sinnathamby. “The charges against Mr. Sinnathamby were dismissed by the court for insufficiency of the evidence. Unless additional evidence comes to light, it is unlikely that we will refile the charges against him,” L.A. County Deputy District Attorney John Mckinney said. LAPD officers arrested Sinnathamby
“There’s going to be some work required to get his good name back, but he’s looking forward to being an integral part of the Venice community again.” — Alan Jackson, defense attorney

that these charges were patently false. We just needed our day in court, and we knew that when the facts came out the court would see that as well,” Jackson said. County prosecutors had accused Sinnathamby, 55, of ordering alleged Venice 13 gang member Francisco Guzmán to open fire at victim Jascent Jamal Warren, who went by the nickname “Shakespeare.” Guzmán, who is represented by a different attorney, remains in custody in lieu of $3 million bail on charges of murder, attempted murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Surveillance video that undermined the credibility of prosecution witnesses was instrumental to the judge’s decision, according to Jackson. Many of those accusing Sinnathamby of ordering Guzmán to shoot Warren were among the group of men who had physically attacked Sinnathamby after the shooting and were also suing him, he said.
just hours after Warren’s death. It took an additional six weeks for the LAPD-FBI Joint Fugitive Task Force to hunt down Guzmán, who was arrested Oct. 5. On the same day that Fox tossed the charges against Sinnathamby, he denied a separate motion to dismiss the case against Guzmán. Guzmán’s next appearance at the Airport Courthouse in Westchester is set for June 22. Sinnathamby, meanwhile, “is looking forward to putting his life back together,” Jackson said. But restoring Sinnathamby’s reputation might take some time, he said, given the high-profile nature of the case and the popularity of Warren, whose friends and family held a memorial in his honor on the boardwalk in September. “There’s going to be some work required to get his good name back, but he’s looking forward to being an integral part of the Venice community again,” Jackson said.

A rendering depicts the planned seaside Trader Joe’s in Marina del Rey By Gary Walker The California Coastal Commission has rejected an appeal against the redevelopment of Pier 44 in Marina del Rey, allowing construction of new restaurants and retail — including a waterside Trader Joe’s specialty grocery story — to break ground along Admiralty Way as early as this year. Santa Monica-based developer Pacific Marine Ventures LLC plans to reconfigure the boat sales, maintenance and dry dock facility into an 83,253-squarefoot shopping and dining destination encompassing eight new structures. In addition to a Trader Joe’s with a seaside dining patio, parking for boats and a water taxi stop, the new Pier 44 would set aside another 8,000 square feet for waterfront restaurants and include a public pedestrian promenade along the waterfront that’s 28 feet wide. A new location for boating supplies retailer West Marina and a new home for the South Corinthian Yacht Club are also in the mix, with space for 462 cars and 100 bicycles to park. The Costal Commission June 9 PAGE 10 THE ARGONAUT June 16, 2016
vote to reject the appeal was unanimous. Jon Nahhas, a frequent critic of Marina del Rey development who founded the small boater advocacy group the Boating Coalition, had filed the appeal against Pier 44’s coastal development permit. “Marina del Rey was built for the recreational enjoyment by the residents of Los Angeles County. It was not built for the residents as a destination to shop. Based on the information available, it appears that the approved project is inconsistent with the [coastal development] policies related to traffic, public participation in the decisionmaking process, public access, non-water related uses in the tidal zone and the overall policies of the California Coastal Act,” Nahhas wrote in his appeal. Nahhas also complained that the new Trader Joe’s location does not provide adequate parking and that not enough was being done to mitigate local traffic impacts. He also charged that officials did not allow for adequate public participation in the review and permitting
process, a frequently voiced concern about new development in Marina del Rey. The project has been approved by Regional Planning and the supervisors. Nahhas was appealing a decision by the supervisors, who turned down his initial appeal of the planning commission’s approval. Aaron Clark, a land-use consultant with Armbruster Goldsmith & Delvac LLP who is representing Pacific Marine Ventures, characterized Nahhas and his Boating Coalition as a “coalition of two.” “The appellant’s chief allegation is that the project will adversely impact the public’s ability to access the coast, in contravention to the Coastal Act’s access policies. We categorically reject that false allegation,” Clark wrote to the commission about the appeal. Now that the project can move forward, Clark said Pacific Ventures would try to obtain building permits as quickly as possible. “We’d anticipate breaking ground by late summer or fall,” he said. gary@argonautnews.com

More Money for Beaches and Wetlands Congressman wants to make Ballona and the coastline eligible for National Park Service funding By Gary Walker The Ballona Wetlands, Ballona Creek and local beaches could become eligible for an infusion of federal funds under new legislation proposed by Rep. Ted Lieu (D- Torrance), who represents the area. Lieu’s bill calls for a congressional study to facilitate incorporating the wetlands and 35 miles of coastline — Playa del Rey, Marina del Rey, Venice and Santa Monica included — into the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. A hodgepodge of open space preserves and parks from Malibu to southeastern Ventura County, the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area is under the administration of the National Park Service, which coordinates with state and county agencies. Federal funding, if approved, could be used for maintenance and improvement projects but not day-to-day operations, Lieu said. That could mean a lot for the state’s long-delayed plans to restore the Ballona Wetlands. “In the long term, bringing the Ballona Wetlands into the recreation area would help draw down additional federal funds and resources that could be used for trails, maintenance and various projects,” Lieu said. Completion of an environmental study needed to begin wetlands restoration has been delayed time and time again over several years, but representatives of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife say the study is on track to be completed this summer. An infusion of new funding could have a big impact on the scope of restoration work, considering the loss of a $50-million pledge from the Annenberg Foundation after local environmental groups opposed its plan for a visitor center and animal care facility within the footprint of the ecological reserve. But state officials aren’t sure how Lieu’s bill would affect
Standing on the edge of the Ballona Wetlands in Playa del Rey, Rep. Ted Lieu makes the case that L.A.’s coastline should become part of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area plans for the wetlands. “As part of the study, the Secretary of the Interior would consult with federal, state, county and local governments, as well as private parties. Until we engage in those consultations, it is difficult to determine what effects there will be from including the Ballona Wetlands into the National Recreation Area,” state Fish and Wildlife spokeswoman Jordan Traverso said. Even if the wetlands receive federal funding to offset restoration costs (and related federal oversight of how those funds would be used), the 360-acre state preserve would remain firmly in the hands of the state, Lieu said. “This is not a proposal for a national park,” he said. Rather, the national recreation area designation would be about lowering jurisdictional barriers that no longer make sense. “The beauty of Southern California and the natural resources that we have are amazing. When they were created, there really were no boundaries as there are now. Those are artificial constructs,” Lieu said. “There’s no reason not to expand these areas.”
Bay Foundation Executive Director Tom Ford said he’s intrigued by the possibility of a national recreation area designation for local wetlands and beaches. “It recognizes the beauty of protecting our wildlife and native species. And I like the concept that we need to connect and coordinate these organizations within the national recreation area,” said Ford, whose agency has been assisting the state in its preliminary restoration efforts. Former Friends of the Ballona Wetlands President David Kay thinks it makes sense to bring the area’s natural resources under the federal umbrella. “I’m glad to see [Lieu] include the Ballona Wetlands in the study. I would hope down the road that if it is incorporated into the national recreation area, it would include things like access trails and signage for visitors to the wetlands,” Kay said. The study requested by Lieu’s bill would be expected to take at least three years, and additional legislation would be necessary to finalize the national recreation area designation. gary@argonautnews.com June 16, 2016 THE ARGONAUT PAGE 11

This was the plan for the 340 acres of undeveloped land along Westchester Parkway that separates existing homes south of Manchester Avenue from the north side of Los Angeles International Airport — until Tuesday. A collaborative effort by airport officials and Westchester community leaders under the direction of L.A. City Councilman Mike Bonin, the newly approved LAX Northside Plan Update cuts the density of new construction nearly in half — with 2.3 million square feet of development leaving room for plenty of green space, including a recreational walking path that connects to the beach, new youth sports fields and even a dog park. “To a lot of people in our community, LAX at times has seemed like a big bully. The Sound of Silence At HUSHfest, deejays broadcast through wireless headsets for dance parties no one else can hear
HUSHfest participants dance to the beat of their own headphones during a May dance party on the Santa Monica Pier By Stephanie Case A lifelong Angeleno, Roman Shea is no stranger to the sounds of the Santa Monica Pier: the tinny melody of the Looff Hippodrome carousel, the blips and dings of arcade games, laughs drifting down from the top of the Pacific Park Ferris Wheel. But at the far end of the pier on a recent Saturday night in May, it was silence that struck him. There, in silent tandem, hundreds of revelers danced to an invisible beat. Hips shaking, arms twisting towards the sky, the sea of strangers twirled and cavorted to music only they could hear. “It felt like a Charlie Chaplin movie,” Shea marveled. “It was like I walked into a silent film.” The quiet partiers came for HUSHfest, the first in a series of five silent discos this summer on Santa Monica Pier. The next one happens Saturday, June 18. Behind Shea, a long line of attendees snake down the boardwalk, waiting for their turn to hear the music. At the front, HUSHconcerts organizers busily hand out wireless headsets. Slip them over your
ears, and suddenly the night has a soundtrack. By the pier’s edge, two DJs play dueling sets only audible through the headphones. Dancers can flip between the two channels with the push of a button; depending on which DJ you’re listening
started with roots and hip-hop, mixed with some familiar pop samples. “Now, it’s more trap-y, grimy, electro music,” he says – perfect for quick, jubilant moves on the dance floor. Green, on the other hand, is groovier, and goes down smooth.
“You’re in your own little world, but at the same time you’re connected to everybody else.” — Kevin Nguyen
to, your headphones will pulse with a green or blue light. “As the DJ, it’s this immediate gratification,” says a partygoer with a colorful name: Ruby Tuesdae. “You know that if you’re doing really, really well, more of the headsets will be your color.” “[I’m] super into the blue,” says Kevin Nguyen, bobbing his head, his blue-lit headset glowing in the darkness. The set
Within the high-octane crowd of blue, Michael Jenkins swings his body to a more deliberate beat, immersed in the groove of green. “The headphones isolate you, make you feel a little more protected,” he says. “They make it a little safer to be yourself and let go.” Jenkins, a Santa Monica resident, came to HUSHfest alone — something he’d
never have dared to do before. “For a long time, I wouldn’t go dancing because I thought people would judge me,” he says. “Then, I realized that was silly. If people are judging me, what difference does that make?” Blond hair strewn across his face, he basks in a mid-groove glow and unabashedly dances like no one’s listening. “Here, you can connect much more through body language,” Jenkins says. “It’s a lost art.” With their headphones on, partiers feel free to stretch the boundaries of bodily expression. Dancing breaks out sporadically at Mariasol, the Mexican restaurant a stone’s throw from the dance floor. As some partygoers take a break to eat, one shimmies between two rows of tables. She struts out the other end with a funky slide, choreographed to the green DJ’s current jam: George Clinton’s “Atomic Dog.” While regular diners look on with confusion, every headphone-clad (Continued on page 33)

Raise a Pint for Gender Parity Three Weavers Brewmaster Alexandra Nowell hosts a tasting party to help other women break into the industry Photo by Nicholas Gingold
Alexandra Nowell is one of very few women at the top of the craft brew biz By Christina Campodonico christina@argonautnews.com Three Weavers Brewing Co. 1031 W. Manchester Blvd., Inglewood (310) 400-5830 threeweavers.la Picture a brewmaster and a brawny man with a beard likely comes to mind. The Pink Boots Society wants to make sure that more women are able to join the ranks of the booming but still vastly male-dominated craft brewing industry. On Monday, the organization of women beer professionals takes over the tasting room of the Three Weavers Brewing Company in Inglewood to raise funds for the Pink Boots Society’s Scholarship Fund. Nearly 20 beers from local and regional brew houses such as El Segundo Brewing Co., Eagle Rock Brewery, Monkish, Noble Ale Works, Phantom Carriage, Smog City, Drake’s Brewing Co., Stone Brewing and Coronado Brewing Co. are on tap for a special fundraising menu that includes six pours for
$30 and a commemorative Three Weavers beer glass. All proceeds fund opportunities — courses, training, stipends and study — for women to develop and enhance their skills in making beer.
“My professor pretty much laid it out for me: ‘It’s not very high-paying work and it’s definitely a lot of labor, but if this is something you’re really interested in you should maybe try to pursue a career in brew-

But I really love everything — the art and the science and the practice behind brewing,’ and so I gave it a shot.” This leap into the world of craft brewing landed Nowell an internship at the Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. in Chico. Moylan’s Brewing Co., where she got her “hands dirty” labeling and packaging bottles, unloading and cleaning kegs, and scrubbing out moldy drains. “It was several years before I even stepped foot on a brew deck,” Nowell says. But her big break came when Drake’s Brewing Co. in San Leandro hired her as a brewer. “They showed me everything,” she says. “I really learned the ropes there.” From there Nowell went on to become head brewer at Kinetic Brewing in Lancaster, also participating in Monday’s event. In 2014, Nowell teamed up with Lynn Weaver to found Three Weavers — instantly making her the first and only female brewmaster of the Greater Los Angeles craft beer scene. Nowell has since proven she knows her malt and hops. In recent years, she’s won two medals at the Great American Beer Festival and a gold medal at the World Beer Cup Gold for “Blood Junkie,” her popular imperial red ale.

A delicious view of the tasting room patio With 10 house-brewed beers on tap at any given time, Nowell holds her own in the hops race with a variety of popular IPAs but expands drinkers’ palates with alternatives such as her LAX-inspired Midnight Flight imperial stout (exceptionally smooth, considering its 9.5% alcohol content), easy drinking Seafarer Kölsch and surprisingly
rich Southbounder Coffee Stout. Despite her own success, Nowell believes that the brewing industry still has a long way to go to achieve gender parity, mainly because of traditional gender expectations for women and assumptions about the nature of brewery work. “It probably takes more time for a woman to gain respect in the industry then it does a man,” she says. “A mid-30s white man with a beard — you look at him and you’re like, ‘Oh yeah, he must know what he’s doing.’ People would look at me and they don’t assume that because I like to wear dresses and heels and makeup that I can also get really dirty in the brewery.” The crowds who regularly gather at Three Weavers prove that Nowell knows exactly what she’s doing — whether you’re talking about hard work or crafting a perfectly hoppy Expatriate IPA. The ArgonAuT REAl EstAtE Q&A
How is Silicon Beach affecting Real Estate? If you don’t know what Silicon Beach is, you probably have at least heard of Silicon Valley; that area in the southern San Francisco Bay Area where multitudes of global technology companies (Google, Apple and Facebook among many others), and startups have put down roots to join the bubble of engineers and entrepreneurs with the hopes of persistent innovation and success. Silicon Beach is our version; that area being the Westside region of the Los Angeles metropolitan area, which is becoming home to over 500 technology startup companies, and is already playing host to offices of major technology companies such as Google, Facebook, YouTube, Buzzfeed, SnapChat, etc. Google in particular seems to have big expansions planned in Playa Vista with the leasing of the famed “Spruce Goose” 319,000 SF Hangar.
Naturally, technology employees and executives, along with those talented individuals seeking prospects, are putting down their own roots here in the second-largest technology center in the country, and nearby housing makes a lot of sense. Some companies are even offering a housing subsidy to live close by, thereby incentivizing community. With the influx of tech money, there has been a housing grab enabling landlords to push premium rents higher. Furthermore, over the last few years home prices are rising, and sometimes selling above asking, pushing buyers into the Mar Vista and south Santa Monica areas. In some cases people are choosing to leave the region entirely. Others are concerned that the competition involved with these wealthy techies is making it much tougher for them to break into the market.
Aside from the national-international popularity of life in LA, some of tech’s biggest names seem to appreciate the comfort and atmosphere of our fair city, not to mention the droves of employees enjoying mid to high concept trade districts providing the latest and greatest shopping, dining and nightlife experiences. Of course, they also appreciate the overwhelming efforts of architects, developers and interior designers wanting to curate tech minded homes and condominium developments (or upgrades), with features like high speed internet in every room (some properties offering free wifi), modern design with an organic aesthetic, access to cultured high end design features capturing the beachy and artistic local community, for which they’ll spare no expense, along with relaxed floorplans and gardens, but serious entertaining features like
awesome humidors, wine cellars and karaoke rooms. Strangely enough, they don’t care so much about parking, as many prefer to walk or bike to their nearby offices. In summary, the demand is clear and seems to be growing quite dramatically here in MDR and Playa Vista, driving innovation of redevelopment and accommodations, warranting high prices, fierce competition, and perhaps an opportunity to sell your home or condo above market. This week’s quesTion is answered by

“Arrival Time,” a painting by vendor Outi Harma Affair of the Arts raises awareness in Culver City Think of it as a farmers market for art. More than 50 artists gather this weekend in Downtown Culver City for the 6th annual Affair of the Arts — a marketplace of painters, sculptors, ceramicists, woodworkers, jewelers and photographers that celebrates art as a potential catalyst for changing the world. Putting that theory into practice, a portion of sales proceeds goes to The Peace Project, a nonprofit helping to rehabilitate the disabled poor in Sierra Leone and the Philippines. Affair of the Arts also “brings people together around art, and it raises
awareness of our collective ability to create a more peaceful world,” says The Peace Project founder Lisa Shultz. She’s also founder of The Whole 9, the collaborative online arts collective that’s hosting the event. The artists are setting up in the plaza outside the Culver Hotel, with live music to accompany throughout the weekend. — Chase Maser Affair of the Arts happens from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday (June 19 and 20) near Culver Boulevard and Main Street in Culver City. At 25, Sarah Jarosz already has four albums under her belt By Bliss Bowen Sarah Jarosz made her first three albums while still a student. That’s a significant achievement by most measuring standards, even more so considering that the multi-instrumental singersongwriter was juggling demanding coursework with touring. “Song Up in Her Head,” “Follow Me Down” and the Grammy-nominated “Build Me Up From Bones” were all released by the Sugar Hill label, with whom the native Texan signed a deal when she was still in high school; all three were co-produced by Jarosz and Nashville veteran Gary Paczosa; and all three received accolades that have already secured Jarosz, 25, a respected position in the contemporary Americana landscape. Looking back, Jarosz isn’t sure how she managed to accomplish all that — “especially now,” she says, “realizing it’s so much work to make a record. I felt more present than ever with this album because I had time to direct my complete focus to it, not only with the writing process but also the recording process.
That was a real treat.” Her just-released “Undercurrent” is the first album she’s made since graduating with honors from the New England Conservatory of Music three years ago. It’s also the first album she’s recorded since moving to the Upper West Side of Manhattan, a city in which she’d dreamed of living since her initial visit at age 15. It’s also her first collection of all-original material. The bluesy track “House of Mercy” was written with guitarist and frequent collaborator Jedd Hughes, who will join Jarosz when she takes the stage at McCabe’s Guitar Shop on Friday. Jarosz is also joined by her I’m With Her bandmates Aoife O’Donovan and Sara Watkins, whose angelic harmonies gild “Still Life,” which Jarosz and O’Donovan wrote together. Elsewhere on the album, a mature pop sensibility emerges alongside her bluegrass-folk base in tracks like the dreamy “Back of My Mind,” written with Milk Carton Kid Joey Ryan, and the uplifting “Comin’ Undone,”

“Every day’s a war that must be won Whenever I feel like comin’ undone The song in my head keeps me marchin’ on” According to Jarosz, the “tone and vibe” of the haunting “Everything to Hide,” one of four solo tracks, “paved the way for a lot of the songs on the record. I wrote it in a hotel room in London, probably two years ago. Everything came out within an hour, and it was finished. That’s so rare. But it was a real gift of a song.” Playing more guitar also affected the album’s sonic palette. “It’s pretty organic, coming out of the fact that I wrote a lot of the songs on guitar. But there’s a fair amount of octave mandolin as well. It’s taken over, at least for the time being, from regular mandolin, for me. You play it exactly like mandolin, which is my first instrument of choice, (Continued on page 33)

A preacher’s daughter tries to win the heart of a young doctor in “The Eccentricities of a Nightingale” ghella’s early plays —“Hang Up” and “Cigarettes and Chocolate.” The first, originally broadcast on the BBC in the ‘80s, centers on the long-distance relationship between two lovers pre-cellphone-era. The second concerns a young woman named Gemma who gives up speaking for Lent. A wine and cheese reception with the cast and director Michael Pretzian follows. Two dates only: 3 p.m. Sunday, June 19, and 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 20, at Pacific Resident The-

They chat with their headsets askew: one ear covered, tuned into the music; one open, focused on their discussion. “I have a hard time talking to people in clubs,” says Tuesdae. “At [silent discos], I can have lovely, deep, connecting conversations with folks, instead of asking ‘What? What did you say?’ over and over,” she mocks, cupping a hand to her ear. On a flight of stairs high above the restaurant, Kevin Nguyen and a friend catch their breath and steal a moment —

though they keep their headphones with them. “You’re in your own little world, but at the same time you’re connected to everybody else,” Nguyen says. “I think it’s a cool idea: that separation, but at the same time, that connectedness. It’s kind of a weird feeling.” Beneath them, the motions of frenzied dancers ebb and flow as midnight waves crash with a rhythm of their own. Separate and connected, the crowd and the ocean move to music that only they can hear. HUSHfest silent dance parties continue for four more Saturdays: June 18, July 16, Aug. 20 and Sept. 17. Tickets start at $10. Visit hushconcerts.com for more information.

but it has a deeper and fuller, rounder tone, maybe, than a mando might have. In a sense it’s more supportive to vocals.” At this point Jarosz is feeling confident in her musical gifts and “very settled” in New York (the city’s streets feature as prominently in the video for the song as Jarosz’s warbling profile). She’s trying to take advantage of her access to the city’s “stunning community of musicians” whenever she isn’t touring by going out to hear live music every night, which inevitably yields new collaborations. Attending Michael Daves’ weekly residency at Rockwood Music Hall led to sitting in with him onstage, and an invitation to play on his “Orchids and Violence” album. Friends of friends introduced her to violinist and producer Johnny Gandelsman, who asked her to sing on a new arrangement of the traditional “Little Birdie” for Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble’s album
“Sing Me Home.” “It was a total thrill,” she recalls. “I have to pinch myself to think that that actually happened.”

“The tone and vibe of the haunting ‘Everything to Hide’ paved the way for a lot of the songs on the record. I wrote it in a hotel room in London, probably two years ago. Everything came out within an hour, and it was finished. That’s so rare. But it was a real gift of a song.” — Sarah Jarosz Jarosz has learned to savor such unexpected creative challenges. preservation that does need to take place that’s important. But I’ve always found myself falling in with those who learn their history and know their roots but aren’t afraid to move past that. … “With I’m With Her, I was made aware of how important other collaborations are to my own drive and my own inspiration. The goal, to me, is to create a musical life in which you can kind of keep jumping from one collaboration to the next while also having a really firm idea of who you are.” Sarah Jarosz performs with Curtis McMurtry at 8 p.m. Friday, June 17, at McCabe’s Guitar Shop, 3101 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica. $22.50. Canine and a Half Weeks My girlfriend sleeps with her two medium-sized dogs. They are, to quote her, her “babies.” I see them more as her bodyguards. We don’t live together, but even when I sleep over she refuses to kick them out of the bed. She has a nice bed they could sleep on downstairs in a spare room, but she says she doesn’t trust them down there. — Second Fiddle

She doesn’t trust them down there in the spare room? What will they do, get on the landline and make prank calls to Taiwan? The truth is, a dog (or dogs) left alone in a room may, in short order, chew a $900 leather chair into a $900 pile of stuffing. People tend to see this as the dog’s scheming attempt to show its owner who’s boss. However, anthrozoologist and doggy behavior researcher John W.S. Bradshaw says the notion that dogs are engaged in this fight for dominance with humans just isn’t supported by modern science. Unfortunately, widespread
belief in this myth has led many to see (highly effective) reward-based dog training as coddling and instead opt for Stalinistic confrontation- and punishment-based training, which Bradshaw writes “may initially suppress (some unwanted) behavior but can then cause the dog to become depressed and withdrawn.” Chewing, Bradshaw explains, is actually a form of tension relief for a dog. Tension? Because the dog has a big project due at the office? Well, actually, we bred dogs to bond with us, so they evolved to find human contact very rewarding. And according to Bradshaw’s research, many dogs experience serious “separation distress” when isolated from their owner — which they often express in all sorts of decor-destroying ways. (Welcome to Bed Bath & Look, It’s a Giant Dog Bone with Throw Pillows!) Now, maybe you’re thinking, “the girlfriend’s two dogs have each other!” If only that counted in dog terms. Bradshaw references a study
in which mutts in a kennel, separated from their usual canine kennel mates, didn’t act out; however, those separated from their usual human caretakers freaked. As Bradshaw puts it, for a dog, the key pack member is “almost always a human.” As for the human conflict here, relationships researcher John Gottman explains that the answer to gridlock on an issue isn’t solving the problem (which may be impossible) but being able to talk about it with humor, empathy and affection. What’s essential is that your feelings seem to be important to your girlfriend and that she at least considers possible compromises, like having the doggies in her bedroom but on beds on the floor. (It may take some training to get a bed dog to be a floor dog.) Ultimately, in the bedroom the reign of terrier may not end. But on the upside, paw-print place mats have yet to appear on the dining table, and your customary glass of merlot isn’t being set next to a bowl of pasta primavera on the floor.
Ugly Batty I’m a guy in my late 30s. I don’t fear commitment; I fear surprise — the surprise I get when I find I’m with yet another crazy woman. My previous two girlfriends eventually turned out to be total psychos: mean, controlling and paranoid that I was cheating (which I’ve never done). I’m beginning to think love is a ruse, with women pretending to be cool and balanced until their true crazy colors come out. — Weary There are events in life that are totally unexpected, like getting sucked up by a big vacuum hose into a passing alien spaceship. If you’re the
one who ends up under the probe, we don’t get to go all accusey on you, like, “You went out to the mailbox on a Saturday afternoon? WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?!” In relationships, however, though there are a few gifted crazies who can pull the long con, most reveal who they really are in many small ways — long before you wake up strapped to a chair with a bright light shining in your eyes: “Tell me why you had sex with the neighbor!” she bellows. You: “Wait — the 90-year-old?” Identifying which ladies are from Batshitistan involves two things: Taking things really
slowly so you can look at a woman’s behavior over time (especially when she doesn’t think you’re looking), and wanting to see more than you want to believe. It also might help you to take an honest approach to the past — admitting that you treated hope as a creative alternative to critical analysis. This should help keep you from rashly welcoming the wrong people into your life, like that dark stranger ringing your bell in the hooded cloak: “Come on in, mister! There’s a bowl of nuts on the table and there are cocktails on the minibar. May I take your scythe?”
