Los Angeles City Councilman Mike Bonin tied the knot with partner Sean Arian on Saturday with a festive, eco-friendly wedding ceremony in San Pedro officiated by Mayor Eric Garcetti. Bonin met Arian, vice president for innovation and emerging technologies at the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, at L.A. City Hall in 2009. At the time, Bonin was chief of staff to Councilman Bill Rosendahl and Arian was director of economic development for Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

Ad was right to bash Zimmer
Re: Open letter to LAUSD School Board Member Steve Zimmer, advertisement, June 26 I applaud the charter school parents in LAUSD board District 4 for speaking out against Zimmer. How dare he accuse them of essentially being racist? Mr. Zimmer made himself sound like a typical left-wing bigot. Charter schools cater to children of color as well as whites. Stop with the integration and diversity crap. What Zimmer should be attending to is cleaning up the horrible mess LAUSD has helped to create. I have several people of color who I mix with and not one of them sends their kids to a LAUSD school. This is still the America I love. Please do not tell parents which type of school (public, charter, private) they should send their children to. Furthermore, please stop calling whites racists because they feel and think as individuals. Fred Brenner Los Angeles

Share and share alike One big issue for local governments, however, is that many vacation rental providers aren’t nearly as honest, the Internet platforms that connect owners to renters are absent from the tax equation, and regulators are pretty much totally out of the loop. In May, Los Angeles City Councilman Mike Bonin and Council President Herb Wesson filed a motion calling on their colleagues to form a task force charged with Beachfront houses, condos and even yachts are offered as bringing city codes and Marina del Rey-area vacation rentals on AirBnB regulatory agencies up to date — and equipped to millions of dollars in tax revenue,” the collect revenue. motion reads. “The ‘sharing economy’ is redefining If those numbers sound staggering, the ways that goods and services are they are. ArgonautNews.com as six in Playa Vista and 15 each in Playa del Rey and Culver City. Like Los Angeles, Santa Monica’s hotel tax is 14%. Unincorporated Los Angeles County communities, including Marina del Rey, charge 12%. Some cities have pushed online vacation rental advertising networks to collect hotel tax receipts from users and deliver them to local coffers. “We’ve launched a program to collect and remit taxes in Portland and San Francisco, and we’re working to expand this initiative,” said Nick Papas, a spokesman for AirBnB. Whether Los Angeles would be part of that rollout, Papas wouldn’t say. Laws are ‘behind the times’ Taxes aren’t the only issue, however. In residential neighborhoods, zoning codes don’t allow property owners to rent homes, condos and apartments as temporary accommodations rather than leasing them as permanent dwellings. In Los Angeles, the response to the zoning conundrum has been relatively nonexistent. Benjamin Reznik, a prominent Los Angeles land use attorney, said a big part of the problem of regulating short-term rental arrangements stems from the city’s outdated community planning guidelines. “Our codes do not keep up with the times. Short-term vacation rentals are a new phenomenon, and our planning codes are not designed to deal with them. The Internet has taken what was underground and brought it aboveground,” Reznik said. Keeping up with the times is also important in the long run, he said, to prevent large-scale building owners from taking rental units out of the permanent housing stock to chase more lucrative short-term contracts. “They have to find a way to regulate their density in order to keep [short term rentals] from becoming full-scale hotels in residential areas. And as cities begin to grapple with regulations, certain homeowner groups, large hotels and unions that represent hotel employees may soon pressure city leaders on how these regulations are designed,” Reznik continued. In Santa Monica, the law is much less muddy — short-term vacation rentals are against the law in residential neighborhoods — but enforcement has been more reactive than proactive. Despite the hundreds of Santa Monica vacation rentals available online, the city has prosecuted just two related cases in the past four years. In 2010, the city prosecuted the owner of a single-family home on Navy Street that was used for short-term rentals and, through a plea agreement, ordered him to pay thousands of dollars in fines, said Santa Monica City Atty. Yibin Chen. City officials moved after receiving (Continued on page 9)

numerous noise, traffic and safety concern complaints from neighbors who said the residence had essentially evolved into a commercial hotel. “Short-term rental operations are essentially the operation of a hotel. In order to operate a hotel, you need a permit,” Chen said. “Engaging in short-term vacation rentals is no different than any other business.” The new ‘Range Wars’ Some who live near short-term rental properties and others concerned that having new neighbors each week erodes the character of neighborhoods have sought an outright ban on the practice. William Ballough, a resident of Playa del Rey for 20 years, owns two duplexes adjacent to a property used for shortterm rentals. He and his longterm tenants now deal with a constantly changing cast of neighbors who bring with them noise, traffic and other disruptions. “You never know who’s walking by your residence or down your street, and you don’t know what they’re up to,” Ballough said. Carl Lambert, who owns the Venice Breeze Hotel, is supportive of city efforts to collect hotel tax revenue from short-term rental operators and would like to see more operational guidelines as well. “They should also verify that housing is safe, and it’s important to ensure that the neighbors living near these rentals are respected,” Lambert said. “It’s also incumbent that there be responsible people available who are able to respond to neighborhood complaints.” An effort to ban short-term rentals in Los Angeles arose last year in Silver Lake, a hip and artsy neighborhood with similar demographics to Venice where the phenomenon has also taken off. A land use committee of the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council put forth a resolution calling for a ban that was, however, ultimately defeated after a group formed in support of sharing economy commerce organized against it. A town hall meeting held to discuss the resolution was dominated by members of Peers, an organization that supports short-term rentals and ridesharing, said Silver Lake (Continued on page 10)

Neighborhood Council member Anne Marie Johnson, chair of that committee. “People are concerned about the use of singlefamily homes as businesses,” said Johnson, who took the position that short-term vacation rentals are illegal. “Peers infiltrated our town hall and several people left the room because of them. They are not a community group. To me, they are a lobbying group.” The resolution went down in defeat in December. Johnson, an actress who starred in TV’s “In the Heat of the Night,” said Peers also mounted a challenge to her reelection in April. Late last year, the Venice Neighborhood Council also considered but ultimately defeated a resolution that would have asked the City Council to investigate the proliferation of shortterm vacation rentals in Venice and to draft a city ordinance that would regulate the practice. That resolution, also heavily opposed by Peers, lost on a vote of seven to three, with two members abstaining. Venice Neighborhood Council Vice President Marc Saltzberg, who drafted the resolution, fears that the ultimate conclusion of the sharing

The city “should also explore the feasibility of expanding its sharing infrastructure, promoting existing sharing enterprises, incubating sharing economy startups, utilizing idle public resources and what are the advantages in doing so,” the motion reads.

Yoga Inc. is a multi-billion dollar global industry, with more than 20 million devotees downward dogging in pursuit of a yoga-buff body, and its Mecca is Los Angeles. But amid the L.A. glitz and urban sprawl, the tendrils of a green movement are blossoming from the non-PVC, recycled-material yoga mats of practitioners like Swami Omkarananda. Turning yards into gardens also turns neighborhoods into communities, he points out. Campbell agrees: “Knowing that your eggplant came from your neighbor who planted it with love and is now sharing it with you creates an immediate sense of connectedness, which is what a big city like Los Angeles is lacking.” Developing this sense of community, she said, is what we’ll need to face problems that otherwise become overwhelming, like climate change. “Some people say urban gardening is about self-sufficiency. It’s not. It’s about
interdependence,” Campbell said. Omkarananda envisions planting entire blocks of vegetable gardens in her neighborhood: “Imagine if the fences came down and neighbors grew their own food in their front yards, sharing their abundance,” she said. “We wouldn’t need lawnmowers anymore. We wouldn’t need gardeners. If these were young families with kids, they would play together. We wouldn’t need nannies … “But it’s very counterculture,” she acknowledged. Still, the seedlings of change are slowly sprouting throughout Marina del Rey under Omkarananda’s green thumb. Among those inspired by Omkarananda is her neighbor, fellow gardener Helena Bjerring, who de-lawned her front yard after moving in. “If I have an excess of zucchini, and she has an excess of tomatoes, we help each other,” Bjerring said. “Though she always seems to have more produce than I do.” For Omkarananda, environmentalism is a moral imperative. “Environmental issues require a spiritual response. We have to change our way of thinking,” she said. “This is greater than organized religion. It is our survival.” July 24, 2014 THE ARGONAUT PAGE 11

‘Century Crunch’ awaits weekend travelers

More than 200,000 people are expected to pass through the airport each of the next three days, so airport officials are already working to notify passengers about the detours. “This is one of the busiest weekends of the travel season and we’re expecting a lot of displacement for vehicles with the detours that are going to be enacted. NEWS briefs Santa Monica set for airport showdown
Voters in Santa Monica will choose between two competing ballot measures that could play a crucial role in determining the fate of the city’s controversial airport. The aviation industry-backed Voters Decide initiative, which would require voter approval for any city attempt to stem the flow of air traffic or recast Santa Monica Airport land for non-aviation purposes, qualified last week to appear on the November ballot after collecting signatures from more than 10% of the city’s registered voters. On Tuesday, Santa Monica City Council members approved a competing measure that would maintain City Hall’s authority to manage the airport’s future but also include a provision giving voters veto
power over future city redevelopment plans for the airport. Advocates for closing the airport believe a decades-old operating agreement with the federal government expires in 2015 and have been creating buzz for potential alternative uses for the airport’s 227 acres, including a large public park. The council’s ballot measure would not require voter approval for converting airport land to parkland. Federal Aviation Administration officials maintain, however, that contracts bind the city to keep its airport in operation through at least 2023. The city has lost two legal battles with the FAA over attempts to limit air traffic, particularly jets. At the same meeting in which they
approved the language for the city-backed measure, council members also certified the Voters Decide initiative. An attorney for a neighborhood group seeking to curtail airport operations encouraged city leaders to consider postponing the ballot battle until spring, but council members pushed ahead. Councilwoman Gleam Davis, who backed the city measure, said she could not find cause for delay. “I think if we expect people to deal with the council in good faith, we have to act in good faith as well,” she said. Councilman Kevin McKeown said he felt obligated to certify the competing ballot measure petition “even if I have to hold my nose and do it.”

Airport officials view the pending construction of the Aviation/Century station as a transportation milestone, Parsons said. “It shows the commitment that airport executives like [Los Angeles World Airports Executive Director] Gina Marie Lindsey and Mayor [Eric] Garcetti and our transportation staff have to making the airport and public transit a reality for Angelinos,” she said. The coming weekend would also be a good time to avoid unnecessary car trips near the airport and explore alternative transportation options, Garcetti said in a statement. “We avoided Carmageddon on the 405 because we planned ahead and Angelinos chose to use transit and avoid unnecessary trips, and we can do the same during ‘the Century Crunch,’” Garcetti said. “If you are traveling to LAX during this time, it's the perfect time to discover the car-free options that are available, and you just might decide to use them in the future.” gary@argonautnews.com
The Voters Decide initiative is sponsored by Santa Monicans for Open and Honest Development Decisions, a political action committee with support from the national Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. Group spokesman John Jerabek said voters who pay attention can easily understand how the two measures differ. “I would just say that the difference between the two measures is ours lets people decide the central question: Should the airport remain an airport or not? Annual Marina del Rey vintage boat and car event is also a meet up for nostalgic New York transplants

By Michael Aushenker very year, the Classic Yacht Association and Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors join forces to hold Old Fashioned Day in the Park, a glorious excuse to show off vintage boats and cars — some dating back to the 1920s — in what has become a Marina del Rey tradition since 1976. “We love getting the boats out for people to enjoy and enjoy each other’s company,” Christine Rhohde, the Classic Yacht Association’s international staff commodore, treasurer and historian, said of the day-long event, which returns to Burton Chace Park on Saturday. “We always have a contingent of classic cars. It’s our opportunity to share all of the hard work that we put into the boats.” But what are all these transplants from the Bronx doing there? As it turns out, the nostalgic event has also become the annual grounds for an L.A.-area reunion of former residents of the New York borough. This year’s Old Fashioned Day in the Park marks the 15th annual Bronx Reunion Picnic. “New York growing up in the 1950s was a wonderful place,” picnic co-organizer Lew Aaronson, a graduate of the Bronx’s DeWitt Clinton High School, said. “There were no personal pressures. You went to school. You had your clique of friends, you played basketball. It was a kinder, gentler time.” Hard-core comic book collectors may recognize DeWitt Clinton as the hub of creativity it was, attended by Batman creator Bob Kane and Will Eisner, “The Spirit” cartoonist and father of the modern graphic novel. Aaronson adds he attended alongside Ralph Lifshitz, aka fashion designer Ralph
Lauren. “We get alums from Columbus, Taft, Evander, Bronx Science, Morris, Monroe, Roosevelt and Walton [high schools],” Aaronson said. “From time to time, we even see Bronxites from the parochial schools.” A New York alumni group organized by Lou Zigman at Beverly Hills High School inspired Aaronson and Palm Desert resident Doris Perlmutter (Columbus High, Class of ’61) to use Old Fashioned Day, with its nostalgic parade of vintage boats, ships, cars and motorcycles, as the vessel for their reflective reunion picnic. The annual Bronx gathering comes together by email and through a Facebook page called “Bronxites Now Residing in Southern California” (currently at 426 people) that has become an online rendezvous for these culturally displaced Angelinos. “I think it’s fantastic,” Rhohde, who chairs the event, said of the annual Bronx assembly. Based on previous attendance, Rhohde expects 500 people to attend Old Fashioned Day. Moreover, water taxis, at $1 a ride, heighten the day’s excitement. “People from east of the 405 need to come down and enjoy Marina del Rey and know you don’t need to own a boat to do that,” she said. As for dressing the part, “We encourage it,” said Rhohde, who sets sail in her classic 48-foot Crisscraft Catalina. “My boat is a 1950, so I’ll be dressing in what was yachting attire of the period.” Over the years, the Bronx picnic’s attendees have skewed white and JewishAmerican, reflecting the borough’s population during the 1940s through 1960s.
However, “we’re beginning to see graduates from the 1980s through 2000s [of varying ethnicities]. As the neighborhood changed, they’re DeWitt Clinton alumni, from left, Lew Aaronson ’57, Neil Robin beginning to take (Nathan Stein) ’58, Andy Diamond ’62, Bob Gramacy ’61, Allen Levy ’59 and Ted Singer ’65. part, but they’re just not enough. said. Eddy Shin doesn’t just sell to customers, he educates them
Is your clientele better informed or more adventurous than the typical Californian? Thanks to the media, particularly the Food Network, people are trying new things. They’re buying sous vide machines [for slow cooking in hot water], which have fallen in price so that home cooks can afford them. It doesn’t mean they use them correctly — I have seen people sous viding filets, which I think is preposterous. Some cuts really shine when they’re cooked low and slow. I don’t make chili here, but if I did, I’d use chuck, brisket or shank meat. Those have a lot of connective tissue, which cooks out after a couple of hours. The broth becomes thicker, beefier tasting. The same thing happens with different cuts of chicken — the dark meat becomes better when you cook it a long time, and with the breast if you overcook it, you destroy it. Would most Americans recognize good beef? They’re getting more educated, with one exception — Americans almost always select meat that’s bright, bright red, while Europeans don’t mind slightly brown meat. For that reason some supermarkets take the oxygen out of their packaging and replace it with nitrogen, or they spray meat with ammoniated water as a preservative, which is allowed by law. Americans don’t like the look of dry-aged meat, but it tastes better — as it ages it loses some water, which concentrates the flavors. A rib eye can age up to 40 days, and as enzymes break down the muscle fibers it gets tenderer. Are tastes in meat changing? Americans are eating more lamb, but it still isn’t as popular as it
is in Europe or the Middle East — they really love lamb there. Americans usually go with the chops, Europeans other cuts, and sometimes they cook them whole. Right now I have a 37-pound whole lamb that I’m going to cook for this weekend. We have other meats, too. I have fresh rabbit and will be getting goat in as of next Thursday. I didn’t know there was demand for it, but I’ve had some requests so I’m carrying it. What do you wish people would eat more of? I wish Americans would eat more pork; it’s a beautiful meat. With cows the yield is 60% or 70%, with pork it’s 90%. A lot of people have something in the back of their heads that it’s bad for you. They think it has to be cooked well-done and send it back in a restaurant if there’s any rose in it. I carry kurobuta pork, and if I put a cut of it alongside the pork you’d get from a supermarket, you’d see the difference immediately. You’d touch it and the flesh would be much, much softer, and you’d see that the fat cap would be thicker — the animal was much healthier. The commercial meat industry is based on poundage and muscle, and that’s why they use growth hormones. The kurobuta pigs have more space; they move more, so the animal has more intramuscular fat. That’s a sign of how healthy the animal was, and I think how happy it was. A fat animal is a happy animal, and I’m including myself. A Cut Above is at 2453 Wilshire Blvd. in Santa Monica. Most Americans eat meat without thinking very much about it — we know that beef comes from cows and pork from pigs, but rarely explore the differences in taste and texture of different cuts. Eddy Shin would like to educate us. He’s the owner of A Cut Above, a specialty butcher shop in Santa Monica that opened late last year. The shop sells more than just cuts of meat — their house-made sausages, cold cuts and pastrami are esteemed by those in the know, and they make excellent sandwiches. I snacked on a pork banh mi sandwich while waiting for Eddy, then started by asking him about his career. What led you to open a specialty butcher shop in Santa Monica? I was a chef for about 20 years, most recently at Primitivo on Abbot Kinney [Boulevard], and before that I was executive chef for several steakhouses. I was breaking down meat in my previous jobs, so this was pretty much a natural progression. I saw that there were no dedicated butcher shops on the Westside — there were store operations, but no place where that was the entire focus. What’s the difference? First of all, a lot of butchers are not using the most sustainable practices. Here we use everything, nose to tail. Our meat is hand-cut, while at most supermarkets they run everything through a band saw. That makes a difference. We give more attention to detail. We’re also very picky about the quality of our meat — we have a personal relationship with the small ranchers who sell to us. They’re more in touch with their operation and their animals. Regarding using the entire animal — don’t they do that already, even as pet food? All of what we cut is eaten by people. The heart of charcuterie is using parts that are often more flavorful but less valuable — some cuts are palatable but not beautiful, not nice neat steaks. They may be high in fat, but that’s fine for sausage or things that are cured or smoked. When most Americans think of meat it’s as steaks or burgers for the grill; my European clientele buys roasts and meat for braising.

Country by the sea
Songstress Eileen Carey returns to Summer Fest on Venice Beach By Carl Kozlowski In a place famous for rock bands like The Beach Boys and The Doors, singer-songwriter Eileen Carey is breaking the mold en route to success. For Carey, it’s country music that has propelled her into a music career that has so far brought her four CDs, a number of awards and a slew of concert appearances nationwide, as well as a recent publicity tour of radio stations in the South and Midwest. But her favorite shows are the ones that keep her close to home, mainly because she and her husband Joe save feral cats and have provided homes to many of the felines over the past few years. Carey will be performing at noon Sunday at the 6th annual Summer Fest on Venice Beach, bringing country to the coastline as the official spotlight artist in a daylong event that offers food, vendor booths and plenty of other fun in the sun. “This is my third year doing Summer Fest, and you can’t get any better than being on a beach performing,” says Carey. “The best part is that a lot of the proceeds go to feed the homeless and to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.”
A mother of two who lives northeast of Los Angeles in Altadena, Carey grew up in Willowick, a suburb of Cleveland, and credits her Ohio upbringing with giving her a different perspective on country music than most of her artistic peers. She was surrounded by rock music there before moving to California to work in a Sheraton Hotel as an assistant beverage director, and it was her experience there that inspired her to go pro as a performer. “I saw lots of performers whom I thought I was just as good as or better, so I decided to go back to performing myself,” says Carey. “I studied theater, acting and vocal classes and recorded my first CD. It went to AC (adult contemporary) radio first until a country music sales rep said to try country.” Carey calls her style “West Coast Country” because she considers her songs to be a mix of the sounds that were prevalent in every town or city she’s lived in. Carey’s determination to develop her own sound has paid off with her being named by the local television station KCBS as one of the top 10 rising female musicians in Los Angeles. That’s not the only recognition Carey

has received, however. She has won multiple Los Angeles Music Awards, a South Bay Music Award and a nomination for a Hollywood Music in Media Award (HMMA) for the CD “Movin’ On” as well as one for “Let It Go.” While she is determined to find success as an independent artist outside the major-label system, Carey also has offered her wisdom to other female musicians as a co-founder of FemMuse.com and TheMusicMom. com, which are tied to organizations that provide support and information for women artists and musicians. “I’ve been building my career and reputation for awhile, and my music is about what’s around me and what people are going through,” says Carey. “I try to give them a little advice musically. Hopefully then take it and use it, but who knows? It’s about showing somebody a different angle in life. I’m a positive person and I always try to see the light in any situation.” Eileen Carey performs at noon Sunday at the 6th annual Summer Fest on Venice Beach, near Windward Eileen Carey is finding her voice as an Avenue. Festival admission is free. Call independent musician (562) 277-7174 or visit fx3events.com.

confesses and dips into her lower register; later, gentle chords and harmonies cradle the poignant “Healing,” “Rollin’ Stone” and “Gotta Let Love Find You,” conveying a sense of hard-won grace. One of the album’s highlights is “Fallen Youth,” whose lyrics were penned by an unnamed Italian soldier during WWI: “I was running back when I heard him call/ And as I turned I watched him fall/ His body froze in disbelief/ And it fell to the earth like a fallen leaf/ … One man dies and I survive/ And it leaves me empty to be alive/ Another number is all it means/ To those who watch behind the scenes.” Bristow’s simple melody and delivery bind it with the intimacy of her own material. “This album I tried to just write from my heart more,” she says. “And I tried to keep more space in the recording. ‘Freedom’ was a little different, because I was living in Austin and wanted to make an album that’s fun.” Bristow, who moved to L.A. in 2006, relocated to Texas in 2009. Considering the virtual caravan of artists who’ve migrated from L.A. to Austin recently, it was heartening when she chose to return last year. “I went down for the music and had a great experience,” she explains. “But I love California and I missed my friends, and I feel more comfortable here. I have a community of Australians and we’ve known each other a long time.” Like numerous other singer-songwriters, Bristow sustains her career with song placements in TV shows (in Australia and New Zealand; she’s still trying to crack the US market). She’s also opened shows for a substantial list of marquee artists, including Marc Cohn, Joe Ely, Tommy Emmanuel, Daniel Lanois and Bettye LaVette. “I’ve been lucky in that way,” she acknowledges. “I haven’t really had a breakthrough song and I don’t have my own Jackie Bristow’s new record conveys a sense of audience in that sense, so to be chosen by other hard-won grace people to open for them in beautiful venues — it doesn’t get much better. Saturday at UnUrban Coffee House in Santa Monica, where members of the Change-Links staff will also be seeking volunteers help to keep the publication going. “This was like his secret life. I’ve talked to many people close to John. None of them knew he was a painter,” said Greg Foisie, a ChangeLinks contributor who organized the exhibit. Outside of his writing, Johnson was a man of few words. “He was a very concerned person, a very giving person,” Foisie recalled. “John was a very soft-spoken person. He wasn’t someone who would talk at great length.” And yet others have paid tribute to Johnson at great length. The genesis for the art show as well as planning for the future of Change-Links sprang from Johnson’s memorial service, where Johnson’s sister, Linda Hoffman of Mar Vista, recalled how eloquently speaker after speaker remembered Johnson’s life. More than 100 people paid tribute to Johnson at Beth Sher Shalom in Santa Monica, Hoffman’s husband’s synagogue. “It really meant a lot more to me after going through this whole memorial service. Suddenly, I’m part of this network,” Hoffman said.

Johnson’s once-secret paintings depict the zeitgeist of more radical times
“I had no idea the impact he had on the community. At the memorial service, we chose a date to meet about the publication’s survival.” About 30 people showed up at a meeting at the Westside Peace Center on Sepulveda John Johnson, 1944 – 2014 Boulevard in Culver City to discuss Change-Links’ future. Johnson’s last issue had come out in March. On July 4, what would have been Johnson’s 70th birthday, activists Paul Krehbiel and Michael Novick published a commemorative issue. Foisie, who for five years helped place copies of Change-Links at locations including UnUrban, Abbot’s Habit and Abbot Pizza Co., acted as a volunteer distributor. “Change-Links was really concerned about problems that society, humanity faced — trying to bring awareness to the public,” said Foisie, who offered, as an example, 2008’s subprime loan crisis. “A lot of people were losing their homes and John was concerned about getting resources on the situation.” Johnson’s hard work and passion had motivated Foisie to get involved with ChangeLinks and, by extension, back in touch with his family’s journalistic roots. Foisie’s grandfather was Los Angeles Times war correspondent Jack Foisie. His father, Philip Manning Foisie, helped create the foreign desk at the Washington Post and later became the international editor of the International Herald-Tribune. Johnson’s strength, Foisie said, was as an editor. “He focused on investigative journalism,” said Foisie, noting how Johnson enlisted such writers as Naomi Klein, Chris Hedges and Ralph Nader for contributions to the publication. “It was pretty much a one-person job. He did it all by himself.” Hoffman reflected on her brother with a chuckle: “He used [Change-Links] as a vehicle for his passion in life. He was always kind of a rebel. As a student in college back in the 1960s, he tried to get out of the draft. He sat on the fields when planes were about to take off to bring supplies to Vietnam. That was his big arrest.” Understanding Johnson might help the viewer understand his canvases. “It’s not great art, but folk art that really expresses the dynamic of the ‘60s. They very accurately reveal a sense of those times,” Foisie said. The John Johnson exhibit opens at 8 p.m. Saturday and runs through Aug. 21 at UnUrban Coffee House, 3301 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica. Call (310) 315-0056 or visit unurban.com. To help Change-Links continue, call (951) 6389259, email changelinks2@gmail.com or visit change-links.org. michael@argonautnews.com

By Michael Aushenker The Los Angeles progressive community knew the late John Johnson as the activist and writer who published and edited Change-Links, a leftleaning, 10,000-circulation monthly newspaper with an extensive event listings section for myriad causes local and global. What nobody knew — not even Johnson’s family and friends — is that he was also a painter. After Johnson, who ran Change-Links for 25 years, died April 13 from complications following a January heart attack, family members discovered a trove of 15 oil-on-canvas works that he had apparently painted in the late 1960s and early ‘70s. The paintings are very much of the era, including then-controversial imagery of two women kissing and scenes from the peace movement involving protesters clashing with police. The works go on display for the first time on

NOTICE OF FINDING OF NO SIGNIFICANT IMPACT The Federal Aviation Administration has announced that a “Finding of No Significant Impact” (FONSI) and Record of Decision (ROD) has been approved based upon results of a Final Environmental Assessment (EA) prepared in June 2014 for the proposed Runway 6L-24R and Runway 6R-24L Runway Safety Area (RSA) and Associated Improvements Project at Los Angeles International Airport, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California. The following projects are addressed by the FONSI/ROD: Runway 6L-24R and Runway 6R-24L Runway Safety Area Improvements: - Implementation of declared distances on Runway 6L and 6R; - Service roads in the eastern portion of the 6L-24R RSA would be relocated or realigned outside the RSA; - Service road segments would be constructed between Runway 6L-24R RSA and the Runway 6R-24L RSA. - Construct two segments of service roads to access navigational aids east of the runways; - Construct a culvert in a 720-foot long segment of the Argo Ditch; - Close Vehicle Service Roads located within the RSA for Runway 6R-24L; - Relocate two airfield security gates; - Relocate Air Operations Area Fence; - Protect in-pace the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power water line; - Close LAWA construction equipment parking areas east of the runways. Associated Improvements: - Reconstruct the eastern 7,250 feet of Runway 6L-24R including replacement of centerline and touchdown zone lighting, and remarking the pavement; - Reconstruct the portion of Taxiway AA between Runway 6R and 6L, including realignment of centerline lights and new striping; - Realign Taxiway hold Bars on Taxiways AA, Y and Z, including relocation of associated lighting (in-pavement hold bar lights and elevated guard lights), centerline lights, relocation of status lights and hold position airfield signage, removal and restriping of taxiway markings. - Constructing Staging Areas. The FONSI/ROD indicates that the proposed action is consistent with existing environmental policies and objectives as set forth in the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 in that it will not significantly affect the quality of the human environment.
