Letters What’s a left-wing bigot?

Re: “Ad was right to bash Zimmer,” letters, July 24 In last week’s issue of The Argonaut, a gentleman writing a letter used a phrase that confused me. He wrote “typical leftwing bigot.” I am confused because I do not know exactly what this phrase means. I hope someone can tell me the difference between a “typical left-wing bigot” and an “8th-century right-wing bigot,” for that matter. Is it possible that maybe there are bigots in both wings? Surely there appears to be many bigots in Washington, D.C., because there is only a small chance that

the Middle East receives anything but heartache and many representatives are reluctant to give freedom to all citizens under the 14th Amendment’s equal protection clause. The bigotry appears to be spread among all the areas of our society. Even some of our pastors have joined those who want to keep their prejudice in place. Perhaps someone can explain to me why the bigotry is not recognized as it exists today in our “United?” States of America. James R. Buch Mar Vista

The roads aren’t safe for bikers

Re: “Power to the Pedal,” cover story, July 10 The question on the front page: “Are the roadways ready?” From my perspective the answer is no, not always. In Santa Monica the streets are generally better than in, let’s say, Mar Vista. In Santa Monica, city workers are also more responsive to input from bikers like me. I encourage everyone on a bike to be vigilant and look out for trouble. I had a devastating accident in April 2011 on McLaughlin Avenue right by Mar Vista Park that changed my life forever. No other party was involved; the cause was

lack of street maintenance by the city of Los Angeles. As a result I suffered a ruptured bladder. The case is still pending in litigation. The story doesn't mention the countless number of people who suffer injuries because the city fails to fulfill its obligation to provide safe streets and sidewalks. I hope Councilman Mike Bonin reads this letter — my disaster happened in his district! Everybody encourages more people getting around on bikes instead of their cars. That’s great, but more accidents and injures will happen. I’d like to see Councilman Bonin ride his

In the description of the programs coming in the Summer Symphony program, there was mention of the Warsaw Concerto from the 1941 British movie “Dangerous Moonlight” (or, in America, “Suicide Squadron”). While researching in the BBC archives some years ago on a writing project, I came across a recording between a BBC interviewer and Desmond Hurst, the director of the movie. The question asked was “Where did the Warsaw Concerto come from?” The music is central to the entire story, not just a background theme or title theme,

so, as Hurst explained, time was of the essence. According to the interview, Hurst asked Sergei Rachmaninoff if he could write a piano concerto for the movie. The composer replied yes, it would require two years. As Rachmaninoff in his reply had made a point of addressing Hurst by his first name, Hurst responded to “Sergei” that he would need the music sooner than that — six weeks actually. Hurst then took a recording of the Rachmaninoff Second Piano Concerto along with scores for other Rachmaninoff pieces

down to Richard Addinsell, who was living outside of London because of the Nazi Blitz then going on. Hurst asked Addinsell for something that would sound like Rachmaninoff, but without taking anything directly from Rachmaninoff. About two weeks later Addinsell met with Hurst in London to play the two themes he had come up with. Hurst immediately dismissed the first theme, but only a few notes into the second, he said, “That’s it!” Addinsell took that theme and delivered the Warsaw Concerto on time, about four weeks later. The movie is forgotten now, but

the Addinsell Concerto has been popular ever since it was first heard some 73 years ago. Hurst did not mention anything about “Full Moon and Empty Arms” in the interview (which I still have in a box somewhere), but that doesn't mean that Mr. Fetta is incorrect in his statement that Rachmaninoff wanted too much money for permission to use it. We are looking forward to the Aug. 7 Marina del Rey Symphony concert at Burton Chace Park. Barry Wiley Marina del Rey

Kodak Moments Gone Wrong

Santa Monica’s California Heritage Museum celebrates ‘Awkward Family Photos’ By Tyler Davidson

I

t can happen anywhere. School picture day. The prom. Holiday dinners. Hanging out with grandma in the backyard. A family reunion at the beach. Those moments carefully choreographed to look just perfect, worthy of preserving forever in a photograph, that instead turn out to be cringe-worthy, humiliating or just plain … awkward.

Five years ago, childhood friends Mike Bender and Doug Chernack started a blog inspired by a particularly embarrassing photo from a Bender family ski vacation still on the wall of his parents’ home. AwkwardFamilyPhotos.com quickly became the destination website for people to look back on some of history’s more unfortunate family snapshots and do the only thing anyone can about them: laugh. “We set out from the beginning to create an inclusive, family-friendly blog, and I hope we've accomplished that,” said Chernack, a Santa Monica resident. “Our message is that we’re all awkward; we all have uncomfortable moments with our family — so let's celebrate it.” Earlier this year, Awkward Family Photos branched out from the web into a fullscale art exhibit at the California Heritage Museum, the historic 1894 Roy Jones house on Main Street in Santa Monica. The result is a typhoon of bad taste. The wallpaper? Tacky. The frames? Hideous. The photos? Well, you already know … and hundreds of them for as far as the eye can see. The exhibit, which launched in March, has brought record numbers of patrons into the small museum and has now been extended through Aug. 10. There is something to be said of the exhibit’s design, a wonderfully gauche take on old-school Americana in keeping with its theme. Walk up the stairs and you’ll be greeted with the pièce de résistance right there in the stairwell: a family of five piled sideways atop one another, all dressed head-to-toe in nearly matching denim. Other photos are arranged in dreadfully gaudy frames according to theme. Parents, siblings, holidays — there’s even a niche carved out exclusively for patriotism, juxtaposing the Stars & Stripes with fingerless weightlifting gloves and firecracker costumes. Visitors can also drop by a makeshift portrait study to create their own awkward

AwkwardFamilyPhotos.com founders Mike Bender, left, and Doug Chernack took inspiration in embarrassment and created an Internet meme

photos with particularly unfashionable clothing and various ridiculous props. The exhibit came about shortly after Bender and Chernack teamed up with L.A.-based marketing agency The Ant Farm for an ad campaign, when Ant Farm Director of Digital Strategy Angie Behm (who just happens to be on the California Heritage Museum Board of Directors) suggested an exhibit. “Given that the subject matter is family, there’s something really appropriate about doing it in an actual house,” said Bender, a Hancock Park resident. “So we went in and sat down with them, it worked out, and they seemed very enthusiastic. The photos are hung as if they'd be hung in someone's home.” Some of the photos are new, while others are classics of the recently classified genre. There’s the group shot of three stone-faced toughs, showing off matching yinyang bicep tattoos (dubbed “Cobra Kai”), a baby who appears just horrified by simultaneous kisses on the cheek by mom and dad (“The Kiss Off”), and a grandfather decked out in a “Hugs Not Drugs” T-shirt and boxing shorts, his face painted like a clown as he cradles a baby (“The Joker”). In the age of social media, where snark is at a premium, it would be easy to begrudge the success of Awkward Family Photos as mean, even humiliating to its subjects. (“Am I the only one who sees

this as hurtful to an individual?” bemoans one commenter. “It’s not nice to single a person out.”) But to do so is to miss the point. Unlike websites such as “People of Wal-Mart,” whose unwitting subjects have no control over their photos being surreptitiously snapped and uploaded, every photo posted online or framed on the museum wall by Awkward Family Photos is submitted either by the subjects themselves or a family member. “We’re not making fun of people in any way,” says Bender. “Obviously, we’re having fun with the photos, but everybody

Bender. “I vividly remember waking up one morning a few days after we launched and seeing on Google Analytics that we already had over a million impressions for the day,” adds Chernack. “When I tried to get on the site, I wasn't able to because the site was crashing from all of the traffic.” These days, a million views in a month is routine. In addition to filling three books’ worth of content, with a fourth on the way in the spring, Awkward Family Photos has been featured in media as diverse as “The Today Show” and the Al Jazeera network. In fall 2012, it had its own YouTube show in conjunction with Nerdist.com. When the Santa Monica exhibit closes, Bender and Chernack intend to take their show on the road to museums throughout the country. “I don’t see any reason why it shouldn’t keep going,” says Bender. “[It’s] a cross-section of the country, via the photos from the exhibition. And we continue to get new photos, so we can kind of keep building it. ” The Awkward Family Photos exhibit is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays through Aug. 10 at the California Heritage Museum, 2612 Main St., Santa Monica. Tickets are $10, $5 for seniors or students and free for children under 12 years old. Call (310) 392-8537 or visit californiaheritagemuseum.org.

“ Our message is that we’re all awkward; we all have uncomfortable moments with our family — so let's celebrate it.” — Doug Chernack that submits them, it’s in a very selfdeprecating spirit.” It’s a spirit that’s also contagious, with AwkwardFamilyPhotos.com surpassing a million views just days after it launched. “I had a friend who worked for a radio station in Rhode Island, he put it on the radio station's website, and it happened to be a Clear Channel radio station. It got picked up by all the other Clear Channel radio stations around the country, and so it took off in the span of a week,” says

‘It sounded like the world was breaking’ Lightning strikes at Venice Beach kill swimmer, injure 13 others By Gary Walker A 20-year-old swimmer was killed and 13 others were injured Sunday during a freak thunderstorm in which multiple lightning strikes hit the water and the sand at Venice Beach. Nick Fagnano, who attended Santa Monica College last year and had enrolled to attend USC in the fall, was pulled from the water but could not be resuscitated. Of the 13 others firefighters treated at the scene, eight — including a 15-yearold surfer — were transported to a local hospital, one patient listed in grave condition and another in critical condition, LAFD spokeswoman Katherine Main said. A 55-year-old surfer remains in critical condition and the 15-year-old boy is in fair condition, according to news reports. Firefighters arrived at the beach shortly before 2:30 p.m., she said, in response to a 911 call that a beachgoer had been electrocuted. “Everyone who was injured or complaining of some condition was either in the water or near the edge of the ocean. They all complained of conditions associated with lightning strikes,” Main said. Venice resident Roxanne Brown, who was on the beach with friends, said lightning also struck the sand. “I saw two glowing yellow lines that went into the sand about a foot in front of me. It was as if they were beside me,” said

Brown, 58, who recalled feeling a tingling sensation. “It was so surreal. It was as if an electrical current went through our bodies.” Elizabeth Olson, who was with Brown, saw the young surfer being pulled from the water and raced over, helping to administer initial CPR. “He was unresponsive, and I hope he’s all right,” Olson, 59, said of the surfer. “Luckily there was a doctor nearby, and he began giving the lifeguard instructions on how to treat [the surfer] when they arrived.” The lightning strikes, said Olson, who teaches swimming, “came out of nowhere.” Robin Rudisill, who lives off Ocean Front Walk just north of the Venice Pier, was outside in her yard and opening a metal door when she heard a massive bang and felt a shock wave travel through her hand. “I screamed,” said Rudisill, 57. “It was quite scary. It was the most incredible sound. It sounded like the world was breaking.” According to reports, witnesses estimated that the deadly strike that hit the water occurred south of Venice Pier near the Marina Peninsula. Roger Davis, who lives on Driftwood Street south of the pier, told the Los Angeles Times that “the whole place shook” and that a friend who is a doctor

had gone to help treat victims on the beach. Stuart Seto of the National Weather Service in Oxnard confirmed that four lighting strikes hit Venice Beach during the roughly 15-minute storm. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Severe Storms Laboratory, weather conditions on the West Coast produce the fewest incidents of lightning striking a person or the ground in the United States. Rudisill, who heads the Venice Neighborhood Council’s Land Use and Planning Committee, said she was disappointed that there were no public employees stationed near the pier as there have been in past summers, which she said may have helped direct first responders. “There seemed to be some confusion as to what direction they should have gone in. Seconds count in an emergency when you’re trying to resuscitate someone,” said Rudisill, who is also a member of her council’s public health and safety committee. The Venice Neighborhood Council voted on Dec. 2 to ask Los Angeles city officials to install a public address system on the Venice boardwalk for emergency and evacuation purposes, and Rudisill thinks the lightning strikes underscore the need to revisit the concept. “Having a centralized location where

College student Nick Fagnano died when lightning struck the water

people on the boardwalk and on the beach can be notified quickly in an emergency can make a difference in saving lives,” she said. Los Angeles County Lifeguards Capt. Brian Jordan said 10 to 15 companies responded to the scene and performed rescues along the coast. Three lifeguard boats were also called out to assist. Fagnano, who according to reports attended Sherman Oaks Notre Dame High School, had played baseball at Santa Barbara City College. “We are deeply saddened to hear about the loss of a great friend. Nicky Fagnano was an outstanding player and even better person. RIP, Nicky,” the Vaqueros baseball team posted to Twitter on Monday. gary@argonautnews.com

They’re off to the races

National championship youth regatta sets sail from California Yacht Club, helping preserve the future of the sport By Luke Goldstein Whether at home port or visiting from as far away as Bermuda, Canada or New York, each of the racers had one thing in common — a love for being out on the water. There was a palpable hum of nervous excitement down by the docks of the California Yacht Club as the sailors, more than 100 boys and girls ranging in age from 8 to 15, waited near their eight-foot boats for the second day of competition to begin. The United States Optimist Dinghy Association’s National Championship Sailing Regatta, a milestone annual event promoting international friendships and cultivating the future of the sport, began July 19 and wrapped up last Sunday in Marina del Rey. Competitive sailing is a year-round sport for most of these youth sailors, who practice multiple times each week in order to prepare for competitions. At regattas

like these, kids can be out on the water for six or more hours a day with their teammates. “I love sailing because I have a lot of really great friends here and I just get to go out on the water with them,” said Bastien Rasse, 13, who has been sailing for seven years and raced with the Cal Yacht Club team. That feeling stays with many racers throughout their lives, said Cal Yacht Club Staff Commodore Bill Stump, who served as principal race officer for the second week’s individual championship rounds. “I still run into friends that I grew up sailing with; we all connect through the sport,” he said. “You make lifelong friends, and when you go to Europe you find you know people there you’ve met from the races. If you’re playing little league or soccer you don’t get that experience,” he said. Stump has hands as big as Shaquille O’Neal’s and the kind of iron grip that

A young sailor feels for wind patterns during the second round of team competition on July 21

comes from years of pulling and tying ropes out at sea. Stump has been with the club since 1980 and feels that helping run the youth regatta is his way to give back to the sport, a sentiment that most of the 140 other volunteers for this important

race seemed to match. This year saw four international students among the 23 teams of four or five racers each — three boys from Bermuda and a (Continued on page 12) July 31, 2014 THE ARGONAUT PAGE 9

NEWS Shark attack prompts calls for fishing ban

PETA says anglers off Santa Monica and Venice piers could draw the predators into swimmers’ paths ban on the Santa Monica Pier. “As this incident demonstrates, fishing in a populated area increases the risk that sharks will bite humans, whom they are otherwise uninterested in as prey. I hope that — in light of the dangers that angling poses to public safety and wildlife — you'll enact a permanent ban on pier fishing in Santa Monica,” Reiman wrote. Woempner said PETA members have also lobbied L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti for a ban on the Venice Pier. Although bridges, such as the one over the mouth of Ballona Creek in Playa del Rey, aren’t formally part of PETA’s campaign, the organization would support bridge-related fishing restrictions as well, she said. Santa Monica nonprofit environmental group Heal the Bay opposes PETA’s calls to ban fishing, however, as limiting human access to the very waters the group was formed to protect. “We understand that the Manhattan Beach City Council wants something to be done to address the conflicts between marine life and humans, but municipal piers are one of the few places in Southern California where anyone can fish without a license,” said Sarah Sikich, Heal the Bay’s policy director for coastal resources.

By Gary Walker In the wake of a shark attack on a swimmer near the Manhattan Beach Pier, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has launched a campaign to ban fishing on the Santa Monica Pier, Venice Pier and other structures along the Southern California coast. The 48-year-old victim of the Independence Day weekend attack suffered several bites from a great white after a fisherman had hooked the shark and held it on the line for nearly 40 minutes, inadvertently guiding the predator into the man’s path. “Fishing and shark attacks go hand in hand. In many cases, like the incident in Manhattan Beach, anglers are literally luring sharks into the water where they come into contact with swimmers and surfers,” said Alicia Woempner, a special projects manager for PETA. The Manhattan Beach City Council enacted a 30-day ban on fishing off its pier on July 8 and voted on July 15 to extend the ban to 60 days. On July 10, PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman sent a letter to Santa Monica Mayor Pam O’Connor urging city council members to enact a

The Marina del Rey breakwater would be one of only a few legal places to fish if PETA succeeds in its ban

Instead of prohibiting waterfront fishing, Heal the Bay recommends that local governments create a pier and angler program that would educate those who fish about marine life and local sharks, including how to avoid catching them or

how to release them if caught. Heal the Bay currently operates such a program, in which volunteers visit different local piers and also educate people on how to avoid eating potentially contaminated fish.

Legislative response to LAX shooting finds support

A bipartisan airport security bill named for the Transportation Security Administration agent killed during the Nov. 1 shooting spree at LAX passed the House of Representatives by a voice vote last week. The Gerardo Hernandez Airport Security Act of 2014 directs the assistant secretary of Homeland Security to implement a variety of measures designed to improve security at airports where TSA performs or oversees security-related activities. Three other TSA officers were wounded during the one-man shooting rampage, which shut down the airport for 30 hours and caused cancellations of more than 250 flights. “It is imperative that major airports like LAX have a stateof-the-art emergency response system. The safety and security of our nation’s airports and all of the workers and travelers who pass though them is of paramount importance,” said Rep. Maxine Waters (D- Los Angeles), whose district includes LAX. Congress conducted several hearings on the shooting incident, including a field hearing in Waters’ district on March 28. “These hearings revealed serious security lapses at LAX, which interfered with response efforts, such as emergency phones and panic buttons that did not work properly, problems in coordination between various police and fire departments, and incompatible radio systems. These security failures are unacceptable,” Waters said. "I urge my colleagues to support this bill and send it to the president’s desk."

Santa Monica Pier Administrator Rod Merle said city authorities plan to follow Heal the Bay’s example and take an “educational approach” to pier fishing, which he said has been happening in Santa Monica for a century. “It’s a recreational activity, and for some people it’s a source of food,” Merle said. “We’re looking for a balanced approach to sustainable, safe and respectful fishing practices.” Manhattan Beach Mayor Amy Howorth said she isn’t sure whether her city’s ban on fishing would remain in place for long because of concerns about limiting coastal access. Preserving coastal access is a primary mission of the California Coastal Commission, a state oversight body that regulates recreation and development near the ocean. “We cannot put a permanent ban on fishing on our pier,” Howorth said. “One thing that we’ve been working on is adding provisions to our municipal code that would encourage fishermen to fish for smaller, safer fish, and how to keep swimmers safe while people are fishing.” Howorth said she has been working with the Coastal Commission as well as the state Dept. of Fish and Wildlife to ascertain what her council can legally do to regulate fishing. Heal the Bay representatives say they understand the need for those who fish from piers to be more responsible, but punishing everyone for the actions of a few is not a reasonable response. “That’s like banning all cars from the 405 because of a few bad drivers,” Sikich said. Great white shark sightings in the Santa Monica Bay have increased in recent years, according to scientists, who point to several possible factors including cleaner waters and more available prey. “The white shark population is increasing. It is not uncommon now to see young sharks along our coasts in the summer months,” Christopher Lowe, a scientist with the Shark Lab at Cal State Long Beach, said during a January shark symposium in Playa del Rey, less than two miles from the Manhattan Beach Pier. Sikich noted efforts by her organization and others that have helped clean up water pollution in the Santa Monica Bay. “We’ve noticed that over the last five years many species of marine life have been coming back,” she said. “We’re excited to see that the charismatic and mysterious white shark appears to be one of them.” PETA leaders are hopeful that, even without a ban, the Manhattan Beach incident will eventually motivate others to voluntarily decide not to fish off piers. “We hope that people will see this as a wake-up call to protect sharks and other aquatic animals and to not put surfers and swimmers at risk,” Woempner said. gary@argonautnews.com

Car crash at Marina Marketplace pins pedestrian

A driver who failed to stop at a parking space in front of the Barnes & Noble in Marina Marketplace on Saturday pinned a woman to the outside wall of the store, causing her serious injury. Officers with the LAPD’s West Traffic Bureau responded to the 13400 block of Maxella Avenue at just after 3 p.m. to investigate the collision involving an 81-year-old driver who struck an 18-year-old pedestrian with her silver Chevy Malibu sedan. “It was an unfortunate accident,” said LAPD Det. Garry McQueen. “The driver thought she was applying the brake and apparently hit the accelerator.” The victim suffered a broken pelvis as she was pushed between the car and the bookstore and was transported to a local hospital. An outcropping of the building’s façade was crushed. McQueen said the driver has not been charged with a crime but her driver’s license was submitted to the California Dept. of Motor Vehicles for re-evaluation.

Suspicious package ruled a hoax

Mother’s Beach and the Jamaica Bay Inn in Marina del Rey were evacuated Tuesday during a suspicious package scare that authorities said turned out to be a hoax. “Our arson and explosives detail was called out to the pool area of the Jamaica Bay Inn at about 9:50 a.m. to investigate a suspicious device,” said Sgt. Michael Carrilles of the Marina del Rey Sheriff’s Station. “The device was deemed to be a hoax.” The investigation concluded at around 12:20 p.m. and evacuation orders were lifted, he said. Further details about the device were not immediately available.

Pedestrians run down on Venice boardwalk sue city

Three injured last August when a car plowed through crowds accuse officials of negligence By Gary Walker Nearly a year after a driver killed a honeymooning tourist and injured 16 others while plowing through crowds on the Venice Beach boardwalk, three of those hurt in the tragedy are suing the city for negligence. Attorneys for plaintiffs Joanna Botton, Nancy Martinez and Jose Enrique Gutierrez allege that city officials created “dangerous conditions” at the boardwalk that allowed the driver to careen recklessly down crowded Ocean Front Walk on Aug. 3, 2013. “The city knew very well that a tragedy was likely to occur at this location

races...

because illegal incursions of motor vehicles onto the boardwalk were a daily occurrence,” the complaint states. “Even though an incident of this magnitude was foreseeable, they disregarded the public’s safety and elected to look the other way. The cost to install one additional barrier is negligible but led to a poor design.” Nathan Louis Campbell faces murder and manslaughter charges for allegedly killing Alice Gruppioni, 32, and intentionally striking others. Botton, Martinez and Gutierrez suffered debilitating injuries, according to attorneys Matthew McNicholas and Frank Pérez.

“As a result of the lack of common sense and a cheap fix, our clients face a lifetime of permanent disabilities, pain and suffering, constant care, mental stress and financial hardships,” Pérez said. The suit, filed Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court, seeks unspecified damages. The city had not previously responded to administrative damages claims, according to the attorneys. Rob Wilcox, a spokesman for the Los Angeles City Attorney’s office, said the office does not comment on pending legislation. McNicholas and Perez also contend that

Los Angeles officials should have taken a cue from Santa Monica city leaders, who installed barriers at both ends of the openair Farmers Market at the Third Street Promenade after an 86-year-old motorist plowed into shoppers along Arizona Avenue in 2003. Los Angeles City Councilman Mike Bonin called for installing a network of new retractable traffic barriers along Ocean Front Walk after last year’s tragedy but met with some community opposition to the plan. with them,” coach Anthony Gallegos said of the upcoming match with Palm Beach. “We’ve faced over a dozen tough teams from Southern California, so I think we’re ready for the challenge.” “It’s been a fun ride. Win or lose, this is an experience these boys will remember forever,” said Justin Rubin, whose son Luca Rubin plays third base and center field. girl from Canada, who joined together to compete under the Lake Ontario Optimist Team banner. “It’s really nice to have people from different countries come and compete because you have all different kinds of skill levels and it’s fun to meet new kids,” said Georgia Phillips, an 11-year-old from Toronto, who was competing in her first big regatta. Georgia and other serious international sailors often travel to the U.S. to find a higher level of competition than in their home countries. “There isn’t great competition in Bermuda, so if I want to get better I have to go away,” said Mikey Wollman, 14. Unlike other sports that have relatively low financial barriers to entry, the amount of resources available to kids makes a significant difference in the sailing world, which is why the USODA requires that racers in its competitions all use a standardized 35-square-foot sailboat called an Optimist Dinghy. Kids sail these one-man dinghies alone, even during team competitions, when PAGE 12 THE ARGONAUT July 31, 2014

they must strategize with teammates in separate boats. “That’s the neat thing about sailing at this age — there’s no socioeconomic barometer. Even the boats are standardized. These kids starting out are all on an even playing field,” said Kimberly Cudney, Georgia’s mother. As competition from other sports increased, U.S. sailing organizations began to reach out to a more economically diverse population “For young people who don’t have the finances to buy their own boat or even pay to be in a summer program, there are more scholarships available, such as the Santa Monica Sailing Foundation,” Stump said. Although there aren’t nearly enough of those programs to meet demand, there has never been a better time for youth sailing, he said. “If you’re a good sailor, you have a great chance of placing and it doesn’t matter where you come from … even if you’re from Canada,” Cudney said with a laugh as she watched her daughter head down the harbor’s main channel.

The Venice Neighborhood Council is hosting its 8th annual Community Potluck Picnic and Barbeque from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Oakwood Park, 767 California Ave., Venice. Attendees are asked to bring side dishes, salad or dessert to share and be entered in a raffle for prizes donated by local businesses. There will also be watermelon-eating and tug-of-war contests with the firefighters, kids games and live music by headliners Fly N Lion, Kathy Leonardo and the Venice Country Legends, Nehi Thompson, Christopher Hawley and DJ Loboman. The event is intended to celebrate Venice’s uniqueness and diversity, said coorganizer Todd von Hoffman.

Event seeks support for Muir Woods Mural

The Santa Monica activist group Campaign to Save the Muir Woods Mural is holding a free screening of the PBS documentary “John Muir in the New World” on Monday to rally support for efforts to preserve the mural, painted in 1978 at the intersection of Ocean Park and Lincoln boulevards. The mural is at risk of being painted over with different art. Local artists, environmentalists and a representative of the Sierra Club, which Muir cofounded in 1892, are expected to speak prior to the screening. The 90-minute film delves into Muir’s life with reenactments filmed in high definition throughout the landscapes he explored. This year marks a century since Muir’s death. Jason Alexander directs Noah James and Allan Miller in a rehearsal for “Broadway Bound” at the Odyssey Theatre

‘Broadway Bound’ again On a mission to champion its writer, actor Jason Alexander returns to the Neil Simon play he starred in nearly 28 years ago — this time in the director’s chair By Michael Aushenker He’s been there before, but never quite like this. Actor Jason Alexander, who from December 1986 to September 1988 played older brother Stanley in the original Gene Saks production of “Broadway Bound” on Broadway, returns to the beloved Neil Simon play on Saturday at the Odyssey Theatre in West Los Angeles. However, this time, he’s not starring in it, he’s directing it. Forever known for his role as Jerry Seinfeld’s petty and hapless sidekick George Costanza for nine seasons on “Seinfeld,” Alexander has a lengthy history with theater that precedes his television work. In fact, outside of the classic NBC sitcom (1989-98), voicing the titular character of the animated series “Duckman” and gargoyle Hugo in Disney’s “The Hunchback of Notre

Dame,” and a handful of TV and movie parts (including one in Julia Roberts’ career-launching Gary Marshall feature, “Pretty Woman”), the bulk of Alexander’s work has been on the stage, appearing in Stephen Sondheim’s “Merrily We Roll Along,” “The Rink” and “Accomplice” on Broadway and opposite Martin Short in an L.A. stage adaptation of Mel Brooks’ Oscar-winning feature comedy “The Producers.” Alexander won a Tony Award for his work in “Jerome Robbins’ Broadway” in 1989. So why come back to Simon’s “Broadway Bound”? “It’s a play that I love dearly. I actually think it’s his strongest comedy,” Alexander said, a split second later

correcting himself to label it a “dramedy.” What sparked his involvement was catching a production of “Broadway Bound” starring a longtime family friend, Gina Hecht, in late 2013 at the La Mirada Theatre of the Performing Arts. “It was a really admirable production,

“ Real things are going on. There is a razor-thin separation between audience and actors. We’re trying to put you inside the house.” — Jason Alexander especially when you consider that La Mirada puts up its productions in two weeks,” he said. Hecht (who in 2011 co-starred with

Alexander in a production of Simon’s “The Prisoner of Second Avenue” at North Hollywood’s El Portal Theatre) and various cast members expressed their curiosity about Alexander’s involvement with the original production. “They knew I had done it in New York,” he said. “They asked me about my experience in the play and it was kind of inspiring to them.” After the La Mirada run, Hecht and her fellow actors gambled that if they could create it at another theater, perhaps Alexander would direct. “I said, ‘Yeah, it actually sounds like fun,’” Alexander said. “Broadway Bound” loosely autobiographically chronicles Neil Simon and brother Dan Simon as the Jerome brothers, Eugene and Stanley, who aim to break into show business as professional (Continued on page 14) July 31, 2014 THE ARGONAUT PAGE 13

comedy writers. Ian Alda reprises his La Mirada role as younger brother Eugene while Noah James plays Alexander’s Broadway role as the elder Stanley. The La Mirada production’s Hecht returns in this cast, as does Allan Miller. Beyond his connection to Hecht, Alexander told The Argonaut that there was a grander reason why he felt compelled to direct “Broadway Bound.” He believes that, in recent years, Simon’s reputation as a playwright has taken some knocks — never mind the fact that the original production Alexander appeared in became a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in drama and garnered a Tony nomination for Best New Play. “It’s the most complex, most personal play that he wrote,” Alexander said. Back when Alexander was an actor in “Broadway Bound,” Simon did not provide too many insights about the subtext of his quasi-autobiographical play or “the real dynamics between him and his brother,” he recalled. “We never talked about what it meant. I know it was a very emotional experience for him. It was overwhelming at the time. He was questioning whether it was a disservice to his parents,” Alexander said. At the Odyssey, Alexander has enjoyed more than a scant 14 days to assemble this production. Starting informally in late June and applying equity waver rules to rehearsal time, he gathers they’ve had “somewhere close to four weeks [preparation],” he said. “It’s been fascinating to delve into this play,” Alexander continued. “We’ve discovered some things that perhaps were little hidden treasures. The one unanswered question this play, more than any other [of Simon’s plays], has an interesting dividing line: What is a comedy, what is not a comedy? …

Cast members Michael Mantell, Noah James, Betsy Zajko, Ian Alda, Allan Miller and Gina Hecht bring “Broadway Bound” to life under Jason Alexander’s direction

“The scenes can get quite intense,” he continued, likening moments of “Broadway Bound” to an Arthur Miller or a Clifford Odets piece. “It’s a gracefully darker, deeper play, and we won’t know how it plays until we get it in front of people.” As an actor, Alexander has dealt with tonal shifts before — famously, that divisive last episode of “Seinfeld,” a onehour installment for which the situation comedy’s creator Larry David returned. David’s ultra-symbolic series finale, which culminated with an apparent damning of all four central characters to a prison of their own self-absorption, as the conclusion to an otherwise wry, witty, satirical “show about nothing” invited an uneven reception. Alexander said he was too emotionally entangled with the series ending to take stock of the finale’s content. “There’s also a huge difference when you’re inside a piece than when you’re involved directorially,” Alexander said. “For me, it was extremely rewarding because Larry had found a way organically to bring back everyone who had been a part of the show. So, sentimentally, I was so thrilled with that experience.” Yes, most Simon plays have been revived relentlessly on Broadway and in community theater, but Alexander does not feel compelled to put a radical spin on “Broadway Bound.” “There are many plays where the best direction you can provide is invisible,” he said. “The real work on a play like this is helping the actors realize the moment. All the characters in this play are in intense circumstances in their lives.” Besides, by virtue of “Broadway” being bound for this West Los Angeles venue, the Odyssey production will stand apart from previous versions.

“It was never meant to be done in an intimate space,” Alexander said. “When you walk into that theater, you’re walking into that home. You’re not looking at the play, you’re inside it. “This house — this set — dictates so much what’s going on. Real things are going on. There is a razor-thin separation between audience and actors. We’re trying to put you inside the house.”

At the Odyssey, where Alexander believes the audience will skew 50 or older, the actor-director believes attendees “may recognize a piece of their lives in this. This play highlights a generation. I love watching audiences go back in time. It’s a magical thing for them to do.” Moreover, Alexander sees this Westside production as a chance to champion its playwright.

“ On any given day, I know the world of a stage. For better or worse, it’s you and me. With TV and film, there’s a lot of people coming in between you and me. Sometimes those changes make me look better, but it’s not what I did.” — Jason Alexander While Alexander does recall his director’s approach to the play when he was acting in it, he does not feel emulating Saks is necessary or even analogous. “Gene had different challenges,” he said. “It was a new play. A lot of what he was doing was dramaturgy — fixing it through the writing of the play — than the directing of the play.” As for his own experience, Alexander considers himself lucky to have directed some TV and movies. “However, on any given day, I know the world of a stage. For better or worse, it’s you and me. With TV and film, there’s a lot of people coming in between you and me. Sometimes those changes make me look better, but it’s not what I did,” he said. “I went into this business to have a live communication with an audience. This idea of pure communication between audience and artist only happens in the theater.”

“I am waving the Neil Simon banner,” he said. “I’m saying, ‘Don’t write him off. He was a supremely talented human being.’” While some Simon comedies may appear dated, “With this particular play, I think Neil has transcended that. As a comedy and a drama, it shows him for who he really is,” Alexander said. “So, hey, let’s wave the Neil Simon flag a bit!” “Broadway Bound” premieres at 8 p.m. Saturday and runs through Sept. 21 at the Odyssey Theatre, 2055 S. Sepulveda Blvd., West Los Angeles. Tickets are $30. Performances continue at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Thursdays with some exceptions and additional weeknight performances, including pay-what-youcan nights ($10 minimum) on Aug. 14 and Sept. 10. Superba Food & Bread chef Jason Travi, 39, will be at Evening on the Beach alongside Superba head baker Jonathan Eng and pastry chef Lincoln Carson. ”We just want to keep it simple and summery,” Travi said of his offerings for the evening’s menu. “We’re going to be making panzanella — a bread salad.

It’s usually done with bread, tomato, cucumber and onions, but we do it a little bit differently. There’s going to be wood-fired grills at the event, so we’re grilling the bread and mixing in stone fruit [nectarines, peaches and other pitted fruits], onions, almond and balsamic vinegar.” Formerly a sous chef at Spago in Beverly Hills, Travi segued last year to help launch Superba Food & Bread, the latest from the group that also runs Superba snack bar, the Vietnamese street food-inspired restaurant East Borough in Culver City and PitFire pizza company throughout Los Angeles. “The main goal is to help out St. Vincent’s,” said Travi, who used to do Meals on Wheels while employed by Puck for many years. “On top of that, to be able to cook on the beach — it’s hard to say no.” Organizers of both events love the notion of uniting many of L.A.’s top chefs under one roof. “It’s a Westside event and that means a lot for us,” Travi said. “And it’s a pretty great event, so it seems like a win-win for everyone.” Luckyrice Los Angeles runs from 7 to 10 p.m. on Aug. 7 at Create, 6021 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood. Tickets are $88 to $150. Visit luckyrice.com. “An Evening on the Beach” begins at 6 p.m. Aug. 7 at the Jonathan Beach Club, 850 Palisades Beach Road, Santa Monica. $160. A culinary adventure on the canals

Canali Café is a romantic neighborhood hideaway that navigates complex flavors with ease By Richard Foss

Canali Café

123 Washington Blvd., Marina del Rey (310) 822-5379 canalicafe.com The canals of Venice (our version, not the one on the Adriatic) have been a place of pilgrimage for more than 100 years, and it’s quite understandable that local Italian restaurants use the theme in their name and decor. One has a unique distinction — it’s called Canali Café, and is the only one located next to an actual canal. Oddly, Canali seems to be technically located in Marina del Rey, while a Mexican restaurant half a block away has a Venice address. My wife and I strolled past the canal on the way to Canali, and at this stretch it’s pretty unimpressive — a lone heron strolled the muddy bank, but since we weren’t small fish or amphibians it ignored us. The restaurant is more welcoming, with a sunny outdoor patio and a dark, intimate interior. We were served good hot bread, with tapenade and butter instead of olive oil, and left to ponder our selections. The menu is a mix of the standard pizzas and pastas with more unusual items, and for our starters we gravitated to the latter. Three vegan soups are offered daily, and we ordered an artichoke salad along with a rustic bean, cabbage and vegetable soup called riboillita. This is a Tuscan specialty rather than Venetian, a filling peasant dish that is pure comfort food. According to some sources its history goes back to medieval peasants who boiled the bread from their master’s tables along with leftover vegetables, but whenever it was invented, it’s a delight. We debated whether what we perceived as a hint of cinnamon was actually just the flavor of one of the vegetables, and had come to no conclusion when the bowl ran dry. The menu described the salad as being made with raw artichoke hearts, hearts of palm and shaved parmesan with lemon dressing. I didn’t think you could eat raw artichoke hearts; they’re a member of the thistle family and notoriously spiky and woody. When I quizzed our server

Closer Than You Thought! 2014

Canali offers generous portions of intricately crafted meals

Marshall he said the artichoke hearts were very briefly blanched, which makes more sense. They were slightly fibrous but delicious, and the simple lemon and parmesan suited them nicely. The salad was attractively served with a topping of sprouts and a few decorative swirls of balsamic vinegar, a nice touch. We ordered glasses of Gainey Sauvignon Blanc and Crios Malbec rose to start, the latter because I couldn’t remember trying a pink wine made with this grape before. It was a great summer drink, fresh and fruity — not a perfect companion to the lemony dressing, but interesting on its own merits. The bythe-glass menu here is short but well-chosen, and Marshall offered tastes so we could order intelligently. He’s a pro and responded to our questions with enthusiasm, pleased to offer information and suggestions. For dinner we selected spaghetti puttanesca and a special of seafood risotto with pesto, tomato and avocado. I hadn’t had avocado in risotto before, and I wouldn’t have guessed that it would work this well. The mild pesto, creamy avocado and seafood were marvelous with the light arborio rice, and though the flavors were rich the dish wasn’t heavy. This special deserves a place on the regular menu, because it’s the kind of thing I could eat once a week. The spaghetti puttanesca was the opposite of the delicate risotto, a mélange of rich, sharp flavors. The word puttanesca means “prostitute style,” a reference to the fact that the sauce based on anchovy, hot peppers, onion, olives, garlic, capers and tomato

is salty, spicy, cheap and easy to make. Easy to make, yes, but not easy to make well — it’s not hard for such strong flavors to get out of balance. Canali’s was perfect, a powerful blast of flavor without any one element overwhelming the rest. The portions were generous, but we were so happy with everything we tried that we had half of our entrees packed to go so we could see how dessert stacked up. We ordered panna cotta and carrot cake, the latter at Marshall’s suggestion, and were glad we did. The panna cotta was a light and gently sweet pudding topped with fresh whipped cream and a whisper of spice, but the carrot cake was in a class by itself. It was creamy and rich with sweet vegetable flavors offset by nuts and pastry cream, and the carrot shards on top had probably been flash-fried to crisp them. I’m not normally a fan of carrot cake and was surprised to find it on an Italian restaurant’s menu, but I’m now a fan of Canali’s. Our meal for two with four glasses of wine (also a tasty Masi and decent Chianti, each under $10 a glass) ran $95 — remarkable for a romantic dinner only blocks from the beach. As we departed, Marshall mentioned that the restaurant had sold recently, and I hope the new owners recognize what a treasure they have. Canali is a fine restaurant that deserves to be better known, a wonderful neighborhood hideaway.

Better late than never

The Psycho Sisters, performing Saturday at McCabe’s, finally recorded an album after 22 years By Bliss Bowen The common descriptor for a full-length musical recording is “album,” though the old-school term “record” is regaining favor as it is, literally, a record of a moment or experience. In the case of the Psycho Sisters, aka singer-songwriter Susan Cowsill and Bangles guitarist Vicki Peterson, it’s tricky specifying precisely what “Up on the Chair, Beatrice” is a record of. Their first full-length recording after 22 years, the 10 songs on “Beatrice” date from the early 1990s, when Cowsill and Peterson began working together (and endearing themselves to fans with such antics as performing in their nightgowns). Back then, they were touring with Giant Sand and Steve Wynn. The same sibling-like vocal blend that illuminates “Beatrice” got them hired as “celebrity background singers” for pop stars like Belinda Carlisle and Hootie & the Blowfish. Throughout the ’90s they were members of the Continental Drifters, and Peterson’s calendar filled Bangles guitarist Vicki Peterson and singer-songwriter Susan Cowsill are the Psycho Sisters up when she subbed for a pregnant Charlotte Caffey on almost 22 years). “Beatrice” is a solid ear-pleaser, a Go-Go’s tour and the Bangles reunited. Later, with a colorful backstory made richer by the fact Cowsill — who started recording as a young child that the Psycho Sisters are mature, creatively in the late 1960s with her family’s hit-making band, productive women in an industry notoriously the Cowsills — released well-received solo albums, preferential to miniskirted, Autotuned teens and 2005’s “Just Believe It” and 2010’s “Lighthouse.” twentysomethings. It wasn’t until 2012 that the longtime friends and “It’s a different adventure; the trappings are sisters-in-law (Peterson married Cowsill’s drummer gone,” Cowsill acknowledges, shrugging off the brother John in 2003) recorded “Beatrice” at a industry. “We’re making it for music’s sake. If I studio in Maurice, Louisiana. was trying to keep up with the industry, I’d have “It’s like pictures you’re gonna put in a scrapbook gone back to school. It’s too much of a mess. one day but you never get to it,” Cowsill explains. “When you’re young and beautiful and “They deserve to be put in the book and put on the miniskirted — let’s not kid ourselves, that visual’s table. A pith-y return

After a 50-year hiatus, doo wop legends The Safaris are making a comeback as a new a capella quintet

By Michael Aushenker The Safaris’ debut single “Image of a Girl” took the country by storm in 1960, peaking at No. 6 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. Even a Mark Wynter cover scored big that year, charting No. 11 in the United Kingdom. But by 1963, the doo-wop era was over, crushed by the Beatles-led British Invasion. The Safaris went on a long hiatus before reforming nine months ago with a new lineup built around original member and “Image of a Girl” author Marv Rosenberg. “Marv wrote a classic,” said new member Harris Levey, a Venice resident. When Marv Rosenberg’s Safaris perform Saturday at Boulevard Music in Culver City, they take the stage in front of a very different America. Traveling with acts like The Drifters, The Penguins and The Platters, the members of The Safaris were fully enveloped in the racism of the time. “We were considered the only white doo-wop group on the West Coast,” said Rosenberg, who was advised to change his name to “Marv Rose” because of antiSemitism in the South. He recalled encountering trouble when trying to stay at San Francisco’s Grover Washington Hotel. “They wouldn’t let me in,” he said. That is, until a fellow musician of AfricanAmerican descent vouched for Rosenberg

by grabbing the hotel manager by the collar. “That was very, very difficult,” Rosenberg said of performing in segregated America. The Fairfax High alumnus, who quit Safaris after playing the Hollywood Bowl (“My dream had been fulfilled,” Rosenberg said) to pursue psychology, never wrote anything after “Image.” “I’m a one-hit wonder myself,” he said, chuckling. And about the band’s name — that was a producer’s unfortunate call in 1959. “We didn’t like it very much,” Rosenberg said. “In the summer, we had to wear the [pith] helmets and the jackets.” Yet the Reseda resident is happy reviving his act as an a capella group, rotating leads with Ladd Vance, Nick Krall, Joe Wise and Levey on doo-wop chestnuts “Diamonds and Pearls,” “Runaround Sue,” “Why Do Fools Fall in Love?,” “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” and, of course, The Safaris’ “Image of a Girl.” “We’re fortunate to have four voices who can all sing lead, and Marv is a wonderful bass,” Levey said. “He has the history. He brings an authenticity to it.” Marv Rosenberg’s Safaris perform at 8 p.m. Saturday at Boulevard Music, 4316 Sepulveda Blvd., Culver City. $20. Call (310) 398-2583 or visit boulevardmusic. com.

“The real estate market is hot!” says Erik Flexner. “Summer has officially started and, while this time of year tends to be on the quieter side, the real estate market today follows few if any of the traditional trends. Listings tend to move quickly if priced to sell, and there is currently a steady flow of new inventory in our local neighborhoods. Comparisons to previous years indicate the number of homes on the market is still very low. The lack of inventory is a main indicator framing conversations that discuss the pace of many local markets. Feel free to call me if you are curious about what your home is worth.” Information, Erik Flexner, The Flexner Group, Coldwell Banker, (310) 422-2278.

From Carnegie Hall to Chace Park

Yana Reznik brings piano prowess to Marina del Rey Symphony’s culminating free summer concert By Michael Aushenker A couple of years ago, conductor Frank Fetta was readying his Redlands Bowl Orchestra when his pianist fell out. With only six days to go, he needed someone to play Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.” In a pinch, he phoned Yana Reznik. She had played “Rhapsody” before, but ages ago. “We sat down at two pianos. She played it gorgeously,” Fetta recalled. The concert went off without a hitch. “She just wowed everybody,” Fetta said. On Thursday, Aug. 7, Reznik reprises her “Rhapsody” performance at Burton Chace Park when Fetta’s Marina del Rey Symphony Orchestra plays its final free concert for the summer. In keeping with the night’s movie music theme, Reznik also performs a less obvious choice: Richard Addinsell’s “Warsaw Concerto” from “Dangerous Squadron.” Born and initially trained in Moscow, Reznik obtained music degrees from USC and the Manhattan School of Music. She also studied at the Colburn Conservatory. And while the theme to next week’s concert is cinema, Reznik is no stranger to television. The pianist, who has performed at Carnegie

Susan Marie Aylward

Hall, also shared a stage with skeletal robot Geoff Peterson and “horse” Secretariat on “The Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson.” On the PBS-broadcast American Country Music Awards, Reznik backed up Carrie Underwood on a classical interpretation of her song “Temporary Home,” about human beings’ fleeting time on the planet. “It was amazing to work with her,” Reznik recalled. “In rehearsals, she couldn’t get through the piece because she was crying, she got so emotional. She just held it together on the live broadcast.” The good news for Reznik, who married and moved from L.A. to Chicago earlier this year, is that for next Thursday’s performance, she’s had more than Yana Reznik six days to rehearse “Rhapsody.” “She’s the kind of pianist who provides power and grace when she plays,” Fetta said. “She knows how to handle the classics well, but she’s exceedingly contemporary in her approach.” The concert begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, at Burton Chace Park, 13650 Mindanao Way, Marina del Rey. Free. Call (310) 305-9595 or visit visitmarinadelrey.com.

April 6, 1948 – July 27, 2014

Susan Marie Aylward was born April 6, 1948, in Seattle and died peacefully on July 27 at her home in Playa del Rey while surrounded by family and friends after a courageous battle with cancer. To know Susie was to love her. There was not a life she entered that wasn’t changed for the better. Susie was preceded in death by her father Richard Aylward, mother Patricia and brothers Timothy and James. She is survived by her brothers John (Mary Fields), Patrick, Daniel (Debbie) and sister Maureen “Mo” Shaw (Joe) as well as stepbrothers and stepsisters, nieces and nephews. The many friends who adored Susie’s vibrant, ever-cheerful personality are invited to celebrate her life on Sunday, Aug. 10, in Manhattan Beach. Please contact Mo Shaw or Karen Walls for details.

What is the difference between Pre-Qualified and Pre-Approved?

13589 Mindanao Way Marina del Rey SMWYC.ORG 310-827-7692 Contest info: Vickisarandi@aol.com

Many prospective lenders are confused about the difference between pre-qualification and preapproval. Though these two seem similar, and loan-related terms are freely bandied around in financial institutions, there's a world of difference between them which can spell disaster, especially for uninformed mortgage seekers. Many buyers mistakenly believe that if a financial institution pre-qualifies them for a mortgage, it's smooth sailing getting that home loan. Prequalification is in fact only the first step in the mortgage process, and it's a relatively simple one. A buyer supplies a lender with an overview of his/her financial situation, including income, debt(s), and assets. After evaluation, a lender gives an estimate of the mortgage amount that a buyer might qualify for. Usually, there's no cost for this pre-qualification, and many times it can be done online or over the phone. Keep in mind that what pre-qualification doesn't include is an analysis of a credit report or any true, in-depth review of your ability to purchase a home. The most important thing is that pre-qualification does not necessarily mean that you will get the loan. So, why do lenders even go through the prequalification process at all? It's an opportunity for them to weed out the possible from the impossible, and also serves as an opportunity for buyers to discuss their goals or needs, and lenders have the opportunity to explain various mortgage options that might be best suited to a buyer's specific situation. The next step in the mortgage process is preapproval. This step is much more involved. You will need to complete a mortgage application, which usually means paying an application fee, and supply

the lender with all the necessary documentation needed to perform a thorough review of your financial situation and obtain a current credit rating. After extensive review, a lender can tell you the actual mortgage amount you're approved for, along with other necessary information such as your interest rate. Most importantly, after pre-approval, a lender will supply you with a written conditional commitment which specifies an exact loan amount. You will be able to use the conditional commitment as leverage when showing it to potential sellers. Basically, a pre-qualified buyer doesn't have the same weight as a pre-approved one does, since the latter has been much more thoroughly investigated. If you've been pre-approved and you make an offer, a seller will know that the offer isn't contingent on obtaining financing. This will save sellers time, and they really like that, as closing a solid deal as quickly as possible is usually the name of the game. While we're on the subject of the mortgage process, there is one final step we feel compelled to mention. This stage is completed only after a lender has approved you and the house in question. This is known as a loan commitment, which involves appraising the home at or above its sales price, and might entail a look into any structural or accessibility issues that the property might have. At this stage, the lender will once again check your income and credit rating just to make sure that nothing has substantially changed since the pre-approval.
