Editor’s Note: The Best Gets Better Gratitude. The word may be a bit overused in social media posts from Venice Beach, but let’s not abandon its meaning: appreciation of goodness, and a willingness to pay it forward. Westsiders enjoy the pleasure and privilege to live, work and play in one of the most dynamic, diverse and downright inspiring communities in the world. The Argonaut is thrilled to celebrate so many of the people, places and activities that help shape the identity of our community — more than 500 of them! — in this year’s Best of the Westside edition. Thousands cast online ballots to show their appreciation for everything from local restaurants and independent retailers to the people who fix our cars and teach our kids. Now it’s our turn to thank the voters, salute the winners and pay it forward to you. — Joe Piasecki

DANCE REVEALS AN EPIC STORY OF THE FEMALE SPIRIT U.S. PREMIERE | OCTOBER 18–21
Performed by A K R A M K H A N COM PA N Y
PERFORMED IN THE ROUND ON A SOUND STAGE AT THE HISTORIC CULVER STUDIOS
Experience a once-in-a-lifetime dance performance. An ancient Indian epic reimagined through the eyes of women, Until the Lions is award-winning choreographer and dancer Akram Khan’s powerful take of poet Karthika Naïr’s book Until the Lions: Echoes from the Mahabharata. The title of the piece borrows from a popular African proverb, “Until the lions have their own historian, the history of the hunt will always glorify the hunter.”
The story explores the notion and physical expression of gender with the tale of Princess Amba, who, after being abducted on her wedding day and stripped of her honor, invokes the gods to seek revenge. Using kathak, a classical Indian dance, as well as contemporary dance forms, Khan electrifies the stage with raw, powerful emotions balanced by moments of sublime tenderness.

Ancient Greeks may have conceptualized a food of the gods, but it was the Japanese who perfected it. Now, Los Angeles will make ramen its own. If ramen calls to mind the dehydrated noodle bricks endemic to the romanticized poverty and glorious laziness of student life, consider yourself uninitiated. Ramen, done right, is fresh fare. And it’s all about the broth: rich, restorative, soulfilling. Especially the tonkotsu (pork broth), my personal favorite. There was a time when the Mitsuwa food court (still an essential culinary destination) was the lone ramen destination west of Sawtelle Japantown, but now multiple interpretations of the real thing are more easily within reach. Last year’s arrivals of The Ramen Joint and Venice Ramen put Westchester and Marina del Rey on the ramen map with simple, straight-

forward counter service to quickly satisfy cravings. This summer, Gjelina chef Travis Lett and several culinary collaborators took the scene to another level with MTN, a game-changing Abbot Kinney izakaya (Japanese gastropub) with a culinary ecosystem on par with its flagship sister restaurant. It’s time to make ramen a part of your life. — Joe Piasecki

Best Liquid Dim Sum Brewport Tap House 204 Main St., El Segundo (310) 648-8972 | brewporttaphouse.com
Beer aficionados may argue about what styles and flavors will be popular in a decade, but as of 2017 there is no question about the future of brewpubs. Pour your own a sip at a time So you might as well try at Brewport Tap House everything. At Brewport Tap House in El Segundo, drinkers are issued a computer-chipped bracelet and turned loose on a row of more than four dozen beer taps, the bracelet keeping track of what you pour. The idea is to sample each beer until you find out what you like, then pour a full glass of whichever nectar fits your fancy. While cynics may assume the self-service concept is just an ingenious way to avoid paying staff, there are practical benefits for beer lovers. You learn by tasting and can try many things while ingesting only a moderate amount of alcohol — it’s the liquid equivalent of dim sum and other grazing meals. Even better, you and your friends will have plenty to talk about as you sample and compare, so conversation won’t lag. Brewport also serves good and inventive food, making the snacking as enjoyable as the quaffing. The next time your friends are showing off their new iPhones, you can tell them about the way they’ll be drinking when Apple’s latest gadgets are yesterday’s technology. — Richard Foss

Best Surrealist Monday Night Football Party Mo’s Place 203 Culver Blvd., Playa del Rey (310) 822-6422 | mosplacepdr.com
At most sports bars, Monday Night Football is predictable: People on TV will do sportshero things while people in the bar watch, cheer and consume burgers and beer. When the people on TV head for the locker room, the people in the bar stumble home. The people on TV do the same things at Mo’s, but here the people in the bar are just getting the party started. They eagerly await the appearance of bar owner Maurice Krant, aka Mo, who is certain to show up in some bizarre costume to conduct a raffle while cracking jokes, insulting the customers, clowning, and generally being bizarre. You don’t have to like or even understand football to have a good time here, but it helps if you’ve had something to drink. Mo’s costumed antics are a time-honored ritual that only happens on Mondays during football season, which is the reason Mo’s stays full after the game while other places empty out. You’d think other bars would adopt a similar strategy, but it’s not so easy to copy: As any Playa del Rey local can tell you, there’s only one Mo. — Richard Foss

Best Place to Drink in an Alley Alley Lounge
When landmark Abbot Kinney Boulevard gay bar Roosterfish closed down last year — after 37 years on the block — it felt like the end of an era not only for the Westside LGBTQ community, but for Venice as a whole. From the AIDS outbreak of the ’80s through the transformation of Abbot Kinney into one of the hippest (and most expensive) commercial districts in America, the Fish served as a safe space for self-expression and a bastion of gay nightlife west of the 405. Regulars mourned its closure (due to a rent hike) with a mock funeral, wearing black veils and carrying an inflatable Corona bottle in lieu of a casket. But now the dearly departed dive is making a miraculous comeback. After Roosterfish closed, Venice Pride President Grant Turck secured a trademark on the name. When the owners of South End decided to revive the bar, they licensed the name for $40,000 a year — money that will underwrite Venice’s annual free public pride celebrations for the next decade. Last Saturday, Venice Pride hosted a joyous Roosterfish Revived pop-up party with deejays, dancing and drink specials, with patrons coming from as far as Northern California to celebrate. Expect a return to regular hours

sometime later this year — minus the pool table, but with new front windows and the same famous men’s restroom ceiling. — Christina Campodonico
Invite someone to go drinking in an alley and they may consider an intervention. They’ll calm down after you take them to Alley Lounge, a strange and stylish speakeasy located behind popular seafood restaurant Fin. Alley Lounge looks like nothing from the outside, but within is a charming little bar in impeccable mid-century taste. It’s Upscale vintage cocktails never go more than just a pretty out of style room; the drinks are excellent and the soundtrack of soul, hip-hop and R&B jams creates a lively atmosphere. There’s a small food menu, but few selections of beer and wine — you’re here for the cocktails, which are inventive and well made. Yes, this is a hip speakeasy. But before those words send you away, give this one a chance. It’s a fun place for a good drink, well worth taking a trip down an alley to find. — Richard Foss

Del Rey Cup Mar Vista Gardens 4901 Marionwood Drive, Del Rey (310) 398-5763
Del Rey Cup organizer Enrique Fernandez and Boys & Girls Club Mar Vista Gardens Branch sports director Malleke Lord
The Olympic Games is a shining example of how sports can build bridges among strangers and rivals. At Mar Vista Gardens, the annual Del Rey Cup soccer tournament is doing the same for young residents of the public housing project, kids from other neighborhoods and local law enforcement. This year two Mar Vista Gardens teams will take part in an eightsquad double-elimination tournament, with LAPD Pacific Division officers cheering from the sidelines while participating in school supplies giveaways and other family-friendly activities. For the police who patrol Mar Vista Gardens, it’s an opportunity to repair community bonds frayed by the gang violence and heavy handed enforcement of the 1990s. “I want the community to know my officers and for my officers to know the community. We would like to continue to build trust,” says Pacific Division leader Capt. Dominic Choi. Del Rey Cup organizer Enrique Fernandez welcomes the evolution. “It’s great because people get a chance to know the police and the police get to see us as normal people, not just as gangbangers,” he says. “For me, the best part of the Del Rey Cup is seeing kids play soccer and just the environment in Mar Vista Gardens on that day, when people are happy and engaged.” — Gary Walker

Dream your way to San Francisco and back on a Cabin bus
Flying commercial is for the birds, and driving 400 miles on the 5 is hardly a vacation. Why not dream your way from Santa Monica to San Francisco in a private sleeping cabin? The main value proposition of Cabin is to eliminate travel time, or at least having to experience it. Riders board buses, stretch out in their personal sleeping pod and wake up refreshed at their destination. Each sleeping pod is equipped with a blackout curtain, reading light, ear plugs, free Wi-Fi and a power outlet. And yes, there’s a bathroom on board.
Nightly roundtrip service between Palisades Park and the Embarcadero begins Oct. 11, with buses leaving at 11 p.m. and arriving by 7 a.m. sharp. Tickets are $115 each way, including two pieces of luggage and a carry-on bag. Cabin debuted last year as SleepBus, a short test run that attracted a waitlist of 20,000 people and $3 million in seed funding. Now that’s proof of concept! And until Gov. Jerry Brown gets his bullet train or Elon Musk debuts his 600-mph vacuum tube, there’s no breezier way to go. — Joe Piasecki

If you’re like me, makeup can be a mystery. Ask me to apply smoky eyes and I’d probably end up looking more like a raccoon than a sultry minx. Thank goodness for the makeup artists at Smashbox Cosmetics’ flagship store on Abbot Kinney Boulevard. It isn’t a store so much as an opportunity to learn from the pros. The brainchild of Hollywood makeup legend Max Factor’s great grandsons Davis and Dean, the brick-and-mortar Smashbox Venice lead makeup artist Sheena Davis is not just a place to pick up lipstick or darker colors for that soft smoky look; make a fish eyeliner; it’s a complete makeup and photo face when you contour; smile when applying blush studio offering everything from free 15-minute to your cheeks. walk-in touchup sessions to 90-minute makeup “We want to send people home knowing how to and photo services. use the products they purchase,” Davis explains. When I go in, Smashbox lead makeup artist I left not only looking gussied up, but also feeling Sheena Davis shows me a few tricks of the trade: glamorous about my newfound knowledge — use a concealer one shade lighter than your foundation to hide dark circles and brighten your beautified, inside and out. — Christina Campodonico eyes; start with a light eye shadow and layer on

Best Place to Buy Women’s Clothes for a Man Robinson Beautilities 12320 Venice Blvd., Mar Vista (310) 398-5757 | premiereprops.com/robinson
The retro storefront of Robinson Beautilities isn’t a reproduction — it’s just been there a long time. Since 1935, to be exact. Simultaneously a local treasure, community resource and entertainment museum, the cavernous showroom on Venice Boulevard is jam-packed with props, wigs, theatrical makeup and handcrafted costumes by the thousand. Whether you want to be Queen Elizabeth or a drag queen, Hannibal Lecter or Mother Teresa, Robinson Beautilities has you covered. Longtime locals may fondly recall Belle Fischer, who started the business selling fake blood novelties and soon expanded to include stage makeup and costumes. Film producer and entrepreneur Dan Levin bought it in 2009; it blended well with another family business — Premiere Props, which contracts with movie studios to manage costumes and props after films wrap production. That’s why actual wardrobe from “Resident Evil” hangs on their racks, right between the showgirl and postapocalyptic thug sections. A spectacle in its own right, this summer the store was a location for an upcoming (and top secret) Disney project.
You can be anyone you want to be at Robinson Beautilities
If you’re having trouble finding something, ask store manager Eric “Ricky” Raines. His mother worked with Fischer in the 1970s, and he’s been here for decades. In fact, Ricky may be the only one who knows where everything is. And it’s not just for Halloween. Go to work dressed as Scarlett O’Hara and you can just bat your eyelashes when someone asks you to solve their email log-in problems. — Martin L. Jacobs

Many come to L.A. to make it big on the silver screen. At the Ruskin School of Acting, aspiring actors and actresses can actually learn firsthand from the stars. On Saturdays the esteemed Santa Monica-based acting school holds master scene study classes led by the likes of Golden Globe winner Dylan McDermott (“The Practice”), “Friends” star Matthew Perry (a.k.a. Chandler Bing) and most recently comedy star Jim Belushi. The Ruskin School, which specializes in teaching The Meisner acting technique, began offering these master classes 17 years ago, when a student of founder John Ruskin convinced Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins to visit the school. “He was just phenomenal and I could tell he was an amazing teacher,” remembers Ruskin, who then asked Hopkins to teach a class. “He would come every weekend he was in town. I got my idol in the school.” More stars of the stage and screen soon followed. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Mamet (“Race”), Tony Award winner and Santa Monica local Paul Sand, actor Ed Asner (“The Mary Tyler Moore Show”), actor

Ed O’Neill (“Modern Family,” “Married with Children”) and Academy Award-winning director Tony Bill (“The Sting”) have each taught at the school. Master scene study classes run just $400 for an eight-week session and are open to current Ruskin students and newcomers who can pass an audition. Pupils not only benefit from the experience and guidance of these seasoned pros, “they’re getting those life stories — how they came up and kept their careers and became the actors that they are,” says Ruskin. The next session starts Oct. 21. — Christina Campodonico
Audrey and Josh Woolen built their business on love. Really! The founders of Urbanic Paper Boutique began sending handwritten love letters across the continent to keep their long-distance love story moving forward, and the rest is history. Today their quaint Abbot Kinney Boulevard outpost The helpful staff at Urbanic know offers an array of stylish what you’re trying to say greeting cards, stationary, writing accessories and even personalized wedding invitations. There are also gift-wrapping, calligraphy and watercolor workshops for the more active correspondents among us. It’s easy to lose yourself playing with all the fun gift ideas and perusing row after row of beautifully crafted cards, both comedic and sweet. My personal favorite — a card I gave my mom for Mother’s Day — says “I would get on the 405 at 5 p.m. for you.” If that doesn’t say “I love you” in L.A., nothing does. — Gabrielle Flam

Decrypting ‘Finnegans Wake’ Gerry Fialka’s literary detectives group is still on the case after 22 years Illustration by Djuna Barnes
By Michael A. Reyes Scholars have said a lot about James Joyce’s 1939 novel “Finnegans Wake.” Unreadable, fevered gibberish. A linguistic Rorschach test. The internet before the internet. Once a month since 1995, Venice countercultural impresario Gerry Fialka and members of the Marshall McLuhanFinnegans Wake Reading Club have gathered to unpack the mysteries and meanings of Western literature’s most impenetrable tome. The group celebrates its 22nd anniversary on Oct. 3 during its regular first Tuesday of the month meeting at the Lloyd Taber-Marina del Rey Library. Up for discussion are pages 527 and 528. Fialka, formerly an archivist and production assistant for Frank Zappa, says the club isn’t invested in the author’s intended meanings — that’s impossible to know for sure — but unwrapping various layers of meaning throughout. Dozens of languages mix with English, weaving a tapestry of religious, pop culture, literature and mass media references. Puns, riddles, songs, jokes and allusions surface every which way. The plot, of which argu-
James Joyce: author, genius, prankster
ably there is none, is circular. “No ‘Finnegans Wake’ reading club is exclusively about ‘Finnegans Wake,’ because ‘Finnegans Wake’ is about everything,” Fialka declares. Joyce spent 17 years writing the book during a wave of new media technology, and taps into notions of a somnambulistic
populous, no longer attentive to their environments. One possible message of the book is “all you Finnegans wake the F up,” Fialka says. ““It’s about everything that happened and will happen.” The club makes sense of this “everything” by viewing the work through the lens of philosopher Marshall McLuhan and his percepts of media ecology — the study of how media, technology and communication impact human environments. “All media are active metaphors in their power to translate experience into new form,’ says Fialka, quoting McLuhan. To join the club, prospective members need only the curiosity to explore human inventions shaping environments and probing Joyce’s words for what they’re shaping. Once you check your assumptions at the door and commit to challenging your habits, the book becomes a fountain of information, says Derek Gibb, a member since 2004. Participation is key, he says, because it takes a group to illuminate Joyce’s puzzling prose. Each member teaches the others, word by word, often finding meaning based on what pieces of
themselves the reader finds in a given passage. As interpretations are made, every once in a while a member will blurt out “How do you know that?” and everyone laughs. Whether these new meanings are serviceable, isn’t the focus here; it’s about reaching a deeper understanding of people. “Reading forms a community,” Fialka says. Again paraphrasing McLuhan, “The user is the content.” The same goes for the many other events Fialka regularly hosts around town to explore experimental film, poetry, music or comedy. The discussion and what follows is as important as the art. His work is to build community, expanding knowledge from the fringes. “It’s authentic underground L.A.,” says Gibb. “The possibilities are endless.” The club’s next meeting is from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, in the Wenger Community Room at Lloyd TaberMarina Del Rey Library, 4533 Admiralty Way, Marina del Rey. Katie Ferrara has stories to tell
Life’s Little Secrets Fresh off Edinburgh Fringe, street musician and author Katie Ferrara continues her roving journey of discovery By Bliss Bowen A frequent performer at Third Street Promenade and Santa Monica Pier, folkpop singer-songwriter Katie Ferrara has self-published “Stories From the Street,” a book that conversationally recounts her experiences as a “professional busker” across L.A., London and Italy. Along with giddy travel sagas and humbling moments onstage, she shares lessons learned from setting up her gear in places where she wasn’t sure she was welcome: “If you act like you need people’s help, they’re not going to want to help you. But if you act really competent and know what you’re doing, you attract people to your performance.” It’s a handy stagecraft tip that doubles as life wisdom. Ferrara agrees. “A lot of things I learned from performing I apply to my own life,” she says. “I didn’t want the book to be geared only toward musicians. There are stories about how to be a good person.” (The most
poignant is “It’s Not About Money,” concerning a homeless woman in Burbank who upended Ferrara’s preconceptions.) “Through music, I learned all these things

like how to understand people and what they need, and understand yourself.” In 2015, Ferrara was one of half a dozen buskers who won the Toyota-sponsored Feeling the Street competition and were flown to New Zealand to perform at the Queenstown Winter Festival. She’s since performed at the international Ferrara Buskers Festival in Italy, the Fringe Festival in Scotland, and sung under

It’s your job to create that opportunity.” Ferrara, who says she started playing her mom’s guitar at age 17, favors soft
melodies and soothing, uplifting themes in her own compositions as well as outside material she covers by artists such as Natalie Imbruglia, Joni Mitchell and Sixpence None the Richer. She is not busking in hopes of getting signed by a passing label executive. Rather, she’s trying to grow artistically, earn her keep doing what she loves, and hopefully land bigger gigs further down the road. “It may not seem glamorous to some people,” she writes, “but, for me, busking provides a sense of empowerment and adventure.” Performing in diverse spaces from the Westside to Riverside is a good way to get to know different parts of the city, the native Angeleno observes. “I think I appreciate L.A. more than I used to. I grew up here, but I didn’t venture out or do much; I’d just stay in Eagle Rock. Now that I’m going to Santa (Continued on page 70)

passing by and throwing money in your hat and you can play for three hours and make decent money, or you can play a show on the street for a decent crowd. I’ve always played on the street and been in the background doing my own thing. At the festival … you get 30 minutes and you really have to engage your audience. You’re basically playing a show outdoors. People would crowd around and watch like it was a show, and you’d get 20, 30, 40 people standing around you.” While in Italy this summer, she co-wrote a song via Skype with Paris-based songwriter June Caravel; her Ferrara street-side
performance video of “Weightless” is now posted on her YouTube channel. “Playing out in the street,” she says, “I’m learning how to get to know people and be a more compassionate person. Wherever I set up, I’m just meeting random people, and some of those people get attracted to the music because they want that sense of connection and everybody can enjoy it. Whereas at a venue, you have to pay to get in, you’re kind of separate, [and] there are so many people trying to impress each other and not really thinking about connecting with people. I’ve always felt a little like an outcast [laughs]. Maybe that’s why I like to play on the street. I feel like I’m different, like I don’t fit in sometimes. When I play outdoors, people respond to it.” Katie Ferrara plays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, during the Marina del Rey Farmers Market at Via Marina and Panay Way. A Counterculture Cook The Mother of California Cuisine is still fighting for food that means something Photo by Marie Buck
By Bliss Bowen When you consider the food on your plate, what do you see: Microwaved fuel ready to be pumped into your body in a rush, or thoughtfully prepared sustenance shaped by human hands from the bounty of the natural environment? Such are the considerations Alice Waters brought to the national table after founding Chez Panisse Restaurant in Berkeley in 1971. Named after a character in Marcel Pagnol’s films, the restaurant’s convivially elegant milieu and nightly fixed-price menu manifested both Waters’ political beliefs and the Slow Food culture that the future winner of France’s Legion of Honor brought home from her travels. Waters and fellow “intellectual gastronomes” applied intense thought to creative kitchen improvisations — revolutionary at the time, as was the concept of organic food and eating with discernment. The self-described sensualist’s new book “Coming to My Senses: The Making of a Counterculture Cook” evokes fragrant meals in France where she was “awakened to taste,” colorfully depicts an “egalitarian” Georgian farmers market, and wryly shares her “big culinary secret”

of substituting cognac or Grand Marnier for vanilla extract when she was first learning to cook. But rather than recipes, the unabashed Francophile discusses how food became her way of restoring the humanity she felt was being decimated by industrialized food production and consumerism. An encounter with a
cheesemaker in the Pyrenees proves revelatory: “The shepherd called his sheepdogs to round up the sheep, and they all came running down the mountainside. Then he milked every one of them over the course of several hours, poured all the milk into a big pot on the fire, and formed the cheese
with his hands in the warm milk. The work is unbelievable — he ended up with just one single cheese from all of that labor. I loved that you could watch the sheep eating the clover in the morning, then taste the clover in the milk when you drank it at night. The next morning we’d have the ricotta from that milk — the shepherd served it with rosehip jam that his grandmother made from the wild roses from the Pyrenean mountainside.” Waters makes a key observation about the reference guide “Larousse Gastronomique”: “I was fascinated by the process of French cooking, but the book showed, too, that food is about more than cooking; it’s about geography, history, agriculture, tradition, art, anthropology — and nature, of course. It’s something very sophisticated and deep; it’s about culture.” That efficiently summarizes the burgeoning food philosophy that separated Waters from disdained hippie contemporaries in 1960s counterculture. “Coming to My Senses” traces the development of her consciousness — how the Free Speech (Continued on page 72)

Mary Louise Bethel September 21, 1927 to September 18, 2017 Mary Louise Bethel, loving mother, devoted grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully in her sleep just hours after her 90th birthday party on Sept 18 in Santa Monica, CA, with her daughter Mardi by her side. She had an adventuresome spirit that took her to Brazil in 1950. She returned from her travels throughout Brazil in 1953 with her then husband, Henry Friedman, and the electric eels that they had collected in the Amazon Jungle. They set up an Electric Eel show in The Arcade on the Santa Monica Pier and lived in the back of the arcade with their three children Mardi, Denise and Dennis until locating to a house nearby on Wadsworth. After her divorce from Henry, she met “Smokey” (Harry Bethel), a commercial fisherman. They married and continued to create fond memories on the Santa Monica Pier and raise the next generation of fishermen (Dennis, Harry and Gary). At Shoppers Market in Santa Monica they called her the “Smiling Cashier.” She loved to volunteer. In 1972, she assisted with the printing and distribution of materials, “Kitty Litter” as part of an anti-war protest, SOS (Stop Our Ships/Support Our Sailors) on the United States Navy Aircraft Carrier Kitty Hawk. In the early ‘70s as a camp director at the Unitarian Church Camp, De Benneville Pines, she was able to create profitable programs and save the camp from being sold. From 1977-1995 she was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and held many positions including Flotilla Commander. In 2005 she moved to Carthage, Missouri where she made many great friends at the First Christian Church, as a member of the Master Gardeners Society, The Orchid Society and The Fuchsia Society. She enjoyed many hours of volunteering at the South Coast Botanical Gardens in Palos Verdes. Mary was a member of eckankar for approximately 25 years and loved to share her favorite recipes for numerous events. Her cookies were especially loved. Survived by her sister Helen Carlson, her daughters, Mardi Lujan, Denise Fast, Dennis Friedman, Gary Bethel, Harry Bethel and grandchildren, Elizabeth Glick, ‘Otoño, ‘Risa and Naiche, Kiani, and Sol Lujan, Charity and Nichole Hayes, Sara Bethel, Richard, Angelique and Sean Tenanty, and many more great grandchildren. Memorial will be held on September 30th and in accordance with her wishes, her ashes will be taken out to sea on October 1st.

Debra Berman and Pat Kandel RE/MAX Estate Properties Debra Berman’s and Pat Kandel’s names are synonymous with real estate pertnerships. They were pioneers of the real estate team concept starting in 1985, when the team Berman-Kandel was established. The duo had both been producing agents for the Jon Douglas Company, which later was merged and became Coldwell Banker Co. They were often in competition for the same clients, so they decided to join forces and “conquer the real estate world.” They were ahead of the crowd, and spent many years establishing the Berman Kandel brand and teaching other agents around the country how their partnership worked. Their main thrust was to have a partnership based on commitment, professionalism and service to their clients. Berman Kandel have established a tremendous network of other professionals who are ready to help their clients with loans, staging and repairs, all with the goal of making the home buying or selling process as effortless as possible.
