McCabe’s Guitar Shop, Ms Vintage, Café del Rey, KCRW, The Moving Joint, Tompkins Square Bar & Grill, Mao’s Kitchen, Venice Art Crawl, the Westchester Elks Lodge — Argonaut readers know what’s good, and our Best of the Westside voters have chosen a memorable class of 2016. From Santa Monica to El Segundo and everywhere in between, the results of our annual readers’ poll showcase hundreds of local institutions worth celebrating. Also tossed into the mix are a handful of editor’s picks highlighting cool places with really unique offerings that don’t fit well on a ballot — the Best Dinner in a Jar (page 12), for example. Thank you, voters. And congratulations to all of our winners. Keep up the good work! — Joe Piasecki

Best Dinner in a Jar Smart Simple Gourmet Mar Vista Famers Market, 3826 Grand View Blvd., Mar Vista Weekday Pickup Window, 3731 S. Robertson Blvd., Culver City (888) 792-3574 | smart-simple-gourmet.myshopify.com
The seed for Smart Simple Gourmet sprouted in Linda Wong’s head when she was training for a marathon. That’s when Wong began paying closer attention to the food she was eating and started learning about concepts like trans fats and “real food.” And after working in the corporate world for 10 years, she was ready for something more meaningful. In 2008, Wong waved goodbye to her job as an e-commerce merchandiser and enrolled at the Natural Gourmet Institute in New York City. Two years later she launched Smart Simple Gourmet, a weekly meal service producing all natural, nutrient-dense meals for people too busy to cook. Meals range from vegan to paleo-friendly, but almost all of them are served in glass jars, for which she collects a $1.50 deposit until its return.
Linda Wong sets up shop each Sunday at the Mar Vista Farmers Market
The menu changes each month, but popular staples include bone and chicken broths, shepherd’s pie and mushroom barley soup — “hearty comfort food,” Wong calls it. If you can’t make the Mar Vista Farmers Market between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Sunday, head to the retail pickup window in Culver City between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays. — Jessica Koslow

Best Ceviche in a Cup La Isla Bonita 400 Rose Ave., Venice (310) 663-6603 | facebook.com/ LaIslaBonitaTacoTruck
Chances are that any time you stop by La Isla Bonita on Rose and 4th avenues in Venice, there will be a line. Any time. Whether it’s lunchtime on a weekday or a bustling Saturday afternoon beach day, everyone — local residents, shirtless tourists, office La Isla Bonita offers fast service workers, day laborers, the with a smile unfortunate souls who call the surrounding streets home — knows about the family-run taco truck that’s been serving the best ceviche in a cup for 29 years. But that line moves quickly: brother and sister team Brenda and Joseph take and pack up every order in record speed. Their out-of-this-world ceviche comes in three sizes: small ($7.50), medium ($10) and large ($12.50). It’s a tasty combo of sea bass, onions, tomatoes and cilantro, and comes with crispy corn tostadas, slices of lime, avocado, hot sauce and hot peppers. Eat it truckside and they’ll plate it, or take it to go. Just remember that the truck is cash-only and is open from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day except Thursday. — Jessica Koslow

Forget TV. The future of the small screen is happening right here in Playa Vista at YouTube Space L.A. — a 41,000-square-foot creative campus with seven video production stages, broadcast-quality control rooms, private editing suites and a vault stocked with top-quality media equipment. At YouTube Space L.A., today’s media entrepreneurs don’t wait for a call from Burbank. They make magic happen for themselves — just like Shira Lazar. She’s the creator and host of “What’s Trending,” a live interactive talk show and video blog with a YouTube channel boasting more than 300,000 subscribers. Lazar has built up enough online cred to be a regular around YouTube Space L.A., sometimes even recording live concerts in the space’s dedicated sound stage. If there’s a dedicated town center for the video community, this is the place — and Lazar is right in the middle of the action. — Joe Piasecki

Best Place to Dance with Your Baby in Utero Happy Baby 353 Main St., El Segundo (424) 218-9774 | happybabyla.com
Prenatal dance classes are moving and shaking their way into the birth plans of expectant mothers, and what better place to do it than a dance studio founded by moms? “Our hope is that we can help parents raise happy, healthy babies while also caring for their own body and mind,” says Erin Fagerlind, who cofounded the Happy Baby yoga and wellness center with Brandi Sharkey (both of whom gave birth for a second time this month). On Tuesday nights, Happy Baby hosts prenatal dance classes by certified pre-/postnatal fitness instructor Nicole “Dancing Moon” La Cour-
Wordlaw, a professional dancer who discovered the benefits of prenatal dance during her own pregnancy. La Cour-Wordlaw leads her students through breathing, stretching and affirmations before turning up the grooves — West African, Latin, Caribbean, hip-hop, swing and, of course, belly dancing! “My classes focus on stamina, endurance, strength, flexibility, cardiovascular and respiratory health, relaxation, trust in one’s body, community and sisterhood — and some helpful tips for labor, delivery and parenting,” she says. — Tiffany Walton

Best Way to Meet Someone at Your Own Pace
Best ‘Clean’ Candy
A Real Treat Candy Boutique
L.A. Leggers 1450 Ocean Ave., Santa Monica (424) 253-4437 | laleggers.org
The L.A. Leggers running club has been L.A. Leggers take it to the streets motivating people to cross the finish line for more than 25 years, but each outing is a new adventure on the way to your personal best. Leggers meet at 1450 Ocean every Saturday for a run along the beach from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. Training for the L.A. Marathon starts in August with a two-mile run, then the distance increases by a mile each week until the big event. Each pace group is led by a mentor to keep everybody motivated and on track toward their individual goals. Informal runs happen throughout the year, and the Leggers also host sweat-free social events to remind members that running isn’t just hard work, it’s also fun. These include marathon-watching parties at local pubs, movie screenings, group beach cleanups and outings to Dodger games. Membership ($75/year) includes a running shirt, goody bag, personalized training plan and admission to guest lectures on everything from pre-run stretching and nutrition to post-run recovery. More than a running club, the L.A. Leggers are a support network — a group of friends who won’t leave you behind on the way to the finish line. — Nicole Payne

Vanessa Hughes and daughter Bailey
Let’s be clear: It’s still candy — or as A Real Treat Candy Boutique owner Vanessa Hughes likes to call it, a treat. But these sweets are free of corn syrup, artificial colors, artificial flavors and many common food allergens. Instead, the sugars are from cane, coconut and maple. So it’s not health food, but it is better for you. Hughes and her husband opened their shop on Main Street about 18 months ago after a long and difficult search to find healthier candy options for their young daughter. A Real Treat gives priority to stocking
goodies from Southern California candy makers, like Torrance-based Nohmad Snack Co.’s paleo chocolate, which is great for people with gluten, dairy and soy allergies. New on the shelves is a non-GMO, gluten-free, nut-free and vegan kettle corn in three flavors: Sweet & Salty, Butter Me Up and Cinnamon Bun. A Real Treat’s latest bestseller is the Seely Mint Patty, made with heirloom mint oil from a thirdgeneration mint farm in Oregon — sort of like a Peppermint Patty or Thin Mint, but “cleaner.” — Jessica Koslow

Best Place to Make a Plan and Stick to It The ‘Before I Die’ Wall 8700 block of La Tijera Boulevard, Westchester beforeidie.cc

Metro Proposes Measure M On November 8, 2016, LA County voters will be asked to authorize a Los Angeles County Traffic Improvement Plan called Measure M. Currently, there are 10.2 million people living in LA County, and we are projected to grow by 2.3 million people in the next 40 years. Angelenos spend an average of 81 hours a year stuck in traffic, and congestion and air pollution are expected to get worse with more growth. The measure is intended to raise funding to meet those needs. Get educated before you vote at metro.net.

Winning at the Game of Life
The Del Rey Cup makes community happen one goal at a time By Gary Walker Standing on a playing field in Mar Vista Gardens, Enrique Fernandez allowed himself to dream that a neighborhood soccer tournament could become a beacon for unity and revitalization. “I can remember thinking that if we could just get people to come and play soccer, that would be the start,” recalled Fernandez, who grew up in the public housing complex and now serves on the Del Rey Neighborhood Council. “If we could get people interested in coming to Mar Vista Gardens, we could get the community to take a look at what we’re trying to do here, which is give people hope and make Del Rey a better place.” That was seven years ago. Now one of Del Rey’s biggest annual community events, the Del Rey Cup returns on Saturday bigger than ever. What started as a small local soccer tournament with a back-to-school supplies giveaway has become a draw for not only youth from outside the neighborhood, but also local police. For the past two years, Fernandez has welcomed members of the LAPD’s Pacific Division to the festivities at Mar Vista Gardens — once home of the
Kids compete in last year’s Del Rey Cup notorious Culver City Boyz, which remains under a city gang injunction. LAPD officers who are involved with the Del Rey Collaborative, an effort to strengthen bonds between law enforcement and residents, will be at the tournament to watch the games and interact with players. This year six to eight teams of kids ages 9, 10 and 11 will compete in a doubleelimination tournament on two fields. For the third year in a row, the tournament features co-ed teams. “We went to that format so it would be worthwhile for teams from outside Del Rey to want to play in the Del Rey Cup. We wanted to make it competitive this
year,” said Fernandez, a former youth sports coach. Malleke Lord, who’s coaching the Mar Vista Gardens All-Stars and also serves as athletic director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica, said the Del Rey Cup gives neighborhood youth an opportunity to test their skills in a friendly environment. “Soccer is one of the most popular sports among our kids. We average about 150 kids who come to the club to play Mar Vista, Del Rey and Culver City in the summer,” Lord said. As in prior years, the Del Rey Neighborhood Council is giving school supplies to students who live in Mar Vista Gardens, as well as other tournament players who may be in need. “We view it as an opportunity to further community activities and showcase our civic pride while giving back to the public by fostering and supporting our youth,” Del Rey Neighborhood Council President Scott Dellinger said. Mark Redick, a former Del Rey Neighborhood Council president who’s now vice-president of the Neighborhood Council of Westchester-Playa, was among the Del Rey Cup’s biggest
supporters when it started in 2010. He credits Hernandez with much of the improvement that he’s seen at Mar Vista Gardens over the last five years. One of the enhancements that Redick points to is the acquisition of outdoor lighting for the playing fields in 2010, paid for with funds that local developers must pay toward park improvements in exchange for the right to build. Children can now play at night during the summer, and the park is alive again with activity. “Many residents didn’t believe me when I told them that I would try to get new lights for the park,” he recalled. “Now we have softball tournaments with the police department, which I think minimizes the tensions that people have sometimes with the police and former gang members who are trying to walk a straight line.” For Fernandez, the Del Rey Cup has made possible what he always hoped: building community bonds through sports. “It’s grown into a real community event,” he said, “just like I wanted to see it become.” The seventh annual Del Rey Cup begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at 4901 Marionwood Drive in Del Rey.

A scene from Tim Robbins’ “Harlequino: On to Freedom” with actress Lee Margaret Hanson at center
All the World’s His Stage Tim Robbins has found the role of a lifetime in running The Actors’ Gang, a small experimental theater in Culver City that’s making a big difference in schools, prisons and the artistic community By Christina Campodonico Tim Robbins is best known for his roles on the big screen — unjustly imprisoned Andy Dufresne in “The Shawshank Redemption,” up-and-coming pitcher Nuke LaLoosh in “Bull Durham,” self-obsessed Hollywood exec Griffin Mill in Robert Altman’s “The Player” and murder suspect Dave Boyle in Clint Eastwood’s “Mystic River.” Even in L.A., you wouldn’t expect to see him outside an industry setting, let alone pouring $5 drinks — unless, of course, it’s in The Actors’ Gang lobby at Culver City’s historic Ivy Substation. In a blue button-up shirt and spectacles, the 6’5” Robbins looks right at home behind the bar, leaning in, smiling and talking with theatergoers who’ve just come out of a Saturday night performance of “1984,” which he’s directing at The Actors’ Gang through Oct. 8. For the Academy Award-winning movie star and Venice Beach local, the
99-seat theater is a creative base camp — an R&D lab where he tests out theatrical works with a company of 40 actors. Each Sunday the group convenes

The perspective shift is life-changing.” — Tim Robbins for a five-hour workshop in which they “suit up” into a community of characters, work through plays in development, and practice their signature “style” — a fusion of techniques from Italian theater called commedia dell’arte, Ariane Mnouchkine’s avant-garde Théâtre du
thing in Hollywood,” says Robbins, who has used his earnings from film and television over the years to support the theater. “I had a laboratory. I had a place to go back to where I could experiment with new forms. I could work on a satire. I could write and direct.
Robbins co-founded The Actors’ Gang in 1981 with UCLA theater department classmates and members of his intramural softball team. “We were a group of young, energetic, slightly anarchic punk rockers who wanted to do a different kind of theater than the theater that was being promoted at UCLA,” says Robbins, who was interested in exploring genres and styles outside of the American realism being touted at the time. The group started off in Hollywood, staging madcap midnight showings of Alfred Jarry’s 1896 French play “Ubu the King,” — “a crazy, scatological, Dadaist piece,” says Robbins — that ran for six months to sold-out houses and rave reviews. Robbins then adopted commedia dell’arte as a framework for his company’s training after taking a workshop (Continued on page 70)

with Théâtre du Soleil’s George Bigot during the 1984 Olympic Games’ L.A. Arts Festival, where he learned from Bigot that “great theater is made of extraordinary events and a commitment — a complete commitment — to emotion.” After taking a brief step back from The Actors’ Gang in the late 1990s, Robbins returned as artistic director in 2001 and moved the company to Culver City in 2005. Robbins says it takes “persistence, relentless commitment and a certain amount of stubbornness” to sustain a theater company in Los Angeles for 35 years. But he also feels that running a performing arts institution also entails a large degree of responsibility and public service. “Arts organizations can’t be insular,” says Robbins. “I believe cultural organizations have to approach their longevity with the idea of a certain amount of responsibility. … And that responsibility can’t simply be giving students tours of your theater or lowprice tickets. That responsibility has to be involving your artists in the education and wellbeing of the community you exist in.” This is exactly what The Actors’ Gang
does. In addition to staging and touring plays, the company also runs education programs in 10 Culver City or LAUSD schools, holds a free after-school program for elementary and middle school kids, and works with inmates in the California prison system through an initiative called The Prison Project. Directed by Actors’ Gang member Sabra Williams, The Prison Project uses the core emotional principles of commedia dell’arte and Théâtre du Soleil — happy, sad, afraid and angry — in its drama workshops in order to help inmates, who’ve been conditioned to hide their feelings or rely solely on anger, engage with the full range of their emotions. “The work is about giving them tools to manage their emotional lives … so it becomes a gymnasium for their emotions,” says Williams, adding that there is an 89% reduction in prison infractions by inmates who go through the program. “It’s a safe space to heal their emotional trauma.” Even Robbins — who proudly shares that the program, according to a preliminary study, has also substantially reduced recidivism rates among participants — jumps in to direct and lead the prison workshops. “A lot of celebrities put their names on things for the publicity, but Tim is not
PAGE 70 THE ARGONAUT September 29, 2016
doing that. He’s really dedicated to this work. When he comes to a prison, he comes to teach,” says Williams. “It’s the real deal.” Robbins, 57, expects the same level of commitment to public service from his actors. It’s not required for The Actors’ Gang members to volunteer, but it’s certainly encouraged and engrained into the company’s ethos. “We have an understanding with our actors that part of what it is to be in The Actors’ Gang is to commit to some kind of volunteerism, whether it’s to sustain the theater or to write grants or to participate in our education programs,” says Robbins. “I believe it’s essential, not only for the wellbeing of the community but the wellbeing of the organization itself. “When you work with people that have nothing — without education, without any kind of artistic programs in their schools, or without any kind of rehabilitation programs in prison — your perspective on what’s important really shifts. It’s really difficult to deal with the self-indulgence and narcissism of an actor after you’ve spent a day working with a guy who’s on life without parole. The perspective shift is life-changing. It makes you understand the inherent power that creative programs have and how a commitment to this view of what art is
and can be fundamentally shifts the art you produce and the kind of artists producing the work on our stage.” The Actors’ Gang fall programming for its ongoing Season of Justice continues the thread of such sociallyconscious work. “The Exonerated,” a play about six former prisoners freed from Death Row, follows the current run of “1984” — itself a haunting reimagining of the cell-like Room 101 in Orwell’s dystopian novel. “Harlequino,” written and directed by Robbins, delves into notions of freedom and the philosophical underpinnings of commedia dell’arte, and will tour China in November after a late October run at The Actors’ Gang. This October, Robbins and company are also pulling the curtain back on the group’s creative process by opening up its Sunday workshops to the public for “The Refugee Project,” a work currently in development with a title that evokes major human migrations happening around the world right now. “Tim is really hooked into the zeitgeist in a way that I’ve never seen before,” says “Exonerated” director Cynthia Ettinger, also co-artistic director of The Actors’ Gang. “He somehow seems to choose projects that a year or six months ahead of time don’t seem as relevant, and then suddenly they become relevant right when we’re about to open.” While Robbins contributes big ideas to help shape the artistic agenda of The Actors’ Gang, he also spends a lot of time doing small, everyday tasks to keep the theater going. “I’m always saying I wish we were taking a picture of him vacuuming right now, or sorting all these different sizes of nails,” says Ettinger. “The public just has no idea the amount of love and care he puts into this theater. … He’s just incredibly dedicated to it.” For Robbins, the work itself — and its impact both on stage and off — is the greatest reward. “At this point, I only want to be working on material that I feel is elevant to the world we’re living in. I have no real interest in being on a movie set for the sake of being on a movie set. … I find great inspiration from the work I’ve been doing in the prisons, in the schools and on the stages of The Actors’ Gang,” says Robbins. “I probably am happier now than I ever have been creatively.” The Robbins-directed production of “1984” continues at 8 p.m. Thursdays, 9 p.m. Fridays and at noon on Sundays through Oct. 8 at The Actors’ Gang, 9070 Venice Blvd., Culver City. Tickets are $30 to $35. The next sessions of “The Refugee Project” happen at 7 p.m. on Oct. 2 and 16. “The Exonerated” runs Oct. 13 through Nov. 4. Four Great Oyster Happy Hours

Herringbone’s oysters are just $1 each during happy hour
By Jessica Koslow Herringbone Herringbone is huge — like “hard to find your friend” huge. There’s the restaurant on the left side, and to the right a bar, patio, lounge, couches and the Salt & Brine bar. It’s here on the right that Happy Hour happens from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Oysters are just $1 each on the abbreviated menu, which also includes small bites and drink specials. And now there’s a lunchtime happy hour with $1 oysters from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on weekdays. The oysters aren’t all that’s delicious here — try the grilled pork belly with braised lentils, charred scallion and maple mustard, as well as the chicken ‘wangs’ with truffle soy ginger glaze or buffalo style. Because of Herringbone’s size, intimacy can get tossed aside. For parties of two or three, the best bet is saddling right up to the Salt & Brine bar. 1755 Ocean Ave., Santa Monica | (310) 971-4460 herringboneeats.com
