Shooting stokes safety fears in Del Rey

By Joe Piasecki Los Angeles police have ruled that a Del Rey homeowner who shot and killed a violent homeless intruder on Sept. 30 acted in legal self-defense, but the incident has left neighbors calling for more action to address the area’s homeless population. Police say 27-year-old Hunter Merkel, who died in the shooting, had been homeless in the area for about six months prior to attacking several people that night and confronting the armed man inside a garage on the 4700 block of La Villa Marina, part of the upscale 685-unit Villa Marina housing development. Merkel was in the garage beating up a tenant with whom he’d had previous contact with when witnesses alerted the homeowner, Los Angeles police Det. Terry Keyzer said. “The homeowner grabbed his registered firearm and came down the stairs into the garage, where he saw Merkel. Merkel produced a knife and came at the homeowner, and the homeowner shot him once in the chest,” Keyser said. The shooting occurred at around 8 p.m., about an hour after Merkel had assaulted two men in a grassy area bordering the Marina (90) freeway and robbed one of them of a flashlight, she said.

By Gary Walker A resident of the 246-unit Breezes Del Mar affordable housing complex in Venice for nearly three decades, Kendra Moore has raised four daughters and three grandchildren at her Indiana Avenue apartment and formed lasting relationships with many of her neighbors. But she and thousands of other public housing tenants on the Westside are bracing for life-altering consequences of anticipated rent hikes next year due to cuts in federal affordable housing subsidies. The rent subsidy voucher reserves of the Housing Authority of the city of Los Angeles are expected to run out before the end of the year, forcing a program drawdown that could leave tenants like Moore paying about $200 more in rent each month, said housing authority President Douglas Guthrie. “This has been a very difficult year,” Guthrie said. “I expect our Section 8 reserves to be depleted by the end of the year. Continuation of [federal budget] sequestration and funding at current levels will leas to lower subsidies for our Section 8 [rent voucher] participants.” That affects more than 1,000 tenants of both Breezes Del Mar, the largest federally subsidized housing development west of Lincoln Boulevard, the 600-unit Mar Vista Gardens in Del Rey, as well as those living in other buildings that accept Section 8 (Continued on page 10)

Letters Airport an underrated local treasure

Re: “Close the Santa Monica Airport…with a caveat,” (guest opinion, Oct 10) Thanks to Odysseus Bostick for pointing out what is often passed over by Santa Monica Airport detractors but is known well by the Federal Aviation Administration — that Santa Monica’s is the only regional airport built on bedrock and equipped to provide vital emergency services in case of an earthquake or another natural disaster. We are all safer because the airport is there. But there’s more. When was the last time you

visited Santa Monica Airport and witnessed the considerable resources that exist there? Meet me for lunch on the patio of the Spitfire Grill and let’s talk and explore the airport past and present. The airport has been here for nearly 100 years. The Douglas World Cruisers took off on the first around-the-world flight from the grass runway at Santa Monica on March 16, 1924, and returned Sept. 23 that year to a runway covered with rose petals and a cheering crowd of more than 200,000 people. Through the years the airport was home to the Douglas Aircraft Company, which later merged to the McDonnell VOL 43, NO 43

Douglas, providing aerospace jobs for thousands of employees through 1979. You would be hard-pressed to find more than a handful of current local residents whose families don’t come from that early heritage. The airport today continues to provide jobs and community resources, including a Santa Monica College campus, art galleries, restaurants, a community theatre, educational programming at the Museum of Flying and Douglas DC-3 monument, sports fields, parks, walking trails and a world class dog park as well as numerous offices, airport operations and event spaces all bringing visitors and revenues to the city. The airport was here when residents decided to come here. It is unfortunate that building permits were granted for houses to be built less than 100 feet from the runway, but their existence need not be cited as a reason to close the airport. Instead of rushing to judgment with talk of closing the airport, why not consider the tremendous safety, employment and other resources the airport provides

for the community and look at other solutions, such as installing barriers and clearing a safe zone next to the runway by moving houses considered at risk. Beverly Hoskinson Mar Vista

Re: “Roadwork requires patience, not venom,” letters, Oct. 17 I’m sure people are tired of hearing about road construction on Admiralty way, but I read Patricia Harris’ letter and had to say something: Insulting the workers is definitely wrong, but getting any public employee to respond is impossible. I did contact the L.A. County Department of Public Works to ask questions about the current roadwork and the potential for future problems. I talked to the person in charge of the project via telephone and she took my email and my home phone number and promised to get back to me. It has been nearly

two weeks, and so far not a single word. There is a trench on the sidewalk next to the library where the sidewalk is closed and it has been that way for weeks, forcing pedestrians to step into the path of traffic to get to the Marina Del Rey Library. Why isn’t it finished? Again, no one at public works seems to care. How hard is it for someone to get back to a member of the public? Frankly this speaks poorly of public employees and their attitude. I am curious why they have two signs that state “Left Lane Closed Ahead” up 24/7 right across from the RitzCarlton when the left lane is not closed? That strikes me as a bit of laziness on their part. Taking those signs down on the weekend would take about 45 seconds. If this project results in better access for disabled people, that’s great. But if months of madness and chaos just give us better islands, I’m not convinced the pain is worth the result. I want the Marina to be beautiful, but I want public planners to be responsive and smart in their planning. Ron Gregg Marina Del Rey

vouchers. For some of those living on low and fixed incomes, $200 could be enough to put some people out on the street or going without other necessities. “My family and other families could lose everything if there are more cuts,” said Moore, 48, who works as a receptionist for the Santa Monica Boys & Girls Club and is president of Breezes Del Mar’s tenant action committee. Guthrie said his agency as lost $46 million to the automatic federal spending cuts triggered by sequestration in March, a deficit that will continue to expand if reduced federal funding continues through January. Bill Przylucki, executive director of the nonprofit People Organized for Westside Renewal in Santa Monica, said the recent federal government shutdown and postponement of Congress’ debt ceiling battle to January has

stoked fears of even larger cuts to affordable housing supports. “If [the shutdown] had continued the government would not have continued to pay the landlords, and tenants could have been in danger of being evicted,” Przylucki said. Even under the status quo, “At some point there has to be another investment in public housing if we’re going to see these programs work,” he said. Rep. Maxine Waters (DWestchester), a member of the House Financial Services Committee, lamented cuts in federal housing supports. “This is going to affect many of my constituents, but I promise that I will do all that I can to make sure that any further cuts will not be as severe,” she said. If they do continue, “Where are people going to go?” asked Moore. § Gary@ArgonautNews.com

LAUSD board member Steve Zimmer is pushing state officials to review charter school facility polices.

LAUSD wants new charter school rules Westside board member Steve Zimmer says state officials should rethink some allowances for charters to share campuses with public schools By Gary Walker In an effort to alleviate what he called unintended consequences of a voter approved initiative that has disproportionally hit Westside schools, Los Angeles Unified School District board member Steve Zimmer is asking state lawmakers to consider amending Proposition 39. Proposition 39 provides charter school operators with

the right to use space within public school campuses where classrooms are vacant or underutilized. That situation — commonly referred to as co-location — has prompted conflicts over facility use and accusations of student recruiting at several schools in the area. Zimmer’s resolution was approved the LAUSD school board last month,

meaning it’s now up to the state Board of Education, the state superintendent of public education and the Legislature to review for possible action. “It had reached the point where I was very frustrated with folks coming to the school board with real complaints [about collocation] and us throw up our hands and say, “There’s nothing we can do. It’s a state issue,’” Zimmer explained. “That’s kind

homeless from gathering in the area. “It’s kind of like shoveling sand at the beach. Until we get it from all angles, it’s a tough situation for us to police,” Johnson said in response to calls by several residents for police to cite and detain homeless people in order to drive them from encampments. But to do that would tax law enforcement resources and violate their rights, Johnson said.

of a cop-out.” Charter schools are publiclyfunded but do not operate under the same regulations and union agreements as traditional public schools The resolution asks state law makers to reexamine the impacts of the proliferation of charters and how co-locations have impacted charters as well as traditional schools. It also calls on LAUSD Superintendent John Deasy to report back to the board this month on policies regarding “the solicitation of transitional school children on LAUSD grounds for the purposes attending charter private or other non-LAUSD schools.” But Zimmer doesn’t mince words that the resolution stems from the wider battle for resources between public schools and charters. His resolution also calls for study of whether charters use co-location to poach students from public schools, where lower headcounts mean less state funding. “We really are very much taking this moment to ask the district to use the full resources of this district to not only fight Prop. 39 in court but to basically petition the state for readdress,” Zimmer said. Representatives from the California Charter Schools Association were present when Zimmer called for his resolution. “LAUSD has lots of options for parents, and we believe that parents deserve to have as much information about what all of those options are,” said Sierra Jenkins, a spokeswoman for the charter association. The impacts of Proposition 39 have become, in Zimmer’s words, “almost a LAUSD

And due to jail overcrowding, tickets for panhandling (which also require witnesses to go to court) or trespassing in the wetlands — even when they go to warrant — don’t result in time behind bars. “We take them in, they get a free meal, and they’re out,” Johnson said. Rather, police must rely on cooperation from state officials to help secure and supervise the state-owned wetlands, he said. During the meeting, members of the Noarus Auto Group proposed converting a problematic strip of land along the Marina Freeway and Mindanao Way into a parking lot as a way to keep trespassers out. Noarus Auto Group, which owns Marina del Rey Toyota, holds title to the 1,862-foot long, 60-foot wide parcel and envisions a 390-space parking lot for

exclusive issue,” because while there are some co-locations across the state, there are far more in Los Angeles and especially in his district, which includes Mar Vista, Del Rey, Westchester and Venice. One of the most difficult co-locations in recent years occurred with Ocean Charter at Walgrove Avenue Elementary School. The charter has since moved to Westchester Enriched Science Magnet, formerly known as Westchester High School. Sandi Wise, a member of the Venice Neighborhood Council’s Education Committee, lives across the street from Walgrove and recalled people “illegally parking, double parking, illegal u-turning, blocking driveways and alleyways, littering, and loitering.” Complaints about the situation “made no difference,” he said. Jenkins said the California Charter Schools Association understands that co-locations don’t always work out well for everybody. “We know that sometimes co-locations can be challenging to manage, but we believe that this can be handled at the district level,” she said. Jenkins is also hopeful that a working group of LAUSD staffers and charter representatives created by Zimmer’s resolution will help establish best practices. Zimmer said traditional public schools will only have more issues unless Proposition 39 is revised. “We are on a collision course with Prop. 39 when it comes to facilities,” he said. “If we do not have a full revisiting of this law, we are going to have turmoil.”§

excess inventory. Group President Norris Bishton Jr. said the company would secure the land by encircling it with a 10-foot stone wall and chain-link fence gate opening to Mindanao. The company would also install lighting and monitor the area with security cameras, Bishton said. Villa Marina Council board members later took a straw vote on the proposal that indicated overwhelming support, board President Richard Reece said. “We have about 280 kitchens overlooking the Toyota property, which has been a haven for homeless people,” some of whom have interfered with quality of life in the development, Reece said. “This proposal will solve that problem, plus it will be nicer to look at,” he said. § Joe@ArgonautNews.com

•This Week• TUESDAY, OCT. 29: Zombies are not the only

A scene from last year’s “Largest Day of the Dead Exhibit on the Westside” at Edison Language Academy, which will take place in Santa Monica this year on Nov. 2.

Here Comes the BOO! Local Halloween and Dia de los Muertos events promise zombies, vampires, goblins and the three ‘C’’s: costumes, candy and chills By Michael Aushenker The hordes are coming, the zombie invasion is nigh…and we can thank Santa Claus for World War Z hitting the Westside next week. Really. Thanks to the success of the annual Christmas cheercontagion Santa Monica Pub Crawl — in which locals in Santa hats or costumes drink their way through 70 bars along five different routes — local merchants will now band together on Halloween to unleash the First Annual Zombie Crawl on downtown Santa Monica. ‘Tis the season to look creepy. Undead drinkers should arrive in zombie regalia to purchase event wristbands between 6 and 9 p.m. on Oct. 31 at Rusty’s Surf Ranch (265 Santa Monica Pier), where makeup artists will await to assist in transformations. Then the hordes are released to drink at six other bars or restaurants offering food and drink specials for walking dead: Big Dean’s (1615 Ocean Front Walk) from 7 to 10 p.m.; Ye Old King’s Head (116 Santa Monica Blvd.) from 8 to11 p.m.; Barney’s Beanery (1351 3rd St. Promenade) from 9 p.m. to midnight., Brittania Pub (318

Santa Monica Blvd.) from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.; and West 4th & Jane (1432 4th St.) from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. This ghoulish affair culminates with an official zombie afterparty from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. at Wokcano (1413 5th St.)., where a deejay will be spinning tunes and a Best Zombie Award will go to the most accomplished of resurrected corpses. Event spokesperson Kim Koury also let the cat corpse out of the coffin that a staging of the undead line dance from Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video will be attempted. The only caveat? Koury insists that all aspiring zombies abide by three simple rules: “No talking, you can only moan or growl. … You have to walk with your arms extended like a zombie. … You must drag a leg.” Tickets are $10 advance of $15 the day of the event. Visit Zombiecrawlsm.eventbrite.com.

SATURDAY, OCT. 26: Venice (the rock band) will

perform in Santa Monica (the city) during the fifth annual Halloween Rock Concert and Costume Party, benefiting Artists for the Arts (AFTA), art

programs in local schools. Founded in 1977 by brothers Michael and Mark Lennon and their cousins Kipp and Pat Lennon (younger brothers of the Lennon Sisters), Venice has brought their brand of hard rock to stages worldwide. In 2010-11, members of Venice backed Roger Waters on the Pink Floyd front man’s “The Wall Live” tour. The concert takes place from 7 to 11:30 p.m. at Santa Monica Bay Woman’s Club, 1210 4th St., Santa Monica. Tickets: are $25 to $45. Donate a canned good and receive a free beverage of slice of pie. members of the undead club to rise on the Westside next week. A certain vampire will also get his due when Santa Monica resident and best-selling author Mona Simpson (“Anywhere But Here”) sucks literary folk Jonathan Grossman, Leslie Klinger, Elizabeth Miller and David Skal into discussing one of her favorite books, “Dracula.” Published in 1897, “Dracula,” Bram Stoker’s quintessential Gothic novel, follows the young lawyer Jonathan Harker to Transylvania, where he encounters the enigmatic Count Dracula, who, as it turns out, happens to be a blood-sucking vampire. As female characters Mina and Lucy get sucked into Dracula’s vampire cult and the drama shifts from Eastern Europe to Carfax, Dracula’s English estate, vampire hunter Abraham Van Hesling closes in on his mission to drive a stake into the Count’s cold heart. Klinger, author of “The New Annotated Dracula,” said the panel’s Dracula scholars will discuss Stoker, the novel’s origins and its cinematic adaptations. A fan of the erotically charged horror novel since his teens, he believes Hollywood has simultaneously trivialized and exalted Stoker’s masterpiece. “There are great adaptations [the BBC version with Louis Jordan, the Dan Curtis and Jack Palance version) and bad,” Kingsley said. “[Francis Ford] Coppola’s [1992 movie ‘Dracula’] had a great first hour, then ran out of gas. I love Mel Brooks’ ‘Dracula: Dead and Loving It,’ which obviously says something about my tastes!”

Santa Monica resident and bestselling author Mona Simpson will lead a panel discussing one of her favorite novels, “Dracula,” at the Hammer Museum in Westwood.

“Some Favorite Writers: Dracula!” starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Hammer Museum, 10899 Wilshire Blvd., Westwood. Free, with $3 parking under the museum after 6 p.m. Costumes encouraged.

THURSDAY, OCT. 31: While not to be confused with

the pagan-rooted Halloween, the Nov. 2 Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos (“Day of the Dead”) — the morbidly festive holiday to honor departed family and friends — has in recent years grown into a compatible celebration in America, thanks in part to its proximity on the calendar. The Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC) will present its 10th annual Day of the Dead Celebration on Oct. 31 in partnership with UCLA’s Chicana/Chicano Studies Department and artist-inresidence Martha Ramirez. In true Dia de los Muertos tradition, the event will honor (Continued on page 31)

The school fundraiser includes a haunted maze, tiny terror costume parade, monster mash costume parade, Diablos Diner food court, a spooktacular bazaar, creepy petting zoon and phantom photo booth. The free event, aimed at goblins 5 and under, takes place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Couer D’Alene Elementary, 810 Couer D’Alene Ave., Venice. CDAElementary.org.

Some of Kaplan’s songs have already appeared on the soundtracks of network and cable TV programs, including “Homeland,” “House” and “Grimm.” An episode of “Graceland” recently used “Sweet Magnolia Flower,” a cut

Rising ‘Stars’ Marina del Rey’s Jonny Kaplan has found success touring overseas, and now he wants to bring it home By Michael Aushenker As captain of the roots revival act Jonny Kaplan and the Lazy Stars, singer-songwriter Jonny Kaplan has found much inspiration in predecessors The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. In an unfortunate turn in 2007, Kaplan emulated Dylan circa 1966 when the avid motorcyclist got into a horrible accident following the release of his group’s third album, “Seasons.” It took months for the 20 bones he broke to heal while the collision emotionally flung him down a dark rabbit hole. But a blessing emerging from this horrendous accident was when Lazy Stars keyboardist Rami Jaffee offered Kaplan use of his recording studio,

Fonogenic in Van Nuys, to create his band’s album “Sparkle and Shine,” released in late last month. Now, Jonny Kaplan and the Lazy Stars are back on their feet and performing Tuesday at Piano Bar in Hollywood. “Jonny’s always had a knack for finding great players and letting them fly with his songs,” Jaffee said. “That’s what sets him apart from most songwriters I’ve worked with. It really shows when the Lazy Stars play.” Jaffee should know. Organist for Dave Grohl’s Foo Fighters and a founding member of Jakob Dylan’s The Wallflowers, he rounds out a band of musicians on “Sparkle and Shine” who have amassed amazing credits. Dave Krusen is a former

drummer for Pearl Jam. Alternate keyboardist Adam MacDougall joined The Black Crowes in 2007. Violinist Jessy Greene, who also plays with Foo Fighters, has worked with Pink and singersongwriter Jeff Tweedy in his bands Wilco and Golden Fog. Bassist Brad Smith is a founding member of Blind Melon. Jaffee’s girlfriend, actress Daryl Hannah, also sings on two “Sparkle and Shine” tracks. Kaplan has worked with artists Wilco, The Wallflowers, Kings of Leon, Lucinda Williams and Keith Richards. The Philadelphia native came to Los Angeles to break into the music industry and currently lives on a sailboat in Marina del Rey. “It is an incredible way to live close to nature in one of the biggest cities in the world,” Kaplan said. “The only con for me … is no bathtub!” Kaplan, who has toured throughout the world and was performing in Buenos Aires

Being Harold Pinter Julian Sands and John Malkovich share their love of the Nobel Prize-winning writer during an event at the Broad Stage By Michael Aushenker Here is a window into the way great actors bond: They create theater devoted to their literary heroes. In the case of Englishman Julian Sands and American John Malkovich, they admired and befriended Nobel Prizewinning novelist, playwright and screenwriter Harold Pinter, who died in 2008. On Saturday, Malkovich will direct Sands in “A Celebration of Harold Pinter,” a one-off engagement of readings and remembrances at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica Best known for his plays “The Birthday Party” (1957), “The Homecoming” (1964) and “Betrayal” (1978), Pinter also wrote screenplays such as “The French Lieutenant’s Woman” (1981) and crafted poetry — of which, according to Sands, Pinter was very protective. “I’m the only person he ever worked with on his poetry,” Sands told The Argonaut. “It was not an easy thing for him to relinquish this and have another

meeting Pinter after playing in a BBC production of Pinter’s “The Lover,” led to an evolving theatrical tribute to their late literary friend. For Sands, who befriended the fellow London native Pinter a decade before Pinter died, the tribute started forming in 2005, when Pinter called Sands for help as he was about to do a reading. “He was too ill to perform it,” Sands said. “He asked me to do this charity event.” Three years after Pinter died, Sands was staging memorial events in London, New York and Hollywood. “Someone recorded it and sent it to John, who wasn’t able to be there,” said Sands, explaining how Malkovich got involved and took the show on the road. Initially slated for just 10 shows in New York last year, “A Celebration of Harold Pinter” ended up running for 50 performances. “The response was amazing,” Sands said. Sands described prior

You somehow could not be unconscious of his presence." —Julian Sands on Harold Pinter person [reading] it in his stead.” Sands’ film resume includes “A Room with a View,” “Boxing Helena,” “Leaving Las Vegas,” and David Fincher’s Hollywood remake of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” Malkovich, who has acted in films by Woody Allen, Terry Zwigoff and The Coen Brothers, was most famously the subject of Spike Jonze’s indie hit, the Charlie Kaufman-scripted meta-comedy “Being John Malkovich.” But there is creative room at the Broad for both. “John is an old friend of 30 years,” Sands said, who traces their relationship back to working together on the Academy Award-winning 1984 movie “The Killing Fields,” a career-maker for both men. “One of our early pleasures was to read Pinter scenes together.” That shared love for Pinter’s work, coupled with Malkovich

occasions as “odd gigs and odd places”: Budapest, Mexico City, Chicago … wherever Malkovich and Sands found themselves. That eventually led to the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, which would prove fortuitous for Los Angeles. While gearing up for Scotland, Sands met Broad Stage Director Dale Franzen at The Getty, he said, eventually putting this week’s engagement in motion. After this weekend’s performance, “I can imagine a gig in San Juan, Puerto Rico,” Sands said, alluding to where he’ll be in November — filming Malkovich’s NBC series “Crossbones,” which will air next year. Malkovich will star in the drama as the pirate Blackbeard, and Sands has a recurring role as the governor of Jamaica. Also in November, Sands will walk the runway at a fashion show introducing Malkovich’s new

Technobohemian menswear line. Sands said working with Malkovich on the Pinter project has “been the most valuable experience — having a director, a guide, a friend with whom I have an extraordinary [rapport]. John has a very good ear for Pinter.” Sands recounted a Malkovich analogy for their fluid collaboration interpreting Pinter’s work: “[Malkovich is] the lifeguard and I’m the surfer, and the material is the surf board, the audience being the waves. All [Malkovich] has to do is sit and watch. It’s like a conversation between friends.” As for Sands’ relationship with Pinter, “I was instantly smitten by the power of his words,” Sands said. “Whenever I met him, I was always very intimidated. He was such a star. I

became his teacher’s pet.” The actor said he came to know two sides of the writer’s personality. “There was the bird of prey. You somehow could not be unconscious of his presence. One was always slightly on his guard. He had this extraordinary keen intelligence and a sense of what he thought about anything,” said Sands. “Harold had very particular views. Of all the people I have ever known, he had the most focus about what he talked about. The subject absorbed him completely,” said Sands. “There was nothing vague about the conversation you might have. He was absolutely always on. He had a raptor-like gaze and could penetrate anything superficial.” The other side of Pinter surfaced in his writing: “The

extraordinary humanity he had and the capacity for romantic love and humor — a side of him which, like any actor, was capable of being the sweetest and most entertaining.” Come Saturday night, Sands will not be impersonating Pinter. Anybody expecting to see something akin to Val Kilmer donning a white wig and mustache to transform into Mark Twain will be disappointed. “I don’t inhabit him so much as he inhabits me,” the actor said. “It’s me as Julian Sands sharing my experiences, and the fruits of the work of Harold and I work together.” “A Celebration of Harold Pinter” is at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Broad Stage, 1310 11th St., Santa Monica. Venice Duck Brewery founders John Binder and Christian Warren share a toast on Sunday at James' Beach

Beers of a Feather

The beach’s own Venice Duck Brewery waddles into a busy beer scene By Jake Armstrong In a city with no shortage of potential mascots, longtime Venice bartenders John Binder and Christian Warren sure had their work cut out for them. Friends for two decades and beer lovers for even longer, the pair wanted to not only craft a beer that captured the often intense diversity of Venice, but also settle on an icon that would do just as much. They skipped over Rollerblading troubadours, sword swallowers and drum circles and settled on one rare breed that’s lived through Venice in all of its forms: the canal ducks, perhaps one of the beach’s earliest inhabitants. Binder and Warren, who over the years have tended bar together at Hal’s Bar & Grill and James’ Beach, named their enterprise Venice Duck Brewery with hopes of injecting a little taste of Venice into the burgeoning craft beer movement that has taken hold nationwide. “We just wanted to create something that really represents Venice,” said Binder, president of the new Venice Duck Brewery, which rolled out its first keg this week. The brewery’s first release is Dogtown Duck, a piney and pungent West Coast IPA with a hearty backbone of Citra, Simcoe

and Zythos hops. It hit the taps at James’ Beach on Sunday and the crowd drained the first keg in less than two hours. Next up is Venice Duck Agave Blonde, which will rely on the sweet syrup for character instead of the more traditional honey – a decidedly Westside choice of ingredients, Warren said. Stoner Duck, a Hemp seed brown ale, Lone Duck, a Belgian abbey ale, and Lucky Duck, an American wheat beer, are soon to follow. Warren and Binder plan to have a tasting room open in Venice in about a year, available real estate providing. The brewery gets its name from a strange but possibly true story. After a party at the canals years ago, one of Binder and Warren’s friends fell asleep on the sidewalk. When he awoke, he found himself covered in ducks sharing his warmth to beat the morning chill. The image stuck and Binder and Warren decided on using a Venice duck – with shades, sleeve tattoos and a wallet chain, of course – as the icon of their brand of brews. Warren, owner of Melody Bar & Grill in Westchester, and Binder, who’s tended bar at James’ Beach for the past 17 years, say their love of craft beer helped them bond as co-workers and has been with them most of their lives, sometimes through

necessity. “My friends wouldn’t let me in the house if you could see through the beer,” joked Warren, CEO of the brewing company. Venice, like the rest of the country, is in the middle of a craft beer boom. The Venice Beach Beer Company opened in 2012 and Firestone Walker Brewing, one of the state’s largest craft beer producers, is looking to open an office and restaurant and possibly a brewery in the Venice area. Craft beer in the United States is in the middle of an unprecedented surge in popularity. Craft beer production increased 15 percent by volume and 17 percent in retail sales dollars in 2012, according to the Brewers Association, a nonprofit trade association representing the majority of American breweries. “More breweries are currently operating in the US than at any time since the 1870s,” said Paul Gatza, director of the Brewers Association, in a 2013 midyear report on the state of craft brewing. “With each new brewery opening, American craft brewers are reinforcing the US’s position as the world’s most diverse brewing nation. It’s a very good time to be an American beer lover.”§

Vardo Café

235 Main St., Venice (310) 664-9696 vardocafe.com My brother and I like to invite chance into our lives, particularly when it comes to dining. If we’re heading for a restaurant and see a place that looks interesting along the way, it’s irresistible to stop and investigate. This is frustrating for companions who expect that when you start with a destination you should actually arrive there, but the habit is well established and we’re not likely to change. We were on our way to a gastropub in Venice last week, and after we parked on Main Street we saw a sign that simply read “Vardo Café.” A glance inside revealed an interesting interior — a small room lined with antique mirrors, softly lit by hanging lamps. The menu looked intriguing, but what sold us on dining there was the smell of the place. Even from the front door there was a scent of exotic spices, and we were hooked. The menu was small but unusual, about equally divided between Middle Eastern and Indian specialties, pizzas and Mexican items. All were vegetarian and could be made vegan, which concerned my brother, who muttered, “I’ve never had a really good meal at a place with this kind of attitude.” Our server arrived after a few moments and explained the concept and décor — a vardo is a gypsy wagon, and the owner had based the selection on his own Persian heritage as well as places he had traveled.

We started with glasses of wine from their short but wellchosen list; except for the house wine, everything was $9 per glass or $32 for the bottle. We started with a Chilean Sauvignon Blanc and Silver Ridge Sonoma Chard, and tested both against the first item to arrive, a vegetable soup with coconut milk and lemongrass. At the first taste my brother’s eyebrows rose and he said, “I withdraw my previous statement. I could

of mushrooms. The Sauvignon Blanc was slightly better at complementing the heat, but both wines worked well. Next to arrive was a pair of Indian curries over brown rice: spinach sagwala and vegetable korma. These are usually served in full portions as an entrée, but the option of multiple small portions at almost the same price is offered, and we wanted to try as many things as possible. I preferred the spinach, which

"Even from the front door there was a scent of exotic spices, and we were hooked." make a meal of this.” I agreed. It was fragrant with ginger and Thai spices — hot enough to be interesting, but delicate enough that we could taste the difference between the two kinds Photo By Richard Foss

was more lightly cooked than is typical at Indian restaurants — it still had some natural flavor and texture. The korma, made with cashew cream sauce, also hit the mark. It had the same artfully calibrated heat as the soup, and the peppery flavors were a welcome undertone that never dominated the dish. We had told our server to bring out items as they were ready, and the next two arrived simultaneously. We had ordered a “duende” pizza, which had toppings of hummus, falafel, cucumber, tomato, bell pepper, onions and feta. This was a taste of the Eastern Mediterranean on a crust, and it was delicious despite having a bit more bell pepper than I usually like. They serve conventional pizzas too, and I might even order one sometime, but this is the one I’d use to show off the place for friends.

The Yiddish are coming! The Yiddish are coming! A new monthly series of films rooted in Eastern European Jewish culture unspools in Del Rey.

Molly Picon stars in “East Meets West,” the 1923 feature film kicking off the Sholem Community’s monthly Yiddish cinema series through February.

By Michael Aushenker A European Jewish language mixing German, Hebrew and other vocabulary, Yiddish usage may be fading with time, but local institutions are plying away at keeping its vibrant literary and artistic traditions alive. Enter Hershl Hartman, education director of the Playa Vista-based Sholem Community and a member of Southern California Arbiter

Ring/Workman’s Circle, who has organized a monthly Sunday morning film program illuminating the diversity of Yiddish cinema of the 1920s through ‘40s. The series begins Sunday with a screening of 1923’s “East and West” at Westside Neighborhood School in Del Rey. On the surface, “East and West” deals with a cultural clash between the traditional Eastern European

shtetl (village) and modern American life in the Jazz Age. “This is a comedy with a serious undertone [about assimilation],” Hartman said. The film depicts actress Molly Picon — “the reigning star of the Yiddish theater for 30 years,” said Hartman — as “a young woman who follows only her own direction. She teaches young Yeshiva boys to do the Charleston. Risible things like that.” The five films in the series, each a restored print with English subtitles, were produced in Austria, Poland and the United States. They are among thousands of Yiddish films produced prior to World War II aimed at entertaining Yiddish-speaking audiences, many of them adapted from the rich wellspring of Yiddish literature and featuring talent who would later star in and influence Hollywood movies and television. Later screenings include the 1939 movie “Tevye” — based on Sholem Aleichem’s story “Tevye and his Daughters,” which would later inform the 1964 musical and 1971 film “Fiddler on the Roof.” In this version, actor and director “Maurice Schwartz first showed him as a mensch. It’s not a musical but a drama,” Hartman said. Another is the “Light Ahead,” based on a novel by the

L.A. Aqueduct Centennial 2013

Join LADWP in celebrating 100 years of continuous service of William Mulholland’s engineering marvel, the Los Angeles Aqueduct. The Aqueduct first conveyed pristine snowmelt from the Eastern Sierra to Los Angeles on November 5, 1913, which led to the growth and prosperity of Los Angeles and Southern California, helped spur an economy that today rivals many nations’ and supports a distinct culture synonymous with invention, creativity and entrepreneurship. Today, the Aqueduct continues to provide fresh drinking water to Los Angeles and will continue to do so as we enter our Next Century of Water together. Requiem for the Man in Black Kris Kristofferson remembers fellow Highwayman Johnny Cash with critic Robert Hilburn on Tuesday in Santa Monica By Michael Aushenker Writers Bloc has long been a forum for interesting conversations, but Tuesday promises something really special when music writer Robert Hilburn interviews singer-songwriter Kris Kristofferson about his late friend, the iconic Johnny Cash, at the New Roads School in

Santa Monica. A Rhodes Scholar, Kristofferson is the perfect person to wax nostalgic on Cash: He not only wrote songs for The Man in Black, but, with Cash, comprised half of 1980s country supergroup The Highwaymen. Hilburn, who was a Los Angeles Times music critic for three decades, recently penned

“Johnny Cash: The Life,” a biography detailing the triumphs and travails of the music icon who, as the song goes, “played everywhere, man!” — from the Hollywood Bowl and Las Vegas to Folsom and San Quentin prisons. Cash is best remembered as a founding father of country, but his musical roots sprang from gospel, folk and the early rock ‘n’ roll he immersed himself in at the start of his career touring with Jerry Lee Lewis and a green Elvis Presley. Though the conversation will focus on Cash, who died in September 2003, Kristofferson is a legend in his own right.

statements on everything from love and aging to U.S. foreignpolicy follies. And, if Tuesday’s Writers Bloc audience is lucky, perhaps Kristofferson will share an anecdote or two from the 1970s about acting for wildman “Bloody” Sam Peckinpah in the classic “Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid” and “Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia.” The Writers Bloc meets at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Ann and Jerry Moss Theater at New Roads School, 3131 W. Olympic Blvd., Santa Monica. $25. Free parking. writersblocpresents. com§ Michael@ArgonautNews.com

THE SABAN THEATRE

Jumping on the MERLE gypsy wagon... HAGGARD The Malpass Brothers The tacos were less successful due to the generous instincts of the kitchen — the soft tortillas were stacked so high with beans, lettuce, soy chorizo, cabbage and salsa that they were impossible to eat without sending cascades of fillings onto the table. The mounds of lettuce topped with salsa made an impressive presentation, but with half the greens it would have been a better entrée. We paired these items with red wines, a delicious LaForge Syrah and a Spanish Rioja. The red list here is short on tannic, oaky wines that need to be paired with rich, meaty dishes, which is entirely sensible given the vegetarian menu. I know restaurants where this kind of calibration is never considered, so I appreciate when it is. For dessert we had a square of baklava, which was the only dud of the evening. The small pastry was gummy rather than crisp and drenched with honey. Cucumber ice cream was on offer, and in retrospect we wish we had tried that. Our dinner for two was $105 with four glasses of wine — not the price of an everyday meal, but this wasn’t one, and we had over-ordered. As we left we noted the theme of the restaurant fit the way we found it — wandering hopefully like the Romany in their wagons and grateful for the interesting places we found along the way. § Vardo is open from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 3:30 to 11:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturday, and 3:30 to 10 p.m. Sundays. Street parking available. §

The actor and singer, who in recent years moonlighted as an actor Marvel’s “Blade” trilogy and “Dolphin Tale,” has written and recorded a slew of classic songs. Kristofferson’s “Me and Bobby McGee” turned into one of Janis Joplin’s biggest hits, his “Help Me Make it Through the Night” was covered by Presley, and, “Sunday Morning Coming Down,” a melancholy paean to alcoholism, became one of Cash’s signature songs. On recent albums such as “This Old Road” and followups “Closer to the Bone” and “Feeling Mortal,” Kristofferson teamed up with producer Don Was to deliver eloquently crafted

An informal club meets monthly in Santa Monica to dine at Izzy’s and screen Cuban-themed cinema at a private residence. By Michael Aushenker For the past five years, it’s been a monthly tradition: Meet at Izzy’s Deli, the venerable home of Judith’s Mish Mash, on Wilshire and 15th, then repair to the Santa Monica home of Rachel Sene and Jay Johnson for a Cuban-connected narrative film or documentary. This month will be no different. On Saturday, the club Films4Cuban5 presents “AfroCuban Legends,” a documentary glimpse at the golden age of Havana in which bandleader Juan de Marcos Gonzalez leads an all-star procession of some of Cuba’s greatest musicians, including Ibrahim Ferrer, Pio Leyva and Ruben Gonzalez, in performances at Havana’s Salon of Dreams. Films4Cuban5 began as part of the Greater Los Angeles Coalition in Solidarity with Cuba. The kaffeeklatsch group attracts about 35 people per screening and touches on both the cultural and political aspects of Cuba. Most of the attendees are not of Cuban heritage but have an interest in experiencing a taste of Cuban culture. The monthly gathering is “a mixture of progressive people,” Sene said. “We discuss the film and relax with coffee. It’s a social with a Cuban theme.” But for Sene, a CubanAmerican who has family in Cuba, the club’s mission is

The Cuban 5 were arrested in 1998 in Miami and convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage and other crimes, convictions that were struck down by an appeals court but later reinstated. A suggested $5 donation for the evening covers Cuban-style coffee and gourmet cookies, with remaining proceeds going to the defense of The Cuban 5. Past screening by Films4Cuban5 have included a mix of narrative and documentary films, such as “Havana Station,” “Maestra,” “Habana Eva,” “Marti: The Eye

of the Canary” and one of Sene’s favorites, “Portrait of Teresa.” At “Alta Habana,” a residence on the corner of Alta and 9th Street, Sene hopes her gatherings will “educate the people about the Cuban 5 and support for the Cuban 5.” However, the purpose of the monthly meetings, Sene insisted, is not to exclusively discuss politics but to enjoy the programming. Q&A

What are some easy fixes to increase my home’s value? First, invite a real estate agent over to give you suggestions on how you might increase the value of your home. Agents will often do this as a courtesy, and many can offer great ideas for low-cost upgrades based on their day-to-day experiences. Get an inspection to make sure you won’t be blindsided by hidden problems once your home is on the market. Some small problems can cost a lot if they’re ignored for too long. So be proactive and see what items your home needs to be in top condition. Get an energy audit to see how you can improve the efficiency of your home. Many utility companies do energy audits as a free service, and figuring out how to make your home more efficient can be a great marketing tool when you decide to

sell. Applying fresh coats of paint to every room is relatively low cost, but can be time consuming, which is why many people decide to forego the project. And remember, neutral colors are best because they appeal to most everyone. Use native plants to increase your curb appeal and save money on water. Find out what grows naturally in your region, and showcase these plants in front of your home. Saving water is a great benefit to new homeowners, and planting native plants is an easy way to “go green.” Install a water filtration system in your kitchen. The cost to install these is fairly low, but is one of those small details that home buyers love. Remove your popcorn ceiling. This

sounds expensive, but scraping away the popcorn texture from your 1970s ceiling is actually a fairly inexpensive DIY project. Just visit your hardware store for advice, then start scraping. Rent a storage unit. One way to open up the space in your home is to rent a unit and put half your furniture in it for safe-keeping. The relative emptiness of the home is appealing to buyers because it gives the impression of more space. Small upgrades in the bathroom and kitchen can improve the buyer’s first impression. Change out the knobs on the cabinets. Install updated lighting fixtures. Put in a new faucet. Replace work carpets or rugs. Area rugs are fairly cheap to upgrade. Replacing carpet with wood floors, or discover-

ing the wood floor underneath, is ideal, but may not be cost-effective for you. Do what you can to improve flooring. At minimum, consider getting the carpets professionally cleaned. Upgrade appliances. If you’re able to upgrade any of your appliances, it will increase the value of your home. Look for Energy Star-rated appliances so you can show potential buyers another way this home will save them money in the long run. This week’s question was answered by Brian Christie and Deborah Seidel, The Agents in Action! team, The Real Estate Consultants, (310) 910-0120.

grandfather of modern Hebrew and Yiddish literature, Mendele Mocher Sforim. The 1939 film starred David Opatoshu, who later appeared on many American TV programs (“The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” “Star Trek,” “Mission: Impossible,” “Falcon Crest”), and was written by Chaver Pahver, a Yiddish screenwriter who lived in Los Angeles. “The Matchmaker” (1940) is representative of Yiddish comedies that influenced JewishAmerican comedians such as The Marx Brothers, The Three Stooges and Mel Brooks. Closing out the proceedings in February is 1937’s “The Dybbuk,” a Polish film version of a supernatural love story in a 1914 play by S. Ansky. The film could be superficially described as a Yiddish “Romeo and Juliet,” but “the Dybbuk, invades the body of a young woman, which leads to an exorcism … [and] woven into the supernatural story is a stark contrast of the rich and poor,” Hartman said. “If there’s an overarching theme [of this film series], it’s that Yiddish culture is as broad as any other group, from stark drama to vaudeville humor. It can’t be

easily pigeonholed,” Hartman said. “And besides that,” he added, “it’ll be a lot of fun.” “East and West” screens at 10:15 a.m. Sunday at Westside Neighborhood School, 5401 Beethoven St., Del Rey. The series continues through February, with each screening $15 or $50 for a series pass. Visit sholem.org for more information. § Michael@ArgonautNews.com

of $99 to $250), the night was a non-stop barrage of heavy-hitting laughs that appeared to send people home happy, from beatboxing comic Reggie Watts and Maya Rudolph’s Prince tribute band Princess to an ultra-rare 20-minute standup performance by Adam Sandler and an epic closing set by Tenacious D

with surprise special guests The Lonely Island. Eric Idle was an early highlight, leading a packed ancillary tent crowd in sing-alongs of Monty Python classics including “Sit on My Face” and “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.” Later in the same tent, reunited

But many of the standup sets there and on other stages were awfully short to justify the placement of names like actor Zach Galifianakis — who did just 12 minutes of jokes — as major promotional draws. On the main Omega Stage, former “Saturday Night Live” star Fred Armisen did a rollicking set of faux-punk

songs in character as a clueless 1970s British Punk rocker, based on a skit he performed on “SNL” following the death of former British Prime minister Margaret Thatcher. The set included a ludicrous love song devoted to Thatcher that first appeared on “SNL.” But the night really exploded into high gear on the Omega Stage with a set by the Gregory Brothers, who have become KROQ-FM favorites for their autotuned songs based on YouTube videos torn from the headlines. Triumph the Insult Comic Dog lived up to his name with devastating takedowns on Galifianakis —“You know what else follows Zach? A swarm of flies! I keed,” the puppet said — and headliner/ organizers Tenacious D —“Have you seen these guys? The D stands for diabetes!” —before a surprise appearance by late-night television hot Conan O’Brien and a closing song in which Triumph joined Black, Watts and others. Sandler’s set included four of his well-known comic songs such and a spoof of “Twelve Days of Christmas” that involved a string of disgusting items he claimed to have earned while trick-or-treating at celebrities’ homes. Tenacious D closed the night out with a set that featured a giant alien squid battling a giant demonic robot before the two creatures danced along to Tenacious D’s mash-up with The Lonely Island, whose members included “SNL” digital short mastermind Andy Samberg. Writer Carl Kozlowski won the Laugh Factory’s America’s Funniest Reporter contest in 2006.§
