A gem in need of some polish
The Marina del Rey Vision Statement is a roadmap for long-overdue reinvestment By L.A. County Supervisor Don Knabe I have always considered Marina del Rey to be the crown jewel of Los Angeles County. Unfortunately, this gem has long been ignored. No spit, no polish. No investment in this treasured area. Until now. At last, we have a plan. The L.A. County Board of Supervisors recently approved a Vision Statement for Marina del Rey. Rather than piecemeal updates, we have the opportunity to create something special for this truly unique place. While adjacent areas have been updated with new restaurants, businesses and attractions, nothing has been done in the marina for decades. We’ve missed boom economic cycles that could have provided much-needed investment and updates to Marina del Rey. Finally, we are moving forward. I want to thank all the residents, business owners, boaters and visitors who took the time to share your vision. Over the past couple years, we’ve held more than 40 public meetings to capture your feedback, your concerns and your ideas about what you wanted Marina del Rey to become. You sent emails, participated in our online forums, called us. We’ve met face-to-face with hundreds of you in small group meetings. Let me be clear: We heard you.
Change can be upsetting, but we’ve neglected Marina del Rey for far too long. With the growth of surrounding areas, most notably the rise of creative-tech hub Silicon Beach, we can no longer stick our heads in the sand and avoid the necessary changes we must make. All of this has led to a vision to transform the marina over the next 15 to 20 years. So, what can you expect to see? The Vision Statement recommends “activity districts” to bring together similar uses, such as recreational and residential, to improve sense of place. We want to improve mobility, so residents and visitors can see an improvement in the traffic problems that have festered over the years. Or even better, let’s avoid cars altogether and make it easier to cycle and walk, or use other forms of transit specifically designated for the marina, such as the WaterBus.

Guest Opinion
Don Knabe says the marina needs a facelift
We want to enhance the area’s amenities and improve access to recreational opportunities. This includes the installation of dinghy docks, transient slips, wash areas, improved security and storage facilities, and a boat house. We’ll add new attractive signage. We’ll consolidate parking so that people can park their cars once and enjoy all that the marina offers. And of course we can’t forget the town’s most dominant feature, the marina itself. Many people don’t know that this beautiful destination is one of the world’s largest man-made small craft harbors, with 19 marinas and a close-knit boating community of residents priding themselves on a life lived at sea. Yet, we’ve failed to invest in this spectacular place for decades. I certainly recognize there are some who wish for the marina to remain untouched — and sometimes those voices are very loud. But the majority of people I speak to want updates and improvements. Of course, change can be upsetting, but we’ve neglected Marina del Rey for far too long. With the growth of surrounding areas, most notably the rise of creative-tech hub Silicon Beach, we can no longer stick our heads in the sand and avoid the necessary changes we must make. So I hope we can rally together and embrace this new vision for the Marina. I’m excited about the investment, about the next phase and most importantly the vibrancy we will restore to this fabulous destination. Together, these changes, this investment, this vision for the future will reestablish Marina del Rey to its rightful position as the crown jewel of Los Angeles County — a place all residents, tourists and visitors can enjoy for years to come. Los Angeles County Fourth District Supervisor Don Knabe has represented Marina del Rey on the board since 1997.

NEWS in Brief Coyote sightings prompt concern
Recent coyote sightings in and around residential parts of Playa del Rey, the Westchester bluffs and Playa Vista — including a coyote giving chase to and biting a pet dog in August — have some residents on edge. During a community meeting on Tuesday, a Los Angeles Department of Animal Services officer will address coyote sightings in the area and discuss human-wildlife interaction in urban environments and what to do if you encounter a coyote. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the Playa Vista Library, 6400 Playa Vista Drive. The event is organized by the nonprofit environmental group Friends of the Ballona Wetlands. Playa del Rey homeowner Cindy Curphey’s dog, a Cairn terrier named Tessa, was attacked by a coyote on Aug. 14 during an early morning walk along Hulbert Avenue near 80th Street. Curphey said the coyote chased her and the 11-pound dog all the way home and that Tessa was treated for a puncture wound and received several stitches. For more information, call Los Angeles Animal Services at (323) 225-9453.

By Gary Walker Roughly one year after TSA agent Genaro Hernandez was killed during the Nov. 1, 2013, shooting spree that shut down Los Angeles International Airport for hours, the head of the airport police union says LAX is no better prepared to handle a similar attack. Flanked by current and former state lawmakers, Los Angeles Airport Peace Officers Association President Marshall McClain said during an Oct. 30 press conference outside the Tom Bradley International Terminal that the shrinking ranks of the airport police — from 514 in 2010 to 497 this year — has made keeping workers and passengers safe even more of a challenge. “You should see police officers at some point when you come into the airport. I can tell you if you traveled through the airport five years ago you would have seen a more robust [airport police] presence than we have today,” McClain said. Following the union press conference, Los Angeles International Airport Police Chief Patrick Gannon held his own press briefing and released a report detailing safety improvements that have been implemented since March. The document highlights an upgraded public mass notification system plus new plans for deployment of officers and disaster response teams. “What happened a year ago could happen, and has happened, anywhere in the United States. While I can’t guarantee that a shooting will never occur again at LAX, we will do everything we can to improve our preparedness for an emergency, our response, and our recovery efforts,” said Gannon, who is also deputy director of Homeland Security and law enforcement for Los Angeles World Airports, the agency that oversees LAX. The airport police actively work with the interagency Joint Regional Intelligence Center and the Joint Terrorism Task Force, said Gannon. “This multi-agency regional approach to interceding in terrorist acts gives us our best option at identifying an attack before it occurs,” he said. In the end, the union’s gripes have everything to do with funding and resources — in particular, less of it going to the airport police and more of it
going to the Los Angeles Police Department, which also responds to emergencies at LAX. McClain said 911 calls from the airport are dispatched to LAPD, not to the LAX police. “We saw when LAPD had their numbers raised to 10,000, the airport was increasing its passenger numbers and at the exact same time the airport police was at the other end of the spectrum. That doesn’t make any sense. When we raise those questions and we hear, ‘We don’t have the financial
“ It’s really not a turf war. This really is about money. This is about [the LAPD] trying to siphon money from the city coffers — nothing more.” — Los Angeles Airport Peace Officers Association President Marshall McClain resources for the airport police,’ that doesn’t make sense. Whenever we ask for more resources we get rebuffed,” McClain said. McClain also denied that his union was merely engaged in a territorial spat with LAPD. “It’s really not a turf war. This really is about money. This is about [the LAPD] trying to siphon money from the city coffers — nothing more. We can work with anyone, whether it’s LAPD, the Sheriff’s or anybody,” McClain said. “This is about what’s best for the citizens and the passengers and keeping the city safe and the airport safe.” Asked to describe relations with management at Los Angeles World Airports, McClain said they were “tenuous at best.” Assemblyman Steven Bradford (D- Gardena), one of the lawmakers who stood with McClain, wrote legislation to enhance the authority and responsibilities of LAX police officers that became
By Gary Walker City planning officials have once again sided with slower-growth advocates in Venice campaigning to stop single-family homes from being demolished to make way for multiple housing units on the same small lots. Back in August, Los Angeles Planning Director Michael LoGrande issued a directive that the Venice Coastal Zone Specific Plan — a set of zoning rules that tends to be more restrictive about growth and density, including how many homes can be built on a single lot — should supersede general city zoning regulations in Venice when the two conflict. That directive was appealed by developer Len
“ This is one of the most significant planning accomplishments that my team has made since I took office. It’s a very big deal, and it illustrates our plans to put neighborhoods first.” — L.A. City Councilman Mike Bonin Judaken, who last year unsuccessfully sought permission to build up to 15 homes on three lots across from the Abbot Kinney Library, a 25,450-square-foot project on 18,484 square feet of land. Last month, the Los Angeles City Council’s Planning and Land Use Committee dismissed Judaken’s appeal of LoGrande’s directive. The decision marked a victory for neighborhood activists concerned about density and traffic,
law earlier this year. Bradford’s Assembly Bill 128 gave LAX police the same status as municipal officers. Prior to that law, LAPD officers had to be called in to assist airport police with routine functions, as LAX officers lacked authority to seize firearms or other deadly weapons, impound cars and enforce laws related to making false bomb reports. Airport police officers undergo the same training and hiring practices as LAPD and attend the same police academy. “The [city] charter spells out very clearly that we are to be an autonomous agency. That’s what the voters voted for and that’s what they reaffirmed
capping a months-long campaign against developers purchasing lots in Venice and subdividing them into two or three lots. The Venice Coastal Zone Specific Plan does allow for lot subdivisions in some neighborhoods, but requires that at least one of the newly created residences is marketed as affordable housing. Longtime Oxford Triangle homeowner Challis Macpherson said the problem was that developers, citing the general city zoning code, were frequently subdividing lots with no regard to an affordable housing requirement. Macpherson, formerly a member of the Venice Neighborhood Council’s Land Use and Planning Committee, was also part of a committee who helped craft Venice’s specific plan in the late 1970s. “I think the city finally came around to recognizing the importance of our specific plan,” Macpherson said. Allan Abshez, an attorney representing Judaken, did not return calls. Macpherson praised Planning Department Deputy Director Alan Bell for his successful defense against the appeal. Bell said that the Venice Coastal Zone Specific Plan should have always taken precedent over city statutes when they conflicted. “We wanted to review our prior interpretation to make sure that we had it right,” he said. Councilman Mike Bonin had campaigned on the side of those backing specific plan restrictions on lot subdivisions. “This is one of the most significant planning accomplishments that my team has made since I took office. It’s a very big deal, and it illustrates our plans to put neighborhoods first,” Bonin said. Not all current or pending lot subdivision projects in Venice will be stopped by the L.A. City Council committee’s decision, however. Bell said some projects already in the city’s planning pipeline may continue to go forward and that officials have yet to figure out what the cutoff point in the planning process will be. “We won’t have a final answer for a couple of weeks,” Bell said. gary@argonautnews.com when it was on the ballot in 2005,” said McClain, referring to a defeated municipal ballot measure that sought to merge LAPD with LAX police. Bradford’s predecessor, former Assemblywoman Betsy Butler (D-Marina del Rey) also stood with McClain and had authored legislation similar to Assembly Bill 128 during her two years in the Assembly. “In the past year not much has happened [since the Hernandez shooting]. I do not think that we are here on Earth to judge or justify others’ behaviors, but rather to consciously tap into the creative energy behind all that is and to be the happiest and most abundant human beings that we can be, so that we can ultimately leave such things as bribes, bullying and blackmail far behind us as footnotes in humanity’s history. I am requesting that the terrible parking situation in our neighborhood be looked at immediately. It is not right that residents who pay for the privilege of living at the beach be so inconvenienced that they cannot get to their own homes because of the events being held at the pier and nearby parking lots. I would suggest perhaps a well-publicized shuttle from parking lots away from the beach, as used by the Hollywood Bowl for example, would help contain the traffic. Additionally, police officers guiding traffic for residents to access our homes without having to compete with or being in

True Love Story Polarizing filmmaker Henry Jaglom juggles compassion and intolerance in a new play for Santa Monica’s Edgemar Center for the Arts Story by Michael Aushenker Photos by Frank Capri
Henry Jaglom and Tanna Frederick fool around outside the Edgemar between rehearsals for “Train to Zakopané”
W
earing his signature hat and scarf like protective armor despite the warm weather, Henry Jaglom sits on the rustic Montana Avenue patio of Kreation restaurant with a biography of Elia Kazan, a glass of water and a large plate of halved lemons. “My plays are very tight; my films are very loose,” he says, nibbling on the citrus, a comfort food since childhood. If there’s anyone who can make lemonade out of lemons, it’s Jaglom — a polarizing filmmaker who is no stranger to negative criticism, industry indifference and even accusations of sexism though, unlike Hollywood, he frequently casts middle-aged actresses in starring roles. And yet something funny happened along 76-year-old Jaglom’s journey to becoming one of independent cinema’s most prolific and unique voices: He became an acclaimed playwright. Best known for such estrogen-freighted, semi-improvised indie circuit hits as “Eating,” “Déjà Vu” and “Festival in Cannes,” Jaglom debuts his latest play — “Train to Zakopané: A True Story of Hate and Love,” starring his actress wife Tanna Frederick alongside actor Mike Falkow — next Friday, Nov. 21, at Santa Monica’s Edgemar Center for the Arts.
Santa Monica residents, Jaglom and Frederick have had a lasting relationship with the venue. In 2007, the Jaglomwritten play “Always, But Not Forever” (adapted from his 1985 film of the same name) premiered at Edgemar. Two years later, Jaglom mounted another piece he wrote, “Just 45 Minutes from Broadway” (made into a film in 2012), and has since produced stagings of A.R Gurney’s “Sylvia” and N. Richard Nash’s “The Rainmaker” — both starring Frederick — in 2011 and 2013, respectively. Based on events from the life of Jaglom’s father, Simon Jaglom, as he crossed Poland in 1928, “Train to Zakopané” takes place as anti-Semitism is growing throughout Europe prior to Hitler’s rise. In the play, a successful Jewish businessman (Falkow) falls for a captivating Polish army nurse (Frederick) while train-bound for Warsaw but faces a moral dilemma during a weekend stopover in the resort town of Zakopané when the nurse, who doesn’t know he’s Jewish, turns out to be vehemently anti-Semitic. Drawn from stories recorded before his father’s death in 1992 at 96, Jaglom’s “Train to Zakopané” explores both the human condition and its playwright at their darkest. Jaglom says he wrote “Train to

Frederick shares a story not incorporated into “Train to Zakopané” of how Jaglom’s paternal uncle found his grandfather dead with a sock in his mouth. “There was an unwritten agreement where soldiers could stay at the homes of predominant families,” Frederick says. “After the grandfather had caught the soldiers trying to steal, he [protested] and they ended up tying him up in the kitchen and gagged him. I get to make stuff up on the cuff that I didn’t even know what was in me. There is a sort of high that is awesome that I didn’t get in a theater.” And yet, she loves the sweet ritual of Jaglom showing up every night for his wife’s curtain call: “I’m so honored that he does that. If she hadn’t drunk so much, she’d still be alive.” While Jaglom was born Jewish, cinema is his true religion. “Watching a movie with Henry, the lights must be off, you must not shift your feet, you must not get a drink,” his wife says with a laugh. While 1980’s “Stardust Memories” remains Jaglom’s favorite film from the equally prolific Woody Allen, he also digs Wes Anderson movies, Alexander Payne’s “Nebraska” and binge-watches “The Sopranos,” “Extras,” “Downton Abbey,” “Sex and the City,” “The West Wing.” “He is such a study of contradictions, that Henry Jaglom,” Frederick said, laughing. “He’s an interesting, creative genius. Born in London, Jaglom grew up in New York City and attended the University of Pennsylvania before studying with Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio. He guested on TV shows “Gidget” and “The Flying Nun,” but after losing the role of Benjamin Braddock in “The Graduate” to Dustin Hoffman, Jaglom switched to filmmaking. Bring the kids,‘Stay’ for the grown-up songs Singer-songwriter Lisa Loeb heads to McCabe’s for a family-friendly set aimed to please both fan bases By Michael Aushenker
Lisa Loeb looks forward to Sunday’s return engagement to McCabe’s Guitar Shop. “It’s an intimate space. You can interact with your audience. It’s great for a musician in there. People feel so good,” she said of the Santa Monica venue. And she’s got a message for her audience: Bring your parents! That’s because at this weekend’s concert, billed as a “Matinee Kids’ Show with Lisa Loeb,” the emphasis is on making kids sing and laugh. Loeb is still most widely identified for her trademark cat-eyed glasses and “Stay (I Missed You),” the breakout song included on the soundtrack for the movie “Reality Bites.” But it’s been a long time in music industry years since that 1994 hit and her subsequent gold records — “Tails” (1995) and the Grammy-nominated “Firecracker” (1997) — and so much has changed since then. Loeb said she actually prefers keeping up with today’s system of disseminating songs digitally one single at a time rather than wait two years between albums. For more than a decade, however, Loeb has also been releasing children’s albums with covers of popular tunes and original songs she’s written with various collaborators. In 2003, she recorded “Catch the Moon” and followed it up with “Camp Lisa” five years later. The material she recorded for the 2011 children’s book (illustrated by Ryan O’Rourke) and album “Lisa Loeb’s Silly Sing-Along: The Disappointing Pancake and Other Zany Songs” and 2013’s “Movin’ and Shakin’: The Air Band Song and Other Toe-Tapping Tunes” happened during the same sessions, she said. “Moon” featured “Big Rock Candy Mountain” and “Little Red Caboose” mixed in with standards “Oh Susanna,” “Fais Do Do” and “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” “Movin’ and Shakin’” puts originals “Turn It Down (The Air Band Song)” alongside “Father Abraham.” For the pop singer, there’s something refreshing and more proactive about making music for children: “They’re not songs about broken hearts,” Loeb said. Numbers such as “Father Abraham,” something from her summer camp days, prove to be “fun, action-packed” ditties, she said, where kids “put your hands up and on your body and see how fast you can go.” Loeb said she loves the physicality of performing something such as “Monster Stomp” or her own “Turn It Down (The Air Band Song),” where kids can really act out. “Not to be sexist, but they’re fun — there’s hand clapping. There’s something masculine about the song,” she said of “Monster Stomp.” Another favorite: “The Disappointing Pancake,” in the mode of the classic “On Top of Old Smokey,” about a lowly pancake that wasn’t served for breakfast but later becomes an underdog hero. “It’s always such a conglomeration of songs,” she said of her kid-friendly concerts these days. “It came to my attention to play some of my grown-up
songs for the parents [during her children’s sets.]” The San Fernando Valley resident doesn’t believe in pandering to her young audience. Loeb grew up appreciating two-tiered songs such as the New Seekers’ “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing (In Perfect Harmony)” and “Puff the Magic Dragon” — essentially folk songs that doubled as tunes accessible to kids. A generation ago, children used to find out about Loeb’s music through their parents. Now, adults find out about her music through their kids. At 46, Loeb herself had children relatively late in life with husband Roey Hershkovitz, Conan O'Brien’s music production supervisor: Daughter Lyla Rose, who
turns 5 this month, and son Emet, 2. Loeb said she was not inspired to concoct her children’s material simply because she had kids, nor does she test her songs out on her own children. “My son loves ‘September’ by Earth, Wind and Fire and right now my daughter’s really into [Queen’s] ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’” she said. “I continue to make music that’s enjoyable for parents and their kids. It’s never talking down to kids,” she said. “Kids are just like grown-ups. They like some songs and they don’t like other songs.” The Matinee Kids’ Show with Lisa Loeb starts at Sunday at McCabe’s Guitar Shop, 3101 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica. Tickets are $15, or free for kids under 2 accompanied by an adult. Call (310) 828-4497 or visit lisaloeb.com. michael@argonautnews.com

Westside theater roundup “Into the Woods” at Westchester Playhouse
Everyone’s suddenly into “Into the Woods.” Since debuting on Broadway in 1987, the Stephen Sondheim musical has been revived repeatedly, this year alone in San Francisco and Pasadena. Meanwhile, Rob Marshall’s film adaption with Emily Blunt, Johnny Depp and (Captain Kirk himself) Chris Pine arrives Christmas Day. Closer to home, Kentwood Players’ version — directed by Shawn K. Summerer with musical direction by Catherine Rahm and choreography by Alison Mattiza — promises to capture the charm of the play, in which a baker and his wife cross paths with a who’s who of famous storybook characters: Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood and Jack the Giant Slayer, just to name-drop a few. Opens at 8 p.m. Friday and continues through Dec. 20 at Westchester Playhouse, 8301 Hindry Ave., Westchester. $12.50. (310) 645-5156; kentwoodplayers.org

Written by Jerry Mayer, whose “Aspirin & Elephants” recently enjoyed a 25th anniversary revival here, “Two Across” contains the former sitcom writer’s signature banter and acerbic one-liners which, decades ago, perked up scripts on “All in the Family,” “The Bob Newhart Show” and “M*A*S*H*.” Directed by Chris DeCarlo. “King Lear” at The Broad Stage
Joseph Marcell, best known for portraying Geoffrey the butler on the hit sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” actually spent most of his career performing live theater. See him as the world-weary royal in the Shakespeare’s Globe Theater traveling production of “King Lear.” “Lear shows you that, damn it, even at his
age he is still vital. He can still get angry. He’s fighting for the way things ought to be, not the way they’ve become,” Marcell told The Argonaut’s Jenny Lower last month before the show’s opening. Continues at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday before closing at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Eli & Edythe Broad Stage, 1310 11th St., Santa Monica. $39 to $87. Westside Happenings
The Argonaut’s Richard Foss discusses ‘Dining at Shakespeare’s Table’ in Venice By Michael Aushenker Shakespeare fever has hit the Westside. London’s Globe Theater is visiting The Broad Stage, and acclaimed productions of “Henry V” and “Macbeth” recently wrapped in Venice and Santa Monica. Even alt-rocker Rivers Cuomo, whose band Weezer recorded its just-released new album in Santa Monica, has been conducting readings of the Bard, according to his Facebook page, while Rolling Stone reported that he pulled in actors from a local Shakespeare production to sing in a chorus featured on the album. On Saturday, Argonaut food columnist Richard Foss heads to the Venice – Abbot Kinney Memorial Library to lead a talk titled “Dining at Shakespeare’s Table,” which he describes as “a look at the pop culture of Shakespeare’s day, as well as a look at what the playwright, his contemporaries, and his characters ate and how they dined.”

Stephen Galloway interviews Farrelly brothers Bobby, left, and Peter
his contact information on the script. The girl, meanwhile, was in Europe with her family, so Peter called up Eddie Murphy Productions in L.A. the next day. As the de facto editor and critic of Peter’s scripts, Bobby joined on as Peter’s collaborator. When “Dust to Dust” was shopped around Hollywood, the Farrellys were forced to rename it — “Go West,” then “A Power Tool is Not a Toy” — because nobody in Hollywood would read a script called “Dumb & Dumber.” Once the movie was in production, the Farrellys reclaimed the original title. Bobby Farrelly on casting Jim Carrey: “We didn’t know much about Jim at the time. We knew he was on ‘In Living Color.’ He didn’t have any movies out, but he read the script and totally responded to it.” Peter Farrelly on the before-he-was-famous future star of 1996’s “Kingpin”: “Woody Harrelson was my roommate when I got out here. A lot of people don’t know this, but Woody loves pot. We’d show him scripts but he wasn’t into it at the time.” Peter Farrelly on producer and “Kingpin” fan David Geffen: “He told us, ‘Whatever you guys want to do next, we’re doing it.’ So we pitched ‘There’s Something About Mary,’ and he passed.” Bobby Farrelly on initial reluctance by film execs to cast Jeff Daniels in “Dumb & Dumber” and Matt Dillon in “There’s Something About Mary”: “You always have to fight for the actors you want. A lot of times, they’re not the obvious choice.” Bobby Farrelly on turning down the chance to make the 2003 prequel “Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd”: “We had no interest in making a ‘Dumb & Dumber’ movie without Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels.” Peter Farrelly on writing a strong comic screenplay: “The jokes come relatively fast if you love the characters. You can get away with murder if you love the characters.” michael@argonautnews.com

By Michael Aushenker Filmmaker brothers Bobby Farrelly Jr. and Peter Farrelly rose to fame in 1994 after chemtrailing on the back of Jim Carrey’s rising star with their first film, “Dumb & Dumber.” After firmly establishing themselves as big-screen comedy kingpins with “There’s Something About Mary,” “Me, Myself and Irene,” “Shallow Hal” and, well, “Kingpin,” the Farrelly Brothers come full circle on Friday with the release of their two-decades-later sequel, “Dumb & Dumber To.” The Farrelly brothers stopped by the Loyola Marymount School of Film & Television on Nov. 5 to share stories as part of the school’s Hollywood Masters series, conversations between top industry talent and Hollywood Reporter executive features editor Stephen Galloway that include student Q+As. Bobby and Peter Farrelly grew up the sons of a family doctor who had a dark sense of humor. “They called him ‘Doctor Dirty Mouth,’” Bobby recalled of their dad, who passed away this year. Peter, who was an accounting major in college, took his writing seriously enough to enroll in the graduate creative writing program at Columbia University, where 15 of 17 students in his class — including Ricky Moody (“The Ice Storm”) and Tama Janowitz (“Slaves of New York”) — got books published within five years of graduating. He moved to L.A. in the mid-1980s to pursue his screenwriting, while Bobby came to California to patent and sell a failed idea: the round beach towel. The Farrelly brothers may owe their career to a one-off date Peter had with a girl who lived in Alpine, New Jersey, where Eddie Murphy had just moved next door to her family home. At Peter’s urging, the girl slipped Murphy his script when she saw him leave the house. Peter was up one night watching “The David Letterman Show” when, to Peter’s surprise, Murphy told Letterman that he planned on shooting a script his neighbor had given him called “Dust to Dust.” That’s when Peter realized he had not left

The Warehouse restaurant in Marina del Rey celebrates its 45th anniversary this month, and now Comics on the Spot — the weekly comedy showcase held there every Monday night — turns five this week. Helping comic emcees L.G. Ross and Vicky Nissen celebrate: headliner Jay London. “You might recognize me, I’m the fourth guy from the left on the evolutionary chart,” cracks stand-up comic London, a Bronx-born former boxer and cab driver with a hairdo and complexion that might get him mistaken for a member of the rock group KISS. A contestant on “Last Comic Standing” in 2004, London is not the only familiar name to appear with Comics on the Spot. Others have included “Last Comic Standing” 2008 finalist and selfdescribed “Asian Sarah Silverman” Ester Ku, a cast member on MTV shows “Wild ‘N Out” and “Girl Code”; Samba Schutte, the winner of 2011’s March Comedy Madness who describes himself on the Jon Lovitz Comedy Club website as “born and raised in Africa (and survived); and Westsider Barry Weisenberg, the Jeff Jena-trained, 2006 Las Vegas Comedy Festival winner who famously posed the comedic question, “Is it normal for a condom shop to have a blowout sale?” But don’t worry: Comics on the Spot doesn’t let things get too raunchy. Ross, a pro working the comedy circuit for a decade now, promises to keep the proceedings relatively clean. “Comics on the Spot” begins at 7 p.m. Mondays with an open mic before pros take the stage at 7:45 p.m. at The Warehouse, 4499 Admiralty Way, Marina del Rey. $10.
