LETTERS Marina growth means more headaches Re: “A gem in need of some polish,” power to speak, Nov. 13 It is quite clear that L.A. County Supervisor Don Knabe and other county officials do not live in Marina del Rey. Continually building more apartments and condominiums and the approval of two new hotels have made life much more difficult for Marina del Rey residents. The employees, overnight guests and delivery

ArgonautNews.com vehicles to these two hotels will have a greater impact on our current congestion situation. In addition, Via Marina will be cut down from four lanes to two lanes for at least two years for sewer improvements. When attending the meeting of the commissioners on Nov. 12, none of the commissioners had an answer as to why this sewer improvement was not to run along the beach versus Via Marina. I have lived here in the marina for over 30 years and all of this

new construction will only create more traffic, congestion and additional quagmires in the future. Maybe the supervisors, commissioners and other officials should move to the marina in order to observe the situation which they have created. Yes, Supervisor Knabe, the marina must have some polish but please consider the residents! Jim Maurer Marina del Rey

Ecological missteps in Marina del Rey There appears to be a disconnect between the City of Los Angeles and Los Angeles County — particularly in Marina del Rey, which is actually unincorporated land and therefore owned by all of the taxpayers who live in L.A. County. The disconnect lies in the cutting down of trees. On the one hand, the City of L.A. was among 40 winners from 200 nominees to obtain a

United States Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Award in 2009 for its efforts in The Million Tree Initiative — ongoing environmental projects to which multiple cities worldwide including Los Angeles, New York, Shanghai, Denver and London, Ontario, have individually committed. A common motive shared between these participating cities is the reduction of carbon (Continued on page 10)

Annenberg suspends Ballona involvement Controversial plans to build a 46,000-square-foot environmental education center in the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve have apparently been shelved, with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife announcing late Tuesday that the Annenberg Foundation has removed itself from the wetlands restoration process. The Annenberg Foundation was prepared to spend some $50 million on the state-of-theart center, which for the past two years was assailed by some local environmental groups opposed to any construction in the wetlands and the center’s inclusion of a domestic animal care component. “After considerable thought and reflection, the Annenberg Foundation’s leadership has made a decision to suspend its continuing involvement in

the restoration planning for the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve. The Foundation informed us of this decision after a comprehensive evaluation of all the community-development projects it is involved in that resulted in a reprioritization of resources and focus,” reads the statement by state Fish and Wildlife spokeswoman Jordan Traverso. The Annenberg Foundation, which had proposed building the center east of Lincoln Boulevard near the Culver – Marina Little League baseball fields, did not return calls. The Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission and the Coastal Conservancy remain involved in restoration plans. “The other partners will continue to move the restoration project forward,” Traverso’s statement reads.

Crash kills wrong-way cyclist A 39-year-old bicyclist who was killed after colliding with a car at Speedway and South Venice Boulevard in Venice at about 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day had put herself in harm’s way by traveling against the flow of traffic, according to police. “It was an unintentional occurrence,” LAPD West Traffic Bureau officer Brian Millan

said. “There was no alcohol or any other impairment involved. The primary reason for the collision is the bicyclist was going the wrong way on a one-way street.” The vehicle in the crash was making a left turn onto South Venice Boulevard during the collision, Millan said. The driver has not been criminally charged.

Brandon Cramer, 1973 – 2014 Santa Monica activist Jerry Rubin is hosting a memorial on Sunday for Brandon Cramer, a fixture of the Third Street Promenade who died in his sleep on Nov. 24 at age 41. Cramer, who had Asperger Syndrome and battled

epilepsy, was the subject of “Raising Brandon,” a 2009 book written by his mother, motivational speaker Amalia Starr. The memorial starts at 10 a.m. outside Barney’s Beanery, 1351 Third Street Promenade, Santa Monica.

Venice sign lighting is Friday The Venice Chamber of Commerce hosts its third annual Venice Holiday Sign Lighting and block party from 6:15 to 8 p.m. Friday at Windward Circle. At precisely 8 p.m., L.A. City Councilman Mike Bonin and a surprise

celebrity guest will throw a switch to re-light the iconic Venice sign after its white bulbs have been switched to red and green. Call (310) 822-5425 or visit venicechamber.net for information.

Rotary drive benefits homeless youth The Rotary Club of Westchester’s newly formed young professionals group is hosting a donation drive on Saturday for Safe Place for Youth, a Venice-based resource center for homeless adolescents and teens. The nonprofit lost its inventory of supplies in the Oct. 25 fire at the Extra Space Storage facility in Venice, which took 365

firefighters 14 hours to extinguish and remains under investigation. The donation drive for winter clothing, sleeping bags, undergarments, hygiene products and monetary contributions happens from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Sifted: LA, 6259 W. 87th St., Westchester. LMU named in sex abuse lawsuit Student claims campus officials ignored report that teacher had abused her in high school By Gary Walker Loyola Marymount University has joined the list of Los Angeles-area colleges accused of mishandling a report of sexual assault, only this case involves allegations that a teacher molested a student long before either arrived on campus. A 25-year-old former LMU student who remains unnamed in Los Angeles Superior Court records filed a lawsuit against LMU on Nov. 20 claiming that school officials ignored her complaints in 2009 that a then-professor had molested her years earlier, instead encouraging the student to enroll in different classes. In her lawsuit the plaintiff claims that former LMU Visiting Assistant Professor Elizabeth Brewer repeatedly sexually assaulted her while the plaintiff was a student at Notre Dame Academy, an all-girls Catholic high school in West Los Angeles, and Brewer was an English teacher there. Brewer, 39, was arrested in October at her Culver City home and faces six felony sexual assault charges, including three counts of sexual penetration with a foreign object, two counts of oral copulation with a minor and one count of forcible oral copulation. Her arraignment is set for Dec. 29, said L.A. District Attorney’s office spokesman Greg Risling. Brewer became an assistant professor with LMU’s Specialized Programs in Urban Education program in the 2011-12 school year after working as an adjunct faculty member in the LMU School of Education in 2007, according to a pamphlet introducing new hires at the time. Brewer’s academic research included “the role of technology as a tool for teaching students about the dangers and consequences of cyberbullying behaviors as well as the role of teachers in this process,” according to the document. Brewer’s affiliation with LMU ended last year. The civil complaint — which targets Brewer, Notre Dame

A booking photo of Elizabeth Brewer, who was arrested in October after being accused of molesting a high school girl before Brewer became a teacher at LMU and the alleged victim enrolled at the college Academy and LMU for unspecified damages — accuses LMU of failing to report the plaintiff’s claims of prior sexual abuse to law enforcement. “LMU is required to report what they were told to the police as a mandated reporter,” said David Ring, one of the plaintiff’s attorneys. Mandated reporters are professionals required by state

Academy as a sophomore in the 2003-04 school year. Over the next three years, Brewer’s activities allegedly escalated to include sexually suggestive remarks, texting nude photographs of herself to the plaintiff’s cell phone, and finally digital penetration and oral copulation on the Notre Dame campus and at other locations until the plaintiff graduated in 2006. In 2007, while the plaintiff attended LMU and Brewer was teaching there, Brewer began paying for counseling and therapy for the plaintiff but rescinded the payments, claiming she had become ill and could not afford them, according to the lawsuit. “In summer 2009, fearing that Brewer would abuse other students and continue her sexual harassment and abuse of the plaintiff, plaintiff scheduled a meeting with the Loyola Student Affairs office, where she reported Brewer’s prior sexual abuse,” the complaint reads. “Loyola Student Affairs highranking personnel told plaintiff that they could not do anything about the abuse and then suggested that plaintiff enroll in different classes to avoid seeing Brewer on campus.” A representative of LMU’s human resources department contacted the plaintiff in the fall of 2013, saying her “name had been raised” as part of an investigation of Brewer, according to the lawsuit, but after finding out about the plaintiff’s report of abuse four years earlier allegedly said “no one ever took any action on the 2009 report.” “This is a situation where not one but two schools were blatantly negligent and carelessly turned their back on this young girl. It is unimaginable that school officials who are supposed to protect children took no action, given they were aware of the horrific situation,” Ring said. Ring said he did not expect the civil case to proceed until the criminal charges against Brewer are resolved.

We can’t comment on it because it is a personnel matter,” LMU spokesman Mason Stockstill said. According to the complaint, Brewer began “grooming” the plaintiff for sexual abuse by paying her an inordinate amount of public and private attention “with the intent of manipulating her emotions” shortly after the girl enrolled at Notre Dame

Women aren’t trending in tech Gender equality lags in the male-dominated world of Silicon Beach, TechWeek panelists say By Michael Aushenker A dearth of women working in the booming Westside digital technology sector and in the nation as a whole was the focus of one of the larger panels during TechWeek Los Angeles, a two-day summit for industry professionals that took place Nov. 20 and 21 at the Santa Monica Pier. Marina Lee, founder of the Santa Monica-based Women in Tech Network, headed a roster of speakers that included Women in Games International President Belinda Van Sickle; Karen Eng, CEO of the engineering consulting firm CSMI; Bret Lockett, a Mobli and M2 Jets partner and former NFL player; and angel investor Frank Grant. Fox LA Channel 11 reporter Susan Hirasuna moderated the 40-minute conversation. According to Lee, only 4.2% of venture capital funding for tech startups goes to female entrepreneurs.

Marina Lee (from left), Karen Eng, Bret Lockett, Susan Hirasuna, Belinda Van Sickle and Frank Grant led the TechWeek Los Angeles panel scrutinizing an industrywide gender imbalance Lee also used Google’s employee makeup as a gauge for industrywide employment of women. The tech giant, which maintains a local headquarters in Venice, has self-reported that 30% of its employees are women. Breaking those numbers down further, women account for only 17% of Google’s tech

workers but occupy 48% of its non-tech positions. Rolling with those statistics, Hirasuna queried whether America’s female workforce has been supremely taken for granted: “If we have to go all the way to England to find talent, maybe we have to acknowledge there is a problem,” she said.

“We need to bring these women in and connect them with jobs right after college. We need a ton of VCs mentoring up with a ton of startups,” said Lee, whose networking organization’s One Million Movement campaign intends to help facilitate a million women joining the industry by 2020. According to a recent column posted to techcrunch.com, industry experts have labeled the issue “a pipeline problem” of getting women to enter the industry, but research shows that many women who enter the field leave it. Harvard Business Review research concluded that women often left the field due to “the machismo that continues to permeate these work environments.” Panelists agreed that women, if given the right opportunities, can excel in tech. From Lockett’s vantage point, the businessman has not been witness to many conversations among his peers about hiring women. “There’s no real discussion at the top. They don’t see a problem. That’s a problem,” he said. “They’re making a mistake,” said Grant of tech companies either passing over or failing to pursue talented women. The panelists did acknowledge some strides forward—at least when it comes to identifying the problem. More than ever, media reports on the industry have been picking up on its gender imbalance. “I used to go back years to search for articles. Now every medium is talking about women in tech,” Lee said. Eng, who has a young daughter, said women are able to find a

LAPD investigates apparent Del Rey dognapping One of two small dogs that disappeared during a burglary remains missing Photo courtesy of Sue Downing

By Gary Walker LAPD detectives are investigating the disappearance of two dogs — one of them returned last Saturday under mysterious circumstances — during a home burglary in Del Rey. Penny, a 13-year-old Pomeranian given medication for a heart condition, and 3-year-old Spice, a five-pound black-and-white poodle mix, were reported missing after a Nov. 21 break-in on the 11900 block of Weir Street. Homeowner Sue Downing, a veterinary oncologist, said she returned home to find that someone had rifled through her belongings and left the back door of the house and a fence gate open. Though Penny and Spice were gone, Downing said she found her other dog, also a Pomeranian, safe inside and that nothing else appeared to be missing. “I’m not really sure if [Penny and Spice] were taken or they

Police believe Spice, a five-pound black-and-white poodle mix, was taken during a burglary in Del Rey walked out because the door and the gate were open, but they’re not the kind of dogs that would run off. It makes no sense to me,” said Downing, who works at a Westside animal clinic. Spice “walks oddly” due to an injured back leg and likely wouldn’t be able to travel far,

she said. Downing, who has blanketed the area with flyers offering cash rewards for the dogs’ safe return, was reunited with Penny last Saturday but not Spice. She said the man who returned Penny told her he had seen a picture of Penny on a KTLA Channel 5

news broadcast and had recalled seeing the dog with a man in Santa Monica earlier that day. “He bought Penny from the man in Santa Monica and contacted me,” Downing said. Downing said the Good Samaritan told her he had no idea how Penny had arrived in Santa Monica or how the man had obtained her. “She’s a little tired but she seems fine,” Downing said about Penny. Police are currently seeking leads to the whereabouts of Spice, said LAPD Pacific Division Det. Robin Salazar, a burglary investigation supervisor. “We’re working on getting video [of the burglary]. It looks right now like the dogs were taken as part of the burglary,” Salazar said. “We’re still investigating and working on developing leads.” Getting Penny back has lifted Downing’s spirits and those of

friends helping in the search for Spice. “We haven’t had any leads about where Spice might be, but we’ve all been rejuvenated since Penny’s been back. This gives me hope that Spice will come home too,” she said. Salazar said dognapping was not a common occurrence in communities that the LAPD’s Pacific Division serves, which include Del Rey, Mar Vista, Westchester and Venice. Savvy, a 10-year-old Sheltie that was taken from a Culver City home during a Nov. 7 burglary, was returned the next day by a person who bought the dog prior to seeing a news report about its disappearance, according a report by KCAL 9. Downing asks that anyone with information about Spice call (310) 766-0491. Police are asking those with information about the burglary to call detectives at (310) 482-6313. gary@argonautnews.com

The Guerilla Gardener

Natalie ‘Sunshine’ Flores is building a green-thumb army to convert vacant lots into urban farms Story by Joe Piasecki Seeds of a movement are growing in a fenced-off empty lot on the unflashy south end of Abbot Kinney Boulevard. Natalie Flores, 27, passed by the space a few doors down from Washington Boulevard — then a trash-strewn mess of dry grass and a handful of dying trees — during a meditative barefoot morning walk in February. “I’m looking at all these empty plots, passing them one by one. Eventually I started exploring and noticed the fence in back of this one was open. I just started pulling weeds, thinking ‘here goes my insecurity, here goes my doubt,’” recalls Flores, who was working at Groundwork Coffee Co. on Rose Avenue at the time. “A neighbor came by and asked if I was building a garden. I said ‘sure’ and he brought me some tools.” Flores and friend Sarah Klein, 35, began to enlist the help of others through a series of weekend gardening parties that, over the past 10 months, have given rise to vegetable plots, avocado and banana trees, a patch of succulents and an herb garden of basil, oregano, rosemary, sage and

thyme. The wooden skeletons of two abandoned couches have been repurposed as planters for an upcoming crop of “couch” potatoes. The gardeners don’t have permission to be there. They didn’t ask. “The space was open and we just kind of took it over,” says Flores. ***** Flores and Klein have extended their efforts to spaces in Mar Vista and Santa Monica, though in those cases by invitation, under the name Sunshine Partnerships. “The main idea is to take over empty lots and bring neighbors together to help them realize they can grow their own food,” says Klein, who works with special-needs kids. In keeping with that initial rebel spirit, Flores and friend Pete Maziak, a 38-yearold groundskeeper and web designer from Culver City, say they frequently “seed bomb” other Westside vacant lots, with Flores often leaving a spray-painted bee stencil as a marker of reclaiming space for nature.

Working with Flores at the Abbot Kinney garden last Sunday were Maziak, professional gardener George Liebel, 34, and painter Charlotte Vanhaecke, a 29-yearold French transplant who’s lived in Mar Vista for the past four years. Vanhaecke met Flores through Transition Mar Vista, a grassroots community-building group that spearheads a Good Karma Gardens Project — a pay-it-forward network of neighbors who help neighbors tear out their lawns to install vegetable gardens. garden manager Christy Wihlelmi says. “We’re big, but there’s a huge waiting list of people who really want to garden but are living in apartments,” says Wilhelmi, author of the book Gardening for Geeks. She lives in Mar Vista, blogs at gardenerd.com and designs edible gardens for a living. Community garden space only got tighter in January with the closure of the Venice Community Garden, a vacant lot on Mildred Avenue that had contained 50 plots, to make way for development after sale of the land. In only 1,200 square feet of space, a community garden at Holy Nativity Church on 83rd Street and Dunbarton Avenue in Westchester yields hundreds of pounds of fresh produce for the LAX food pantry each year, says founder Joanne Poyourow. “That’s a lot of vegetables for a skinny ribbon of land nobody had thought much of,” says Poyourow of the environmental and social justice project that also spun off into the Emerson Avenue Community Garden at Orville Wright Middle School. “A lot of the silver-haired generation think of environmentalism as just a concept, but it’s a changing world. Larry John McNally harmonizes with singers Nichelle Monroe and Lucy Schwartz during a recent Cinema Bar performance

Music Matters Larry John McNally returns to Cinema Bar after traveling a long and winding road By Bliss Bowen Regulars at the Cinema are familiar with its eclectic musical offerings, but passersby who casually wander into the hole-in-the-wall bar rarely expect the kind of viscerally satisfying grooves, elegant melodies and intelligent, atmospheric lyrics that fill the room when Larry John McNally performs. Eschewing flash for understated soul, McNally and his accompanists — bassist David Schwartz (composer for TV’s “Arrested Development,” “Deadwood” and “Northern Exposure”), drummer Michael Jerome (Better Than Ezra, Richard Thompson) and background singer Nichelle Monroe (Common, Talib Kweli, Bobby Womack) — aren’t your typical bar band. McNally’s name may ring bells for fans who geek out on album credits; his songs have been recorded by Joe Cocker, the Eagles, Don Henley, Chaka Khan, Aaron Neville, Michael Ruff, Mavis Staples, Rod Stewart and Bonnie Raitt, who included McNally’s “Nobody’s Girl” on her Grammywinning 1989 album “Nick of Time.” When McNally sat down to write that, all he had was the title. The song it unearthed

became a lifeline during a critical transition, and a relatable anthem for countless women. “That line ‘She don’t need anybody to tell her she’s pretty/ She’s heard it every single day of her life’ — there’s some built-in contradiction in that subject

love of New Orleans music to Louisiana, where he soaked up funky sounds and ambiance in NOLA and Baton Rouge. “The earthiness of Muscle Shoals and Memphis and New Orleans R&B really got to me,” he says. “I tried to combine that with a certain level of poetry.” He relocated to Los Angeles after Chaka Khan recorded “Sleep on It”; doors of opportunity swung open, bringing publishing deals and solo records for Atlantic and Columbia. But by the mid’80s, he’d hit an existential crossroads. “I remember seeing a guy by the side of the road with a shovel,” he explains. “I said, ‘That’s what I need to do. I’m not gonna write any more music to try to please anybody and beg for advances.’ So I started doing construction. I — Larry John McNally liked it. I got up real early in matter that still seems to resonate,” he the morning; that’s when I wrote ‘Nomuses. “People want to be recognized, but body’s Girl.’ The people were nicer. Inspired by Allen During that time he befriended Raitt; Toussaint, the Maine native followed his after she recorded “Nobody’s Girl,”

“I get Spotify statements that are 15 pages of plays, different songs, but after 15 pages it’s like 15 cents. If Bonnie [Raitt] did another song of mine it would be welcome whether it sold or didn’t sell, but the amount of money it would make wouldn’t be enough to pay your phone bill for a year.”

money began rolling in, and McNally became his own publisher. He realized he could finally travel “to other music places like Nashville and London. Then I moved to New York around ’91 and started making independent albums the way that I wanted.” Long since returned to LA (after 10 years in NYC) and a transformed industry, he interacts with US and European fans online and tracks which songs they listen to most through streaming services. But because songwriter royalty rates do not yet equitably reflect changes wrought by those technologies, the mailbox money (i.e., royalty checks) that’s enabled artists like McNally to build self-sustaining careers has dwindled. He doesn’t cast blame and doesn’t expect past practices to return, but he — like small business owners nationwide — worries about the future. And keeps writing: “The artist’s job in society is incredibly important.” “There are many songwriters making a very good living today at their craft,” drummer Jerome observes. “Larry’s more of a living representation of songwriters who remember a time when many more records of diverse variety and genre actually sold to a broad listening audience. Today music is much more diverse (Continued on page 36)

Playwright Keith Stevenson embraces his Fried Meat family with his comic trilogy’s triumphant return to Pacific Resident Theatre

SHERMAN GALLERY & FRAMESTORE 4039 LINCOLN BLVD. MDR 310 305-1001 WWW.SHERMANGALLERY.COM

Keith Stevenson’s JD character, center, hosts a last supper at the Fried Meat Motel By Shanee Edwards

Playwright and actor Keith Stevenson has created an unusual brand for his theatrical trilogy. Fans of the three comedies — “Out There on Fried Meat Ridge Road,” “A Fried Meat Christmas” and “The Unfryable Meatness of Being,” all set at the Fried Meat Motel in West Virginia — have become so passionate, so obsessive, that Stevenson considers them much more than loyal audience members. He calls them the “Fried Meat family.” After various successful individual runs over the past three years at the Pacific Resident Theatre in Venice, Stevenson’s Fried Meat plays return for an encore this weekend under the guidance of Guillermo Cienfuegos, whose unconventional minimalist staging of Shakespeare’s “Henry V” played to sellout audiences at PRT from February to July. Stevenson says the inspiration for his comedy canon came from a real motel on Fried Meat Ridge Road in his native West Virginia, on a street that supposedly got its name during the Civil War. “A convoy of wagons was traveling on this road and they got shelled. One of the wagons was the chuck wagon, so the whole ridge smelled like fried meat,” Stevenson said. In creating his world, Stevenson birthed a hero for himself to play — JD, a “long-haired, very affable hillbilly of mysterious origins.” Of course, other odd characters enter the story — an artistically inclined drug addict, her gangster-

poet boyfriend and a creepy fetishist among them — but it’s these offbeat souls that create the almost absurdist comedy that has lifted the plays to a cult-like status. When the first play, “Out There on Fried Meat Ridge Road,” premiered it was scheduled for a three-week run. That turned into a six-month run and led Stevenson to win the LA STAGE Alliance’s Ovation Award for Best Playwriting for an Original Play. The second and third plays followed with similar success. While Stevenson describes his style of comedy as “farce meets magical realism,” others have called it “white trash comedy” — a label Stevenson rejects. “I resent that. I think the plays are a bit smarter than that. First of all, I don’t believe in ‘white trash’; I believe in people. So for me to call these characters white trash would be to call my own brothers and sisters from my home state white trash, which I won’t do,” Stevenson said. Whatever you call it, Westside audiences can’t seem to get enough. “It’s not uncommon for people to come back three or four times,” Stevenson said. “One guy, Ryan Smith, came to see the original play 50 times. Another lady came back 30-something times, and it’s because of the funny characters. I’ve even had friends come up to me after seeing the show and, even if I’ve known them for years, they say, ‘Can you just be JD for a little bit?’ They’d rather hang out with JD than me.” “Out There on Fried Meat Ridge

Road” super-fan Ryan Smith said the play lifted his spirits. “I was in a bad place when I first saw ‘Fried Meat.’ My mother had passed away the year before and I wasn’t dealing with the loss very well. I was down and depressed, but ‘Fried Meat’ took all that away,” Smith said. “I could relate to all the characters in the play, specifically their faults and frailties. On top of that, it was hilarious!” Stevenson embraces the obsessive nature of his fans. “If people want to be part of the Fried Meat family, we just welcome them in,” he said. So what’s it like to be a part that genealogy? “It feels like being a part of any family that loves you and makes you feel like the best parts of yourself,” Smith said. “It just so happens that my ‘family’ consists of a meth addict, her criminal boyfriend, a curmudgeon who hates Maryland, a nice young man named Mitchell and God’s grandson.” Stevenson’s “A Fried Meat Christmas” runs at 8 p.m. Friday and at 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at Pacific Resident Theatre, 703 Venice Blvd., Venice. The Sunday staging is followed at 4:30 p.m. by the original “Out There on Fried Mean Ridge Road” and at 6 p.m. by “The Unfryable Meatness of Being.” Tickets are $20 to see one play, $30 for two of the Sunday shows or $40 for the full Sunday tripleheader. Toast the chef at Whiskey Red’s Waterfront views pair well with a menu heavy on the classics

Patio diners at Whiskey Red’s area also treated to a feast for the eyes

By Richard Foss

Richard@RichardFoss.com

Whiskey Red’s

13813 Fiji Way, Marina del Rey (310) 823-4522 whiskeyreds.com There’s an industry of branding consultants who spend lots of time coming up with business names that sound clever, intriguing or might give someone the idea that they once ate at a restaurant and liked it, even if it opened yesterday. The process can take a lot of time and cost plenty. Whiskey Red’s probably spent about a minute on the same decision and made what seems like an odd choice. The restaurant used to be called Shanghai Red’s despite not serving Chinese food, and last year it changed to Whiskey Red’s despite having no particular focus on whiskey. I expected an intimate place in which craft cocktails were sipped in a masculine, clubby atmosphere. Instead I arrived at an airy, old-school waterfront restaurant where waterfront-view tables are the focus rather than the bar. With the exception of a pleasant patio by the entry, just about every seat here has some view of the marina, and even if you’ve lived here all your life it’s fun to gawk at the sailboats

and water. Most people choose to do that during their weekend buffet brunches, but it’s every bit as pleasant on a weekday evening, which was when we visited. The menu here is heavy on the classics, though a few contemporary ideas make an appearance. One of these is a kale salad with broccoli and carrot slaw, apples, currants and sunflower seeds with a peanut butter dressing. We ordered a half portion, which was a decently sized starter for two. The flavors were excellent together; we were told that the

effect is delicious. We departed from the theme for a classic mai tai, which was slightly sweeter than I prefer but generously poured. After the cocktails we switched to wine, a Sokol-Blosser white blend that goes particularly well with seafood and a HandCraft Petite Syrah. The wines suited our meals, a pistachio-crusted halibut and a New York steak. Steaks and seafood are the focus here, though a few sandwiches, a lone chicken dish, and one pasta cover the bases for those who prefer something else. The nut-crusted halibut was good but not extraordinary — the fish was moist and flavorful, but the crust could have used a bit more spice and hadn’t crisped the way it can when all the stars come into alignment. It was served with some good garlic mashed potatoes, lightly sautéed spinach with lemon, and a shallot sauce that the chef put together because we had asked whether such a sauce was available. It usually isn’t, but this one added a dimension to the fish and should always be included. The steak was one of the best I’ve had in some time. I usually prefer the fattier but more flavorful rib eye steak to a New York steak, but this one was exceptionally good and very

We also tried a clam chowder that was very successful, the clams and potato in a buttery, rich broth with plenty of herb flavor. This was a time-honored recipe well executed, and even my non-chowder-loving companion enjoyed it. In honor of the name, we decided to start with a whiskeybased cocktail called The Gold Rush: Woodford Reserve bourbon, honey and lemon juice. Invented in New York a decade ago, I had never had one before but I will certainly have one again, as the sweet-and-sour

tender. Once again the chef had created a sauce to order, brandy and pepper with what might have been a bit of au jus from the steak or a prime rib. It was so good that I dipped my french fries in it and my companion daubed bits of his dinner roll to catch every last bit. Those fries were dotted with herbs and very crisp, and the steamed vegetables that also accompanied the steak were nicely al dente.

ArgonautNews.com

For dessert we decided to split a chocolate whiskey cake served with raspberry topping as well as a scoop of ice cream over crumbled biscuit. The cake was good enough that we thought it might be the work of a specialty baker, but our server corrected us proudly and said it was made in house. Our meal was very good, if pricey. Ocean view property is not cheap, and dinner for two with two cocktails and two glasses of wine ran $140 — fine

for a special occasion but a bit above my everyday range. I did notice an offering of three-course sunset dinners for only $21, which is a real deal for a very good experience. Despite the curious marketing strategy, Whiskey Red’s has solid cooking and a beautiful setting, and you can even get a good cocktail while you’re there. Whiskey Red’s opens at 11 a.m. Mondays through Fridays, at 10 a.m. Saturdays and at 9 a.m. Sundays. See a full menu online.

Spectacular and Panoramic Views

“With expansive ocean views and just minutes from Silicon Beach, this Hamptons-style beach house defines Playa del Rey coastal living,” says agent Stephanie Younger. “The feeling of gracious yet relaxed elegance begins at the friendly Dutch door, which opens to a grand foyer leading to the great room with dramatic coffered ceilings, a stunning stone fireplace, ebony-colored wood floors, and views from every window. The astounding chef’s kitchen with custom cabinetry and Viking appliances has an expansive marble topped island, anchoring the kitchen as this home’s gathering place. A wall of French doors provides an outdoor escape to the pool, spa and 180 degrees of ocean view. A sweeping staircase leads to the guest suite with generous outdoor patio and views toward Catalina, and then to the luxurious master retreat with soaring ceilings, cozy fireplace, and two ocean view balconies. The master bath has divine countertops, stunning glass shower and a jetted tub for pure relaxation. Featuring two additional beds and baths, an office with wall to wall custom cabinetry, exquisite details and views from every room, this spectacular home offers the finest of coastal California living.”

Ever since commercial artist Harvey Ball was paid $45 in 1963 to create the happy face for State Mutual Life Assurance Company of Worcester as a way to raise employee morale at the company, the bright yellow circle with dark ovals for eyes has become a global emblem of love or scorn, depending on one’s worldview. In his latest work, Ryan McIntosh appears to celebrate both sides of the happy face coin, superimposing the icon on everything from those Santa Monica-verboten plastic grocery bags to nuclear mushroom clouds.

ART Dropping a Mangabomb First-time publisher brings English translations of Japanese comics to the U.S. It was a home sale that would change his destiny. When Kenichi “Keith” Nakamaru struggled with confidence issues while beginning a real estate career many years ago, he always fell back on the positive lessons about choosing a path and moving forward in life embedded within “Otokogi,” a manga comic book created by Hiroshi Motomiya. Five years ago, Nakamaru sold his home in Nagano, Japan, to move to the U.S. As it would turn out, the buyer was one Hiroshi Motomiya. Yes, that Hiroshi Motomiya. Today, with the Japanese cartoonist’s blessing, Nakamaru publishes an English translation of Motomiya’s most famous comic, the corporate drama “Salaryman Kintaro,” in the pages of Mangabomb magazine, Nakamaru’s free monthly manga anthology. He published Mangabomb’s

Mangabomb founder Kenichi “Keith” Nakamaru fourth issue last month and will distribute the fifth on Dec. 10. Now working for an automotive parts supplier in Huntington Beach, the first-time publisher is already distributing 30,000 copies of Mangabomb throughout Southern California. Westside drop points include Mitsuwa

Marketplace in Mar Vista as well as Giant Robot and a handful of other locations in the Sawtelle District. In October’s third issue, Nakamaru even debuted his own story, an ancient China-set tale called “Greatwall: Legend of the Solar Fist” and drawn by Landon Ruan, an artist he befriended at Anime Expo this summer. It’s a far cry from importing auto parts. “This is a totally different area and I’m learning new things every day,” Nakamaru said. And just like a chapter of “Salaryman Kintaro,” the story of Mangabomb is “to be continued…” Visit mangabombusa.com — Michael Aushenker

Westside Happenings environmentalism-o Man and nature collide in artwork rife with paradoxes when Argentine artist and architect Javier De Aubeyzon presents nine paintings in a Santa Monica exhibition curated by friend and fellow Argentine architect Flavio Bisciotti. De Aubeyzon’s show features two themes: ”Urban Industrial Landscapes,” juxtaposing technology and nature; and “Natural Environmental Landscapes,” exploring global warming and its impact. “Two contradictory images interact in one, with a clear message,” said De Aubeyzon. “He is able to combine a hyper-real painting style with depictions of unique environments,” Bisciotti said. De Aubeyzon’s “Environmentalism-o” opens from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, and continues through Feb. 5 at FABstudio, 2001 Main St., Santa Monica. (424) 744-8156; fabstudiola.com

successful path in tech, but “it does start at first grade.” She insisted that traditional gender roles that remain especially prevalent in Asian cultures are falling by the wayside and becoming less of a barrier as more and more people work from home. What about women helping others of their gender to get ahead? Sure, “junior-thinking women” indulging in backstabbing and boudoir-driven career advancement do still exist, Lee said, however “that’s why likeminded women have to band together.” Among the panel’s attendees hungry for advice during the Q & A: Karen Lin, an engineer trying to launch a financial services company; and Sharon Herzog, a Santa Barbara resident working for her husband’s family business who wants to create her own start-up. Lin deemed such panels helpful simply by raising awareness of the issue. “It helps encourage people to create the type of environment we need to foster in order to help women in engineering,” she said. “One of my missions is to drive more women into tech,” said Herzog, who actively supports Malibu-based Dreamfunder, a crowdfunding site raising seed money for women entrepreneurs. Anecdotally, TechWeek’s crowd on Nov. 21 seemed predominantly male. However, to the organizers’ credit, the female presence was sizable and diverse—both ethnically and professionally —while several panels across the two days were female-themed or -driven. “This event is better than most, for sure,” Lee said. michael@argonautnews.com

VENICE BEACH PHOTO WORKSHOP

Personal Injury

Learn to tell stories through pictures from three of L.A.’s top photojournalists during their inaugural Venice Beach Photo Workshop, a daylong instructional walking tour of the boardwalk, canals and hidden walk streets of Venice. Ted Soqui (The Argonaut, LA Weekly, Time, Robert Berman Gallery) and Jonathan Alcorn (Reuters, Getty Images, The New York Times) lead the hands-on workshop, which also includes a lunch discussion with Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Nick Ut. While a Vietnam War correspondent, Ut captured the unforgettable photograph of a girl running from a napalm attack that has become an iconic representation of the horrors of war. Soqui covered the Los Angeles riots. The day starts at 11:30 a.m. at Alcorn’s Venice Boulevard studio and wraps up on the beach at dusk after visits to the Venice Beach graffiti and skate parks as well as the Venice Beach Freakshow. Tuition is $200; bring your own camera and enough memory card space for hundreds of pictures.

If Bonnie did another song of mine it would be welcome whether it sold or didn’t sell, but the amount of money it would make wouldn’t be enough to pay your phone bill for a year.” McNally’s taken to giving out albums at gigs. At one recent Cinema show, grizzled barflies and beanie-capped millennials nodded their heads to his Chet Baker-style ballad “Everything I Do Comes Easy”; some swiveled across the linoleum floor to the rousing grooves of “Mercy, Pity, Peace and Love,” “Shelter” and “The Motown Song.” Several dropped crumpled bills into the tip jar, a deeply patina coffee can stationed by the cramped stage. “The goal of writing is to illuminate the human condition, to try to get underneath that. … You’re standing up there onstage talking about life, and you can look into the eyes of people and they’re saying, ‘Yeah, I’ve been there too,’” he says. “That’s a pretty magical moment.” Larry John McNally plays at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, at Cinema Bar, 3697 Sepulveda Blvd., Culver City.
