Get Social 11 ways to go outside and meet new people this summer

Ever notice that the more technology brings us together, the less we find ourselves face-to-face with other living, breathing human beings? Summer is no time to be glued to a smartphone screen. Give your Tinder-swiping finger a rest and explore any of these 11 summer activities in which people actually meet, talk, learn and play together. From co-ed flag football on the beach to singles mixers on the water and hobby classes with an ocean view, now’s the time to get creative, get fit and get social!

1

All Aboard the Do Good Bus They call it “altruistic adventurism.” You might call it a philanthropic party bus. Once per month, the Do Good Bus leaves from the Culver City Metro Station (8817 Washington Blvd.) to somewhere in Greater Los Angeles where somebody needs a hand. To add another element of fun, the destination is a mystery until the bus arrives, which organizers say helps ensure that do-gooders arrive with an open mind. Past rides have included building a school garden, assembling bicycles for kids and even painting a mural. Riders pay $45, which includes a donation to the cause, and Whole Foods provides a boxed lunch. The next rides are May 24 and June 20. dogoodbus.com PAGE 10 Westside 2015 Summer Guide

Co-ed Flag Football on the Beach These self-diagnosed flag football fanatics don’t let competition get in the way of a good time. The rules are written to make sure women and men get equal playing time — scoring plays count for extra if a women touches the ball, for instance — and to prevent injuries from overambitious play. The motto is “safety first, then sportsmanship, fun, exercise and competition.” Water, Gatorade and energy bars are provided free. The best part, however, may be the location: Games happen at 11 a.m. every Saturday on the beach in front of Navy Street and Ocean Front Walk. meetup.com/Santa-Monica-Co-Ed-Beach-FlagFootball

Santa Monica Pier Historic Waking Tour Just about everyone this side of the 405 has visited the Santa Monica Pier, but few of us know its story. Built in 1909 as part of an early sewage disposal system, the pier’s form and (thankfully) function have evolved numerous times over the past century. Hour-long historic tours begin in front of the carousel building at 11 a.m. each Saturday and Sunday — just look for the guides wearing blue shirts. Perhaps the man or

Summer Destinations

Escape the city on a weekend getaway to Ojai, San Diego, Big Bear or Catalina

Catalina Casino, Avalon

Los Angeles may be the only metropolis in the world where you can go skiing in the morning and sun yourself on the beach in the afternoon. Southern California is home to magnificent shorelines, spectacular mountain views, unique historical landmarks, fine dining, lively nightlife, indulgent spa experiences and even agricultural and wine-making tours. We owe it to ourselves to seize the weekend and explore all that awaits just a few hours away. NORTH: OJAI The smallest city in Ventura County, Ojai makes for a charming getaway without having to drive too far. About 75 miles from Santa Monica, this health- and spirituality-focused town is nestled in the mountains and famous for its groves of organic pixie tangerine trees and Spanish colonial revival architecture. Ask a local where to go in Ojai and likely the first place they’d send you is The Farmer and the Cook, a café, grocery store and general hangout. From there you can explore the town’s bookstores and unique boutiques such as FiG Curated Living and Summer Camp. Trek out for a visit to any of several local wineries or stop by the Casa Barranca Winery Tasting Room inside downtown Ojai’s Spanish colonial revival arcade to try a variety of locally made organic wines. If you’re after romance or relaxation, stay the weekend at the Ojai Valley Inn and Spa. Couples can relax side-by-side PAGE 20 Westside 2015 Summer Guide

during a “together massage,” and those seeking clarity in life can get a reading from the spa’s energy healer. If you’re looking to awaken your creative spirit, stay at Ojai Valley Inn’s artist cottage, where an artist in residence can guide you along the path to self-expression. If you’d rather spend time outdoors, Ojai offers many spectacular hiking trails. Trek along Sespe Creek to encounter natural hot springs, and be on the lookout for Western brush rabbits, grey fox and a variety of wild birds. If you want to see the beauty of the natural chaparral from horseback, enjoy a sunset ride with the Ojai Valley Trail Riding Company. ojaivisitors.com SOUTH: SAN DIEGO San Diego offers visitor experiences that range from kidfriendly or educational to a day of fun in the surf and sand followed by a wild night in the Gaslamp Quarter.

Big Bear Lake

La Jolla Shores Coastline, San Diego A daytime visit to Belmont Park on Mission Beach provides lots of varied entertainment, including roller coasters and a wave machine for body surfing. Offering a more serene day at the beach, Coronado is consistently voted among the best beaches in the country, and the historic Hotel del Coronado is a must-see. Old Town San Diego, with its historic mission and villas alongside myriad quaint shops and restaurants, is always good for a stroll. History buffs will enjoy the Maritime Museum, where you can explore the Star of India, a fully rigged iron windjammer. Built in 1863, this one-time salmon boat is the world’s oldest active ocean vessel. The museum’s Soviet-era, diesel-electric Foxtrot-class submarine is also worth a look. When the sun goes down, head over to the historic Gaslamp Quarter in downtown San Diego. This 16-block cluster of restored 19th-century buildings offers some of the best dining and craft cocktails in Southern California. For a hand-shaken sazerac or other oak-aged beverage, head to The Hopping Pig Gastropub, where there’s also a healthy wine list and plenty of beer on tap. If the salt air has you craving seafood, check out Blue Point Coastal Cuisine for fresh oysters, seafood towers and lobster and crab specialties. PAGE 22 Westside 2015 Summer Guide

Adventurers young and old may enjoy the San Diego Safari Park, home to some of Africa’s most impressive wildlife. Thrill the kids with a balloon ride over the park or enjoy a grownups-only Roar and Snore outing, an overnight camping experience that offers an after-hours look at the animals and an evening relaxing by a campfire. sandiego.org EAST: BIG BEAR Most people think of Big Bear as a winter destination for skiing and snowboarding. It also makes for a terrific sunny weekend getaway in summer, when the area is much less crowded, rentals are cheap, and temperatures hover around 80 degrees. About 115 miles from LAX, Big Bear offers beautiful blue lake views, fresh pine-scented air and relief from the fast pace of city life. Big Bear Lake offers dozens of options for warm-weather outdoor activities. Rent a speedboat or zip around on a WaveRunner to feel the wind in your face, or enjoy nature at a slower pace through a guided kayak tour or stand-up paddleboard rental. (Continued on page 24)

If you want to stay on land, hike to the top of Snow Summit or even ride the mile-long Scenic Sky Chair through the San Bernardino National Forest to the top, where you’ll find yourself 8,200 feet above sea level. ActionZipline provides zip line and Segway tours of the forest. Dining options are most plentiful in the main part of town, known as The Village. Try Madlon’s Restaurant for a brunch complete with all-you-can-eat made-to-order pancakes and waffles, Sweet Basil Bistro for cocktails and appetizers, or the Peppercorn Grill for a hearty steak. There’s a Starbucks on Big Bear Road, and it’s always packed. bigbear.com WEST: SANTA CATALINA ISLAND Santa Catalina Island is just 22 miles offshore from L.A. Take a one-hour boat trip out of Long Beach or a 15-minute helicopter ride with Island Express and you’ll be there faster than you can get to the Valley on the 405. Before Spanish explorers arrived in 1542, Native Americans had been thriving on Catalina for nearly 7,000 years. Much of the island’s rugged natural beauty remains, both on land

and undersea. Explore remote parts of the island through a Catalina Island Conservancy Jeep Eco Tour, and see the remarkable diversity of ocean life through scuba diving, snorkeling or a glass-bottom boat tour. The island also offers plenty of modern comforts— most of them centered in Avalon, Catalina’s port city. Crescent Avenue is Avalon’s man drag, and dining options range from casual to upscale. Locals recommend CC Gallagher for sushi, Steve’s Steakhouse for a farm-inspired meal, or, if you want to get gussied up, the Avalon Grill on the waterfront for cocktails, New American cuisine and bayside seating with a spectacular harbor view. The iconic Catalina Casino, the island’s most visible landmark, is a must. The casino is not a gambling hall, it’s a gorgeous art deco entertainment venue replete with old-school Hollywood glamour. Take the casino walking tour to discover its rich history then wander through the Catalina Island Museum, where you’ll learn how chewing gum magnate Philip K. Wrigley transformed the island into a tourism destination while preserving much of its history. The newest and most thrilling way to take in the picturesque Avalon Bay and the blue-green waters is the Catalina Zip Line Eco tour. This guided two-hour adventure takes visitors through five zip lines at speeds up to 45 miles per hour. ª catalinachamber.com
