The Westside’s Top 10 Happy Hours for Foodies Forget bar peanuts: Some restaurants are putting their best food forward for the early crowd — and at special prices, too By Shanee Edwards In a dark and distant past, happy hour meant slurping cheap draft beers while stuffing chicken fingers into your mouth just to save a few bucks. For Westsiders, this is no longer the case. Many local restaurants and bars are putting their best food forward for the early crowd, offering specially priced epicurean achievements along with specialty beers, wines and cocktails. These happy hours with gourmet flair will put your taste buds on overdrive.

10. La Vecchia Cucina

A Santa Monica fixture for more than two decades, this café was reinvented in 2006 by the Mollica brothers, who incorporated family recipes brought all the way from Sicily. The bar really gets buzzing at happy hour, so get there early to grab a seat. Breathe in the sizzling garlic aroma as you enjoy $5 to $6 handcrafted pizzas and $5 house wine. La Vecchia Cucina, 2654 Main St., Santa Monica. Happy hour is from 5 to 7 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. (310) 399-7979; lavecchiacucina.com PAGE 12 Westside 2014 Dining Guide

The black tiger shrimp sauté in a garlic-spicy white wine sauce, only $8, goes great with any white wine. Sara the Wine Bar, 11800 Jefferson Blvd., Playa Vista. Happy hour is from 5 to 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and from 4 to 7 p.m. on Fridays. (424) 228-4750; sarathewinebar.com

Five Desserts to Die for

From fresh-baked giant cookies to decadent chocolate soufflé, enjoy some of the Westside’s most satisfying sweets By Chloe Jory Juice cleanses, raw foods other health-conscious diet options are all the rage in Southern California, but there’s still plenty of room left for dessert. I’ve scoured the Westside in search of the perfect sweet treat. From giant cookies to chocolate soufflé, here are five of the best desserts I’ve found this side of the 405:

Truxton’s Bistro Cookie

Truxton’s classic dessert is a skillet-baked chocolate chip cookie that’s not to be missed. But make sure you bring a date, because this oversized confection is made to share. Gooey in the center and drizzled with caramel and chocolate, the extra-sweet giant cookie ($7.98) is served fresh out of the oven with a hefty scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream. It’s safe to say that straying from my gluten-free diet for a night was worth it. Better eat fast before it melts!

“Country barbecue shack in the city! Morfia’s has a real brick smoker, crucial for getting the traditional product. Sinners and Saints Gluten-Free Tiramisu

Going gluten-free means missing out on some favorite desserts — unless you’re at Sinners and Saints. The signature gluten-free tiramisu ($10) is a delight you won’t want to pass up, whether or not you’re watching your wheat. Fluffy and perfectly balanced, it’s a little slice of heaven that finishes with just the right amount of espresso bite. There’s nothing quite like a good chocolate soufflé, and The Good Pizza’s take on this classic dish (available exclusively at the Playa location) is served warm out of the oven and overflowing with molten dark chocolate. Matches Made in Heaven The Westside offers inventive food and beverage pairings you won’t find anywhere else

By Shanee Edwards This isn’t your grandparent’s cocktail hour. Liquor and craft beer tastings have become high-concept events at Westside restaurants, including careful food pairings modeled after wine-tasting events. If a champagne and bacon pairing sounds too divine to be true, keep reading to find out how you too can please your belly and your soul. Café Del Rey is offering perhaps the most consistently exciting drink and food pairing events on the Westside. Located in Marina del Rey, the beachfront eatery doesn’t limit itself to just wine events. Past happenings include a fivecourse Bourbon cocktail and food pairing that married wild boar and grits with a Blanton’s bourbon vanilla old fashion. PAGE 28 Westside 2014 Dining Guide

There was also a pairing that included braised rabbit with an Herbsaint original Sazerac whiskey cocktail, and the evening ended with a dessert course of blackberry and pecan pie with savory ice cream, whiskey sauce and a Buffalo Trace “white dog” cocktail with mulling spices. The Wine Expo in Santa Monica offers a monthly — get ready for this — champagne and bacon pairing event. For $30 you get to taste five different champagnes along with five radically different types of bacon, each provided by baconfreak.com. A past menu included a New Zealand smoked lamb bacon and several American pork bacons. Included in the tasting are olives, nuts and bread, with the full food menu available à la carte. Matches... Continued from page 28 Two other great tastes that taste great together are grilled cheese and beer. Andrew Steiner of Andrew’s Cheese Shop in Santa Monica is hosting two such pairings in April. For $47.50, pairings include salad, four courses of mac and cheese paired with four specialty beers, and a dessert course of an Imperial Stout Float with French vanilla ice cream. This is comfort food on foodie steroids. A local favorite of Loyola Marymount University students is Cinco. The Manchester Avenue hangout holds regular tasting events that have included the “Strand Tap Takeover,” in which various beers from the local Strand Brewing Company, such as 24th Street Pale Ale and Cherry Ito-Weisse, are paired with “drunk tacos” made with beer-battered shrimp. Upper West in Santa Monica also offers regular cocktail and food pairing events. Recently the restaurant held a special fiveExplore the intricacies of fine cheeses at Andrew’s Cheese Shop

Matches... Continued from page 30 course dinner with Herradura Tequila pairings. Some of the morsels included were coconut-poached pescado blanco and a braised goat leg with chorizo sweet-corn flan. Sound too exotic? There was also Oaxacan pizza, called a memelita. Dessert was a coconut pudding inside a chocolate shell paired with Herradura Port Cask Finish Repasado. The event was offered for $55 per person. Check the web for upcoming pairings. The new wine shop on the block is Bar and Garden in Culver City, a charming hideaway in the arts district. A recent event called the “Cigareets, Whuskey and Wild Women Tasting” encouraged ladies to wear flat shoes since it was a walking event. Starting from the Hinge Modern art museum, guests tasted three different spirits then enjoyed a cocktail made with each, accompanied by cheese and crackers. Guests then walked to the nearby Muddy Leak, a European-inspired café with a an outdoor patio and full taco bar included, before ending the evening at Bar and Garden for dessert and sweet wine, all for $42 per person.

Some of the most intercontinental pairings seem to be happening at The South End on Abbott Kinney. The restaurant recently held a Moroccan wine tasting that included charcuterie and a special pizza with a spicy sausage. Future plans include a tasting of Slovenian wines, including several classic whites and some very interesting reds. South End is also working on an event highlighting the best of Israeli wines. Tasting prices vary, but those shopping for a bottle will receive a 30% discount the night of the tasting. Once every couple of months, Tony P’s Dockside Grill in Marina del Rey hosts special beer dinners that offer 50 feasters a five-course meal with food designed to compliment five carefully chosen craft beers. A Celtic Beer Dinner held in honor of St. Patrick’s Day ($60 per person) paired Angry Orchard Cider and Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey with Celtic Nachos, made with potato skins instead of tortilla chips. A Scottish beer called Wee Heavy came with a beef and Guinness stew, and the dessert course paired Young Double Chocolate Stout with English Trifle pudding. The next beer dinner takes place in May, possibly with a Cinco de Mayo theme.
