aving trouble tackling the treadmill? Does peddling a stationary bike make you feel like you’re getting nowhere? Maybe it’s time to take a break from the gym, get out under the sunshine and explore. Venice-based fitness trainer Ashley Patton teaches weekly yoga and spin classes inside the Sweat, Cyclepathic and Hustle and Flow Fitness studios, but she also loves outdoor exercise. “First of all, it’s free! Who doesn’t like that? Second, the weather’s beautiful year-round in Southern California,” said Patton, whose 1-year-old baby girl is often comfortably secured to mom’s chest during workouts. Outdoor workouts can benefit more than the body. “The healthy benefits to exercising outside of a gym include fresh air and vitamin D. It’s also profoundly grounding to be in Mother Nature,” Patton said. (Just don’t forget the sunblock, she cautions. And maybe a hat.) 10 • Fitness Health & Beauty Guide 2015

Play the Playa Links Putting Course

Playa Vista’s Crescent Park is located just south of Jefferson Boulevard and west of Playa Vista Drive. There are several lovely fountains, but the best-kept secret is a golf putting course that’s perfect for beginners. Exercise isn’t just about sweat. There’s a certain Zen to practicing your short game in this quiet neighborhood park while taking in ocean breezes.

Pick up a stick at the Mar Vista Roller Hockey Rink

With two Stanley Cup wins under their belts, the Los Angeles Kings are slowly turning L.A. into a hockey town. Sharing the puck-luck is the Mar Vista Recreation Center, which recently added an outdoor roller hockey rink. Adult hockey pickup games happen between 8 and 10 p.m. on most Tuesdays and Thursdays. Swing on the sand at the Santa Monica Rings

Think of it as a playground with some serious fitness potential. Just south of Santa Monica Pier, the Santa Monica Rings offer an incredible upper-body workout that’s super-fun. There are also ropes, swings, balance beams and monkey bars to make for a relatively complete gymnastics circuit.

Join the Marina Walkers Fitness Club crowd

Medical professionals are becoming more and more vocal about the dangers of sitting too much, but that’s hard to avoid if you work in front of a computer. The American Heart Association recommends walking for 30 minutes per day to help improve overall health, but that doesn’t have to be a lonely pursuit. The Marina Walkers is an informal social club who meet at 7 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to walk a 2½-mile loop starting from the Marina del Rey Public Library, 4533 Admiralty Way. If you need extra motivation, Fridays often end with cocktails. Visit meetup.com and search “Marina Walkers” to join.

Ride the Marvin Braude and Ballona Creek bike trails

Climb the Santa Monica or Culver City stairs

An essential destination for those who prefer to sweat with a view, the Santa Monica Stairs wend their way between houses and under trees up and down the canyon side at 4th Street and Adelaide Drive. The two staircases, one stone and the other wood, are sure to make you feel the burn and draw everyone from “Montana Moms” trying to lose the baby weight to local firefighters dressed in full protective gear. Parking is tricky, so carpool if you can. The Culver City Stairs also reach great heights — 375 feet above sea level to reach the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook, where a wildlife observation and interactive nature center — complete with restrooms and water fountains — is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays. There are also less-strenuous dirt trails. Find the trailhead at the intersection of Jefferson Boulevard and Hetzler Road.

If walking sounds like living in the slow lane, bike to your heart’s content — and far from the madding traffic — along the 22-mile paved Marvin Braude Bike Trail, which stretches along the ocean from Will Rogers State Park south to Torrance County Beach. With plenty of places to stop for a light lunch or even a cold beer, the bike trail is a fun and fit way to spend a day at the beach. Rather than struggle to find beach parking, start your journey on the Ballona Creek Bike Path, which stretches seven miles from Syd Kronenthal Park (3459 McManus Ave.,

This is no ordinary day at the beach: the Santa Monica Rings include a whole playground full of bars, ropes and swings.

Explore the Venice Recreation Center and Muscle Beach

The 22-mile Marvin Braude Bike Trail stretches from Will Rogers State Park to Torrance, passing through Venice Beach along the way.

Outdoor basketball, handball, paddle tennis and volleyball courts await at the Venice Beach Recreation Center (1800 Ocean Front Walk). Roy Elghanayan sat down with Featured Columnist, Gisselle Acuña to learn more about Krav Maga and the perks that come with a membership at REKM® National Training Center. Q: What is Krav Maga? A: The literal meaning broken down is combat (Krav) contact

(Maga). The entire defense system uses close range fighting. Originally designed for the Israeli Army’s Elite Special Forces units, it became a mandatory skill set for the entire Israeli military. Today Krav Maga is used in all branches of law enforcement and military divisions throughout the world.

Q: What makes Krav Maga different from other martial arts styles, such as Karate, Judo, or Jujitsu? A: Krav Maga is a defense system designed for the ultimate

survival against great odds in any given scenario and environment. Krav Maga focuses on exploiting the opponent’s weak spots in response to an impending attack. We expose our students to a variety of skills that include taking ordinary objects and using them as a self-defense weapon that can protect them in the event of an attack. Our students learn defense moves for the real world. Other forms of martial arts are designed and taught in controlled environments. There are a lot of rules and limitations


as well. Krav Maga has no rules, making it more simple and versatile.

Q: What’s the difference between the Full Experience and the 50/50 program at your studio? Q: How is REKM® different from other Krav Maga studios? A: The 50/50 Mix offers more of a fitness component while infusing some basic self-defense tactics. Eat like a caveman? Drink butter-infused coffee? With so many competing nutrition plans, it’s hard to know where to start. But there are answers …

C

hoosing a diet is like enlisting for battle, only the enemy is constantly changing. First we heard sugar was the adversary. A few years later, fats became the fearsome foe. More recently, combatting the urge to consume carbohydrates became the primary mission. With these and so many other diet plans competing for attention, it’s hard to know what to do. Call it the fog of diet war. “I’ve been a dietician for 36 years. I’ve seen diets come and I’ve seen diets go. Mostly they go and then get recycled,” said Julie L. Oldenburg, the dietician for Marina Del Rey Hospital’s Marina Weight Loss Center. So what should people look for in a diet? That depends on you. “If you believe fatty foods have gotten you into trouble as far as gaining weight, then work on reducing fats in

your diet. Or if you feel it’s the carbs — that you eat a lot of starch — then the goal is to work on reducing those,” Oldenburg said. Overall, Oldenburg prefers diet plans “that aren’t terribly faddish” and that include all the nutrients people need to be healthy. These include Weight Watchers and TOPS (Taking Off Pounds Sensibly), she said. “I like Weight Watchers because most people need support, and they are able to provide it in a variety of ways. I like TOPS because they talk a lot about healthy eating and exercise,” Oldenburg said. But she also added that losing weight is less about which diet you choose and more about examining your own personal issues with food. Santa Monica resident Jennie Evenson, author of “Shakespeare for Screenwriters,” said Weight Watchers worked for her.


“The weight came off slowly, which was good. The best thing about the diet for me was the food journaling. It helped me to be mindful about eating better types of food,” Evenson said. Other popular diets whispered about in Westside yoga studios include the paleo diet, which focuses on foods that our hunter-gatherer ancestors would recognize — low carb, no refined sugar, lots of meat and fruit and vegetables, no processed foods. There’s also the blood-type diet, which suggests eating certain foods said to function best with specific blood types. Oldenburg is doubtful of both. “They take you in a very restrictive direction, and that’s not the real world,” she said. “I always tell people you have

Diets that feel too restrictive are also likely to fail. Instead of obsessing over inches, first find healthy foods you like to eat.

And I don’t know anything [regarding dieting] that would have to do with a blood type.” Scott Guthrie, a personal trainer at Gold’s Gym in Venice, doesn’t really recommend diets to his clients. Instead, he focuses on calories. “The best thing you can do is cut down on your total caloric intake. If you do go on a crash diet, you’ll lose weight, but the minute you stop you’ll just gain it back again,” he said. Guthrie also suggests that his clients “eat more often, in smaller meals — that will increase your resting metabolic rate.” For those who want a specific plan, there’s a new high-profile battle plan in the weight loss arsenal called the Bulletproof Diet. The diet cuts out “toxic” foods such as carbs, soy and wheat in favor of more unprocessed food. He emphasizes eating plenty of healthy fats in order to feel satisfied and energetic throughout the day. “The thing about most currently popular diets is they miss out on the fact that food is energy. They tell you not to eat enough food to have all the energy you’re capable of having,” he said. “The idea is that you eat so you never have a food craving. You want to maximize the amount of good stuff you get into your body while minimizing the amount of harmful things you put in your body.” Westsiders will have a chance to try Asprey’s diet and decide for themselves when the brand new Bulletproof Café opens in March on Main Street in Santa Monica. Women — and men — are skipping the scalpel to explore increasingly effective injectable cosmetic treatments Youth culture reigns supreme on L.A.’s Westside, where the sun and surf keep people active and feeling young. But what happens when the face you see in the mirror no longer reflects your sprightly point of view? The liquid facelift — also called the lunchtime facelift because it can be done in well under two hours — has become a popular alternative to traditional cosmetic surgery. Procedures rely on various injectables that can relax facial muscles or restore volume and fullness with natural collagen enzymes. “It’s not that people want to look like a different person. It’s about the maintenance of a youthful appearance that restores confidence. People wear their résumés on their faces, and this is about making them look as good as they feel,” said Dr. Grant Stevens, founder of Marina Plastic Surgery and The Institute medispa in Marina del Rey. 22 • Fitness Health & Beauty Guide 2015

are either trying to get rid of wrinkles or restore volume to hollowing or sagging parts of their face. In terms of managing wrinkles and minimizing crow’s feet around the eyes, products like Botox and Dysport are a go-to solution. But if you want to return that youthful plumpness to your skin, you’ll need a cosmetic filler to do the job. “The most desired place to add volume to the face is in the cheekbone area,” Teegardin said. “If you weren’t born with really high cheekbones, what happens as we age is the masseter muscle starts to slide off the bone, and that’s when you start to get jowls. When injected into the cheekbone, a filler like Juvaderm Voluma returns that apple-like look to your cheeks. From the profile, it makes your face look a bit more angular and it lifts that skin back up again.” Coleen Janeway, clinic director for Epithereal Skincare in Marina del Rey, said one of her hottest treatment options is Sculptra, a poly-L-lactic acid that stimulates collagen for a natural look. “In their 30s women and men start to think about the small facial lines that develop, but as we get into our late 30s through 50s our patients begin to focus on the inevitable gravity drop. If asked, most people can live with one or two character wrinkles but don’t want the sag,” Janeway said. “We look at the patient but also listen: When you look in the mirror, what bothers you?” Not every aesthetic goal can be accomplished without surgery. Injectable treatments tend to be effective for six months to about two years. In some cases it’s a way of doing maintenance or buying time before resorting to more pricey and permanent surgery, Teegardin said. Stevens said he often directs patients seeking surgery consultations to the nonsurgical portion of his practice, which also offers liquid rhinoplasty. “There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Many people do a combination of both. We’re finding that even the surgery we’re doing is less invasive because we’re coupling up treatments,” Stevens said. It isn’t just women getting nonsurgical treatments. Janeway said she’s treated husbands who came in after seeing their wives’ positive results.

“Men are all about the Botox,” Teegardin said. “They make up a smaller percentage than women and they’re more on the down low with it, but laser hair removal is now very popular with men as well.” So many men have become interested in cosmetic procedures that Stevens has started a third practice entirely devoted to guys: Marina ManLand. “We have our own facial for men. Our skin is thicker and we have beards, so the typical facial is sort of an under-treatment. Men can tolerate and, frankly, need much more to remove the barnacles. Repairing sun damage and age spots in men has exploded at our practice,” Stevens said. Stevens also specializes in coolsculpting, a body contouring process that “freezes” fat cells so that the body will dispose of them naturally. “Forty-two percent of our non-surgical body contouring is for men, which is almost unheard of because the baseline [for men] in aesthetic surgery is about 10%,” he said. The bottom line: “When you are satisfied with the way your skin looks and feels, you feel better about yourself. It’s a boost in self-esteem,” Janeway said. “There are some pretty amazing technologies on today’s market and many qualified injectors in the Westside area who can really give a natural look.”

Edward Cannan, founder of Botan health drink, on the power of plant-based protein Edward Cannan, 32, began his personal health journey as a winemaker in Paris. Plants aren’t usually associated with protein. How did you make that discovery?

I was forced to look into an alternative because of a poor diet, heavy in rich foods like meat and whey, that resulted in me having extremely high uric acid — almost to the point of having full-blown gout. I started to realize that protein is found in plants such as peas, beans, chia seeds, quinoa and even soy. The quality of that protein will differ depending on the plant, but plant-based nutrition has been used in various countries where billions of people are healthy — India, most notably — and chronic diseases are much less prevalent.

That sounds a bit like the paleo diet, except the emphasis is much more on plants.
