But don’t call the workout “Pilates.” Hirsch considers The Studio (MDR) workout to be a unique interpretation of the “Lagree Method,” which was created by fitness guru Sebastien Lagree. Ky Evans, the head trainer at The Studio (MDR), explained,

Employee and student, Janie Yeo believes the key to the Bar Method is its intensity. “Uncontrollable leg shaking will most likely happen in your first class,” she said. “That’s due to the intense isometric exercises that work your muscles to exhaustion.” According to Yeo, when some beefy men from a nearby martial arts studio came in to take a Bar Method class, “They were blown away at how difficult it was because they thought it was going to be closer to ballet, but their legs were really shaking and after class they were bushed.” While not for the faint of heart, Yeo urges us not to be afraid, claiming men and women well into Continued on Page 12

‘super foods’ for 2013 By Shanee Edwards In the last few years, scientists have determined that some foods give us more bang for our nutritional buck than others, earning them the name “super foods” for their ability to fight disease and boost our immunity levels. Television’s Dr. Oz has famously promoted such foods as blueberries, spinach and salmon as being some of the most beneficial edibles to add to your diet. The latest research brings us an exciting list of newly revealed, nutrient-dense foods to help our bodies run at optimum levels. Some of them even taste great.

Warming Herbs These tasty herbs and spices literally heat up our bodies, creating a thermogenic reaction to stimulate our digestion process. Professional health motivator and lifestyle coach Meredith Sarah Klein recommends spices like cinnamon, cloves, fennel and Indian spices. “They maximize nutrient absorption and reduce inflammation. Working with inflammation can often be a culprit behind obesity and other weight issues,” she explained. Her favorite warming herb? “Turmeric. It’s rare to find a warming spice that helps to stoke the digestive fire while also reducing inflammation – it’s truly a wonder food,” she said. Other warming herbs include cayenne, black pepper and garlic. Mushrooms These fungi, that have been hailed for their health benefits in Asia for centuries, contain the essential antioxidant nutrient selenium that helps boost your immune system and protects your cells from damage. Mushrooms also provide some of the highest levels of natural Vitamin D of any fruit or vegetable. Since mushrooms are mostly water and soak up whatever toxins they’re growing in, it’s best to choose organic when possible. Coconut Oil It used to be common for doctors to warn against eating saturated fats, but it turns out that coconut oil in its natural state (when it hasn’t been hydrogenated), is actually good for your heart. Chia Remember those little clay pots in the shape of animals that grew green hair? Yes, Chia Pets were fun to grow, but those perky TV commercials failed to tout the high nutritional content of the chia seeds. A member of the mint family, this angiosperm was originally cultivated by the Aztecs in Mexico and Guatemala and may have been as important as corn in the Aztec diet. High in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants, these seeds are the new flax and can be added into everything from smoothies to cookies. Pumpkin Seeds These tasty seeds make a great snack, particularly when you’re craving “crunch.” Pumpkin seeds are high in magnesium, which helps to reduce high blood pressure, in turn, lowering your risk for strokes or heart attacks. crunchy kale chips. Rhythm brand makes flavors like Kool Ranch and Mango Habanero. Okay, so it’s not exactly the same as eating a bag of Doritos, but kale is high in Vitamin A, Vitamin C and calcium, which is essential to women as they age. Klein suggested going local for kale and most other greens, because they can usually be found at farmers markets. “Any dark, leafy greens are nutritionally dense, especially collard greens and kale,” said Klein. “They are packed with nutrients, very versatile and can be eaten raw, cooked, put into soups or smoothies.” While she loves the idea of “super foods,” Klein emphasizes the importance of finding fresh local foods.

“From the research I’ve done, the cultures with the most longevity and longest life spans are those where people are eating a super local diet,” she said. “So no matter where you live, if you’re eating a variety of the things that are in season, you’re getting a lot of nutritional value and we don’t have to import things from so far away to make up for deficiencies, especially living in California.” Naturopathic doctor Dor Croston agrees with Klein and warns we shouldn’t get too hung up on one or two foods in our diet. “The real key to good nutrition is to avoid processed foods,” she said. Croston suggests adding a variety of foods to our plate, not just “super foods.” “Most people just stick to what they know and end up missing out nutritionally,” she said. Croston also counsels her clients to consider the source of their foods and to try to avoid GMO’s (genetically modified organisms) like corn and soy to avoid potential long-term risks like cancer. But she admits it’s difficult in our hectic lives. “I’d like everyone to eat healthy, organic food, but working and single parents can’t always do so,” she said. The most surprising thing Croston sees in her practice and as a private consultant is how guilty people feel over what they eat. “If you want to eat a piece of cake, eat it and enjoy it. Enjoy the food you eat,” she said while stressing moderation and mindfulness about what you put into your body – some pretty delicious advice. §
