Have a Bonfire on Dockweiler Beach Dockweiler State Beach has one thing no other Los Angeles-area beach can offer: bonfire pits. Load up some firewood and bring family and friends out for an afternoon in the sun followed by a cozy campfire under the stars. Pro Tip: Bonfire pits cannot be reserved and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Arrive early during busy summer weekends, as there are only about 40 of them to go around.

Hike to Inspiration Point
One of the more breathtaking hikes in Greater Los Angeles has to be the Inspiration Loop Trail from the historic Will Rogers estate to Inspiration Point above Pacific Palisades. This dog-friendly and relatively easy 2.25-mile trail offers views of the city on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other. Parasail Over Santa Monica Bay For an astonishing view of the L.A. coastline, try flying 500 or even 800 feet in the air. Parasailing trips in Santa Monica Bay offer flyers unique views of the Santa Monica and Venice piers and everything in between Malibu and Marina del Rey harbor. Parasailing harnesses accommodate two to three people (160 to 450 pounds), so first-timers don’t have to go it alone. Riders take off and land directly on the boat, but let the captain know if you want to get your feet wet.

Surfing is an essential component of the California Dream, but not many people can say they’ve actually ridden the waves off the coast of Southern California. Whether you’re new to the sport or just need to brush up on you skills, signing up for surf lessons is the best way to quit dreaming about it and do it. LMU’S PLAYA VISTA CAMPUS WILL HOUSE GRADUATE PROGRAMS FOR THE SCHOOL OF FILM AND TELEVISION AND PROVIDE SPACE FOR ACADEMIC AND CREATIVE ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS. OPENING IN FALL 2018, IT WILL BE LOCATED IN THE BRICKYARD PLAYA VISTA.
STRATEGICALLY LOCATED IN THE HEART OF PLAYA VISTA, L.A.’S BOOMING TECH HUB, LOYOLA MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY INVESTS A CENTURY OF LOS ANGELES LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE INTO SILICON BEACH PARTNERSHIPS AND FUTURE PLAYA VISTA CAMPUS
WELCOME TO SILICON BEACH AT LOYOLA MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY Loyola Marymount University is the only university in the heart of Silicon Beach and it promotes itself as “The University of Silicon Beach®.” But the LMU-Silicon Beach relationship is much deeper than geography: The two are programmatically and strategically symbiotic, as well as interwoven into the fabric of Los Angeles. LMU’s connections to its cutting-edge neighbors are myriad and growing, with courses and programs that deepen the interaction between the high-tech companies and the university’s
students, faculty and alumni. Its internationally ranked film and television, marketing, business, and engineering programs have developed industry partnerships and internship opportunities. Silicon Beach, where tech innovation thrives, is the launching pad for “global imagination,” a vision also articulated by LMU’s President Timothy Law Snyder, Ph.D. LMU is an incubator of entrepreneurialism, where world-changing ideas are imagined and formed; those ideas are then brought to life
with LMU’s Silicon Beach neighbors. In February, the university announced its new LMU Playa Vista Campus. Through a long-term lease agreement with Tishman Speyer at The Brickyard Playa Vista, LMU will occupy more than 50,000 square-feet designed for learning and creative spaces in preparation for a fall 2018 opening. LMU’s Playa Vista Campus will house graduate programs for the School of Film and Television, ranked No. 6 in USA Today’s national film school rankings. LMU will
also offer spaces for academic and creative activities and events, placing students and faculty members in the heart of L.A.’s tech innovation and creativity hub. “Silicon Beach is our game-changer,” stated LMU President Snyder in an interview with Bloomberg News. “While Silicon Valley has a lot of chip-level nerdy activity, Silicon Beach is bursting with digital media, creativity, and content creation.” For example, LMU’s M-School, a progressive center for marketing education and practice, actively partners with leading Silicon Beach marketing firms to create immersive learning experiences and mentorship projects where students apply real-world digital marketing strategies in a fast-changing marketplace. LMU M-School students collaborate with executives and teams at Deutsch LA, TBWA\Chiat\ Day, Electronic Arts, Google, Facebook, RadicalMedia and many others. LMU hosts the annual Silicon Beach Expo, the community’s largest event that brings together companies and organizations to share ideas, and spur innovation. LMU’s President Snyder sums it up by saying, “Our Jesuit education challenges intellectuals and citizens to live lives of meaning and purpose. Our home is L.A. Our neighborhood is Silicon Beach. You can learn at many places, but only LMU brings you all of the above. Many want a degree. We want those who seek to create a difference.” FOR MORE FACTS ABOUT LMU, VISIT LMU.EDU/FACTS.

Play Paddle Tennis
If ping pong and regulation tennis had a secret love child, this would be it. Paddle tennis is huge in Venice and is pretty much what it sounds like: tennis, but with a paddle rather than a racket. What’s the appeal? It’s a quicker sport than tennis on a smaller court, featuring an underhand serve and a depressurized tennis ball. There’s no charge to use one of the eleven public courts on Venice Beach. No racket? No problem. With a valid I.D. and $5 you can rent one. There are even occasional free lessons. If you’re still not sold, check out the Summer Singles matches on June 10 and 11 or the L.A. City Doubles Tournament July 15 and 16.

The 600-plus acres of the Ballona Wetlands State Ecological Reserve are home to many native flora and fauna of the Los Angeles basin. Learn more about the value and beauty of the wetlands during any number of free public tours hosted by the nonprofit Friends of Ballona Wetlands. Tour the salt marsh and dunes the second Sunday of each month, or the freshwater marsh on second and fourth Saturdays. There are also volunteer restoration opportunities and special sunset nature hikes in June and July. It may be hard to believe, but the natural world exists right here in our own backyard.

What’s better than an outdoor summer concert? A free outdoor summer concert, of course. Marina del Rey’s Summer Concert Series at Burton Chace Park spans four classical-driven Symphonic Thursdays and four rock, R&B or jazz-flavored Pop Saturdays. The Twilight Concert Series draws a diverse array of global and local talent to the Santa Monica Pier on Thursday evenings, and Playa Vista wins the family fun category with danceable daytime shows that revel in Top 40 tunes.

Join a Beach Volleyball Team
If you’re a sun worshipper who’s not inclined to just chill on the beach, find the action you’re looking for at the L.A. Beach Volleyball Meetup. These weekly Saturday games have been going strong at a secret spot near Marina del Rey for the past eight years for two reasons: the vibe is chill (even if when competition gets fierce), and players of all skill levels are welcome to compete at their own level in doubles or teams of four. Annual membership costs just $13 to cover equipment and supplies, but the first two weeks are free.

Dine at a Farmers Market
Farmers markets are about more than fresh vegetables, and the Westside is home to many of them — each with a unique vibe and most offering some killer prepared food options. The Sunday markets in Santa Monica and Mar Vista are the biggest and most diverse, featuring lively crowds, live music and frequent special activities, and the growing Saturday market in Runway at Playa Vista is pretty happening, too. Markets in Westchester, Del Rey, Venice, Culver City, Palms and El Segundo are no less special, adding plenty of local flavor to Westside life. Food truck aficionados should check out Beach Eats on Thursdays in Marina del Rey.
