Explore the Outdoors by Land, Air and Sea From biking Ballona Creek to parasailing over Santa Monica Bay, experience all the great outdoors has to offer in your own backyard By Shanee Edwards

P

ut down the remote and back away from the TV. Summer is about staying active and getting outdoors — especially on the Westside, where there’s plenty of affordable fun under the sun to suit anyone’s tastes. Whether you crave a breathtaking view from up high, feel the call to set sail on open seas or prefer to move your feet along solid ground, look no further than your own backyard. If you’re up for a great bike ride without the stress of sharing the road with Sunday drivers, head to the Ballona Creek Bike Path — a paved seven-mile trail from Culver City to Playa del Rey that connects to the beachside Marvin Braude Bike Trail that spans roughly 25 miles from Will Rogers State Beach to Torrance County Beach in the South Bay. Upgrades and cleanups by the non-profit Ballona Creek Renaissance promise a smooth and attractive ride, with views of egrets, herons, pelicans and ducks eating and wading in the waters along the way. Long-distance biker Laurel Minter of Culver City was happy to find the Ballona Creek path after relocating from Seattle. In addition to enjoying a traffic-free ride that’s devoid of potholes and stoplights, “it’s the best way to get to Playa del Rey bars and restaurants,” she said. “It’s great fun to take a leisurely ride with friends to grab a glass of wine at the beach at sunset and feel safe riding home, even after dark. It’s also great to hit the trail fast and have an uninterrupted 25-mile ride down the coast.” Learn about the 12 entrances to the Ballona Creek Bike Path PAGE 10 Westside 2014 Summer Guide

at ballonacreek.org. If you’re single and ready to mingle out on the water, check out the Single Mariners of Marina del Rey. The nonprofit club offers sailing trips for those looking for love and friendship, including lively boat parties and some over-night outings to Catalina Island. Participants need neither sailing nor dating experience to take part. Sign up for weekend excursions during club meetings at 7 p.m. on the first and third Thursdays of the month at the Pacific Mariners Yacht Club on Panay Way. Visit singlemariners.com to find out more. Indulge your inner circus performer by flying on a trapeze over the backdrop of the beautiful Santa Monica Bay. The Los Angeles chapter of the Trapeze School New York offers classes for beginning flyers in a safe, supportive environment (yes, there is a real safety net below you) right on Santa Monica Pier. Guided by professionals, you’ll feel your adrenaline rise as you swing out of your comfort zone on their apparatus. After a few tries, one of the instructors on the ground will tell you when to let go of the bar to be caught by the hands of a muscular, upside-down instructor, just like you’ve seen the pros do. Search online for Groupons and LivingSocial deals or visit losangeles.trapezeschool.com. If sunsets and moonlight really float your boat, try kayaking in the Sunset/Full Moon Paddle with the UCLA Marina Aquatic Center in Marina del Rey. Outings are held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on certain Saturdays in May and June, and it certainly sounds like a romantic evening. No kayaking (Continued on page 12)

experience is necessary. The Marina Aquatic Center also offers classes in surfing, sailing and stand-up paddle boarding. Go to marinaaquaticcenter.org to find out more. A fantastic way to see unparalleled views of the Pacific Ocean and the L.A. shoreline is by parasailing. Marina del Rey Parasailing offers floats at 500 and 800 feet with breathtaking views of Venice Beach and the Santa Monica Pier. Two or even three people can parasail together at one time, so if you happen to find a successful love match at the Single Mariners club, what better way to pop the question than on a private parasail trip? Surprises, in fact, are a Marina del Rey Parasailing specialty: the company can even arrange a wedding in the sky. Parasailors have the option of landing in the water or on the boat, depending on weather conditions. Recent first-time parasailor Jeniffer Hererla of Monterey Park admits she was scared to try the sport but is very glad she did. “I was panicking, but once you get up there you love it,” she said. Go to marinadelreyparasailing.com to make reservations. For scenic views without leaving the ground, consider a PAGE 12 Westside 2014 Summer Guide

trek to the Culver City Stairs, which ascend 375 feet to the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook. If that sounds a bit strenuous, there are also easy dirt paths that wind to the top, where an interactive nature and visitor center awaits (open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays). Wildlife on the overlook and along the way includes birds, striped snails, wild rabbits, lizards and — in the hottest months — snakes. The trailhead is at the intersection of Jefferson Boulevard and Hetzler Road, with restrooms and water fountains available at the top next to the visitor center. Back at sea level, dust off those old roller skates and get your boogie on next to the Venice Skatepark, where on most Sundays a DJ magically appears to spin some old-school grooves while skaters and roller-bladers get down. Located just off the Venice Beach boardwalk near Market Street, the skate park draws skaters who range from novice to super fly and can garner quite a crowd of spectators. Whether you’re dancing or watching, it’s a really funky way to feel the ocean breeze on your face. There is no set schedule or organizer — this is just one of those authentic Venice traditions that seems to have started decades ago.

Venice Duck Brewery OUR STORY: We are two bartenders from Venice Beach who love good beer. Venice Duck was inspired by a local legend of a guy who went to a party in the Venice canals and woke up the next day on the sidewalk covered with ducks. Dogtown Duck IPA: a badass skater duck who perfected a Burt in empty swimming pools after a morning surf sesh at P-O-P. This West Coast IPA is a blend of citra and simcoe hops. It has the perfect blend of pine, citrus, the 70s, salty air and attitude. It has just enough malt structure to support the plethora of hops that dominate the palate from start to finish. The dynamic aroma is piney, citric and slightly floral; its pungent, herbaceous flavor carries a hint of fruity ester that is quickly subdued by a lingering, mouthwatering bitterness Stoner Duck Hemp Brown Ale: a professor of easy living and smooth vibes who holds a PHD in Biochemistry. Spending sunny days rapping with fellow “doctors” on the Venice boardwalk and his evenings in the lab, he has perfected this easy drinking, nut-brown ale with just the right dosage of organic hemp. It has a backbone of caramel and toasted malts with a touch of chocolate, complimented by fresh American hops and a mild tea-like aroma from the addition of hemp seeds. The doctor is in. Lucky Duck Agave Blonde: the visionary who won Venice on a coin toss and built a grand system of salt water canals. One sip of this crisp and refreshing blonde ale enriched with agave nectar and Venice of America hops and you may just hit it big too. Light and refreshing blonde ale brewed with German malts and enriched with a touch of agave nectar. American hops brighten up the minimal sweeter tones to produce a clean, crisp finish.

“They played disco, some 80s music, Michael Jackson and the like — mostly fun, danceable tunes,” said Jennie Evenson, a Santa Monica resident who recently discovered her first skate party. Summer also offers plenty of free live outdoor music to enjoy. The Twilight Concert Series at Santa Monica Pier kicks off July 10 and continues with nine more free concerts, all from 7 to 10 p.m. Thursdays. An announcement of the series lineup is pending at santamonicapier.org. Playa Vista’s summer concert series includes six free Sunday shows in June, July and August at Concert Park (13020 Pacific Promenade), each starting at 5 p.m. The Soulville California Band performs chart topping dance hits on June 29, and the Surf City All Starts — featuring two original members of the Beach Boys and Dean Torrence of Jan & Dean — perform July 13. See playavista.com for a complete listing. The Marina del Rey Summer Concerts series in July and August at Burton Chace Park features splits the bill between four “Symphonic Thursdays” shows and four Saturday pop concerts. Bump, set and spike your way to fun

Playa del Rey beach volleyball club builds friendships one match at a time By Shanee Edwards About four years ago, George Roush was on meetup.com looking for poker groups but wanted to spend more time at the beach. He typed “volleyball” into the website and joined the first group that popped up. Roush, a publicist in Burbank, is now one of the organizers of the Los Angeles Beach Volleyball Meetup Group, which meets Saturdays in Playa del Rey. “I always liked volleyball as a kid. Everyone in the meetup was really nice, really cool. I got addicted to it,” he said. Roush said that many of the group’s members had played volleyball in high school or college and joined to get back into the sport again, but the group also welcomes those who’ve never played before. The most competitive of the bunch, the advanced doubles group, hits the sand from about 8:30 a.m. to noon. After that come more relaxed games for players of all skill levels,

with matches of doubles, threes or fours going on until early evening. “Everyone’s competitive, but no one’s a jerk. If people are being jerks to each other, we kick them out. We don’t want that kind of environment or vibe in the group. We tell them to calm down, no one’s getting a trophy at the end of the day. It’s supposed to be fun,” Roush said. While the nets, sand and sun are public, the club maintains the nets it uses and works to keep the beach clean. Members also bring food to share with the group — “everyone from doctors to college students, lawyers, actors and even Hollywood screenwriters,” he said. Volleyball as we know it began in 1895 as a game called Montonette, created by William G. Morgan, who was a director of physical education at a Massachusetts YMCA. The game was initially intended to be an indoor sport, as it was considered less strenuous than the recently invented game (Continued on page 20)

of basketball and thus more suitable for older members of the club. When an observer mentioned the volleying nature of the game, the name of the sport changed to volleyball and play eventually moved outdoors. Early adopters of volleyball included Canadian nudists, who began playing in the buff by the 1920s. Most players preferred wearing clothes, however, and soon love for the game spread all over the world. Beach volleyball, played on sand with two-member teams, was officially added to the Summer Olympics in 1996. Throughout summer, the nets at the end of Culver Boulevard in Playa del Rey also play host to tournaments for players with skill levels from amateur to nearly professional. View a schedule of events at cbva. com, the website of the

California Beach Volleyball Association. Catherine Fishback, who works at a Playa-based advertising agency, has played competitive beach volleyball in the past but now takes to her local beaches for some friendly matches. “I love the beach and it’s kind of the perfect way to get a good workout and have a good time,” Fishback said. The workout is easier on her body than other forms of exercise. “I tend to get more injuries when I’m weightlifting or working out at the gym. Playing beach volleyball is a great way stay in shape and the sand provides a very soft landing,” Fishback said. Like Rousch, Fishback credits her love of the sport to the strong community that beach volleyball creates. “The culture seems to really embrace friendship and having good times with other people. It’s not uncommon to see professionals playing with their friends, even if they’re not as good as they are,” she said. So, what’s the secret to a perfect serve? “Just focus on getting it over the net,” Fishback said. “A lot of times, the wind can be a big obstacle. The worst thing you can do is miss your serve. It you want to go a step further, focus on making the impact to the ball with a really flat hand. It will make the ball float a little bit and make it more difficult for the person on the other side to pass.” ª Visit meetup.com/LAbeachvolleyball to join the Los Angeles Beach Volleyball Meetup Group. On the first day of play, new members are asked to make a one-time donation of $10 toward equipment maintenance.
