Learn How to Sail
It’s never too late — or too early — to learn how to sail. The Marina Sunday Sailing Club pairs aspiring crew members with skippers who need extra hands on deck. Seasoned sailors pass on their knowledge to novices during sails around the bay and beyond. Try it for a day ($10) or join for a year ($50 to $100). For kids who want to get a head start, the county holds several youth sailing camps ($228 to $285, with financial aid available) that set off from Burton Chace Park throughout the summer, but sign up soon before spots fill up.

Parasail Over Santa Monica Bay See the Santa Monica Pier or Venice Beach Boardwalk from an elevation of 500 or even 800 feet! Marina del Rey Parasailing offers flyovers above the iconic Santa Monica Bay. Grab a buddy or two (parasail harnesses can accommodate up to 450 pounds), and let the captain know if you’d like to dip your toes in the water during your ride.

Make a Splash at the Beach House Dive into a host of summer water activities at the Annenberg Community Beach House. With a marvelous marble and tile deck, the pool is a historic remnant of the estate of silent film star Marion Davies and her lover, the newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. Small children can enjoy the pool-adjacent Splash Pad, a frolicfriendly fountain for little dippers, and the Beach House’s annual Cardboard Regatta (Aug. 25) and Community Picnic (July 19). Adults can enjoy kid-free Sunset Swims from 7 to 10 p.m. on July 13, Aug. 8 and Sept. 14.

Paddleboard in the Marina
One of the best ways to get a workout on the water is to take a stand up paddleboard for a spin around Marina del Rey Harbor. Try renting a board or taking a lesson for an hour or two. (Some classes even offer yoga!) With the waters in the marina generally calm, you’ll burn calories while gliding by Fisherman’s Village or Mother’s Beach. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a dolphin or two.

Tickets are $95. If the blues isn’t your thing, take a Summer Sunset Cocktail Cruise on Wednesday or Thursday nights after June 6.

Westside Summer Guide 2018 29
Weekend Getaway: Palm Springs Summer is hot, but off-season is full of bargains and still tons of fun By Jessica Koslow in the afternoon. The hikes range in difficulty, some trails allow dogs, and others are mountain bike accessible. One of the most popular to-do’s is riding the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, the world’s largest rotating tram car. Float in the air along the cliffs of Chino Canyon, all the way to Mt. San Jacinto State Park. It’s 10 minutes of awe-inspiring views. At the top — elevation 8,516 feet — you can stop for a bite, check out the natural history museum, relax in two documentary theaters, or venture out on miles of trails.
The Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa offers a lot more than just gambling In the early 1900s, Palm Springs became a haven for “health tourists,” people with medical conditions who benefitted from dry heat. In the 1920s and ’30s, the area began to attract Hollywood stars, which explains much of the city’s midcentury modern architecture. These days, Palm Springs is a tourist destination year-round. Although summer is quite hot, it’s also the season of “chill” deals and smaller crowds. Many hotels have summer deals — like the Alcazar, where if you book two weeknights you get a third free. The boutique hotel boasts Italian linens, private patios, mountain views, Townie bikes, and complimentary espresso 32 Westside Summer Guide 2018
and fresh pastries from Cheeky’s, an adorable breakfast and lunch spot right next door. Kicking the summer off in high culinary style is Greater Palm Springs Restaurant Week, taking place over three weekends for the first time. From June 1 to 17, diners can order prix fixe menus from cozy bistros, from $15 to $25 for lunch or $29 to $49 for dinner. Try the Parisian-style Café Des Beaux-Arts, or Melvyn’s Restaurant at Ingleside Inn, where Frank Sinatra ate. Palm Springs boasts a long list of hiking trails to explore, each leading to hidden natural treasures. Obviously, in summer it’s best to go early in the day or later
Non-hikers who still like to see the sights have options: Big Wheel Tours and Desert Adventures Red Jeep Tours. There are also architecture and design tours. Palm Springs Mod Squad offers tours with names like the Martini and Mid Century Architecture Tour, which shows you the homes of stars like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Marilyn Monroe. Known for its arts scene, Palm Springs is home to several art museums including the Palm Springs Art Museum and the Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture + Design Center. You can even book a flight in a vintage Warbird C-47 Skytrain or P-51D Mustang at the Palm Springs Air Museum. Into murals? Take the self-guided walking tour of Coachella Walls, which the California Desert Arts Council describes as “big colorful paintings celebrating the life and struggles of the local population, which includes a large number of immigrant farmworkers.” (Continued on page 34)

Weekend Getaway Palm Springs
(Continued from page 32)
Ascend 2.5 miles on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, explore the desert with a Red Jeep Tour or just relax under a picturesque sunset For pint-sized thrill-seekers (and their parents), there’s splashy fun at the Wet ’n’ Wild water park, while more mature players can slip into the Spa Resort Casino or Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa for slots and table games 24/7.
and Donn Beach 1934 Zombie. There’s also clever tributes, like (Straw)Barry White. Creative snacks include Sriracha coconut popcorn and sea salt vinegar almonds. True cocktail enthusiasts can sign up for a tiki cocktail class on July 8.
In a town with daytime temperatures that can break 110, when the sun goes down the people come out. The cocktail menu at Bootlegger Tiki reads like a page ripped out of Mad Libs: Hold Tongue Say Apple, Mind Flayer
Truss & Twine has been known to have luau nights, where you’ll feast on a whole Caja China-roasted suckling pig, a glass of punch and two Tiki Cocktails for $75. Got a sweet tooth? Great Shakes have cracked the code for the “world’s
greatest” gourmet shakes, malts and floats. Their premium ice cream is made at a local dairy, and they make their caramel, fudge and butterscotch sauces, whipped cream, marshmallows, graham crust and the mini doughnut that rests on top of each shake. Palm Springs in the summer is hot, yes, but the heat is dry, the pools are plentiful, and the sky is full of stars at night. Find more ideas at visitgreaterpalmsprings.com.
