Go for an Early Morning or Late Night Run Start your weekend off right with a quick run or leisurely stroll along the iconic Santa Monica Pier and beach. Race at your own pace and choose your distance (2-mile and 5-mile courses). And then, cool-off and grab your mat for a 9 a.m. group yoga class; take in the sound of waves crashing on the beach and enter a peaceful meditative state. ROGA (run + yoga) is free, just be sure to sign up! If you prefer evening runs, join the Los Angeles Midnight Runners on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. Sign up before events reach capacity.

Throw a Beach Bonfire Party Dockweiler State Beach has one thing no other Los Angelesarea beach can offer: bonfire pits. Load up some firewood and bring family and friends out for an afternoon in the sun followed by a cozy campfire under the stars. Pro tip: Bonfire pits cannot be reserved and are available on a firstcome, first-served basis. Arrive early during busy summer weekends, as there are only about 40 of them to go around.

The Ultimate Hang-Out Boat!

W

ith the Marina situated so close to the Pacific Ocean, most of the boats we see around here are the ones that can handle, at least on some level, ocean conditions. There are electric Duffy boats coming out of Marina del Rey boat rentals, and a few other exceptions to the rule but that’s mostly what we have. But lately, you may have seen another kind of boat that isn’t usually in this neck of the woods, they’re often in flat water habitats like lakes and bays where white caps are a rarity. We’re talking about pontoon boats. These vessels are sort of like a comfortable outdoor deck, with comfy seating and some nice accoutrements placed on some of the boats that make the ride very stable and pleasant. They’re popular in these flat water environments because they are perfect for bringing a bunch of people out for a day of cruising around and chilling out in a mellow setting. Most people who enjoy pontoon boats aren’t thinking,

www.Yachts4Fun.com

“Let me see what this thing can do!” It’s more like, “Where are the drink holders and is there a remote for that stereo?” Recently, Yachts 4 Fun in Marina del Rey added a couple of pontoon boats to their rental fleet and as they pass by, it’s hard to deny their inviting quality. If you’re the kind of person who likes to hang out with a bunch of friends and tool around the Marina under the shade of a Bimini with a cool beverage in your hand, consider a pontoon. For this specific purpose, they’re hard to beat. They are not burdened by the qualities (and compromises) a normal boat must have to be ocean-going. Instead they are laid out to hang out. They’re simple and userfriendly for families with little kids and/ or dogs, they have lots of storage and they’re super safe. All that said, Richard Waite who owns Yachts 4 Fun said he was pleasantly surprised at how seaworthy they were. Like many people, Waite had preconceived notions about pontoon boats and was

surprised at how able they actually are. “A fish out of water was my first impression after first sighting pontoons in the ocean”, said Waite. “Then curiosity lead me to research that showed that pontoons with triple tube designs and larger horsepower motors can handle ocean conditions”. Waite now has two Manitou pontoon boats in his fleet – one is 25-feet with a Suzuki 350 hp, (which is ample power!) and another version that’s 23-feet with 250 hp. They can accommodate up to 12 passengers. “This year our plan was to add new boats to our rental fleet at Windward Yacht Center, so I looked for the best luxury pontoon boats on the market and was impressed with Manitou’s V-Toon design that performs like any V-bottom fiberglass boat”, says Waite. “I thought, if we are going to be the first to have pontoons in the Marina, it has to be done right with stable platforms and plenty of power for ocean conditions”.

Paddleboard, Kayak or Row in the Marina Try your hand at water sports without going far. Palawan Way’s Paddle Method is an accredited stand-up paddleboarding school perfect for first-timers. You can also learn how to glide through the generally calm waters of Mother’s Beach with Admiralty Way’s Pro SUP Shop or Marina del Rey Boat Rentals. The UCLA Marina Aquatic Center (MAC) on Fiji Way also offers a host of fun recreational water sport classes.

Hike Will Rogers State Historic Park One of the more breathtaking hikes in Greater Los Angeles has to be the Inspiration Loop Trail spanning from the historic Will Rogers estate to Inspiration Point above Pacific Palisades. This dog-friendly and relatively easy 2.25-mile trail offers views of the city on one side and the Pacific on the other. A $12 parking fee supports maintenance of the park, and with the Will Rogers Polo Club adjacent to the parking lot you might be able to catch a match for free.

(But sign up soon!) The Fairwind Yacht Club, a sailing nonprofit club, offers access to many sailboats, so you can steer clear of the costs of boat ownership. Bluewater Sailing offers top-notch private lessons. And if you’re single, the Single Mariners of Marina del Rey match boat owners with would-be sailors during low-key social outings.
