RAIN GARDENS ARE IN:
Do they really filter stormwater run off? What does it take to get started? Lots of planning........
A rain garden is typically a shallow depression, filled with sandy soil, topped with mulch, which will collect and naturally filter rainwater run off; filtering out pollutants before they make their way to a water source; in our case the San Juan Channel. Before we started the rain garden we spent a year observing the runoff flow. We noted which patches of grass first turned vibrant green in the spring... indicating the runoff path from higher ground and raingutters. After scooping out the basic depression we tested the rate of draining/soaking: (really fast!). Later we timed the rain garden as it drained to empty in less than 4 hours; this was after filling to the top during a 1" in 45 minutes rainfall event. W hen working with Ron and his equipment to dig the depression for the rain garden, I suggested; per the instructions, to add a load of sand... he looked at me and said "it's all sand and gravel here already!". So we added the soil and mulch layers and got ready to start planting.
So what have we learned from our rain garden? 1. Our rate of percolation (draining) is terrific! The manuals say water should drain in less than 24 hours; our rain garden drains in less than 4! 2. The position of our run off/overflow pipes are perfectly situated in height (not by accident). The higest water level in the rain garden has always been lower than the pipes. 3. It's been <18> months since we started the planting process, and we are already doing less watering, in spite of the dry year. Year 3 will be no watering! 4. The plants were all recommended choices for rain gardens. Only one so far has failed, because it was not native to our region. 5. The reseach and planning before we started has really paid off. We've done almost no maintenance since early spring. 6. Making it a landscaping feature has so far created lots of interest in rain gardens, even though most people are not looking to design and build something on this scale. 7. The end result is efficient stormwater managment, and a valuable landscaping asset, giving us viewing enjoyment all year long.
