Week 2 – Studio Journal

The second week's tutorial focused on using 40 strips of battens to fabricate a structure that as high as possible. In the beginning, my group got the idea that to build a triangle base and then stuck four long strips of battens together on the three peak points of triangle base and the top will be triangle as well.

As we have made a draft model of the first idea, we found that it's not stable enough, thus we tried to make a further modification on the structure.

Then our group tried to stabilize the base first. So we cut the battens make a smaller triangle and stick it a bit higher than the triangle base in order to increase the weight of the base. In addition, in the middle position, we stick the three long battens together to make to whole structure more stable.

However, due to the problem of tape, the whole structure seemed easily to fall down, then we made other three battens (stick 2 strips of battens together) and stuck them on the long battens to sustain the weight. Then this was the final structure of our group.

But actually, our group's architecture was not stable enough because after tutor had put the glasses case on the structure it was broken!!

But in my own opinion, that's not due to the reason that our structure is unstable enough, that's because of our weak handmade skills. Thus, I just felt that's why construction and design are always together.

Furthermore, I find that structure is always associated with triangle because it provides a good stability for architectures.
