The illustration demonstrates the concept of a regulatory system, capable of mitigating the damage caused by overfishing (waste products) in the coastal area, which results in the erosion of the shoreline over time. The fishing industry’s waste has a negative impact on the surrounding neighbourhoods. As with Superscape’s “Retreating Village,” we are looking to propose and design a modular and systematic housing scheme that makes use of prefabricated construction methods that are easily assembled and repurposed to meet the needs of the users may be the ultimate solution to the problem. The shortage of sea products can also be addressed through the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) from The North Sea Policy Exchange, the introduction of systematic vertical fish farming in the area, which reduces the amount of sea surface used in the coastal area for fishing industry, and the waste product produced by aquaculture. The shortage of sea products can also be addressed through controlled fishing and proper fish farming for later consumption by locals, while also providing job opportunities for both construction and fishery sectors.

Infraspace is a sub-discipline of infrastructure architecture that aims to link systems in a constructed form to improve efficiency. We created a housing idea based on historical contexts concerning networks and flows, with the goal of being informed by the infrastructure already in place at Grimsby and the North Sea, as well as how these networks and flows have impacted the area. We examined the area not only in terms of its physical appearance, but also in terms of its increasingly virtual and digital nature. With this in mind, our study examines the connection between temporary inhabitants and the scheme, with the goal of providing them with socially productive space that is beneficial to both parties. This would be beneficial to the entire community.

The Project Brief
The North Sea Transition Deal includes the following key commitments:

The temporal nature of flows of people, services and materials in this area should influence our designs to question: what constitutes temporary’ in relation to housing policy?
To reduce carbon emissions, the government and the oil and gas sector have agreed to invest up to £16 billion by 2030. This includes up to £3 billion for renewable energy to displace fossil fuel-based power on oil and gas platforms, up to £3 billion for carbon capture and sequestration, and up to £10 billion for hydrogen production. By 2030, the industry will voluntarily commit to ensure that local enterprises contribute 50% of offshore decommissioning and new energy technology projects, helping to keep jobs in the UK. The appointment of an Industry Supply Chain Champion who will help coordinate local growth and job possibilities with other industries like carbon capture, storage, and storage, as well as offshore wind.

What services and social, cultural and spatial amenities are needed for a transient off-shore labour force in and around the North Sea coast?; How does our building respond to these needs? The North Sea Policy Offshore Renewable Energy Industry Outlook 2030 and Beyond by European Union The North Sea’s offshore energy industry is continually expanding, with new technological developments allowing for larger wind farms to be built further offshore, with larger and more powerful turbines than present models. Other novel energy technologies are being introduced, such as floating wind, hybrid platforms, tidal energy la goons, and energy storage (see Section 3.3 for a more information of offshore energy industry trends). These improvements are pushing for the achievement of established energy goals in order to address challenges such as energy demand and security, as well as CO2 emissions and climate change. The report, from London-based non-profit Carbon Tracker, reveals that solar and wind have the potential to produce thousands of petawatt hours (PWh) of electricity a year, while the world’s current electricity demand stands at just 27 PWh. Furthermore, Carbon Tracker shows, if humans chose to get all their energy from solar power alone, the land required would take up just 450,000 km2—just 0.3% of the world’s total land area, and less than the space currently taken up by fossil fuel industry operations.

The price of crude oil is steadily falling, resulting in the abandonment of oil rigs in the UK, as well as many other countries. Dismantling the equipment will be the only option rather than left it rusting. The gigantic rigs, each weighing over a thousand tonnes, are dragged in from the North Sea into the Cromarty Firth. They will pile up and rot here until the economy favours crude oil once more. Many Scots, particularly those who live in places where the drilling industry thrives, hope for this.

Proposal of Construction Methods De-construct & Re-Construct
Recycle any steel structural components from abandoned oil rigs stations, such as columns, beams, and trusses, to create the foundation of the dwelling design, as steel can be recycled endlessly. Only the steel structures will be recovered from the complete structure, and the pillars will be left in the ocean as a refuge for coral reefs (BBC 2021). It will keep the appeal and spirit of a working rig while the units/living quarters are made more pleasant and the community acclaimed, making it a potentially unique Transient Housing Scheme and the only one of its kind in the world.

Seaventures Dive Rig Resort is built on an oil rig and maintains a profile of its former self but otherwise serves as a PADI five-star IDC Dive Resort with plenty of amenities and a location to dive for—in the heart of the Coral Triangle. Can be accessed by helicopter or boat, has 25 rooms (four-berth dorms, or standard twin and double rooms) and offers a movie room, a karaoke lounge and bar, pool tables, table tennis, souvenir shop, and a conference room.
During the 16th century and 17th century Grimsby continued to decline and the population fell. Grimsby dwindled to being little more than a large village with a market. However, imports of coal grew steadily more important. Grain from the surrounding countryside was exported from Grimsby. In 1556 the wooden bridge over the Haven was replaced with a stone one. Like all Tudor towns, Grimsby suffered from outbreaks of the plague. There was a severe outbreak in 1590/91.

There is, however, precedent for regaining control, and it is crucial to Grimsby’s collapse. From the 1950s to the 1970s, the so-called «cod wars,» a series of fishing disputes, resulted in a 200-mile exclusion zone surrounding Iceland. This was before European quotas were implemented, which hit owners of vessels designed for the shallow waters of the North Sea hard.

The village of Grimsby grew into a port because it stands on a river called the Haven, which flowed into the Humber. Furthermore, there were rich fishing grounds in the North Sea and The Humber was full of fish. The old Danish word for village was ‘by’ and this one was probably Grim’s by or Grimmr’s by (by meant village). Grimsby was bound to become a fishing port. By the time of the Domesday Book (1086), Grimsby had a population of over 200.

Glorious of Grimsby Port Industry/ Ethics
Ports and logistics, food processing, particularly frozen foods and fish processing, chemicals and process industries, and digital media are the core sectors of the Grimsby economy. Cleethorpes has a tourism industry to the east, and there has been large-scale industrial activity along the Humber bank to Immingham since the 1950s, focusing on chemicals and, since the 1990s, gas-powered electricity generation.

Glorious Port of Grimsby Since the Middle Ages, the Port of Grimsby has been in use. In the 1790s, the Grimsby Haven Company con structed the first enclosed dock, afterwards known as the Old Dock. The railways and the construction of the Royal Dock in Grimsby in the 1840s ushered in a period of considerable expansion. In 1857, a Fish Dock was built, and during the next 80 years, the fish docks grew. In the 1880s, Alexandra Dock was built on top of the Old Dock. Between the Royal Dock and the Fish Dock, the Kasbah is a historic district with a network of streets that is still home to numerous artisan fish-processing shops. In the second half of the twentieth century, fishing activity were decreased to a fraction of their previous levels. The modern port has become a hub for vehicle imports and exports, as well as general cargo since 1975. It grew into a wind-farm maintenance base in the early twenty-first century.
The cod wars were a series of disputes between Britain and Iceland over fishing rights in Icelandic seas that lasted from the 1950s through the 1970s. The pinnacle of the Cod Wars saw thirty-seven Royal Navy warships mobilised to protect British trawlers fishing in the disputed zone, despite the fact that it was never a war in the traditional sense (the vast and well-equipped Royal Navy would have easily crushed the tiny Icelandic Navy). While the wars were eventually ended through diplomatic methods, there was some at-sea conflict between British and Icelandic ships. The Cod Wars demonstrated how seriously nations considered their fishing rights, as well as the extent to which they would go to get access to lucrative fishing grounds.

Strategies/ Spatialised [Macro Scale] Approaches
Connecting the Green Nodes in the Grimsby area and constructing a green corridor along the path to the site, as well as improving green and public facilities, particularly for pedes trians, cyclists, and Grimsby residents. The newly developed ARUP Green Zones and revitalised River Freshney will be the possible view for the housing
4 Public Transport-Centric The railway line accross the Grimsby will be a plus point for the transient housing scheme, promoting people to use public transportation and reducing the carbon emission in the UK
2 Circulation Around Grimsby Plot is approachable from any direction. Access from the north road connecting the port is especially helpful for the off-shore workers that will reside here. Instead of only being a roadway, the bridge would have a public platform for gatherings. Windows that may be tilted to guide views in a more desirable direction.
5 River of Life Water and Grimsby cannot be separated because the historical pillar began with the sea and river, which have been the source of economic for the townspeople till today. The “River of Life” concept might be implemented while improving the beauty of the canals and rivers around town, as well as using them as attraction spots and water sports.
3 Blurring the Grimsby Boudaries The residential zones on the west and north sides of the property intersect with the business and infrastructure zones on the other sides of the site. The difference between two distinct zones can provide a “bridge” opportunity for blurring boundaries while embracing the ARUP 2030 Masterplan.

Blurring Boundaries referring to the action of conceal the borderlines in between two or more spaces to create sense of connectivity and continuation rather than seggregating them, in micro or macro scale in architecture and urban. Blurring your role boundaries implies both stepping out of the boundary and allowing others to step into it. The blurring indicates that the boundary is no longer a sharp dividing line, but rather a porous broad patch. Blurring can serve as a reasonable balance between two extremes: everything defined and nothing de fined.

Boundaries exist to be blurred. Even if you jump a boundary, you are still confined by the new boundary you have just entered. In an era that still praises clarity and definition, ‘Blurring Boundaries’ strives for ‘unsharpness’ and ambiguity, a return to perception and experience. A strategy that does not produce autonomous objects, but instead, blurs the boundaries between a building and its context. The blurring or obscuring of boundaries is a method that has been used for centuries to create ambiguity in art.

It will not only benefit those in the immediate vi cinity, but it will also serve as a new attraction and connector for them, as well as a new beacon of the city.

Grimsby residents also have a vital role in the creation and success of the social active space. The engagement of loclas demonstrated that the scheme is beneficial to Grimsby and strengthens the community’s basic cultural value.

The exisiting building on the site is AJ Auto Garage will be dismantled and moved somewhere else. New massing of the residential blocks will be extruded from the ground level.
The blocks of the residential is now erected and sandwiched in between to historical buildings
Circulation was introduced into the residential blocks forming a path vertically from low levels to the up top levels of the massing blocks.
The proposed circulation path was offseted out of the building footprint to maximise and make the floor plate more efficient in term of spatial.
Later all the blocks were lifted to make sure there is a clear circulation, permeability and transparency for public and for the residents.

Arriving To The Site Via Frederick Ward Way New Beacon of Grimsby A structure that has been legally protected from change and destruction because of its historical, architectural, or cultural significance. Although landmark preservation laws differ by city and state, they always serve the same basic goal: to maintain historic sites as close to their original state as feasible.
In honour of Grimsby’s illustrious port and docks, it’s a lovely public space and cultural centre.
The building becoming the public realm for the locals, allowing us to travel from the mall to the park.
The infrastructure arounf it also improved and much more lively and still there’s much of its history.

Arriving To The Site Via Freshney Rv
River of Life River cleaning will be carried out by applying a chemical treatment to the algae that is obstructing sunlight from reaching the river’s bottom. The river’s general appearance will be upgraded so that people may interact with the water body that has been important to Grimsby Town for decades and is now serving as a new water route from the sea to the city centre.
The Haven Mill Facade is preserved and the identity is preserved and maintained.

Respecting the Site
To achieve a seamless transition between the two developments, the ARUP Masterplan for residential and park will be incorporated into the design. All of the initiatives will be combined and collaborate to make Grimsby a healthier city.
Residential Zone The area to the north west is densely populated, thus it will be acceptable to construct a housing scheme on the land.
Youth Centre A newly designated Youth Centre will be constructed on the existing property. Possibilities for connecting and integrating programmes with the housing concept. Programs centred on culature and history will be proposed.

The Fish Heritage Centre is a historically significant landmark in Grimsby that will be linked to and incorporated with the CO-Rig+ programme to ensure that the cultural identity of the city is preserved and enhanced.

The location where they can interact and profit from one another. The fish market/processing zone is quickly becoming Grimsby’s new main attraction for locals and visitors alike.
Bringing Grimsby’s magnificent Fisheries Industry back to life by establishing a new centralised fish market for the locals and increasing the local economy’s producing potential. The public is welcome to visit the market level, and there is also an open exhibition where visitors may learn about the reality of offshore workers and the history of the industry in Grimsby. The tenants and the community can have a symbiotic relationship in the social permeability space, resulting in a healthy and socially inclined zone. The CO-Rig+ building also acts as a “bridge” or “realm” for individuals moving from the residential zone in the North West to the business zone in the South East.

The Alternate Floor The cod wars were a series of disputes between Britain and Iceland over fishing rights in Icelandic seas that lasted from the 1950s through the 1970s. The pinnacle of the Cod Wars saw thirty-seven Royal Navy warships mobilised to protect British trawlers fishing in the disputed zone, despite the fact that it was never a war in the traditional sense (the vast and well-equipped Royal Navy would have easily crushed the tiny Icelandic Navy). While the wars were eventually ended through diplomatic methods, there was some at-sea conflict between British and Icelandic ships. The Cod Wars demonstrated how seriously nations considered their fishing rights, as well as the extent to which they would go to get access to lucrative fishing grounds.

To reduce heat loss, all of the spaces were originally arranged so that the main spaces would be at the centre core of the tower. Project Conclusion In the context of Grimsby, PS1 posed the problem of merging housing developments with a local context. The site’s location was quite complicated, tight, limited and contraint and there were a lot of interesting relationships between the many types of people who moved around and lived in the neighbourhood so close to the ports. The reading list is extremely effective in bringing the data and research together to form a compelling narrative and plot for the project. The North Sea Policy aids me in developing a solid conceptual foundation for my use of oil rig structures and the incorporation of a fish products facility into the structure. The planning project was an excellent approach to bring together a large amount of research to support the site’s core issues and how each pair could potentially address them. The enormous amount of waste produced by both the docks and the material scooped out to develop them was one of our primary findings from the planning studies.

My Self-Reflection Overall, I am delighted with the outcome of the project. I believe the design meets the brief effectively. The oil rigs’ framework has a massive quality to it, and I appreciate how the structures offer intrigue and continuity throughout the building. The building’s narrative was well-thought out; the idea of sustainability, community engagement, and temporary housing informed every architectural decision and gave the structure meaning. If time had permitted, I would have liked to explore three main aspects further: 1. Exploration of space;

I would have experimented with oil rig buildings on a larger scale. More experimentation with the water tank pods to produce a more unconventional type of space and form. 2.
