Timeline of Svp Stadium Modernism in Ahmedabad Modernism in architecture emerged in Ahmedabad during the postindependence period in India.
Le Corbusier's Influence Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier, one of the pioneers of modern architecture, played a significant role in shaping the architectural landscape of Ahmedabad. He was commissioned to design several buildings in the city, including the renowned Mill Owner's Association Building (Ahmedabad Textile Industry's Research Association or ATIRA Building). His work had a profound influence on local architects.
Ahmedabad's Industrial Growth The city experienced substantial industrial growth during the mid-20th
century, which led to an increased demand for contemporary and functional architectural designs. Modernist principles were well-suited to this changing urban landscape.
Local Architects Local architects in Ahmedabad, like B.V. Doshi, Charles Correa, and Louis
Kahn, embraced modernism and adapted it to suit the local climate and culture. Doshi, in particular, trained with Le Corbusier and played a pivotal role in promoting modernist architecture in Ahmedabad and across India.

PROGRAM | Public wellness and recreational centre The strategic selection of repurposing the Sardar Patel Stadium into a public wellness and recreational center stems from its exceptional city-center location. This transformation retains the site's historical and cultural significance while strategically utilizing existing infrastructure. It aligns with the community's needs, fosters urban revitalization, and symbolizes the city's commitment to health and community engagement. By choosing a program closely related to the stadium's original purpose, this adaptive reuse honors its legacy while contributing positively to the city's identity and well-being.
Design Premises for the Adaptive Reuse of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium into a Public Wellness Center 1.Versatile Event Space Preservation : The existing ground, known for its historical significance as a venue for large concerts, cultural functions, public gatherings, and intercollege and school cricket matches, possesses immense potential for continuing its role as a versatile event space. 2.Capacity for 50,000 Spectators: The stadium's arena boasts a seating capacity of 50,000 spectators, ensuring it remains well-equipped to host diverse activities, emphasizing inclusivity and community engagement. 3.Utilizing Underutilized Sectional Volume : The underutilised sectional volume beneath the arena has lain dormant recently. However, it possesses significant potential for transformation into a vibrant civic space dedicated to public wellness, and promoting physical and mental health. 4.Creating an Accessible Civic Space : The western part of the stadium, connecting to the city roads, and the North side of the North wing holds substantial promise as a plural public space. This space can be thoughtfully designed to accommodate a variety of activities throughout the day and evening, catering to people of all age groups, thereby addressing the needs and interests of a diverse range of individuals.
