2016 ARIZONA FOOTBALL

HOME SCHEDULE

SEPT. 3, 7:30 p.m. (SATURDAY—Glendale, Arizona) Why you should watch:

VS

Though it’s technically not a home game, this matchup against the Cougars will take place in Glendale, Arizona. Led by fifth-year senior Taysom Hill at quarterback, the Cougars are coming off a 9-4 record that ended with a loss to in-state rival Utah in the Las Vegas Bowl. While Hill is experienced, he has never consistently wowed as the starter in his past four years, but he is still an effective dual-threat quarterback. Playing at University of Phoenix Stadium is an event in itself. This is just the first time since 1965 that Arizona has played a regular season game in the valley against an opponent not named ASU.

SEPT. 10, 7:45 p.m. (SATURDAY) Why you should watch:

VS

Grambling State opens the season on the road and will look for the upset when the Tigers travel to Tucson on Sept. 10. Grambling State is coming off a 9-3 record, including a perfect 9-0 in conference play. This FCS team should not be taken lightly. Head coach and former Grambling State running back Broderick Fobbs has gone 16-7 in his two season at the helm of his alma mater. If you don’t know about Grambling State’s band, well, you better get ready, because it is famous as one of the more creative and fun marching bands in the country. The Tiger Marching Band will perform at halftime.

SEPT. 17, 7:45 p.m. (SATURDAY) Why you should watch:

VS

Hawaii opened the season last Friday with a 51-31 loss to the California Golden Bears in Sydney, Australia. Just like the Cal game, this contest promises to be a shootout; Hawaii gained 482 yards against the Cal defense, but was done in by turnovers. Hawaii has had a reputation for being a pass-happy offense, but they ran 38 times for 248 yards and three touchdowns against the Golden Bears. If Arizona cannot stop the run, the middle of the field could be wide open on play-action passes. Sadly, this may be one of Hawaii’s last seasons competing in college football, as budget cuts and financial uncertainty are threatening to cancel the program.

SEPT. 24, TBD (SATURDAY) Why you should watch:

VS

Last year’s trip to the Pacific Northwest ended with a 49-3 thrashing that included a four-touchdown game by returning quarterback Jake Browning. The Wildcats also gave up over 200 yards on the ground agaisnt Washington. This game should not be as bad as last year’s, but Washington is still the likely favorite due to stability at the quarterback spot and returning running back Myles Gaskin. Browning will do his best to repeat last year’s performance, but can the ‘Cats learn from last year and stop him?

OCT. 15, TBD (SATURDAY) Why you should watch:

VS

While Arizona will likely be the underdog this game, the Wildcats’ last few games against the Trojans have been close. They lost 28-26 in 2014 and 38-30 in 2015, so they have no reason to fear the Trojans this year. All eyes will be on the offense, as they have senior star receiver Juju SmithSchuster to headline what should be a strong passing game under interim-turned-head-coach Clay Helton. Smith had 89 catches for 1,454 yards and 10 touchdowns last year, so Arizona’s defensive backs must account for him at all times. Defensive back and receiver Adoree’ Jackson is one of the more dynamic athletes in the country in more than just football, falling short of qualifying for the Rio Olympics in the long jump.

OCT. 29, TBD (SATURDAY) Why you should watch:

VS

This will be Arizona’s biggest home test of the season as superstar Christian McCaffrey leads the Cardinal into this matchup. Stanford ran for a staggering 314 yards in a 55-17 win last year, and they will lead the running game again this season. Kevin Hogan graduated last spring, but a steady dose of runs on first and second down will help quarterback Ryan Burns run the offense efficiently. McCaffrey is quite possibly the best player in the country. Even if Arizona was without a win to this point, he would still be a reason to sell out Arizona Stadium.

NOV. 12, TBD (SATURDAY) Why you should watch:

VS

Coach Mike MacIntyre has led the Buffaloes to three straight last-place finishes in the Pac-12 South. Last year, he guaranteed a win over Arizona for Colorado’s homecoming, despite being in the cellar. Believe it or not, that did not happen. The Buffaloes’ offense is led by senior quarterback Sefo Liufau who had over 2,400 yards and nine touchdowns last season. If the ‘Cats show up, that won’t matter. If not, this could be quite the ugly game.

NOV. 25, 7:30 p.m. (FRIDAY) Why you should watch:

VS

Last year’s loss to the Sun Devils made ASU bowl-eligible, so Arizona will be looking for revenge. Most of an offensive line that gave up 39 sacks is being replaced, along with any quarterback with experience, so ASU might be in rebuilding mode. Redshirt senior slot receiver Tim White is the team’s leading receiver, so whomever is behind center will mostly likely be throwing the ball to his side of the field quite a bit. This game could once again determine a bowl berth. ASU is projected to be worse than Arizona, but it’s really a toss-up at this point.

Senior spotlight: ‘Cats prepare for final season Some of the Wildcats’ star players look to complete their time at the UA on top with strong final-year performances

BY RYAN KELAPIRE @RKelapireUA

Paul Magloire Jr., linebacker

Tellas Jones, safety Jones is expected to be a leader in the Wildcats’ secondary this season. Jones, who plays the “spur” position in Yate’s defense, started 11 games in 2015 and was fifth on the team in tackles (55), tied for third in tackles for loss (7.0) and tied for second in sacks (3.0). Losing fellow safety Will Parks to the NFL means Jones will have to take on a larger role in 2016 and head coach Rich Rodriguez believes Jones is more than capable of doing so once he—and the rest of the defense—gets accustomed to the new defensive schemes. “He’s an explosive player,” Rodriguez said. “He’s a guy that could lead us or be one of the leaders in tackles. He’s got a lot to learn because it’s all new to him, but he’s a competitive guy.” There will undoubtedly be a learning curve, but Jones thinks the new defensive scheme will make him more of an impact player in 2016. “The scheme is fun,” Jones said. “It allows you to do different things and puts you in position to make plays, so that’s what I like about it. My position will be to cover more and be more in the box. It gives DBs a lot more opportunity to make plays.”

The Wildcats’ linebacker corps—including star linebacker Scooby Wright III—was ravaged by injury in 2015. The situation became so dire that Rodriguez occasionally had to play walk-ons for major stretches at a time. In desperation, the coaching staff moved Magloire, a former safety, to linebacker and it turned out to be a wise move. Magloire finished second on the team in tackles (72)—the highest among all returning players—and had four tackles for loss along with a forced fumble. Magloire’s defensive back-like athleticism along with a 227-pound frame gives him a unique blend of size and speed at the linebacker position. National analysts were so impressed by Magloire’s transition that he was named to the Bednarik Award preseason watch list—an award given to the best defensive player in college football—prior to the upcoming season. Magloire is widely believed to be Arizona’s best defensive player, and he’s expected to be the anchor of new defensive coordinator Marcel Yates’ defense.

Griffey, Grant, Phillips, receivers We still don’t know who Arizona’s starting quarterback will be for the season opener, but we do know who the targets will be. The Wildcats have one of—if not—the most experienced receiving corps in the Pac-12. Cayleb Jones and David Richards graduated from the 2015 squad, but Trey Griffey, Samajie Grant and Nate Phillips all return for 2016. All three have been contributors for Arizona since their freshman years, combining for 3,768 receiving yards and 26 touchdowns since they arrived in Tucson. Phillips and Grant, both standing under 6-feet tall, are quick and shifty receivers while Griffey is a bigger, possession receiver, standing at 6-foot-3. The trio is a solid fit for Arizona’s quick hitting offense that often emphasizes short routes and yards after the catch. Grant is often regarded by Arizona defensive backs as the toughest player to cover and tackle in the open field because of his ability to create separation and make defenders miss. Of the three receivers, Phillips had the most receiving yards last year (564), though Griffey and Grant did miss a few games due to injury. The biggest knock on this receiving group is its consistency. Last season, the inconsistency was a product of shaky quarterback play and injuries. Griffey missed seven games while Grant missed three, and the Wildcats shuffled between three different quarterbacks.

DaVonte’ Neal, cornerback Like Magloire, Neal also changed positions at one point, and the results have been positive. The 5-foot-10 cornerback transferred to Arizona from Notre Dame in 2013, redshirted that season, then played as a wide receiver in the 2014 season. With the Wildcats being thin at cornerback while having a logjam at wide receiver, Neal flipped to defense prior to the 2015 season. He started in 11 of 13 games in 2015, and improved as the season went on, finishing third on the team in tackles (63) and tied for second in pass breakups (11). Considering the 2016 season will be Neal’s second season back at cornerback, he’s expected to take another step forward. The secondary’s former leader, Will Parks, graduated and Neal could be the one to fill that void.

Injuries ripped up the Wildcats’ linebacking core last year, and they return some pieces this year that will help solidify the front six. Cody Ippolito sat out all of 2015 after suffering a torn ACL. Ippolito played in most of the snaps in 2014, and will bring stability to the group. ‘Cats replace departed stars

Arizona football kicks off the 201617 season with questions on how the program will adjust to some key losses from 2016 and how the returning starters will help shape the future. The Wildcats will have a new-look defense under first year Defensive Coordinator Marcel Yates, who replaced Jeff Casteel, and could look different on the offensive side of the ball as well. The major offensive additions will be the switch from defense to offense for junior Cam Denson and the quick shifty

moves of true freshman J.J. Taylor. The ‘Cats could also see some contribution from Shawn Poindexter, a junior transfer from Glendale Community College who stands at 6’5” and is by far the ‘Cats tallest receiver. The receiving core was hurt by the departures of Cayleb Jones and David Richards, who were the top two targets for the Wildcats last year and who brought size on the outside. Despite the loss, the offense will once again be the backbone for the Wildcats under Head Coach Rich Rodriguez. Defensively, the most notable loss is All-American linebacker Scooby

recruiting trail. The defensive line, perhaps the Wildcat’s weakest position group, took a hit with the loss of Reggie Gilbert who is currently fighting for a roster spot with the Green Bay Packers. One way to help the defense could be within the new schemes being implemented Yates. Schemes, however, can only do so much, and ultimately, the talent has to be there. With their new high-tempo look on defense and the return of an offense that can always put points on the board, there’s plenty of reasons for optimism for Arizona football this season.

This season’s Pac-12 storylines NORTH

BY IVAN LEONARD @Ivan14bro

CALIFORNIA

The Bears are losing quarterback Jared Goff and their top six receivers so their offense may struggle this year. Their defense also has question marks so this year might be similar to the end of last year.

STANFORD

If the Pac-12 cannot contain running back Christian McCaffrey again this season, Stanford might literally run away with the conference. In last year’s 10 conference games, he carried the ball 260 times for 1629 yards and helped the Cardinal go 9-1 in conference play.

OREGON

The Ducks running game will lead this team. They have led the Pac-12 Conference in rushing for many years and that should not change with the return of running back Royce Freeman. The Ducks beat Stanford and USC last season so they know they can take on the other conference powers regardless of the quarterback.

WASHINGTON

ESPN has given them a 49 percent chance to win the division so there are gigantic expectations for the Huskies this year. They only play three ranked teams this season so 10 wins should be very manageable this year.

OREGON STATE

The Beavers have been abysmal these past few seasons and it might stay that way.

WASHINGTON STATE

The Cougars are a solid dark horse candidate to win the Pac-12, if you are going against the grain. If Luke Falk had thrown for 4,561 yards and 38 touchdowns to only 8 picks at an L.A. school, he would be receiving much more preseason buzz. The Huskies are losing their top receivers but Falk should be able to compensate for that this season.

SOUTH UTAH

Despite sharing a division with USC and UCLA, the Utes have quietly won the most games in the division over the past two years. Player turnover may, however, be their downfall. They lost running back Devontae Booker, their starting quarterback and top three receivers to the NFL, so this year may be rough.

UCLA

The Bruins only have ranked matchups against Stanford and USC so their schedule is much more manageable than USC. They also get USC at the Rose Bowl this season so they have the schedule to succeed. Josh Rosen could be a player of the year contender if he takes advantage of this schedule and puts another good season together.

ARIZONA Scooby Wright III is gone, but running back Nick Wilson and quarterback Anu Solomon are still in the fold for the Wildcats. If they can avoid the injury bug, they could put up points in bunches for Arizona. The only problem is: Will the defense make enough stops for them to win enough games to contend?

COLORADO

After three straight last place finishes in the division, the Buffaloes have nowhere to go but up this season. Head Coach Mike McIntyre is 10-27 over the last three seasons so there is a good chance he may be fired sometime this season. He might have to make a bowl game but who in the conference are they beating?

ARIZONA STATE

The Sun Devils might be in rebuilding mode this season after losing quarterback Mike Bercovici and others to graduation. Many had them as a dark horse Pac-12 contender last season, but those plans fell flat. They gave up 39 sacks last year and lost most of their line so they might not have time to go deep down the field.

USC

Will this year be the year USC puts it all together and wins the Pac-12? Stanford might be their greatest competition but quarterback Max Browne has enough weapons to contend. The Trojans face a gauntlet of a schedule so UCLA might win the division this year despite possibly being their inferior.

Changes are no challenge to Magloire Senior hybrid desperate to meet preseason expectations after an offseason of constant change

BY JUSTIN SPEARS @JustinESports

Around this time last season, Arizona linebacker Paul Magloire spent the entire fall camp viewed as a junior college product and just another player on the depth chart starving for minutes. Oh how times have changed as Magloire steps into a drastically upgraded role for his last rodeo in Tucson. Magloire is unlike any UA player on the roster, because even though he consumed heavy minutes late in the 2015 season, his journey to mold into the Wildcats’ leader was an uphill battle. Formerly a JUCO product, Magloire played for one of the most prominent programs in the country at Arizona Western in Yuma, where he spent the 2014 season as a second-team AllAmerican and led the No. 5 Matadors to an 11-1 record. Magloire always reminisces on his days back in Yuma even if most people view the city as a pit stop on the way to California. He views Arizona Western as the football oasis that boosted his game both physically and mentally. The Netflix series “Last Chance U”, which traces East Mississippi Community Colleges’ historical football team and reveals the struggles of being a troubled athlete just trying to break through the division one door, is a documentary that Magloire cherishes. “It’s different, because you’re at a level where no one is really looking into it and it’s hard to get scouted from there,” Magloire said. Magloire led the Matadors defense with 101 tackles as a safety and caught the attention

TYLER BAKER/THE DAILY WILDCAT

ARIZONA SAFETY PAUL MAGLOIRE Jr. (14) drags down a Washington State running back at Arizona Stadium on Oct. 24, 2015. The Wildcats improved their secondary during Signing Day 2016.

of Wildcats Head Coach Rich Rodriguez and thenD efensive-Coordinator Jeff Casteel. For the first time in his football career, Magloire had a clean slate and a fresh start for a defense that already had starters penciled in for the 2015 season. Before the black cat riddled Arizona’s linebackers with injuries, Magloire was a bulky defensive back with an opportunity to switch to linebacker and play quality minutes for a desperate defense. Sure

enough, Magloire finished the season second on the team in tackles. “I knew once I got out there, I had to eat, try to make some plays and play so we can win some games,” Magloire said. Magloire exceeded expectations and the bar is set even higher now that he’s a veteran leader for the mysterious defense that first-year Defensive Coordinator Marcel Yates is introducing. It’s not the first time a challenging situation has presented itself to Magloire, but the

new defense has been easier to pick up than he thought. “I adjusted to it pretty fast, but I’m still picking it up and learning it day-by-day,” Magloire said. “Coach Yates did a good job coaching us up at fall camp and getting everything in so we know what we got this season … this is going to be a good year for us this year defensively and we got guys in the right spot.” Yate’s defense will contain multiple stunts and techniques so

Magloire lining up occasionally at safety will add another dimension. Usually a player that is know as a “tweener”, which is a player that doesn’t have a true position is viewed as a poisonous prospect for the NFL, but Magloire is expected to go anywhere from the fourth to the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft, according to CBS Sports. In addition to all the challenges on the field, as of May, Magloire is now a proud dad to newborn son Brayden. It

makes this season even more important because it could make such an impact for his family. Magloire has a high ceiling and the NFL is a foreseeable future, but Magloire is looking forward to update his credentials before reaching the biggest stage. “I’m happy that I’m playing in the Pac-12 and I’m excited for this season, because who knows where it’s going to go and my team is ready,” Magloire said.

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Brandon Dawkins physically looks the part of a big-time quarterback. At 6-foot-3, Dawkins stands tall in the pocket, is athletic and has an impressive arm. You may say he is a poor man’s Cam Newton ... very poor. What Dawkins lacks that Newton—NFL MVP quarterback of the Carolina Panthers—has is the cutthroat mentality that great quarterbacks have. Dawkins has been a little off in the glimpses of practice and even the annual Beanie Bowl, which was more of a walk-through than anything else. However, there is no doubt that Dawkins has more potential than any other quarterback on the roster. His gifts are undeniable, but is his mind where it needs to be? Despite early nerves against ASU last year, Dawkins completed 16-of-30 passes for 301 yards and two touchdowns, but tossed two late interceptions that proved to be the difference. He did demonstrate poise, good decision making and toughness as he ran a score in with the game out of reach. That performance alone is what fans of Dawkins are pointing to when detailing why he should be the starter. Some would even argue that Dawkins provides Arizona with a higher ceiling due to his more dynamic versatility. If this season happens to be Dawkins’ time, he had better capitalize, because this could be his last shot at the starting job.

SOLOMON Redshirt junior Anu Solomon is the clear favorite for the starting quarterback job for one reason: experience. Solomon’s game-time experience is something that cannot be simulated. He has played in several big games during his career and is primed for a break out season in his third year running the Rich Rodriguez offense. Solomon has shown issues with accuracy and consistency during his career, but do not forget that he led the Wildcats to a 10-win season, a top-10 ranking and an appearance in the VIZIO Fiesta Bowl just two seasons ago. Dawkins appears to have the athleticism required to be a successful Pac-12 Conference quarterback, but it’s hard to peg him the starter with such minimal experience. Solomon has had injury issues throughout his career, but has an experienced offensive line and a strong relationship with his three senior receivers. He is in a prime spot to return to his 2014 form. Solomon alongside junior running back Nick Wilson for the third year could prove to be the one-two-punch RichRod had at West Virginia with Pat White and Steve Slaton. Dawkins showed flashes during the ASU game, but he also made some costly mistakes. This UA team does not have the kind of depth to overcome crucial errors. The UA needs to rely on its upperclassmen for stability, making plays and leading this team through the season from beginning to end. Solomon has had plenty of big game moments and the kind of potential that could lead the UA to another Pac-12 South title.

ALEX MCINTYRE/THE DAILY WILDCAT

he untimely passing of offensive lineman Zach Hemmila hit the Arizona football team hard, and understandably so. He was beloved by all of his teammates. Stories of telling serious players to smile in practice and spending week nights battling Anu Solomon in “FIFA” soccer offer just a small glimpse of the man that was taken far too early. The product of Chandler High School here in

Arizona was a projected starter on this season’s offensive line, but more importantly, his impact among teammates was more profound. During Arizona football media day, every player and coach was asked to share a memory of Hemmila and to consider one thing they could say to him. Every last one of them said, “I love you.” Love is unconditional among family members. It doesn’t judge, it doesn’t have a preference, it is just

an emotional bond with the people you are closest with. In this case, Hemmila’s family and his brothers, now facing a football season without him, will do their very best to show their love for him everyday. Wins and losses are irrelevant this season when speaking about Hemmila; the team’s honor doesn’t come in the form of a record. Their honor, created by his passing, is to live life

understanding that nothing is guaranteed, to cherish the moments in life that bring us all together and to embrace every opportunity as though it were the last. The impact of Zach Hemmila on this football team won’t soon be forgotten and as the Wildcats take the field in their first game, there is no doubt who will be looking over them. #Forever65

National preview: Top-10 contenders The baddest teams in all the land look to be in the top four at season’s end to compete for the national title BY FERNANDO GALVAN @fgalvan35

1

ALABAMA

Bama is the defending national champion and even though they lost last year’s Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry and a slew of defensive players to the NFL draft, no team across the country has the kind of elite depth that the Crimson Tide has. Bo Scarborough is Henry 2.0 and the defense will be in the top 10 nationally.

2

CLEMSON

The Tigers gave Alabama all they could handle in last year’s championship game. They return junior quarterback and current Heisman front runner Deshaun Watson. Watson is the most dynamic quarterback college football has seen since Vince Young or Cam Newton.

3

STANFORD

The Cardinal has the best player in college football returning for his junior season. Christian McCaffery broke the long standing all-purpose yards record last year and looks to keep rolling. Stanford is known for having a physical offensive line and this year will be no different.

4

FLORIDA STATE

The Seminoles have been able to recruit very well during the Jimbo Fisher era and were one game away from being in the playoff last year. With a Heisman contender in Dalvin Cook and playing Clemson on their home field, things shape up nicely for Florida State to make the playoff and compete for another title.

5

LSU

Les Miles found himself on the hot seat last year due to offensive inconsistencies and the inability to get the big win over Alabama. The Tigers’ roster is loaded with players that will be playing on Sundays in in the NFL. The question is: Can their quarterback make enough down-field plays to help Leonard Fournette, one of the country’s best running backs.

6

OKLAHOMA

The Sooners are another team that has elite talent on their roster from top to bottom. The problem has been their inability to live up to expectations and hype. They did make the playoff last year and with quarterback Baker Mayfield returning, Oklahoma is in a great spot to compete for a national title once again.

7

OHIO STATE

All eyes are on Ohio State to see if it can be an example of addition by subtraction. Last year, the Buckeyes had three very capable quarterbacks, but none of them were consistent enough. This year, it will be J.T. Barrett’s team. But with huge losses on the defensive side, it will be difficult to compete at an elite level.

8

TCU

The Horned Frogs have been one of the most consistent programs over the last decade. They were able to secure former five-star recruit Kenny Hill after he transferred from Texas A&M. They have been one or two games from the playoff the last two years and expect them to be in the mix this year, too.

9

MICHIGAN STATE

The Spartans made the College Football Playoff last year and have performed as consistent as any other elite program across the country. In the past three years, Michigan State has played in two Cotton Bowls and a Rose Bowl. They lost quarterback Connor Cook to the NFL, but the Spartans have recruited well and will be competitive.

10

HOUSTON

The Cougars do not belong to a Power Five conference, but have the talent to compete with any team across the country. Head coach Tom Herman has turned the Houston football program into a real contender. If he can overachieve again this year, he will have his pick of head coaching jobs across the nation.

Wildcats welcome additions to d-staff BY SAUL BOOKMAN @Saul_Bookman

The Arizona defense was bad last season, to put it lightly. The Wildcats ranked near or at the bottom of not only the Pac-12 Conference, but the country, in almost every major statistical category. A change needed to be made and it needed to happen in a hurry. In comes defensive coordinator Marcel Yates from Boise State. Defensive coordinator Marcel Yates Yates was at the head of a productive attacking defense that saw the Broncos rank in the top 10 in turnovers forced the past two seasons. The benefit to hiring Yates is that he is familiar with having under-sized personnel, so dealing with that nuance should be easy. He will have his work cut out for him, but it seems that he is pleased with the teams’ progress. “The guys have picked it up slowly but are very energetic and excited about the style we are going to play,” Yates said. He doesn’t like to be pigeon-holed into having to select a particular formation of defense. Instead, Yates says they will play multiple fronts and present different looks to confuse offenses. A key piece to that will be the defensive backs, especially with the spread offenses in the Pac12. Enter cornerbacks coach Donte Williams.

ARIZONA FOOTBALL DEFENSIVE coordinator Marcel Yates focuses in on a play in spring practice at Arizona Stadium on Feb. 12. Yates joined the Wildcats’ program after leaving the same poistion with Boise State, who defeated the UA in the Fiesta Bowl two years ago.

ARIZONA ASSISTANT AND CORNERBACKS coach Donte Williams watches a play in spring practice at Arizona Stadium on Feb. 12. Williams is considered on of the best recruiters on the West Coast.

Cornerbacks coach Donte Williams Williams took a position with the Wildcats after a three-year stint at the same position with San Jose State. You may ask yourself: Why a coach from San Jose State? Well, that would be because he helped the Spartans to the No. 1 overall total defense ranking in the FBS in 2014 and second overall in 2015, according to Arizona Athletics. Together, Yates and Williams are also helping the Wildcats do damage on the recruiting trail, a huge factor in their addition to the program. As of now, the Wildcats hold the second spot in Pac-12 and rank 19th in the country on the recruiting trail. These two coaches are vital to the success of the Wildcats this season. If Arizona can find ways to improve, its record could improve from a year ago.

Offense leads Arizona in positional rankings Quarterbacks BY SAUL BOOKMAN @Saul_Bookman

Another season, another quarterback competition, such is the style of Rich Rodriguez. This year, it is Brandon Dawkins who takes on the role of hot trend, supplanting the departed Jerrard Randle. Dawkins will look to build off of his game against ASU last season and replace Solomon as the teams’ leader. However, questions still remain about Dawkins’ ability to run the offense the way RichRod would like. Solomon, on the other hand, is as solid an option as they come,

Grade: {B} minus the health problems. He has a proven track record and is battle-tested. The biggest knock on him has been health issues, including a concussion that knocked him out of the lineup last year. The Wildcats went three deep at the position last season, so it wouldn’t be beyond the realm of possibility to see true freshman Khalil Tate on the field this year. If the Wildcats stay healthy, they have the quarterbacks needed to have a good year and are in a much better position than they were a season ago.

TYLER BAKER/THE DAILY WILDCAT

Offensive linemen BY JUSTIN SPEARS @JustinESports

Arizona’s offensive line has clear goals: emerge as a top-15 unit in college football and become the engine to Arizona’s highpowered offense. With the tragic loss of potential starting center Zach Hemmila, the men in the trenches are looking to play with more vengeance and a chip on their shoulder. This season’s offensive line will provide more depth and since the injury bug caught more players than expected last season, essentially throwing inexperienced players into the fire, the hell

Grade: {B-} storm from just a year ago will provide more seasoned players. The offensive line will contain a constant rotation of fresh legs, which will be useful come November. The Wildcats return Freddie Tagaloa and Jacob Alsadek, who will both look to be the vocal leaders of the unit. Another play that will have his voice heard is redshirt junior Gerhard de Beer, who couldn’t even put on his pads in his first season with the Wildcats. De Beer has gained significant progress coming from South Africa to Tucson and will most likely start week one.

TYLER BAKER/THE DAILY WILDCAT

Running backs BY NIKKI BAIM @DailyWildcat

Arizona’s running backs this year are going to be small and powerful, but their success will come down to junior Nick Wilson’s health. If he can stay healthy, he could match the dominance of his freshman season when he rushed for 1,375 yards and scored 16 touchdowns. During his sophomore year, Wilson missed four games due to injuries. In the nine games he started, Wilson had 134 rush attempts and rushed for 760 yards. When healthy, he is one of the

Grade: {B-} best running backs in the Pac-12 Conference. Wilson is Arizona’s starting running back, but being injury prone means more snaps for the sophomore Orlando Bradford. As the third option last year, Bradford only had 47 snaps, but showed starting potential. He also stepped up in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl when he gained 61 yards on 11 carries. True freshman J.J. Taylor has impressed the coaching staff in practice thus far. At 5-foot-6 and 170 pounds, Taylor isn’t a physically imposing player, but his quickness makes him hard to tackle. It wont be a surprise to see this guy getting some snaps early this season.

Wide recievers/tight ends BY VARUN IYER @DailyWildcat

The starting receivers are headlined by their experience, with all of the projected starters in their senior years. Trey Griffey headlines the group, making his impact averaging 25.8 yards per reception and totaling 284 receiving yards in just seven games in the 2015 season. The Wildcats are hoping for production from seniors Nate Phillips and Samajie Grant as well, who had a combined 865 yards last season. Behind the starters are junior Cam Denson and sophomore TYLER BAKER/THE DAILY WILDCAT

Shun Brown. The Arizona coaching staff is hoping they can move Brown and Denson around the field to provide even more big-play possibilities. Partnered with them is newcomer Shawn Poindexter. The strength of this Wildcat’s team is their depth at receiver. The tight end position will be a battle throughout the season, with senior Josh Kern and junior Trevor Wood jockeying for playing time. While Kern is listed as the starter, Wood is coming off a season where a shoulder injury kept him sidelined all year. With Wood healthy, the Wildcats believe they have the one-two punch they need from the tight end group.

Defensive linemen BY JUSTIN SPEARS @JustinESports

This unit is without a doubt the biggest concern for Arizona this season, considering the defensive scheme will be completely new and there is lack of depth. Lack of depth means the defensive line is walking on eggshells and can’t afford a single injury this season. Last season, the Wildcats ranked 98th in rushing defense and tied for 67th in total sacks. Arizona averaged just 2.08 sacks and allowed 198.5 rushing yards per game. The Wildcats lost

Grade: {c} leader Reggie Gilbert, who is trying to find a roster spot with the Green Bay Packers. Arizona will also lose three-star JUCO defensive end Josh Allen, who wasn’t academically cleared to play this season. Arizona will hang its hat on Sani Fuimaono, who focused on losing weight in the off-season to play multiple positions on the defensive line. Arizona’s defense poses question marks everywhere, but the defensive line is the biggest mystery of them all.

TYLER BAKER/THE DAILY WILDCAT

Linebackers

Grade: {c+}

BY ROSS OLSON @DailyWildcat

The Wildcats are coming off a rough year on the defensive side of the ball in 2015, but no area hurt more than the linebacker core, which saw multiple key players go down with injuries. It started with emotional leader Scooby Wright III, who missed almost all of last season with knee and foot injuries. To add insult to injury, the team lost Derrick Turituri four games into the season with a hip injury and saw Jake Matthews go down with a left foot injury late in the year.

The new season signifies new hope for the Wildcats’ linebackers as they are working in a completely new defensive scheme under defensive coordinator Marcel Yates. In addition to the new look on defense, the team sees Matthews and Cody Ippolito return to full health. But above all, the team is looking forward to the playmaking abilities of Paul Magloire Jr., who was named to the Chuck Bednarik Award watch list in July for top collegiate defensive players. Magloire, who moved from safety to linebacker last season due to a multitude of injuries, enters his first season as a hybrid linebacker.

TYLER BAKER/THE DAILY WILDCAT

Special teams BY NOAH AUCLAIR @DailyWildcat

The special team’s unit for Arizona will be making a transition to a new kicker as well as a new punter. Seeing that sophomore Josh Pollack is the only kicker on the roster, it gives cause that he will be the starter this fall. Without a punter, the Wildcats may be forced to use Pollack in that area as well, which could see him in kickoffs, punts and spot kicks. There will be plenty of areas that may present problems for the young kicker.

Grade: {c-} Looking at who could be featured as a return man, junior wide out Tyrell Johnson will likely see a lot of action. Special teams will be a key piece of the season. It is normally overlooked by fans until a mistake is made. For this reason and all the uncertainty behind it, this unit would appear to be the weakest on the team.

TYLER BAKER/THE DAILY WILDCAT

Defensive backs BY NOAH AUCLAIR @DailyWildcat

In a season where the defense will be surrounded with question marks, the pressure will be felt by everyone on the Wildcats’ defense, mainly the secondary unit. With most of the front seven up in the air, the defensive backs will have to step up to avoid another below average performance similar to the 2015 campaign. Expect veteran players such as senior safety Tellas Jones to lead a secondary unit that will showcase a notable amount of young and somewhat inexperienced players.

Grade: {c} That’s not to say these new kids on the block, like Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles and Dane Cruikshank, won’t answer the call. They will both look to hit the ground running after having a fantastic spring and are taking huge steps in their college careers. They will likely open the season as starters, which brings a lot of pressure. Looking at the secondary as whole, this year’s unit should be better than last year and that’s as good as Rodriguez could hope for, seeing as the Wildcats allowed 268 passing yards per game last year.

Keep an eye on these Pac-12 players BY SAUL BOOKMAN @Saul_Bookman

Every conference has its elite players that every fan should be aware of, because chances are, you will see them playing on Sunday in the NFL Luke Falk, Washington State

Royce Freeman, Oregon The Ducks junior running back was a force to be reckoned with the moment he set foot on the field as a freshman, and has only gotten better. Freeman ran for 1,365 yards 18 touchdowns as a freshman. Then he rushed for 1,836 yards and 17 touchdowns as a sophomore. If his progression continues, Oregon is looking at a 2,000-yard rusher, a Heisman Trophy candidate, and a possible Pac-12 Conference title.

The junior quarterback from Washington St. has flown under the radar nationally, but that does not take away from what the gunslinger has accomplished. Falk threw for 4,561 yards and 38 touchdowns with a 69 percent completion percentage last season. Although Washington St. is not expected to make any serious noise this year, if the Cougars compete at all, it will be because of Falk and his arm. TYLER BAKER/THE DAILY WILDCAT

MAX FAULKNER/FORT WORTH STARTELEGRAM/TNS

JuJu Smith-Schuster, USC

Christian McCaffrey, Stanford

The junior receiver out of Long Beach, California, exploded on the scene last year with 89 receptions, 1,454 yards and 10 touchdowns. He has the kind of size NFL scouts drool over and if his production in 2016 can match or exceed his 2015 numbers, USC will be right in the mix for a Pac-12 South title. The game to watch will be the first game of the season against No. 1 Alabama. If Smith-Schuster can put up big numbers against that defense, it will be a good year for the Trojans. GINA FERAZZI/LOS ANGELES TIMES/TNS

The junior running back was a Heisman Trophy finalist last year, broke the NCAA all-purpose record previously held by Barry Sanders and put on a show at the Rose Bowl. He is arguably the best all-around football player in the country and looks to back up his record-breaking season by leading the Cardinal to a Pac-12 championship and a College Football Playoff berth. NHAT V. MEYER/BAY AREA NEWS GROUP/TNS

Josh Rosen, UCLA

Myles Gaskin, Washington

The Sophomore quarterback had flashes of brilliance during the 2015 season, including a 56-30 over the Wildcats. He did not finish the season with the kind of consistency many expected, but he led the Bruins to an 8-5 season. With a year of experience behind him and a wealth of talent surrounding him, some are claiming he could be a Heisman Trophy hopeful. As long as he takes the step forward many expect him to, it could be a good year for UCLA.

The sophomore running back put up some very big number his freshman season, running for 1,302 yards and 14 touchdowns. With an experienced quarterback beside him and one of the Pac-12’s best defenses behind him, Gaskin could be looking at a break out year.

JOHN LOK/SEATTLE TIMES/TNS

WALLY SKALIJ/LOS ANGELES TIMES/TNS

Nick Wilson, Arizona Wilson had a stellar freshman year, running for 1,375 yards, 16 touchdowns and helping lead the Wildcats to the Fiesta Bowl. His sophomore campaign was hampered by injuries, but when healthy, you could see the talent and potential from the previous year. Arizona’s success will depend largely on Wilson’s ability to remain healthy. A healthy Wilson is one of the best running backs in the nation and powers Rich Rod’s offense.

The month of October won’t be too kind to the Wildcats with UCLA, Utah, USC and Stanford on the schedule. At least the ‘Cats draw Stanford and USC in Tucson. If Arizona can escape October with a winning record or at least .500, then they’ll do just fine this season.

I see the Wildcats being 6-5 heading into the final game of the season, where I believe they’ll beat ASU. Pac-12 Champion: Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year: Christian McCaffrey, RB, Stanford

The floor is lower than the ceiling is high for the Wildcats this season. If Arizona doesn’t win its three outof-conference matchups to start the season, Rich Rodriguez and company will be in a heap of trouble.

Arizona must start off the season 3-0 or it will suffer its first losing season and miss a bowl for the first time in five years. With a loaded Pac-12 and changes on defense, I just don’t see them making noise.

While Arizona will not be among the conference’s elite, it should be able to beat the teams its are supposed to.
